From Java's East Coast, the 19th of April From Java's East Coast, the 29th of April as shown by the invoices that we transmit herewith, along with the bills of lading pertaining thereto, together with two additional invoices of accounting regarding goods delivered short by the said vessel and expenses incurred on provisions supplied to some of the crew members, amounting to the sum of ƒ 325:5. This is further accompanied by a bill of lading and invoice for what was laden onto the ship Woitkensdoop at Tagal, to the amount of ƒ 3141:—, respectfully requesting the write-off of what was provided to Amstelveen at Japara and here, as well as the expenses incurred on the bark Den Spaceur at Grissee, amounting together to ƒ 1090: 2: 8. Furthermore, we have the honor to present to Your Right Excellencies the European pay-books of the year 1755/6, in accordance with the register accompanying this, as well as two debt-rolls: the one for such native soldiers as are serving on the two pantjallangs and are assigned as sailors, the other for similar soldiers who have been discharged from the service and are all formally registered on Batavia. With the said vessel there travel across one lieutenant, one sergeant, two corporals, one master, and thirty-three European soldiers who have long wandered about in the field and have strongly insisted upon their discharge, as well as two slaves who deserted from the Batavia craft-quarter and were captured here. Furthermore, we still pray for a favorable answer concerning the acceptance of sugar pro rata for the relief of the deplorable millers, requesting further a letter of discharge for the cooper Godfried Weederspaan, whom we have already discharged from the service on account of the expiration of his term. To this must be added that during the dry season this machine must stand idle for fully 4 to 5 months due to lack of water, and thus it remains an expense item for the Honourable Company that seems likely to increase from year to year; therefore, we consider it our duty to bring these our considerations respectfully to the attention of Your High Mightinesses. Provisionally, and until further instructions from Your High Noblenesses and Right Honourables, we have ordered the capricious and interested Pauw not to commence any repair, however minor it might be, henceforth, unless the specification of requirements has been signed as needed not only by him, but also by the millwright stationed there, and approved and inspected by us; having also reproached him for the last time for his disobedience and disregard of our orders concerning that sawing machinery, as well as for certain expressions in his missive that exceeded the bounds of respect and propriety, and ordered that the beams judged by him to be unfit for sawing be piled up and laid aside, until such time as they shall be examined and inspected by our commissioners, in order likewise to curb and rein in greed in this regard, and to prevent the murmuring of the regents, avoiding sad consequences and the carrying off of treasures, whereof the Company, God knows, has had all too much experience on this island; the more so since this mill is truly a burdensome charge for the place, considering its expenditure.
