The bearer hereof being also dispatched on this date from here to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses' capital, the remaining homebound ships present here will likewise be dispatched as soon as practicable. Furthermore, as shown by the bills of lading and invoices compiled here and accompanying this letter, the following products of this country have been shipped in these three ships now departing, namely: In Pasgeld 25 leagers of wine 4 aams of red wine in 4 cases marked No. 1 to 4 5 half aams of cauliflower 1 half aam of savoy cabbage 6 lasts of rye In Visvliet 30 leagers with wine 4 aams of red wine in 4 cases marked No. 5 to 8 5 half aams of cauliflower 1 half aam of savoy cabbage In de drie Heuvelen 232 1/17 lasts of wheat 537 lb butter 6 half aams of cauliflower 1 half aam of sugarloaf cabbage 685 lb elephant tusks of diverse sorts, which have been handled according to the orders of the Honorable Company. And as since the dispatch of our aforesaid last humble letter the grain crop then standing in the fields has turned out according to wish, we shall therefore not fail, provided only that space will be found for it in the respective homebound ships present and still expected, to provide Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses with a good quantity of wheat; taking further the liberty to let accompany this letter a copy of the letter which was brought here from the Fatherland with some of the abovementioned outward-bound ships, dated 12 October of last year, accompanied by the copies of our humble letters which were dispatched thither under date of 28 December last and 4 January of this year, both with the English ship Godolphin and the advice-boat Voorland, as also of two sealed notes concerning the secret signal flags that will wave here in the upcoming year 1735 from the Lion's Head and Rump, together with two of the same on the same subject for the island of Ceylon, which we request may be forwarded thither by the goodness of Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses at the first occurring opportunity; in addition to which, alongside this letter, there goes in duplicate a letter addressed under flying seal by the Council of Justice of this place to the Honorable Worshipful Council of Justice of the Castle of Batavia; whilst a certain sealed packet which was consigned by the Ministers at Galle to Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses and brought here with Akerendam is now being forwarded with the ship Pasgeld; having further, among the crew of the last-mentioned vessel as well as among those of the flute de drie Heuvelen, had to make such adjustments here, subject to the further approval of Your Right Honorable High Mightinesses, as the instruments granted thereof and enclosed herewith in copy serve to indicate. And whereas upon the return here from Madagascar of the aforesaid flute de drie Heuvelen, both by its skipper Godlieb Sielo and the remaining purser Dirk Westerhoff, it has been unanimously attested regarding the recent slave trade conducted on the island of Madagascar that, notwithstanding they made their utmost effort to obtain a considerable number of slaves, and to that end also visited more trading places than had previously occurred, they nevertheless were able to obtain on that island of Madagascar no more than 113 bondservants of both sexes (of which 111 individuals were brought here alive), and that such was caused solely by the multitude of French, English, and even Portuguese ships that continuously arrive there to trade for slaves, with the addition that due to the said strong navigation of foreign nations to the aforesaid island of Madagascar, the procuring of slaves there must become increasingly scarce, so that the trade therein will turn out more difficult from time to time; we have therefore, considering that it would consequently only tend to the significant disadvantage of the Honorable Company if the aforesaid flute de drie Heuvelen were kept longer by this Government to go trade thither again, and also that to go fetch such a small quantity of slaves, whether from Madagascar or Rio de la Goa, one could have the same done at much less expense, either with the small vessel Schuylenburg stationed here or one of the other vessels belonging to this Government, resolved in our meeting of 24 December last for the best service of the Honorable Company.

Right Honorable, Highly Esteemed Sirs, Having found ourselves honored by your Right Honorable Lordships' esteemed missives dated 6 April, 1 and 19 October of the preceding year, together with the annexes belonging thereto, we took the liberty to reply thereto that we thought it best and consequently resolved that the said fluyt De Drie Heuvelen would be forwarded as promptly as possible from here to your Right Honorable Lordships' capital with a good cargo of wheat; which now coming to pass, we hope that this action of ours will not appear displeasing to your Right Honorable Lordships. With the forward-mentioned return ships Voorland and Lycochton, we shall not fail to provide your Right Honorable Lordships with as much fresh and sound butter as will be obtainable here against the ordered price of 8 stivers per pound. Concerning this, however, we must say that notwithstanding the inhabitants here were immediately urged to supply butter by the posting of notices (of which a copy is enclosed herewith), it will nonetheless not be before the months of September or October that we shall be able to provide your Right Honorable Lordships with a noteworthy quantity, since the people who make their work of churning butter, living far inland here, do not bring the same up here earlier than in the aforesaid months because of the cool days one has then; which butter, being fresh as if churned in the winter, will consequently be best for shipping. Yet, notwithstanding that, all the fresh butter that can meanwhile be obtained for the aforesaid price of 8 stivers per pound shall be sent to your Right Honorable Lordships provisionally. Pursuant to what has been ordered in this regard, it has been determined by us that all return ships arriving here successively will immediately be visited and searched exactly by the master of equipment of this place, together with the ship's officers present, in the presence of the independent fiscal, to see whether private arrack might have been shipped aboard them, in order that, upon discovery thereof, rigorous proceedings will be taken against the importers as well as the buyers thereof, and the guilty punished appropriately; of which notice has also been given to everyone by the posting of notices (as appears from the copy thereof enclosed herewith). Furthermore, your Right Honorable Lordships will be pleased to see, from the report rendered in that regard and accompanying this in copy, that upon the visitation of the forward-mentioned ships Lycochton, 't Hof d'Uno, 't Huys ten Donk, and Akerendam, no private arrack was found in those bottoms. Lastly, that the Pangerang Wargo Diegoena and Raden Fatje Dienata, who have been here, being sent back with the flute the Drie Heuvelen, to whom has been provided for undertaking the voyage their allotted maintenance money for three months amounting together to Rds: 81:-, we now also have the honour to send over to Your Right Honourable Honours, alongside this in duplicate, the list of the exiles present here, in such manner as you have pleased to require; meanwhile the further orders given in Your Right Honourable Honours' aforementioned esteemed letters, as well as what is laid down in the aforementioned esteemed letters and the respective extracts and other enclosures sent herewith regarding the pay and trade books, together with the successive annotations to be made in the letters departing from here, will likewise be dutifully observed. From Cape of Good Hope, the 16 Feb: 1754 six duits, and for each live sheep four schellings less than at the last contract, which notable difference solely comes from the fact that since the aforesaid time there has been no unusual mortality among the livestock, and that the same also multiplies considerably through the daily expansion of the cattle farms. Furthermore we cannot refrain from bringing to the notice of your Right Honourable Lordships, that after the undersigned Governor was informed on the 8th of this current month of February by a letter from the postholder in the Saldanha Bay, that the Danish Royal ship Nellebladet, which set sail from Tranquebar hither on the 13 8bre past, had arrived in the said bay on the 4th of this month in a very desolate condition, especially with respect to its crew, because besides 64 persons who died during the voyage, the remaining crew members of that vessel, consisting of 107 head, all except the Captain as well as two Lieutenants and 10 or 12 commoners lay dangerously ill, so that the said vessel could not possibly have steered into the Saldanha Bay if the aforesaid postholder with his subordinate crew, as well as the people of the hookers Termeijen and the Hector then staying there, had not come to its aid upon the distress signals made on that account; and subsequently the Governor having been brought further notice by one of the above-mentioned Lieutenants sent by said Captain for assistance, who arrived here with the express messenger from the frequently mentioned postholder, that the mainmast of their ship was completely disabled and the foremast had also been damaged to such an extent that in all probability it would be impossible to repair it again, and also that they suffered a great shortage of sails, with an urgent request on this account on behalf of its Captain that we would please come to their aid in this their dire condition, and that in the first place, in order to bring the ship to this Cape roadstead, a mate, sailmaker, and 60 sailors might be sent to them; whereupon we, taking into consideration that the hookers Termeijen and the Hector found themselves at that time still in the Saldanha Bay as was cited before, and that they sometimes might still be detained there for a long time by contrary winds, so that the small vessel Schuylenburg must necessarily be kept at hand here, in order to be able to be employed in service of the Honourable Company's ships in the event of one or another unexpected incident, and that furthermore the requested number of 60 sailors could not well be spared in view of the urgent work both around the bearers of this letter and the respective return ships, thought it best in our meeting of the 9th of this month, and consequently resolved, that to the frequently mentioned ship Nellebladet there should first be sent from here by the overland route 20 sailors together with a mate and sailmaker, to provisionally right the ship again and put it in a condition to be able to come up to this place, and subsequently all necessaries will be provided to that vessel according as it shall be found necessary upon further received report from its Captain. From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 26th Feb: 1753 From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 26th Feb: 1734 Which higher amount of charges has arisen, firstly, from the ship expenses, which ran ƒ 5505: 18:8 higher because during the last elapsed year more ships were present here than previously; and secondly, from the paid garrison wages, which item alone ran to ƒ 159490: 2:—, and thus in itself ƒ 20634: 12:— more than in the past year. The cause of this is that under the same main entry there had to be brought again the amount of the uniforms of the Militia of this Castle and the Corps of Artillery servants to the sum of ƒ 29811:3:8. But whereas that amount cannot be considered an actual expense item, since the same is repaid to the Honourable Company upon the debiting of the garrison, as was cited at large in our humble letter of the 25th of March 1752, the amount of the charges in general would in reality be only ƒ 458349:7:8, and thus ƒ 6626:18:— less than those [illegible] arisen because of the lesser sale of trade goods, because the same having been brought here in smaller quantity than the year before, the advances thereon consequently could not yield as much as previously. Raauwenhof in our meeting of the 16th of this month having been read with attention in the just past month of March, and having appeared to us at first glance as seditious and of evil consequence, we, in order to know rightly what this matter was, summoned the aforementioned appointed skipper Raauwenhof to appear in our said meeting, and asked him in earnest terms how and in what manner this matter had actually been started and carried out by the crew, to which it was answered by him that when they had arrived with their cited vessel under his command on the 29th of December last near Prince's Island, and the ship's crew noticed from the preparations being made here that there was an intention to come to anchor there, they had then unanimously, yet in a polite manner, requested that, since many of them were already lying sick, the ship was troubled with leakage, and their provisions were also very sparingly conditioned, the voyage might therefore be continued towards the Cape, the more so because the wind was blowing very favorably for that purpose. That the said Capt. van Zon having held up to them the orders of Your Right Honorable Worships, to wit, to remain lying under Prince's Island until the 25th of January aforesaid, the crew had renewed their request made to sail on and had persisted therein, upon which he, Capt. van Son, in order to be able to cover himself in this regard, had demanded a writing from them concerning this matter, and that following this the aforementioned paper was then promptly handed over by them, after which, still on that same day, it was decided in the ship's council to continue the voyage hither; and as it appeared from this that Reasons why it was thought best to let the ship Overnes depart together with its companions without examining this matter more closely and extensively. Regarding the aforementioned writing, together with the resolution of the ship's council taken thereupon, sent over herewith in copy. Shipped on the bearer of this from the products of this country. that this matter was not of such a nature as it had appeared at first, and that the crew was considerably less guilty thereof than was thought; and that it was also testified by the repeatedly mentioned skipper Raauwenhof, upon our explicit question asked in this regard, that the ship's crew, both before and after that time, had always and in all cases conducted themselves completely peacefully and obediently, and that he therefore had not the slightest apprehension or difficulty about continuing the voyage with them further to the Fatherland; having well considered all this, we thought it best for the service of the Honorable Company to let the matter rest there and to let that ship Overnes depart from here together with Middelburg and Sparenrijk, the more so because the shortness of time could in no possibility allow a closer and more extensive investigation to be conducted here in this regard; taking furthermore the liberty to transmit to Your Right Honorable Worships alongside this the mentioned paper in copy, together with the resolution taken thereupon by the ship's council of that ship Overnes, trusting that, taking into consideration the circumstances of this matter, you will be pleased to be satisfied with our proceedings held in this regard. Whereupon the frequently mentioned Captain Surville, having come again to the Secunde the following day, or Sunday the 24th of March last, then presented his pass or sea letter, and thereupon further requested to be allowed to obtain provisions and refreshments for his crew; but as this was refused him by the Secunde (considering that the Captain continued to refuse to fire a salute unless he were answered with an equal number of shots), the mentioned Captain did not hesitate to declare to the Secunde in a brusque manner that since he was in necessary need of provisions and could not feed his crew firewood, he would then remain lying here with his ship, adding that within a few days eight ships of his nation of greater importance than his were due to arrive at this place who would easily mediate that dispute concerning the salute, or as he expressed himself in French, L'apaiseront bien; upon which, being asked by the Secunde in serious terms what he meant by this latter statement, he answered, at the same time adopting a softer tone, that the same should not be taken as a kind of threat, From Cabo de Goede Hoop, the 10 April 1754 since he had only wished to indicate thereby that their Commander happened to be among the aforementioned eight ships, and that in case the same saw fit to order him to salute contrary to his orders, he would then immediately do so, and that the dispute over this would consequently then be settled; all of which the Secunde, after the said Captain Surville had parted from him, caused to be brought once more to the knowledge of the undersigned Governor through the First Sworn Clerk of the Political Secretariat, Christiaan Ludolph Neethling, who thereupon deemed it necessary to bring this matter in all its circumstances before our meeting of the 26th of the frequently mentioned month of March, and to ask the members their advice concerning this, namely what they might think could further or otherwise be done in this matter.
