Four original petitions, namely: 1 ditto by the assistant surgeon of this factory, tending to be advanced in due course to the capacity of chief surgeon. 1 ditto by the provisional assistant Hendrik Kreuger, requesting an increase in wages. 1 ditto by the gunner of this factory, requesting not only to be continued in that post, but also to be increased in wages. 1 ditto by the blacksmith Casper Zee, to obtain an increase in wages. Two copies of findings, namely: One ditto of the cargo of the bearer hereof delivered here, under date of the 17th of September of this year, annexed with two copies of attestations concerning the stranding of the barques, dated the 3rd and 24th of September last past. Five duplicate specifications, namely: 1 piece regarding the entertainment on the occasion of the solemn presentation of His High Excellency, the Right Noble, Rigorous, and Highly Esteemed Lord Jacob Mossel, as Governor-General of the Dutch Indies, dated the 8th of January last. 1 piece concerning the entertainment given to the city governor, Molla Aliesjah, cum suis, under date of the 17th of March of this year. 1 ditto of the repairs made to the Company's horse harnesses, dated the 29th of April last. 1 piece of such repairs as have been made over the period of 12 months to the Company's lodge and horse stable, under date of the last of August recently past. 1 piece of the expenses incurred at this office on merchandise for one year, under date as above. Recently past, I found myself honored by the receipt of Your High Excellencies' valued separate and circular letters dated the 25th of October of the past year, the 6th and 10th of April, and the 21st of July of this year, accompanied by all such enclosures and esteemed orders as the registers thereof have indicated and have appeared to me for my enlightenment, all of which I shall constantly keep before my eyes as a firm rule and guide for obedient compliance; in which manner I also, on the 3rd of the past month of September, with the proper solemnities, held public rejoicings over the joyful succession of His Serene Highness William the Fifth, Prince of Orange and Nassau, etc., etc., etc., to the high and eminent dignities of Hereditary Stadtholder, Captain-General, and Admiral of the Union, and the installation of Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Orange and Nassau, Dowager of His late Serene Princely Highness William Carel Hendrik Friso, of high and laudable memory, as Governess of the Republic and guardian of the minor Prince. However, concerning Your High Excellencies' reflections regarding my request for a direct ship from Europe with woolen manufactures and other goods, and your opinion in that regard, as if I were only concerned with having a direct ship, I give Your High Excellencies an assurance to the contrary; for in respect of my private interests, I would much rather see that none ever appears in this roadstead, as I know not what else it would bring me other than much care and trouble to sell those goods in an exemplary manner and thus not be put to shame regarding my petition, besides and apart from the fact that I myself... While I furthermore request excuse for my obscure writing concerning the missing equipment goods of the late Captain van den Houten, yet the reason that I did not debit the account for the same was that the inventory of Ruijskenstein showed what was missing, but not what the price or the cost thereof was; otherwise it would certainly have been done, just as in the future it will not be neglected if only the price thereof can be found. Finding myself fully innocent of ever having placed my private interest before that of the Honorable Company during the time I have had the honor to serve the Honorable Company, I take the liberty, for the rest, to conduct myself with great respect in this regard in my marginal reply to the following. Extract from a dispatch written by the Noble High and Mighty Lords Directors at the Assembly of the Seventeen in the Homeland to the High Noble Governor General and Council of the Indies at Batavia, dated 29th of September 1752, containing the matter of: Provided: Whether one should attribute the greater profits obtained compared to before to the arrangement made, whereby Your Honors separated the factory of Bassora and Bender â Boucheer from that of Gamron, placing that of Bassoura under Batavia and Bender â Boucheer subordinate to Bassoura, or rather to the greater zeal, industry, and faithful conduct of the present Gamron servants, might appear somewhat questionable. Your Honors seem to attribute it to both, and we are willing to take that same path with Your Honors, although it nevertheless remains certain to us that whatever changes one may make regarding the factories, they will neither answer nor fulfill expectations if faithful and honest, or at least less dishonest, conduct of the servants is not added to it. Whether it proceeds from one or the other, or indeed from both, this at least is certain: that this separation caused a notable diminution in the charges, and the faithful conduct of the servants a notable increase in the profits, which, notwithstanding that the Persian Empire continued to remain entangled in manifold troubles, nevertheless yielded in the book year 1749/50 on a purchase amount of ƒ 98,828:12:0 a sum of ƒ 135,610:8:6, or 137½ per cent, whereby this factory in the said book year, through ƒ 112,151:8:0 in greater profits and ƒ 23,140:4:0 in lesser charges, advanced a sum of ƒ 135,291:12:0 more than in the previous book year; while according to the advices of the servants, great prospects appeared for the sale of the remainders, even at higher prices than those of the previous goods. The favorable reflections that the Noble High and Mighty Lords are pleased to make regarding my person encourage and oblige me in the highest degree to promote the Company's interest always in all fidelity to the utmost of my ability. I would therefore only wish that this melancholy factory would offer me somewhat more opportunity to demonstrate this, for the condition of the Persian Empire and the trade depending on it is so variable that it is impossible to set a steady course by it. However, I give the Noble High and Mighty Lords full assurance that I shall always seize the favorable winds of it and in everything be vigilant and attentive to the interest of my respective Lords and Masters. The calm and peace of the Persian Empire is indeed to be wished for, but not to be expected for many years to come, as the troubles and division of the same are too great for that. Although my successive letters concerning the woolen manufactures as well as the trade are being resumed, we nevertheless wish to set down these reflections of ours, and further, in relation to the cinnamon and pepper, as these are not among the most sought-after trade goods here, to recommend to Your Honour rather to send the same to the Fatherland, as they are among the most desired there, and especially the cinnamon, and likewise not to dispatch any more cloves to this Realm than is absolutely necessary for the [illegible]; yet it occurs to us that the servants, in their letters to Your Honour of the 10th of May 1750, advance that the woolen manufactures from the Fatherland were in great demand, and that the English were entirely sold out of them, so that if the upheavals of the Realm brought no changes in that regard, they did not doubt that a ship with broadcloths, perpetuanas, and other goods would meet with a favorable market here; whereas the servants only about 6 to 7 years ago judged the goods and those which we sent them directly from here with the ship Wildrijk to be sufficiently unsaleable, just like a parcel brought in the year 1742 with the vessel De Cornelia, so that Your Honour authorized them to send those to Nagapatnam in case they could not yield 30 per cent; in the year 1732 or thereabouts, Your Honour ordered 28 pieces of broadcloth, sent from here to Batavia for the Persian Directorate, back to the head office, because the servants advised that not much profit could be made on them; the servants also, in their direct letter dated the 10th of October 1748, made known to us that Gamron was no longer a place where, even in a peaceful time, one could count with any certainty on a turnover of 100, nay even 50 pieces of broadcloth a year, and now a portion of a shipload of them is requested again. If Resident Schoonderwoert, who has satisfied us in his proposals to separate Bassoura from Gamron, etc., as we have cited hereinabove at the beginning, is truly of the opinion that a good parcel of broadcloths, notwithstanding all those previous reports, could be sold with good profits here in prosperous times, we expect, as soon as favorable prospects present themselves, a specific statement of the quantity of broadcloths that could be sold here, their qualities, in particular whether they must be thick, heavy, thin, or light, their colors, and what they could be sold for, in order to then be able to take our resolution thereupon, just as we at present, with respect to Your Honour's authorization to purchase Mocha or Beit al-Faqih coffee, disapprove thereof, unless the servants could purchase the same of the first sort at Gamron for 6 stuivers the pound free of all expenses, and not otherwise, because no more than 10 to 11 stuivers would be obtained for it in the Fatherland, and we in that case only grant it to avoid losses on other returns against 9 stuivers the pound free of all expenses. I have considered this within myself, that contradictions might appear to Your Right Honourable, yet I have always spoken the truth thereof, in conformity with the condition in which the Persian Realm found itself from time to time, for during the entire reign of Nader Shah no one, nay not even a Khan, dared to put on a good garment, whereby consequently no broadcloths of note could be sold, and those which the English still gave out on credit, they barely received the purchase price for, and it was upon that foundation that I wrote that even in a peaceful time not a hundred pieces could be sold; since the massacre of that monarch and now that his treasures are said to have been dispersed, there has immediately been a demand for broadcloths and that popularity has more or less continued until today, though at present it is again no longer as great as it was; had one been able to foresee the death of that Persian monarch and held the broadcloths brought by the Wildrijk for another full year, they would all have been eagerly sold with good profits, and it is therefore on that footing, and in order to cause the English as much detriment as possible, that I have subsequently made a requisition for them again, although the Honourable Company never began in this Realm with the intention of gaining large profits thereon, as that would at best amount to 30 per cent; for if the principal purpose thereof does not consist in favoring the manufactures in the Netherlands thereby and keeping them going all the better, it will be best to abandon it finally once and for all. The broadcloths brought by the Wildrijk were otherwise of very good assortments, and most colors too, but the yellow colors must always be sent only in very small quantities, even if it were in total nothing but a little; and the red, on account of the costliness, also; one must also always pay more heed to the luster and the outward beauty than to the intrinsic goodness of those manufactures, referring myself for the rest concerning this requisition to my recently sent remarks. It happens very seldom that Mocha coffee is sold here below 10 stuivers; therefore it is not apparent that an opportunity will arise to purchase it for 6 stuivers.

Whereon, after deduction of provision and brokerage, a profit was made in the amount of ƒ83271:17:8, on a purchase value of ƒ51025:17:—, or 160¼ percent. The sale, or rather properly speaking what has been delivered from that time until today, consisting of: 1056 lb Cloves 1188 lb Nutmegs 30 lb fine Ceylon Cinnamon 19352 lb Powder sugar 7628 lb Candy sugar 10260 lb Tin bancas 408 lb Lead 1671 lb Iron 470 pieces Blue coffee cups 16 pieces Chintz Botidaar 12 pieces ditto Moeramat 158 pieces Large Longies 137 pieces ditto Small With regard to the spices in general, the merchants initially did not want to take anything except in small quantities, because the calculation thereof, namely: The Cloves at ƒ5:19:— the lb Nutmegs at ƒ3:6:5 1/5 the lb Cinnamon at ƒ2:17:— the lb seemed too expensive to them, saying they could make no profit on it, and could also obtain them cheaper in Boucheer; and because I had also received similar complaints from Kirman from the wool collectors, stating that they could only retail the spices they had taken along in small parcels, I resolved, in order to promote the sale, to reduce them, namely: The Cloves to ƒ5:0:— the lb Nutmegs to ƒ3:—:— the lb Persian money Cinnamon to ƒ2:12:— the lb Persian money. This then also had the success that they purchased somewhat more freely, the Nutmegs being entirely sold out, though not all collected yet; the Cloves will also find a good market, but with the Cinnamon things are still going somewhat hesitantly because of the fastidiousness of the Persians, who constantly want it to have a stronger taste, notwithstanding that what was received is good and considerably better than what has been had here in many years. With the linens things are also proceeding not at all favorably, and whatever trouble is taken to promote their sale, they nevertheless do not sell, as the merchants seek almost nothing other than bulk goods by weight; the chintzes, however, are sold, but likewise not yet collected, except for the ambersias which have green grounds instead of white, which is absolutely not a sort suitable for Persia or Turkey, so that I find myself at a loss with them; but most of the remaining linens I shall send along with the Honorable Kniphauzen to Bender Ricq, as according to many opinions they will certainly be taken off there by the Bassora or Arab merchants. Touching return products, and firstly: The Kirman wool, of which a quantity of 5767 lb has already come in, which goes over per bearer of this, with a calculated valuation of ƒ4:15:— the lb, as the collectors have not yet communicated its net cost to me; however, they are to come down in person one of these days with another good quantity of wool, estimated at about 4 to 5000 lb, with some copperware as well, for which they have bartered the spices, according to their latest reports, which also included some complaints about the difficulties caused them by the English factor there, who had secretly instigated the shawl weavers to go and complain to the government about them, under the pretext that because they bought up all the wool, they were unable to earn their living; but regarding the English, although they also bought up wool, they deliberately remained silent. Ours, being called before the authorities about this, debated that frivolous pretext, and the accusers were duly dismissed; but some time later they renewed their complaints and requested that ours might be prevented from buying that sort of wool which they needed for their fine shawl manufacture. This caused many difficulties, and the wool that ours had in stock was immediately placed under sequestration and sealed by order of the government, but by means of some expenditures to the amount of about ƒ500:—:—, it was released again. The collectors handled that matter as well as their entire business quite well, and that is also the reason that through this and through the broad license that I had given them always to spend two stuivers more per pound than the English, no matter how high it might run, and in case they were in need of money, to draw bills without agio, they completely outstripped that nation in respect of their collection, as they have obtained no more than a good three thousand pounds in total. I shall therefore, after the settlement of accounts, immediately send those same persons thither again, and however the English may agitate, constantly work against them without sparing anything, whereupon your High Nobilities may please be assured. Assa Foetida is also very greedily sought by the English, and dearly paid for, up to 90 stuivers for the first sort the maund, and then still sold, as they say, with good profit in Surat; but to my regret I have no news thereof from the Company's ministers, notwithstanding that I have made a request for an exact price current of all kinds of Persian wares thither. Concerning the sulfur earth... The copperware remains expensive and is seldom valued by the English for anything less, but most of the time for somewhat more than 19 stuivers the lb, which seems somewhat too dear to me, and for that reason I shall not gather those pieces unless I might at times be as it were obliged to do so in order to facilitate trade and not turn away the merchants.

Meanwhile the Basra affairs seem to be turning out for the best, the more so because a firman from the Turkish Emperor has appeared, whereby it is ordered in the most serious manner that Sulayman Pasha must not only restore all the extorted moneys, but also give such an honorable satisfaction as one shall desire oneself, and for all of which, it is said, he has already dispatched orders to Basra.

Bill of Lading, Invoice of the Wines and other Products of this Country which have been shipped in the bearer of this for Batavia. No. 4. Which vessel is today dismissed again from here under convoy of this letter, in the hope that it may arrive further with prosperity at Your Right Honorable High Respects' capital; its Officers having reported to us that on the 14th of the aforementioned month of June in the Channel they had encountered the return ship the Naarstigheijd dismasted; and that the following day the Commander's ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd, along with three other return ships, which were all found to be in good condition, also passed them. Furthermore, we have the honor of sending to Your Right Honorable High Respects with this currently departing ship Leijden the following, shipped here: namely 30 Leaguers of white Drakenstein wine, 6 Lasts of Beans, 2 Pots of candied Oranges, as appears more broadly from the Bill of Lading and Invoice made thereof and attached hereto, which is accompanied by the Copy deed of such Person as was promoted on this Vessel subject to further approval of Your Right Honorable High Respects; alongside which we also take the liberty to forward under Flying Seal a Letter, with the Appendices belonging thereto, directed by the Council of Justice here to the Honorable Respected Council of Justice at Batavia, concerning a certain lawsuit that was heard at this place between the Landdrost of the district of Swellendam, Jan Andries Horak, Ex officio Plaintiff of the one part, and the Burgher Jacobus Botha the Younger, Defendant of the other part, and from which the same Defendant has appealed to the aforementioned Council of Justice at Batavia. Short departure from here of the ship Leyden and arrival, as well as the re-dispatching of the bearer of this, and the appearance in this Cape Roadstead from Mossel Bay of the two Danish ships mentioned here beside. Shortly after the departure from here of the ship Leyden, which took place on the 3rd of this month of November, along with our enclosed humble Letters in Copy of the 31st of October preceding, namely on the 8th of this month, the ship Jerusalem, mentioned in the heading of this letter, arrived at this Government in very good condition, with 3 deceased and 10 sick. Having departed from Goeree on the 7th of July of this year, and having called at St. Jago from the 19th to the 25th of August thereafter for Refreshments, it is dispatched again today from here to Your Right Honourable's capital seat with the following Products of this Country, namely: 30 Pipes of Wine, 8 Half Aams with Pontak, and 6 Lasts of Beans, as is further evidenced by the attached Bill of Lading and Invoice drawn up for this. Referring thereto, and after having dutifully informed Your Right Honourable that the authorities of this ship Jerusalem reported to us that the Bengal Return ship d'Erfprins arrived safely in its destined port in the Fatherland the day before their departure; we further have the honour to note herewith that the Danish Company ships De Prins Christiaan and Rijkwens, mentioned in our dutiful letter of the 17th of July last, carrying the cargo of the ship of that Company named Croonprincesse van Deenemarken which was laid up in Mossel Bay, arrived on the 2nd and 6th of this month from the said Mossel Bay into this Cape Roadstead, intending to proceed directly from here to Copenhagen. We must also dutifully inform Your Right Honourable that, upon receiving report that in the mouth of False Bay and all around the Western corner thereof, some sunken and other reefs were found which were previously not seen during the inspection of that Bay, and consequently could not be marked on the map drafted at that time; the undersigned Governor, considering how important it was for the service of the Honourable Company and the security of the ships arriving there that thorough knowledge of this be obtained, commissioned competent Seamen to conduct a proper and Exact investigation into this. Having completed their duties, they reported in their writing, transmitted in Copy alongside this, that near the Western corner of that Bay, besides the other reefs and Rocks lying there and marked on the map, they had discovered another sunken reef, which they have given the name het Ambeeld, lying according to their taken Bearing due Southeast, at a distance of three-quarters of a Mile from the same Western corner. That because this reef does not always break, but only breaks with a high sea, it will therefore be much more advisable and secure for the ships desiring to enter Simon's Bay, when sailing around the aforementioned Western corner, not to approach and pass the reef lying before it named de Blaasbalg closer than at a distance of one Mile, and then to maintain such a Course as is set down in the aforementioned Report.
