From Java's East Coast the 17th of November 1757 From Java's East Coast the 17th of November 1757: Oost Capelle, still needing to be caulked from the outside and inside, it is to be expected that this vessel, as well as Woitkensdorp, will have to winter at Rembang, notwithstanding that the chief and resident have been commanded to apply the required speed. The officials of Sourabaija having, upon our written inquiry, according to Your Right Honourables' order, reported regarding the hemp sail yarn that no hemp grows in that entire eastern corner, but indeed at Cheribon a fibrous herb named Ramie, customary for lines and fishing nets, as appears from the Extract Sourabaija letter, which we present to Your Right Honourables alongside this. Further, following the above-mentioned letter of the 29th of October, we have dispatched the pantjallang De Hoop to the eastern corner, in order to proceed from there with the voyage to Amboina upon the breaking through of the west winds, and since the natives hired for delivering that pantjallang thither were apprehensive that they might sometimes be detained in that province, and could not be hired other than on the condition of being sent back hither via Batavia after the arrival of that small vessel, we have caused the ministers of that government to be so written to, just as we have done to the resident of Rembang, to prepare the demanded 400 pieces of bored pump timbers; but as the thickness and length of those timbers and for what they are intended are unknown to us, since according to the statement of the master carpenter there, the pumps are bored in a very different manner and those on ships or for chaloups are entirely different from those that shall serve for water conduits, and for this also different tools are required, we therefore respectfully request to be provided with some and to be allowed to obtain clarification in this regard, to the end of being able to fulfill the demand according to our ability, also insisting on a sculptor for the Rembang trading station, since the non-completion of the vessels, recently sent to Batavia, as the Resident Van Suchtelen has reported to us, was caused by the lack of such a workman; the master of the ship carpenters there further beseeching to be allowed to know how far Your Right Honourables' honored intention extends regarding the complete finishing of the vessels, the old metal having been sent to Grissee, as the best place for it, to be cast into fifty-pound weights and sent to Your Right Honourables, conform to whose orders the resident of Sumanap has been commanded to account for himself regarding what was written with respect to the pass granted by him to Palembang and what further pertains thereto, while in the meantime, concerning the pass mistakenly issued here, we have the honor to report that the Chinese Igoa Oeijkiem, owner of two vessels, has kept one toward Palembang, with the juragan Tjoa Zeeks appointed by him upon it, and has himself sailed with the other vessel to Batavia, and likely thus the passes were mistakenly exchanged, more attention will, however, henceforth be used in that regard by those who alongside this cause to be sent to Your Right Honourables the invoices of the cargo of the ships: Zeekerlust at Sourabaija to the amount of ƒ 21239: —: — De Drieheuvelen at Qualladamak to the amount of ƒ 11363: 14: 8 The pantjallang De Uijtkijk at Sourabaija to the amount of ƒ 409: 14: — as well as a settlement invoice for Batavia on account of the pantjallang De Hoop to Amboina amounting to ƒ 2662: 24: —, accompanied by the expense accounts of the ships: Zeekerlust at Sourabaija, to the amount of ƒ 227: 5: 8 De Drieheuvelen at Qualladamak to the amount of ƒ 183: 19: — Woitkensdorp at Samarang to the amount of ƒ 38: 8: — Of which we respectfully request write-off, as also for a letter of discharge for the painter Hans Pieter Wijpel of Kaup, whose humble petition is attached hereto, and finally payment of a bill of exchange in favor of Dominee Petrus Marchant amounting to a sum of ƒ 4392: —: —, a ditto in favor of Simon Josephe amounting to ƒ 19200: —: —. Finding this report entirely unsatisfactory according to the orders that this assistant has, nor letting myself be satisfied with it in accordance with the most obedient commands of Your Noble Honours, I have immediately placed the assistant Schoester under sharp correction to submit a further and clearer report of that keel, as the same up to this moment is not yet within sight of this Command.
