47 From Cape of Good Hope the 13th May 1757. F 2 From Cape of Good Hope the 15th May Anno 1757. was seen, which began to give chase to them, and that they therefore, since the said vessel showed no flag, had immediately placed themselves in a state of defense. That the said ship subsequently having come up astern of them, the skipper Ian fredrik schrijver and the second mate Laurens Frieburg had gone aft onto the quarterdeck, and hailing the aforementioned vessel, asked where it came from, to which they were answered from London, upon which, being asked again by the said mate whither the voyage was bound, they received no answer to this, but immediately a broadside with heavy artillery was fired by the said vessel without even then showing its flag, for which reason the deponents also did not show theirs, yet nevertheless having let a prince's pennant fly, gave the said ship likewise a broadside from their artillery, as well as having ordered small arms to be fired at the same. That after having engaged in battle with each other in this manner for between 4 and 5 glasses, the said vessel, which they meanwhile, by the commands being shouted inboard, had realized to be an English ship, having finally ceased firing, had called out to them that the skipper was to lower the boat and come aboard them, to which the said skipper not being able to resolve, had sent the aforementioned second mate Laurens Frieburg forward to the said ship with the sea letters. That the said mate Frieburg having arrived on the aforementioned vessel, the English had also made the boat's crew come over into their vessel and, having manned the boat with their own crew, had sent it back to the said ship Ruijskenstein with two of their officers, with express orders that the skipper in person was to come aboard them, or else the ship would be taken by them to Portsmouth. That the said skipper Ian fredrik schrijver thereupon, to prevent further misfortunes and after first having turned over the command of his vessel to the chief mate, had sailed to the said English ship, and having crossed over to the same, they had not only treated him with various insults, but had even threatened to have him hanged, it having been asked of him among other things by the captain of the ship how he, the skipper, had dared presume to fire upon an English warship, whereby not only four men of its crew had been shot dead but also another had been very severely wounded, for which he not only claimed satisfaction, but furthermore also demanded from the said skipper the cash of the Honorable Company that might happen to be found in his vessel. That in response to this, the said skipper Jan Frederik schrijver having answered that, because he, the captain, had shown no flag and thus he, the skipper, could not have known with whom he had to deal, he had therefore found himself compelled to offer resistance, whereby he himself had received four wounded, adding furthermore that he had no Company cash in the ship, the aforementioned English captain had permitted him, the skipper, to return again to his vessel. That the repeatedly mentioned skipper Schrijver thereupon having returned to his vessel at one o'clock at night, and the aforementioned English officers who had remained on the same in the meantime also having sailed to their own ship, the second mate Frieburg subsequently had also returned on board around three o'clock in the morning, at which time they immediately made as much sail as possible and continued their journey, without having seen the aforementioned English ship again. That the following day, the deponents, having inspected their ship's spars, sails, and standing and running rigging, had then found that bar shot and cannonballs were stuck in various places of the ship, and that the transom beam lying above near the cabin was mostly shot away, and the main topgallant mast was shot through and through, as well as that the mizzen and main masts were severely damaged; for which reason a fish was immediately placed on the main mast, several cannonballs and bar shot were extracted from the ship, and further sustained damage having been repaired to the best of their ability, they had subsequently continued the voyage hither. While it was further attested by the aforementioned deponents that the English ship that attacked them was a two-deck ship, without them being able to learn the name of the same or of the commander on it, as your Honors will be able to see from the authentic copy of the aforementioned account annexed hereto, to which we shall therefore take the liberty, to avoid prolixity, to refer ourselves for the rest in all matters.

Furthermore, on this date the ship Bronstee, destined for Bengal, was also dispatched, concerning which vessel we cannot omit to note that, following the news received with some of the return ships that recently departed from Your Right Honourable Great Esteemed principal seat regarding the capture of the English factory Calcatta by the Moors, as well as the report subsequently made to us by the officers of the Ceylon return ship De drie Pappegaijen, namely that according to the latest news received in Ceylon from Bengal, everything there was still in a troubled state, we therefore, in our meeting of the 26th of the just-past month of April, had resolved, in order not to expose the said ship Bronstee with its important cargo of eight tons of treasure in silver bullion alone to any danger, not to allow it to depart directly from here for Bengal, but first to make a call at Nagapatnam to obtain further reports there concerning the state of affairs in Bengal. However, since upon the arrival here of the aforementioned ships Huijs ten Donk and Buijtensorg it was reported to us by their officers that everything there with regard to the Honourable Company's trade and establishment was still on a good footing, we were therefore able to waive our aforesaid adopted resolution, provided that the said ship Bronstee continued its journey directly from here to Bengal. The Bookkeeper of the aforementioned ship Ruijskenstein, Cornelis Goudberg, having very urgently requested permission, on account of the indisposition of his wife, to remain here with her until a subsequent shipping opportunity, we have taken the liberty to grant this to him with his wages struck off. Furthermore, on this date the ship Bronstee, destined for Bengal, was also dispatched, concerning which vessel we cannot omit to note that, both from the news received with some of the return ships that recently departed from Your Right Honourable Worships' capital, regarding the overrun of the English factory Calcutta by the Moors, and from the report subsequently made to us by the officers of the Ceylon return ship De drie Pappegaijen, namely that according to the latest news received in Ceylon from Bengal everything there was still in troubled circumstances, we therefore, in our meeting of the 26th of the just-elapsed month of April, had resolved, in order not to expose the aforementioned ship Bronstee with its important cargo of eight tons of treasure in bar silver to any danger, not to let it depart directly from here to Bengal, but first to have it call at Nagapattinam, in order to be able to obtain further reports there regarding the state of affairs in Bengal; but since, upon the arrival here of the above-mentioned ships Huijs ten Donk and Duijte, it was reported to us by their officers that everything there with regard to the Honourable Company's trade and affairs was still on a good footing, we were therefore able to desist from the aforementioned resolution, provided that the said ship Bronstee continues its voyage directly from here to Bengal. Having been very urgently requested by the captain of the aforementioned ship, Cornelis Goudswaard, on account of the indisposition of his wife, to be allowed to remain here with her until a subsequent shipping opportunity, we have taken the liberty to grant the same to him with stoppage of pay. Furthermore, after this document had already been prepared up to this point, there arrived in this Cape roadstead with 31 sick the previously mentioned Bengal return ship Scholtenburg, having departed on the 6th of February past from the Ganges and having sailed on the 26th of the just-passed month of April from Mauritius. To lighten the cargo of this ship Leijmuijden. 24 rolls of heavy Dutch sailcloth 24 ditto ordinary [illegible] as we also, because the work at the blacksmith shop here has had to stand still for some time on account of the great lack of smithing coals, and in addition one has come to need a quantity of double nails both for repairing the broken maintop and for manufacturing a new cross-tree and masthead for the cited return ship Buijtensorg, as well as for the service of this Government, have therefore had to take the liberty to likewise lighten from the cargo of the bearer of this: 2 barrels with double nails. in the hope that your Honorable Grand Esteemed will not take this amiss, but on the contrary, in consideration of the aforementioned unavoidable necessity, will graciously be pleased to accept it, and also that we, in order to be able to know whether and in which barrels the aforementioned nails might happen to be found, have taken the liberty to open the invoice of this ship, which after use was again properly sealed with the seal of the Honorable Company and handed over today to the ship's officers. From Cape of Good Hope the 6th of August 1757. From Cape of Good Hope the 6th of August 1757. [illegible] we further find ourselves obliged, regarding the provisions ship de Voorsigtigheid which arrived here on the 5th of April of this year, to report with regret to Your Right Honorables that after the wind had been from the west for several consecutive days, it finally came through from the northwest on the 7th of the aforementioned month of June, which immediately caused such heavy seas here in Table Bay in succession that the anchor cables of the aforementioned ship parted one after the other, and the said hull had the misfortune the following day, or the 8th of that month of June, early in the morning, to run aground on this side of the Salt River; regarding which accident an ample declaration has been provided by the skipper as well as the mates and deck officers before commissioned members from the Council of Justice of this Government, which was subsequently also duly sworn by them, we take the liberty to transmit a copy thereof herewith to Your Right Honorables, from which you will be able to observe at your pleasure, besides the circumstances concerning the wrecking of the said vessel, that by the aforementioned deponents, both regarding the severe defects that manifested themselves on that vessel during the outward voyage and regarding the poor condition in which it arrived at this place, as was mentioned in our respectful letter dated the 23rd of April last, the following was further declared, namely: That on the 30th of January last, and thus only a few days after the aforementioned ship de Voorsigtigheid came into the open sea from the Sunda Strait, a severe leak revealed itself forward in the bow, which they upon investigation found to be caused by the fact that the ship was not only completely rotten forward under the wales, but that the stem post was also moving back and forth, which leak increased over time to such an extent that already from the 28th of February following they steadily had to pump with four pumps simultaneously, and the water finally on the 10th of March last came flowing so heavily into the ship through the hell that, no longer being able to keep up with the pumping, they were consequently forced to bear away before the wind and move all the artillery from the front to the rear, whereupon they discovered not only that the seam under the bellows was completely open, but that there was also an opening above the said bellows, through which a considerably large amount of water likewise forced its way into the ship, whereupon in this extreme emergency a piece of junk of about 2 feet in length and 2 to 3 inches thick was thrust into each of those openings, and a piece of sheet lead was placed over the same, which, next to Divine help, was the only means by which the ship was then saved and did not founder despite all the pumping, having nevertheless continuously had to keep the ship pumped dry with four pumps afterward until it finally arrived safely at this Cape roadstead on the 5th of April of this year. As they have further declared that, apart from the aforementioned notable defect in the stem post, the ship was otherwise throughout the entire hull so badly conditioned and strained during the voyage that they were frequently afraid that the upper hull would have completely separated from the lower part, and that furthermore, notwithstanding that in the heavy weather at this roadstead pumping was done unceasingly with four pumps simultaneously, the leak near the stem post increased hand over hand to such an extent that before the breaking of the first or bower cable they already had over 20 inches of water at the pumps, so that if the ship had not run aground due to the breaking and parting of the cables, it would then inevitably have sunk due to the cited heavy leakage. We must also note that apart from the ship's discharged timber and approximately 12 lasts of rice that spoiled on the outward voyage having already been completely discharged before this accident, there was also an opportunity afterward to salvage the aforementioned timber, sails, ropes, etc., as well as all the artillery along with its gun carriages, together with the sails, ropes, and everything else that was of any use; whereupon it was subsequently decided in our meeting of the 26th of the past month of July, to the greatest advantage of the Honorable Company, to have the wreck broken up—which evidently cannot remain together much longer, since the lower hull is broken across in several places and almost all the knees have sprung to pieces—in order to employ the materials coming from it, and especially the timber, both for platforms under the artillery of the Castle and the other batteries and redoubts as far as it will suffice, and for the laying of bridges and other very necessary works for the service of the Honorable Company in this Government. Were salvaged by us in conformity with the orders given in Your Right Honorables' highly respected letter dated the 30th of November 1722, regarding the continuation thereof.

From Cape of Good Hope, the 6th of August 1757. from the aforementioned day on which the said ship De Voorsigtigheid happened to run aground, namely the 8th of June last, declared employable again and accepted into the service of the Honourable Company, for such wages as they had earned at the times just mentioned, but the skipper Jan Christoffel Tiede, in accordance with the abovementioned order and the custom in such cases, without earning wages, standing to return to Batavia at the disposal of Your Right Honourable Nobles upon the next shipping opportunity, we have furthermore taken the liberty, since the provisional chief mate Pieter Sijbrandsz. Flaut here locally transferred from the ship De Snoek to De Voorsigtigheid, and on that account had no responsibility to account for the goods discharged from it, to place him along with the second mate Marcus Theunisz. and boatswain Marinus Bodel on the aforementioned outbound return ships Visvliet and Buijtensorg, to attend to their duties on board them, without however granting them any wages on that account, which has respectfully been left deferred to the esteemed pleasure of their Right Honourable Nobles the Lords and Masters in the Fatherland, which, as well as the further actions taken by us with respect to the multiple mentioned wrecked vessel, we hope Your Right Honourable Nobles will be pleased to approve. Furthermore we have the honour to communicate to Your Right Honourable Nobles that on the 3rd of the passed month of July the late ship Spaanderswout arrived in the Baaij Fals with 4 deceased and 10 disabled, while its remaining crew who stayed on their feet were generally also found in such a weak condition that several of them subsequently collapsed, wherefore we have not failed to replace those crew members at once with others, and moreover to have the said vessel provided with all further necessities, through which this ship Spaanderswout, having also been brought completely into a state ready for departure on the 15th of that month of July, nevertheless had to lie waiting for a good wind until the 19th ditto, when it set sail from the aforementioned Baaij Fals for the Netherlands. Also, the following outward-bound ships of the Honourable Company subsequently arrived safely in the just mentioned Baaij Fals on the dates below, namely: 18th July Baarsande with 11 dead, 46 sick 25th ditto Thorenvliet with 9 ditto, 16 ditto which together sailed out to sea from before Rammekes on the 10th of March last. the 3rd of August Delft with 24 dead, 11 sick ditto De Vrouwe Elisabeth with 12 ditto, 12 ditto having departed from Goeree on the 19th of April of this year. being dismissed, we shall furthermore not fail to have these three others likewise proceed on their voyage from here as soon as possible to Batavia, and Thorenvliet to Ceylon, whither it is destined. 24 leagers of white Cape wine, against which, in conformity with what was noted in our respectful letter of the 23rd of April last, have been taken from the equipment of this vessel: 1 heavy anchor 1 ditto stock 3 3/36 hoeds of smithing coal all the Honourable Company's servants stationed in this Government, to still forward the copies of the letters consigned by us under dates 25, 31 May, 10, 27 June, and 15 July last to their Right Honourable Nobles the Lords Masters in the Fatherland, as well as the copies of the acts of such persons as have been promoted upon the bearer of this for the further approval of Your Right Honourable Nobles. Besides which a certain sentence of the Council of Justice here, dated the 7th of the multiple mentioned month of July, has been added in copy to this, whereby the soldier Jochem Malcho of Gorberg, being sent with this ship Baarsande, has been condemned to labour for the period of two years without pay in the Honourable Company's ropewalk on the island of Edam; to all of which papers respectfully referring ourselves, we shall further note herewith that, after the closing of our aforementioned recent humble letters, the junior merchant Aarnout Wierman, who had been stationed on the ship Leijmuijden, had to be permitted, on account of the sudden heavy indisposition of his wife, to remain here; but she having since recovered to her former health, they are to continue their voyage with one of the first ships arriving in this Table Bay to Your Right Honourable Nobles' headquarters.

From Cape of Good Hope the 20th of August 1757 the English King's ship Queensborough, mounted with 24 heavy cannon and 160 men, also commanded by Captain George Legge, which vessel having departed from Plymouth on the 4th of April prior in search of Admiral Watson, and having learned here that he was in Bengal, consequently departed thither on the 26th of this cited month of July. With which concluding this, we shall, after having commended Your Right Honourable High Mightinesses' highly esteemed persons together with the important interests of the Honourable Company to the protection of the Almighty, remain with due respect: High Noble, Right Honourable, Well-born Lord and Noble Lords; Your Right Honourable High Mightinesses' very humble and obedient servants. And having first noted that the ship Baarsande likewise set sail from False Bay on the 15th of this month, let this further serve to accompany the ship Delft, mentioned in the heading and since also made ready to sail, among whose crew such promotions have been made by us, subject to the further approval of your Right Honorable Worships, as the acts granted in this regard and likewise accompanying this in copy will further show; while according to the accompanying account, under your esteemed favorable interpretation, a heavy anchor and ditto stock have also been taken from the equipment of this vessel. Wherefore, the skipper Jan Christoffel Fiede, having been appointed to the aforementioned vessel, having been ordered to [illegible] of the 1st of this month [illegible] that because, through the considerable straining of the ship, the seams on the deck continually opened and closed during the voyage hither, without it being possible to remedy this with caulking, it inevitably followed that through the heavy rains, which they had for almost the duration of six consecutive weeks, much water ran into the hold and onto the packs through the aforementioned constantly opening seams. And that furthermore the spoiling of the rice was caused solely by the heavy leakage, although with respect to the broken porcelain [illegible] as well as floor tiles and teak staves he could give no reason, since the cases with porcelain were handed over by him here closed and in good condition, and the aforementioned floor tiles and staves were already loaded into the ship before he, skipper Fiede, was placed on the same. Whereupon, having subsequently been carefully examined by us and taking into consideration that the wetting of the aforementioned linen packs was thus caused without any neglect of the ship's officers, the same packs otherwise not only having been well stowed, but also, as appears from the rendered and sworn declaration of the ordinary commissioners Jan Adolph Kuichl and Jan Fredrik Princelius, the gross weight of the same turned out correct, and the bags, cross-ropes, and seals were found entirely intact and undamaged: we have therefore, subject to your Right Honorable Worships' esteemed favorable interpretation, decided to pass the aforementioned defects on the linens as well as the broken porcelain, floor tiles, and teak staves, as well as the spoiled rice, for the good reasons brought forward in this regard; which broken porcelain and floor tiles as well as spoiled rice therefore Delft.

From Cape of Good Hope the 13th August 1757. having been written off in the trade books of this Government, it has furthermore been decided by us regarding the aforesaid wet and damaged imported linens, to cause the same to be sold at public auction for whatever they may fetch, in conformity with the orders in your Right Honourable worships' esteemed letter dated 17th October 1749; with the exception of the 80 pieces of bleached Coast Guineas found among them which, as they are still fit to serve for use in the Honourable Company's hospital, it was therefore deemed best to supply gradually thereto; just as the broken teak staves shall likewise be employed in the service of the Honourable Company, whether as dunnage for the ships or wherever they will otherwise be of use; as your Right Honourable worships may further inspect all this at your pleasure from the annexed extract from our resolutions taken on the 16th of this month, to which is also annexed an authentic copy of the aforementioned granted as well as sworn statement of the commissioners who assisted at the discharging of the repeatedly mentioned goods, we therefore take the liberty to refer in all respect to both. Batavia After the ships Vrouwe Petronella and Delft, which had been lying in False Bay, had resumed their journeys from there, the first-mentioned on the 25th of August last towards Ceylon, and the next day thereafter or the 26th ditto towards your Right Honorable capital, there have again safely arrived at this Cape roadstead on the 6th and 19th of this current month September, the ships De Getrouwigheid with 27 dead and 14 sick, and the Vrouwe Petronella with 41 deceased and 40 invalids, but otherwise regarding the ships themselves in very good condition; which two vessels, having put to sea from Texel on the 26th of May past in company with the Amsterdam ships De Spaarsaamheid, Wiltrijk, 'T Huijs te Manpad, and Rosenburg, remained together until the 26th of June following, when the officers of the last-mentioned five vessels having resolved to call at the Island of St. Iago for refreshment, separated from them thereupon and set their course thither, from where said vessels are now also daily expected here; meanwhile the more-mentioned ship De Getrouwigheid has become ready to sail and travel again, wherewith we have the honor to transmit to your Right Honorable, as shown by the invoice sent herewith, the following from the products of this country: 1887 lb Butter 7 half aams with cauliflower 7 ditto ditto sour ditto 6 ditto ditto red ditto 2 pots with candied bitter oranges Right Honorable, highly esteemed, noble-born Lord and Noble Lords. — Batavia To his Excellency the Right Honorable, highly esteemed, noble-born Lord Jacob Mossel, General of the Infantry in the service of their High Mightinesses the Lords States General of the United Netherlands, also on their behalf and the East India Company's Governor General and the Noble Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies.
