Concerning the summons to Batavia of the priest Maas Noerkam along with the two land-corrupters of Wetangers, Soeretroena and Rebanjar, I am obliged sincerely to disclose my observed conduct before Your High Noble Lordships, with a humble plea that the misdeed committed therein shall be pardoned through the innate generosity and goodness of Your High Noble Lordships. It conforms sufficiently with the truth and corresponds to the complaints which I made to Your High Noble Lordships concerning their persons and a Bantammer named Aadjel in a humble, separate missive of the 3rd of December last, as well as my respectful request, upon getting them all into my hands, to deliver them over to Justice, if it pleases Your High Noble Lordships, in order to establish an example as a deterrent to others, and regarding which, according to my bounden duty, I ought to have awaited the highly honored orders of Your High Noble Lordships. However, during the intervening time that I held that priest Maas Noerkam in custody in the civil detention room, it came to my knowledge that he is married to the daughter of the King's foremost pepper suppliers, the worthy Ke Aria Dupasedana, and that his own daughter is married to the brother of the ruling Sultan's fourth wife, Nyai Maas Trevia; also, on two occasions the old Sultan informed me that some money was still owed to him to the value of 50 bahars of pepper, given on credit in earlier years as a supplier; which, added to the entreaties of the entire family, who indeed confessed that he had committed an offense worthy of punishment, but begged for the sake of the father-in-law, his wife, and them, to exercise some consideration, since his principal fault consisted solely in his having had the imprudence to employ such fellows, who are by no means the best, to collect pepper, and who had carried out the evil beyond his orders; that care will be taken to compensate the damage done to the poor countryman; and they stood as sureties for his person and conduct, that in the future it will never happen again, nor would he send people to the uplands; his wife at the same time requesting that, if this plea should be favorably granted to her, he might receive a sharp reprimand so that he may remain in his old post in the ministry of the church. Having investigated this meticulously to the best of my ability, and regarding which I ought to have made a report to Your High Noble Lordships in order, if possible, to forestall the summons issued by Your High Noble Lordships that overtook me unexpectedly, having instead only waited for Ke Banjer to be delivered to me so as to attend to everything at once, and not continually trouble or vex Your High Noble Lordships; but this having failed me, Ke Banjer having indeed immediately retreated from the uplands, keeping quiet in the surroundings of Bantam, while I make it my business, although he does no harm at present, to get him into my hands; just as Soera Troena, with five innocent followers from Wetangers whom he picked up on the road, were delivered together to me by the King's servants, as was also delivered to the Prince the Bantammer Aadjel, who, because he is very sick, is still held fast in his fetters without any punishment being administered. I was most earnestly requested by the well-known minion and other influential friends not to write any letters containing any disclosure of matters until the shot was through the church, since such could be detrimental to me through interception; moreover, giving me just now the most serious assurance that I would not depart from here dissatisfied, even though many thwarted our affairs, and that I could assure Your Honorable Worship of such in his name. Thus, Noble Sir and benefactor, I must leave everything to God and still be patient for the time granted to me, though in what manner is known to no one but myself, as I am presently stripped of everything, sickly, and currently unable to afford even a cup of coffee or tea. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 2nd of March anno 1756. could reason about the Bay of Tappanoely, but having received further letters this morning from the resident at Baros, in which the entire context was communicated in detail, we have the honor to present said letters, along with their enclosures, to Your Right Honourables, respectfully adding hereto that we most humbly insist once again on obtaining positive orders, as well as the requested forces, so that we may oppose by force the hostilities which the aforementioned nation is committing here against our nation, because they cannot disguise their actions with any semblance of rightful claim or otherwise, and could not act differently if our state were in a formal war with them. We shall not enlarge upon this, so as not to weary Your Right Honourables' attention, but respectfully refer to the aforementioned quires enclosed herein, which we have been able to prepare in all haste, as this vessel, the bearer hereof, is lying ready to sail. Wherewith, after wishing Your Right Honourables all blessings, we remain. The said small vessel, returning yesterday toward evening, reported that upon arriving near the bay, a vessel bore down on him, though he did not even know whether it was an English or another vessel, wherefore, seeing no chance of entering there, he turned back and was pursued by the said vessel, and was thus forced to run into the river of Surcam, where, being there, one of the friends of Dato Poras arrived. This person had been sent by Dato Poras to Radja Boukiet, with the request that Radja Boukiet should go here to Baros and declare on his behalf that he had not the least part in the English capture of Tappanoely, and was consequently held in no respect whatsoever by the English, who have now taken post near the barong with 80 heads, half English and the other half natives, and had bought some obstructing houses, demolished them, and leveled the ground; and that they had forcibly wrested from him, Dato Poras, his contract recently concluded with the Honourable Company and had not returned it (which grieved him very much); but that the English, having that contract in hand and having read it through, had been very astonished, and had immediately gone on board the ship with all officers and principal natives and held council, intending, so it was said, to return with the ship to Nattar, and to leave two sloops as a guard before the bay, along with the aforementioned 80 heads on shore holding post there. Radja Bouckiet, who does not dare to leave his village on account of the Achinese and also because of the English, sent his brother with the enclosed letter, and at the same time requested assistance in the event that he might be attacked there. Whereupon, having called in the King and Regents, a small vessel came into the river in the meantime while they were gathered, bringing a letter from the English head of the vessels in the Bay of Tapianoeli. However, since I am entirely ignorant of the English language, I have not been able to learn its contents, and the same is forwarded to Your Honorable Worships with the reply thereto. I would indeed have had the said reply accompanied by the sergeant and some Ponghoulous, but because all those escaped and very dissatisfied Achinese are staying with 10 vessels at Tapus, and also a large portion on Poulo Pane and thereabouts, I find it only too necessary to keep my small force together. Furthermore, I have let Dato Poras know that he should only conduct himself well and faithfully toward the Honorable Company, and not get involved with the English at all, but always protest against their doings himself, with promises that, having already notified Your Honorable Worships of this incident as well as of his demonstrated loyalty, he need not doubt that the Honorable Company would assist him at all times. Anticipating Your Right Honourables' favourable approval to curb the Javanese's all-too-characteristic deceitfulness, I have, by means of a small notice, warned and ordered all coastal regents: First: That whenever the Company's army is on the march or happens to halt near their regency, and they do not immediately appear before the same, they shall be punished according to their merits. Second: That they likewise, without respect of person, shall be corrected if they do not immediately come to succour and offer assistance to their neighbouring regency in the event of an enemy invasion or raid by these so-called robes, in order to oppose them with more force and violence. Third: That in the event a regency is conquered by the enemy, and the regent and his patih happen to abandon the same without having been wounded or killed in action, they shall ipso jure not only be stripped of their regency and deprived of everything, but also rigorously punished as an example to others. Which, once occurred and put into practice, I do not doubt will make so much impression on the minds of many that they will not so easily leave their country as prey as they did previously, without first having offered manly resistance to the enemy. Having received, with the arrival of the ship 's-Gravesande on the 14th of the past month of January, Your Right Honourables' most honoured missive of the ultimate of December last, and having gathered therefrom that the same have favourably deigned to approve my humble actions in maintaining the correspondence with Mas Said, I have the honour to express my bounden gratitude to Your Right Honourables. From Souratta the 2 March 1756. pleased to express concerning the efforts shown anno passato towards a desired and advantageous expansion of the Company's commerce, accompanied by a very applicable recommendation of prudent management, which we shall dutifully take for our guidance. As also what Your High Nobilities have further pleased to note regarding that subject; although in our respectful general letter of today we have already mentioned the obstacles encountered against the continuation of the Deccan trade by way of Bassijn. Notwithstanding that the Governor of that city, Sancradje Sandet, has continuously given convincing tokens of his benevolence and attachment to the Company's interests, we cannot refrain, for the clarification of that matter, from noting further herein that that gentleman kept our Commissioner Kronenberg there in the hope that matters would still take a turn for the better, until his adversary the Governor of Salset, Ramagie Madeeuw Jonda, field commander of the Prince Nanna Ballagie Sawaij, reproached him in a letter that this served to the detriment of their master's interests, because the Governor of Bombaij was thereby given cause for complaint, and therefore refused before his departure to send the King's armada to His Highness's assistance against Tolladje Angria; with the protest that all evil consequences which might further flow therefrom would be for the account and responsibility of him, Sancradje. Whether the government of Souratta has caught wind of this, we could not say with complete certainty, but one has reason to suspect that they were expecting something of the sort, as on the occasion that one wished to ship off some goods for the Deccan trade in the still partially laden ship Lapienenburg, when he, fearful of the persecutions of the prince's brother Sedda Bawa, at long last resolved to grant our Commissioner his dispatch. However, the trade to the Deccan has not been entirely stopped for us by this, but a certain prominent Poonah merchant named Trimmikfeet and some others, who would still rather go to market with the Honourable Company than the English, even proposed to our Commissioner to send one to two ships with suitable cargoes to Denda Rajapoer or Raispoer, under the promise that, in case the Director now consented thereto, they would arrange with the Prince Jacoetchan that he should grant us the necessary prerogatives to conduct our business in his country south of Chaaul, and thus closer to the Angria, though yet better situated than Bassijn for the Deccan trade, with peace of mind; hope having then been given to them to that end, they obtained such a letter of assurance and patent from that prince as we have the honour to present here alongside to Your High Nobilities in authenticated copy, and in which, among other things, the toll is set at 1¼ percent. when again 5.
