From Gamron, the 20th of December, Anno 1754 Arabian soldiers, I have indeed done my best and have already spoken with a troop of about 100 Arabs about it, but until now have not been able to come to an agreement, because those people did not wish to separate from their families for such a long time. If Your Right Excellencies would now be pleased to permit them to take their wives and children with them, there might perhaps still be a chance to persuade them, but I have not dared to take it upon myself to offer that to them, for the reason that I heartily doubt whether Your Right Excellencies would be well served by that large train of followers, which usually consists of many persons and would also hamper them aboard the ships. I shall nevertheless do my duty to engage as many single persons as opportunity shall provide me with, but whether Your Right Excellencies will indeed have the required service from those nations, I strongly doubt, and I fear with good reason, that they will quickly contaminate the Easterners with their thievish tricks and thus ruin them completely. The order of Your Right Excellencies regarding the cancellation of private shipping around the West of India, I have made known where it was necessary, and have also made public by reading aloud the military articles of war alongside the regulation on the muster of the naval and military officers. Concerning the cargo accounts in the trade books and the examination thereof with those of the wages, I shall govern myself with all promptness according to the instructions. To be better able to prevent the taking in or shipping off of private goods in the ships underway, pursuant to Your Right Excellencies' renewed interdiction, I request that the ship commanders may henceforth be instructed by directive not to touch at Muscat during their voyage hither, other than in cases of utmost necessity. However, regarding Your Right Excellencies' order to deliver the red earth purified henceforth, I do not know whether it is their desire to have it washed, or merely cleared of stones. For the first, I find myself incapable due to lack of manpower, cooperage, and other materials, besides the fact that it would incur too many expenses and the annual quantity would be only small; but to clear the same of stones there would still be a chance, if one were to obtain enough sieves for it, at which time one could order the ship commanders to send a mate with men to Ormus to sift the same with the help of the natives to be found there, as well as to remain there during the shipping off and keep supervision over it, regarding which I request Your Right Excellencies' further elucidation. However, Your Right Excellencies, upon the favorable and unfavorable items carried forward in the trade books, have among other things been pleased to dispose that the still outstanding debts of the Company's broker, Commertjent, Abjent, and Fatkordah amounting to 182083.24, must continue to remain as such, whereas Your Right Excellencies had nevertheless by letter of the 2nd of July 1753 granted authorization for the writing off of the old Spahan bill of exchange debt amounting to f 74864. 14. —, which consequently was also done in the books of 1753/4 now being sent over, whereby that debt is diminished to f 97932. 10. —, regarding which I had the honor to inform Your Right Excellencies already by my dispatched letter with That thereof, by the former resident Pieter Almis under date of 6th of June 1744, and thus long before even the arrival of Your Right Excellencies' order to break up that station, was delivered to the governor by order of the king a sum of f 3000. —.—, and that principally to remove a certain claim of the lessees of the 1 per cent toll entitlement on all such goods as Meanwhile, regarding the further disposition, I have written off the debt of the former Spahan chief Nicolaas Schorer amounting to f 95405: 17.—, as well as the money buried there in the factory in Anno 1720, but found missing upon return, to the amount of f 136000.—.—; while concerning a certain item of f 3330.–.– delivered to the Spahan Governor by order of the king, regarding which Your Right Excellencies have been pleased to demand an elucidation from me to discover whether that expenditure might not have been prevented if the Spahan station had been broken up promptly, or rather in an open and clandestine manner, it respectfully serves: Hartekamp under date of primo October of the past year to inform, whether Your Right Excellencies have now become of a contrary opinion regarding that, or whether the Visitor General in his proposal paid no heed to it, I cannot judge, and for that reason I request their further order concerning this matter. From Gamron, the 20th of December, Anno 1754 From Gamron, the 20th of December, Anno 1754 I have again willingly resolved to be of service to the Honorable Company, if I had found myself provided with more men and in a state of some defense. But the entire garrison at that time consisted of only 17 heads, of whom most were very weak and emaciated by sickness; and, not deeming it worth the trouble not to let the ship Casteel van Tilburg winter here, as it could no longer be kept back by reason of the impending bad monsoon, I further judged it best to transfer the Company's effects to Souratta, where the same could be quickly converted into money, to which there was then no prospect here. It may, however, appear somewhat strange to your Right Honorable Worships that the English maintained their possession. But your Right Honorable Worships will please to know that they, in their lodge, which is barely half as large as this one, were fully 80 souls strong, and besides that had a well-manned cruiser in the roads, which stays here year in and year out until the present day. However, as a token that my bounden zeal for the Company's interest and the securing of the same made up the reason for that departure, I have willingly consented to go hither, from where I, now having obtained my discharge after a stay of some twenty years, have resolved to continue to profit and hope for favorable times. But we see to our particular sorrow and with the utmost regret that the troubles have so greatly increased after date that the resident, no longer considering himself safe, had decided to secure the Company's principal effects and to ship them aboard the ship Casteel van Tilburg, and with the vessel d'Anna to undertake the voyage via Souratta to Batavia, leaving two assistants to remain at Gamron to keep oversight over some pepper and few other effects lying there. We observe indeed on the one hand that the Resident is of the opinion that the Regents, seeing that the Company does not care much about the establishment in that country, will not only show all friendship to those who remain behind, in order thus to induce the Company to expand trade there again in the future, but also would not wish to incur the bad reputation of plundering the Company's lodge in the meantime. But we also observe on the other hand that this departure may have appeared to Your Honors as somewhat strange and precipitate, though one will not be able to judge the matter rightly except by the outcome of affairs, and indeed after the result of the dispatch of the vessel Hartekamp, it will well be seen, which will at the same time also show what demand the Netherlands cloths and further manufactures sent therewith will have had, regarding which we have already set down our considerations in our letter to Your Honors of the 27th of September 1752, to which we refer. With the Drie Papegaijen I recently received a good quantity of wool manufactures, consisting of broadcloths, begras, mahoed or poesjakie, and andassij, with some perpetuanas, says, and crown rashes, all of which are good assortments, except for the black begras, which color is not good for such heavy goods, and which have already been disposed of for a good part with well over 30 percent in net profit. But the saeken, kassen, and guinees that accompanied them turn out to be too expensive and can only be sold at a slight advance. Of the first-mentioned kinds I have again made a notable demand, and I do not doubt that this trade, as well as that of cinnamon, will now begin to make good headway, to which I shall duly contribute my part. As far as the ships and yachts are concerned, insofar as your High Honors have not yet been informed in my most recent preceding letter sent via the Getrouwigheid, and thus noting regarding the Drie Papegaijen that its unloading and reloading proceeded fairly smoothly, and that the expenses incurred thereon for board wages and otherwise amount to a sum of ƒ 1249 14 8, as appears from the expense account sent herewith under No. 23. The cargo of that vessel having been cleared, everything that pertains to the answer to your High Honors' aforementioned missive and the annexes belonging thereto being now finished, I shall in the following have the honor to bring before your High Honors' eyes with bounden respect both the state of this factory and what I have done and accomplished during a full year in the master's service. Gamron, December 20, Anno 1754 Little of the coffee beans is being sold, and of the wild cinnamon of the sort brought here successively, nothing at all; for the Timorese, however, there is hope because it is reasonably good, but the other sorts are very bad and no merchant wanted to look at them, as little as the sanderswood that will not easily be sold here. The further goods, both by pound and piece goods, will, with time, except for the fine Ceylon cinnamon noted above, sell well when trade revives somewhat. The Begras cloths, except the black color which is not good for that heavy cloth, Mahoud or Poesjaki, and andaslij recently brought, are good assortments, as are also the perpetuanas, saies, Crown rasses, and Imperials, although the colors of all of these should also be more diverse, and consist of red, blue, green, black, cinnamon, coffee, ash-gray, lead, and further mixed dark colors, all in proportion. Whereas the cloth rasses, though also of good sort, yet also not different enough in colors, are still somewhat too expensive, and so too the grograms, on which it will be known that little profit can be made.
