From Cape of Good Hope, the 10th of April 1754 From Cape of Good Hope, the 18 April 1754 Account of that which occurred regarding the aforementioned subject subsequently also with the ship Le Dauphin, Monsieur de St Medear. Having taken action regarding the cited ship La Renommée, there subsequently arrived at this roadstead on the 27th of the often-mentioned month of March, as noted before, the ship Le Dauphin, whose captain, named Monsieur de St Medear, accompanied by his supercargo as well as by the frequently mentioned Captain Surville, came to the undersigned Governor the following day (without the Castle having in the meantime been saluted by his ship under his command). After showing his pass or sea letter, he made a request to be accommodated here with water and firewood, and furthermore, after that had been granted to him, to also be allowed to purchase provisions for his crew. But to this last-mentioned request, the Governor answered him that since the Castle had not been saluted by him upon his arrival according to custom, one could therefore according to orders permit him nothing other than the enjoyment of water and firewood without anything else. Whereupon the said Captain de St Medear replied once more that he had not done this because, like the above-mentioned Captain Surville, he had orders not to salute unless he was promised that the said salute would be answered with an equal number of shots, and that he was prepared to do the same on that condition. But after the Governor had answered him that such could by no means happen, as this conflicted with the customary practice both here and at the other places of the Honorable Company in India, and also with the orders held here regarding this matter, Captain de St Medear promised, after a few more exchanges of words, to immediately send orders to the ship under his command to properly salute the Castle. For which reason the Governor then promised the captain that as soon as this had happened, he would then also be permitted to purchase the necessary provisions and refreshments at his discretion, and that he would furthermore be treated in every respect with the same friendliness as had been and always was shown at this place to all French and other foreign nations' ships previously here. Adding furthermore that he, the Governor, was very astonished by the aforementioned order given to him, the captain, regarding the salute, and at the same time could not think otherwise than that it must be entirely new, considering that the French ships that had been here as recently as the previous year 1753 had been completely satisfied with the return salute of two shots fewer and had made not the least difficulties regarding that. To which the often-mentioned Captain de St Medear replied that the same order was indeed new and had only been given this year to him and the other commanders of the French ships fitted out for India, but that in order to enjoy provisions and refreshments he preferred to overlook it, reserving the right to give notice of this to his gentlemen principals. Which was again answered by the Governor by saying that this was well, and that he would likewise make this known to his lords and masters, so that this matter could thus be decided by the gentlemen principals of both sides themselves. After all this had now been settled in the aforementioned manner with the mentioned Captain de St Medear, the other, namely Monsieur de Surville, subsequently also asked the Governor whether, since the Castle was now about to be saluted by the ship of the aforementioned Captain de St Medear as his commander, he might on that account not be excused from it. And the Governor having answered him that the same could well have been excused in case they had arrived here at the roadstead together, but since this had not happened, it was reasonable, both for this reason and principally because of what had passed regarding the salute with him, Captain Surville, that he, the captain, should also give the salute. The same replied that if his aforementioned commander de St Medear were to order him to do so, he would comply without delay. Whereupon the said Captain de St Medear ordered Captain Surville to do so in the presence of the undersigned Governor, and they having further taken their leave with the utmost civilities, the Castle was shortly thereafter saluted by those two ships, each with nine shots, and they were answered according to custom, the one after the other, with seven shots, after which the Governor

Then the mentioned first had the fire watch posted at the aforesaid ship La Renommé removed from the same and revoked the further orders issued to prevent the shipping of provisions etc., and on the contrary ordered, where it was required, to allow both that ship La Renommé and that of the often mentioned Captain de St. Medear to be supplied with one thing and another and to treat them in every respect as is customary here regarding the ships of foreign nations; which having then taken place in such manner, those two ships nevertheless set sail from this roadstead on the 4th of this month without saluting. From Cape of Good Hope, the 19th of April 1754 Whereunto are also attached in copy the acts of such persons as the bringers of this letter, whose ranks have been provisionally advanced for the further approval of Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Lords. And whereas we, notwithstanding the discharge made thereof from some Homeland ships, have not been able to supply the ship Meervliet, for reasons mentioned in our humble letter of the 10th of this month, with more than five barrels of Homeland meat and six ditto bacon; therefore, for this reason, another one thousand pounds of Cape salted meat have been provided to the same, and the authorities of that vessel have been ordered to consume the same first; whereupon we now take the liberty most respectfully to request Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Lords that you will please have the goodness to send us in due time a report on how this meat shall have been found, to the end that, in the future, in similar or other contingencies, we may regulate ourselves accordingly; while meanwhile, with the approval of Your Right Honourable and Worshipful Lords, we have acceded to the request made here by Hermanus Wijphens, who had been designated minister on the ship Meervliet, because, on account of the fatigue suffered during the very long voyage hither, he finds himself not well able to proceed with the said vessel to Batavia, that he may remain for a short time at this place until a further shipping opportunity. Furthermore, on this date, the return ships Osdorp, Brouwer, and Vrijburg are also dispatched from here to the Netherlands, which shortly may be followed by the ship 't Slot van Cappelle, then remaining as the only one on this roadstead; while we shall also dutifully note here, as having arrived, that the ship de Jaager the day before yesterday, as well as Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, alongside the return ships Vreedesteyn and Rosenburg, yesterday at nightfall, under favour of a breeze from the South, set sail from this roadstead and continued their voyage to the places of their destination. From Cape of Good Hope, 7 June 1754 From Cape of Good Hope, 7 June 1754 Of which ships the two mentioned outward-bound ones, along with the return ship Bosch en Hoven, were found to be in good condition; but all the others, some more and some less, appeared here with defects and damages. Because Zeekerland was not only afflicted with leaks between the decks, but moreover was so generally seam-rent that there was very much to do in stopping up and caulking the one and the other; and the Gustaaf Willem, together with Diemen and d' Immagonda, having been overtaken around the latitude of this promontory by a severe storm from the northwest that lasted from 27 April to 4 May last, the first of the three vessels just mentioned became very disabled thereby, as upon inspection the entire upper ship was found to be almost completely strained and worked loose. And although the officers of Diemen were also compelled during the aforesaid storm to throw 14 pieces of cannon overboard into the sea to lighten the ship, things turned out considerably better for that vessel, and also for d' Immagonda; because except for some minor damage that the said ship Diemen sustained to its cargo due to the heavy seas shipped over, and the breaking of the main and fore yards of d' Immagonda along with some damage to its beakhead, no further defects of importance were observed on either of those two hulls, as Your Right Honorable Great Esteemed can learn from the reports granted in that regard and accompanying this in copy.

From Cape of Good Hope, the 7 June 1759 the Gustaaf Willem and d'Immagonda will, without the slightest delay, be dispatched from here to the Fatherland, in hope that their consort, the Geregtigheid, notwithstanding that we, on account of its staying behind, are greatly concerned whether that vessel may not have met with some misfortune in the aforesaid storm, may yet arrive safely at this corner of the earth. While the outbound ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd is to be dispatched within a few days, it will on the other hand take a considerable time before the often-mentioned provision ship Diemen can be sent back from here to Your Right Honourable Lordship's headquarters, seeing that this vessel, as previously cited, was forced to put into False Bay, on which account, by the undersigned Governor in our meeting of the 28th of the past month of May, it was taken into serious consideration what ought now to be done concerning that ship Diemen in this stormy and rainy season to the best service of the Honourable Company; namely, whether one should cause it to come up hither from the aforesaid False Bay—since there is no opportunity there to discharge the cargo of that vessel and even less to store it—in order subsequently to be unloaded, or rather to leave it lying there until after the end of the winter, and this not only to avoid the danger to which this vessel during its stay for unloading at this roadstead would have to remain exposed by the heavy storms that usually blow here at this time of year, but also because that ship can hardly put out to sea from the often-mentioned False Bay except with a west-north-west wind, and it might easily happen, as experience with respect to other ships departed from there that had to weather this corner of the earth has taught, that as soon as this ship had come out to sea, by weathering the aforesaid wind, it would be driven back as far as, and even below, the reef of Agulhas; where that vessel, besides the time it would have to waste before it could, by reason of the northerly winds blowing daily about this coast, bring itself back far enough again to head for this Table Bay, would still have to endure much and sometimes run into peril of suffering even more and greater damage to hull and cargo, if matters should not perhaps turn out even worse. Having deliberated upon this attentively, and taking into consideration that even though this vessel should overcome all these dangers and have arrived safely at this Cape roadstead, it would then, by the rough and rainy weather that, as has already been mentioned, is daily to be expected in this winter season, still take a very long time before the goods loaded therein were unloaded and that ship Diemen could again be loaded with rope and other products of this country; one has therefore, for all these reasons, had to resolve that the frequently-mentioned ship Diemen, after the example one had of this in the year 1750 in respect of the provision ship Polanen, shall be left in False Bay until after the end of the winter, in order to come up to this Cape roadstead thereafter for discharging; which we hope will receive Your Right Honourable Lordship's approval. To return to the main place with the following products of this country shipped therein, namely: 304 2/57 Lasts of Wheat 20 lb dried Figs 37 lb Canary seed as will all further appear by the Bill of Lading and Invoice made of this and attached hereto. And seeing that the skipper of this vessel, Jan Roelofsz, has passed away on the outward voyage, we have therefore appointed as skipper in his place the chief mate Matthias de Wit of Femeren, and likewise allowed the second mate Jacobus Barendsz of Ootmarsen to step up to chief mate, though subject to the further approval of Your Right Honourable Worships; in which manner further promotions among the crew of that keel have had to be made, as the appointments granted thereof and accompanying this in copy will show; having furthermore duly received Your Right Honourable Worships' esteemed letter of 31 December of the past year, on which account we shall now take the liberty to reply thereto. That the cultivation of Indigo and Cotton will for now only be attempted in the Company's gardens here at the Cape, Rondebosch, and Nieuwland, although such with respect to Indigo was reportedly undertaken in vain in the years 1727 and 1728, and that one cannot have very favourable expectations of Cotton either, on account of the coldness of this climate and the heavy winds that one has in this country; which, however, time and experience will have to teach. But concerning the purchase on the Company's behalf of all the products of this country for a third less than the prices set thereon, that such is utterly impossible, because for lack of warehouses and magazines (with the erection of which, however, nothing is neglected insofar as time and opportunity will permit), even after the leaseholders and these inhabitants have provided themselves with the wines and grains needed for their consumption and trade, the Company would still not be able to receive and store half of all that would be left over of those goods and must sometimes be retained by these inhabitants after the usual delivery; which for the most part happens not because of the great excess thereof, but indeed for lack of cargo space to be able to ship and dispatch them from here; and further also because such a considerable reduction of the prices on a portion of the products of this country would be extremely disadvantageous for these inhabitants and severely oppress them in the cultivation of the lands, the more so because by His High Nobility the Governor-General Gustaaf Willem Baron van Imhoff, during his presence at this place, the price of the products that could bear it was already reduced, namely Peas from seven to five and Beans from 6 to four Rixdollars the muid, and on the other hand the cask-money was increased from one to three Rixdollars on each leaguer of Wine; and that Your Right Honourable Worships, upon the strong representation of these colonists and of the great inconveniences that would result therefrom, were also pleased in your subsequent letter dated 31 December 1744 to abolish the reduction that you had made in your esteemed missive of 15 October 1743 on Corn from 8 to 7 guilders the muid, and to restore that grain again to the old price of 8 guilders. That the imposition of a tax of one heavy stuijver on each pound of meat that would be transported from shore to ship by the arriving ships of foreign nations here could likewise not take place, because this would not only be very detrimental to the sale that the Company's butchers make thereof to those ships, generally at 2 stve:s the pound, but at the same time would overturn the privilege granted to them upon contracting the supply thereof to the Honorable Company; moreover, it would above all have the effect that the same butchers would or could no longer in the future give the meat to the Honorable Company as cheaply as they do now, namely at five duyten the pound. Furthermore, it is also certain that the other taxes concerning those ships, namely of Two Dutch Guilders on each mudde of grain and twenty-four such guilders on the leaguer of wine that they would take with them from here, would yield little or nothing, because of the economizing they began long ago in that regard, and which would have to become ever greater on this account, if they should not occasionally decide, in order to avoid the great expense of all provisions, to pass by this port, and on the other hand would inflict irreparable harm upon these inhabitants, who must nevertheless mostly subsist on the shipping trade; while on this subject one cannot leave unmentioned that now and then it has also happened that the officers of the ships of foreign nations landing here, and especially the English, having complained that they must pay twice as much for a pound of meat as these inhabitants, these new taxes would not only double their complaints and cause much outcry, but also give them reason to think that one was seeking to deter them from this place. And concerning now the imposition of a tax of 20 pCo on the linen that might be brought here by the aforementioned foreign ships of foreign nations, the Honorable Company, instead of deriving advantage thereby, would come to suffer much damage; for besides the fact that the yield of this tax could not amount to much, since this Government is not a place of trade where one consequently needs no more than what is required for daily use, and even then mostly coarse linens, the Honorable Company on the other hand, through such private importation which would also take the money of these inhabitants out of the country, would lose incomparably more on the trade which it itself conducts here in linen than such a tax could ever yield, so that this would finally also have to bring to an end and ruin the auctions which are held on behalf of the Company in this place three or four times a year for that and also for other goods, which auctions according to the condition of this country have for some years now yielded considerable profits. Wherefore we, respectfully interpreting the intentions of Your Right Honorable Worships, have had to take the liberty of presenting all this most respectfully to Their Right Honorable High Worships the Lords Masters in the Fatherland, and consequently will now await their respected orders and pleasure in this regard. Furthermore, in compliance with the further instructions given by Your Right Honorable Worships' aforementioned respected letter concerning the described coin species, the sesthalven shall continue to circulate here as of old for six stvr the piece, and the new scheepjes and hoedjes schellingen, together with the new double stuyvers, as soon as they shall have been sent hither in sufficient quantity by the highest-mentioned Lords and Masters in the Patria, shall be set, the former at seven and the latter at two and one quarter heavy stuyvers, and the bullion shall then be dealt with according to orders. But the skipper Godlob Silo having already departed from here for Batavia in February last, the instructions in his regard could consequently not be carried out; meanwhile, all the other orders, both in Your Right Honorable Worships' often-mentioned respected missive and in the enclosures sent along with it, shall be dutifully obeyed. How this vessel was discharged well here, except for the following that was brought up short or broken, namely: 42 pieces of Porcelain Table Plates which, out of 500 pieces, upon opening 4 crates marked No. 15, 28, 30 and 54, were found broken, being 8 2/5 percent net 4 pieces of ditto large fluted Bowls, upon opening a crate No. 15 out of 20 pairs, were also found broken, being 20 percent net 33 ditto small Bowls which, out of 100 pieces, upon opening a crate No. 28, were also found broken, being 33 percent net 18 ditto medium Dishes, upon opening two crates No. 30 and 54 out of 100 pieces, had been broken, being 18 percent net 720 Cans of Arrack out of 7200 Cans in 20 Leaguers, upon gauging, found to be less, having been 7 of 4 inches, 10 of 5 inches and 3 of 6 inches ullage, making 10 percent net 86 pieces of Teak or Chinese planks out of 1000 pieces brought up broken. Which deficient Arrack, as not exceeding, as well as the broken planks, since the same will nevertheless either be used in the service of the Honorable Company or can be sold without loss, alongside the broken porcelain, subject to the esteemed favorable interpretation of Your Right Honorable, were passed and written off in the trade books of this Government, as will further appear from our Resolution taken under the 4th of this month, annexed hereto in copy, which is accompanied by the copy of the Report that, in conformity with the esteemed orders of Your Right Honorable, was rendered by the skipper of this vessel regarding the daily proceedings concerning the unloading and reloading of that keel and the impediments that were encountered concerning the one and the other; alongside which we also have the honor to send you the copies of the letters and annexes which were recently dispatched from here to the Illustrious College of the Gentlemen Seventeen under the 19, 25, 27 and 29 April, as well as 13, 14 and 19 May past. As written under No. 1 to the Honorable Highly Esteemed Lords Directors commissioned to the Illustrious Assembly of the Seventeen per the return ships Ordorp, Vrijburg, 'T slot van Cappelle, Leckerland, and Bosschenhoven, under date 19, 25, 27, and 29 April, and 13, 14, and 19 May last. No. 4. Copy of further demand of necessities now recently made for the benefit of this Government for the upcoming Year 1755 from the Fatherland. No. 5. This vessel had to be provided here with a new main yard, and for that reason was obliged to remain in its aforesaid anchorage somewhat longer than would otherwise have occurred; seeing that the said yard was manufactured at this place and subsequently brought with great difficulty by wagon to Kalk Bay, where it had to remain lying for several days before, for lack of the necessary suitable weather, it could be transported by water to Simons Bay. Concerning now the condition of the ship De Geregtigheid upon its appearance at this place, we shall have the honor to say that, notwithstanding the hardships suffered, that keel was still found to be in a reasonable state, as the defects present mostly consisted of the ship having labored so heavily above water that it had to be caulked everywhere, both inside and outside; that its galley had also become battered, and that the same, both for this reason and because a fire had broken out therein the day before the arrival of the said vessel in the aforementioned Baay Fals (which was, however, fortunately extinguished immediately), had to be broken down and built up again. All of this was also carried out with all proper speed and everything else was repaired; furthermore, the said vessel was not only supplied with others in place of its lost anchors and cables, as well as the artillery thrown overboard, but its gunpowder that had become wet was also properly replaced. Thus, by this and by providing the same with all required provisions and whatever else was lacking, that keel was brought once again into a complete state for departure, and was thereupon mustered on the 3rd of this current month of August. Also, on the 20th and 22nd of July last, the bearers of this letter, the ships Radermacher and De Naarstigheid, arrived in the frequently mentioned Baaij Fals; the first with only 2 dead and 14 sick, and the other with no more than 3 deceased and 6 disabled, while both, with regard to the keels themselves, were also in desirable condition. For this reason, the same are dispatched from here again on this date, in the hope that they may also arrive safely at Your Honorable Excellencies' capital; having, on account of the difficulty in which we found ourselves here in this regard, been obliged to lighten the following from these two ships, both for the benefit of this Government and for the frequently mentioned return ship De Geregtigheid, to wit: From Radermacher 2½ hoed of smithing coal from the Company's cargo 1 heavy cable of 18 inches from the equipment and ship's use ½ barrel of pitch 30 whole water leaguers From De Naarstigheid 3 barrels of meat, from the provisions 1 heavy cable from the equipment and ship's use 1 barrel of pitch 25 whole leaguers Appearing more fully from the receipts granted for this and enclosed herewith, which are accompanied by copies of the acts of such persons as had to be advanced here on the bearer of this, subject to the further approval of Your Honorable Excellencies; as well as the copy of our humble letters with the appendices belonging thereto, which we took the liberty to consign on the 3rd of this month with the frequently mentioned ship De Geregtigheid to the Illustrious College of the Right Honorable Gentlemen Seventeen. From the Cape of Good Hope, the 20th of September 1754. We now again dutifully inform Your Right Honourable Worships that the return ship De Geregtigheid, having on the aforementioned 13th of August last likewise continued its voyage to the Netherlands, conversely, on the 4th of this current month of September, with 14 dead, 26 sick, but otherwise in good condition, there arrived at this roadstead the ship Slooten mentioned in the heading of this document, which put to sea from Texel on the 20th of May of this year in the company of the ships Kivitshéuvel, Elswout, and d'Eendragt, and is today dispatched again from here under cover of this letter, in the hope that its three aforementioned companions, from which it was separated on the 16th of June last near the Canary Islands, may also soon arrive here in good condition; while with regard to the provisioning ship Diemen we shall also note that this vessel, having returned on the 31st of the aforementioned month of August from the Bay and arrived here at the roadstead, is at present not only completely unloaded, but that a beginning has already been made with the loading of wheat into it; so that that hull can also be sent back within a few days with a good cargo of the said grain and other products of this country to Your Right Honourable Worships' capital. Furthermore, there has been shipped to Batavia from this place on this now departing ship Slooten the following goods, namely: 20 leagers of wine 8 lasts of beans 271 lb butter 3 half-aams with cauliflower 6 half-aams with savoy cabbage 7 half-aams with red cabbage 6 half-aams with sour cabbage 3 tubs with fruit saplings Appearing more fully from the bill of lading and invoice drawn up hereof and accompanying this, but since we have already for some time had no heavy ropes at all in stock from the Homeland, and were thereby compelled, during the presence here of the ships Leckerland and 't Huys te Manpad for the benefit of those two hulls, to remove from the ship Oudcarspel, which had arrived bound for Ceylon, all three heavy ropes that were laden therein for that island, in order to be able to save the aforementioned ships Leckerland and 't Huijs te Manpad with them from the great danger in which they then found themselves, we have therefore, in order to keep the Ceylon Government free of embarrassment in this matter, with Your Right Honourable Worships' respected indulgence, had to decide to remove one heavy rope from this ship Slooten, as well as two more heavy ropes from one or two of the other expected Homeland ships, and to send them thither with one of the ships departing for Ceylon as a replacement for those that, as has been said, had to be taken from the Ceylon supply; in addition to which there also had to be removed from the bearer of this, since there was likewise a great shortage of it, a barrel of pitch from the ship's store; As will further appear from the receipt granted for this and attached hereto, alongside which we have the honour to send to Your Right Honourable Worships the copy of the letter written hither by our Lords and Masters in the Fatherland under the date of 28 March of this year, as well as a copy of the deed of such person as had to be corrected by the bearer of this for the further approval of Your Right Honourable Worships, item also the copy of a certain sentence pronounced by the Court of Justice of this place on the 27th of June last, whereby the persons now being sent over with the bearer of this, Jacob Jansz Heemaat of Amsterdam, Hermanus Pietersen of Gothenburg, and Zacharias Seymer of Stange, have all three been condemned to work for the term of one year without pay in the Company's ropewalk on the island of Edam. Furthermore, on the 17th of August last there also appeared at this roadstead, and on the 3rd of this month sailed on to Bombay, the English ship Shaftesbury, being under the command of Capt. From Java's East Coast, 25 February 1754. Of which 't Huijs ten Duijnen, and not the 50 soldiers, as in the text of Knapenhoff's return, the Spreuw and the Vriend, the chaloups Overschie; from Qualladamak, Saamslag; from Paccalongang, Ouwerkerk; and from Tagal, for the second time, Knapenhoff, Dieshoek, Cattendijke, Haarlem, and Amstelveen; we take the liberty to inform Your Noble Excellencies that of these ships present on the Coast, there are still loading at the first-mentioned office of Sourabaija the ships Baarsande, Straelen, and 't Huys ten Duijne. Regarding the latter, the officials there have notified us that, having been designated for Banda instead of the ship Nieuwstad destined thither, the rice for Banda, 250 lasts of rice planned for that vessel, must be taken in, without it appearing to us from the much-respected copy of Your Noble Excellencies' letter sent to them whether the 50 soldiers were also to be transported thither to that government, which Your Noble Excellencies were pleased to pre-advise the first signatory in a separate missive of 13 December last would be picked up in passing from this main office by the said Nieuwstad, so that we might otherwise have had them sent thither for such purpose. Likewise at Rembang, the Dieshoek and Woitkersdorp; and at Joana, the aforesaid ship Knapenhoff, which having left that roadstead on 27 November and, being at the latitude of Poulo Mandalika, its bowsprit having cracked, had to cut anchor due to strong rushing winds and return thither. From there, on 8 December following, after its bowsprit had first been reinforced with what was necessary, it undertook the journey towards Batavia for the second time, but in vain; seeing that at about the same place, due to the raging seas, the three heavy stays of that vessel snapped, the foretopsail yard broke, and the leakage increased further, whereby the officers were forced to seek the same port again to remain there until after the turn of the west monsoon, before which they have declared themselves unable to resume the voyage on account of the bad condition of their vessel. Wherefore we pray that Your Noble Excellencies may as little impute to us this long delay as the non-appearance at Batavia of the chaloups projected for Maccasser and Amboina, which instead of going directly thither were to be sent on to the Indies capital according to the highly esteemed order of Your Noble Excellencies of 5 June of the past year. Inasmuch as both, due to the vehement current and adverse winds, had to seek out the Rembang roadstead again: the one from below the Red Point of Japara with the loss of a rope and wooden anchor on 17 December, and the other with the loss of its iron anchor near the point of Oelosarie on 3 January past.
