233 From Java's East Coast, the 8th of November 1757 From Java's East Coast, the 8th of November 1757. ...from which it will appear for what reason his prime minister, according to what was communicated by me today, does not come or send, which, however, will assuredly take place early next year, being unable to find any other reason than what His Highness says about not being able to get ready, and he seems to want to treat that embassy according to old custom, the time having elapsed because the said prime minister, together with the one of the Susuhunan, were occupied with each other for quite some time regarding the division and exchange of some places and the arrangement of the birds' nest cliffs, etc., and the time having passed on that account. Those ministers have written me a letter about their proceedings and agreement, as have the princes regarding their reconciliations and approvals adopted therein, so that finally that great work has reached its complete conclusion, and I have the honor to present to Your Right Excellencies copies of those letters. I find everything to be well also from Semarang up to here, and regarding the regent of Pekalongan, subject to the approval of Your Right Excellencies, I will look on for another year; he makes great promises, and the long drought that we have had still pleads somewhat in his favor, and he has for the first part collected and delivered two thirds of his contingent. The timber forests look sparse and thin, which cannot be otherwise, as they decrease annually and nothing is added. The sugar mills have all delivered their small share of 300 piculs per mill, and are now stranded with the remaining sweet substance, hoping and praying for an increase in delivery, as I submit for the consideration of Your Right Excellencies to establish on the last of December a general lease along this coast on the export of said sugar, however with the exclusion of that which or that quantity which is delivered to the Company; for it is impossible for the residents to watch over everything and have all small rivers, streams, and creeks observed, and it will probably still yield something for the Company, regarding which otherwise I find little benefit; for although those millers complain exceedingly, and indeed let it be known that they no longer wish to mill, they nevertheless plant cane again, and thus will indeed have to seek an outlet seaward. From From Sumatra's West Coast the 15 November 1757. this Register Translation of a Javanese letter written by the Sultan Hamengkubuwana Senapati Ingalaga Abdul Rahman Sayidin Panatagama Khalifatullah to his grandfather, His Excellency the Lord Governor General Jacob Mossel and the Right Honorable Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies residing at Batavia. From Sumatra's West Coast, the 15th of November 1757. in the future will be avoided, respectfully offering my apologies on that account; having only permitted their crossing over upon their requests, in order properly to execute Your High Noble Excellencies' commands conveyed in the secret letters of 27 August of the past year, inasmuch as the English, more than ever, trampling upon all law, proceed arbitrarily in the northern districts. In order to bring this clearly before the illustrious eyes of Your High Noble Excellencies, may Your High Noble Excellencies be pleased to consider the apprehension and arrest of the regent of Tamboeijang, Radja Bannaar; the forcible taking up of a post in his settlement by those Britons, all according to letters from the Resident of Aijerbangis, dated 12 October last, enclosed herewith; the violence on Nias in the settlement of Gounong Limbo, notwithstanding that our post on Gourang Titoulie is not far situated from there, according to the enclosed translated Malay letter and the attestation of the Malay merchant Nachoda Caijd, dated 7 and 24 October last; the searching of the small prahus passing by Tappiahoulij bound for our residency of Baros, taking white gum out of them by force, according to the Resident's letters dated 30 June of this year. These are all matters that demonstrate that they proceed undaunted in their reckless undertaking, without fearing to be opposed therein, and thus it is to be feared that the entire coast will be invaded by them, or at least that we will be hemmed in to such an extent that very little will remain for us to do. For, according to their opinion, they are permitted to settle wherever our Company has no trading post, and if they were to establish themselves at Ticou to the north and Battang Cappas to the south, we would be cut off from everything. Even if the regents remained ever so faithfully attached to us, it would be impossible for them to resist any European power, much less attack them in such a manner as to dislodge any of those Britons. Allow me also to assure Your High Noble Excellencies that a further encroachment can by no means be prevented unless one is permitted to act in the same manner as that nation, that is to say, with positive orders to attack them and to drive them from their established posts by force. For one cannot be in all places at the same time, and once their flag has been planted, it could not be pulled down without embroilments. I shall by no means fail, however, according to Your High Noble Excellencies' commands, to keep those affairs lingering and to encourage the native regents to resist any further encroachment as much as possible, from which, however, I cannot promise much good, just as little as that any harm or detriment can be brought to that nation in trade for this main station, the Chinese, Adjarhadja, and Aijer Bangis. For, not to mention that half of what we bring is not sufficient to supply the coast with cloths according to its demand, they also, by setting their linens below our market price, entice the natives from our side, just as we take freights from them, and the chance is indifferent whether Adjarhadja is currently disposing of some cloths. Wherefore I am imploring a favorable consideration of the gum accepted and dispatched last year; they also entice the common natives from our districts with small presents and spending money, to which we do not find ourselves authorized. Allow, High Noble, stern, Grand and Honorable Lords, your humble servant to state that, since one absolutely may not use force, the only means left to us consists in our first with all vigor preserving the trade. But it does not follow from this that the English will miss that gold, while indeed Piplo Chinco, Salempoeris brown and blue, and Guinees common bleached and similar best-demanded assortments can be sold everywhere on this coast without the least difficulty, so that not a piece will remain. Still less are we able, for the present, to inflict a perceptible pinch on them to the north in their turnover, because the benzoin and camphor are accepted by them, and with us it is somewhat risky to receive them, notwithstanding Your High Noble Excellencies' highly respected orders by letters of the years 1744 and 1745, of which the extracts are also annexed hereto, from which

And do we not have ten opportunities against one for the English to push those aromatics off our hands? Secondly, the old rebel at Passamang, Southan Kinalij, must be severely chastised once for continually bringing rice to Natten and Tappianoulij; one must secure for good that through lack of food they fall into hindrance, somewhat reduce their strong garrison, and thus, being kept in unrest and in motion by the native, cannot think much about trade through lack of merchants.
