From Cape of Good Hope, the 13th of May 1758. 22 pieces of cannon and 100 men, which under command of Captain Lars Swane set sail from Copenhagen on the 26th of November of the past year, and is to depart shortly from the cited False Bay for Tranquebar; whereas, in contrast, the Danish ship Copenhagen, mentioned in our aforesaid last respectful letter, continued its voyage from here to Denmark on the 11th of this month. Wherewith ending this, after having commended Your Right Honorable respected persons, together with the important interests of the Honorable Company, to the protection of the Almighty, we remain with due respect. Below stood: High Noble, Right Honorable, Highborn Lord and Noble Lords; lower: Your Right Honorable's very humble and obedient servants; was signed: R: Tulbagh, I: Swellengrebel, P: V Reede van Oudshoorn, R: S: Alleman, C:s Brand, D:l D'Aillij, P: Hacker, [illegible] Bergh; in the margin: In the Castle of Good Hope, the 13th of May Anno 1758. P:S: After the signing of this, the ship Giesenburg has also arrived at this Cape anchorage with 89 dead and 11 sick, but otherwise in good condition. Register of the letters and papers which under today's date are dispatched from here via the ships Lijcochton and 't Huijs te Boede to the as aforesaid: No 1. Original dispatch sent by the Noble Governor Rijk Tulbagh, together with the Council of this place, to His aforementioned Excellency and the Noble Councilors aforesaid. 2. Authentic copy of dispatch dated 20th of this month, written by and to the same as just mentioned, with the ship Langewijk, which is currently lying ready to sail in False Bay. 3. Findings on the trade books of this government for the years 1753/4 and 1754/5, with the answers and reports made thereto, the same being annexed. 4. Extract of the Resolution taken here on the date of 4 March 1755, containing the disposition regarding 35. From Cape of Good Hope, the 22nd of May 1758. regarding the floor tiles and teak staves sent hither from Batavia with the provision ship Diemen, which latter were embezzled by the officers of that hull. No 5. Extract of dispatch under the 13th of the same month of March concerning the very same subject, written to His aforementioned Excellency and the Noble Lords aforesaid per the provision ship Nieuw Vijvervreugd. 6. Bill of lading and invoice of the wines and other products of this country, as shipped here for Batavia in these now departing ships Lijcochten and 't Huijs te Boede. 7. Authentic copy of report of committee members from the Court of Justice here, who tasted the aforementioned wines and found them to be in good condition. 8. Ditto, ditto acts of such persons who were provisionally promoted on the bearers of this. 9. Ditto demand of necessities recently made from Ceylon for this government. 10. Receipt of the empty water leaguers discharged from the ships 't Huijs te Boede and Lijcochton. 11. To the as aforementioned: While the ship Langewijk is currently lying ready to sail with our latest respectful letter of the day before yesterday, annexed hereto in copy, to leave False Bay with the first favorable wind and continue the voyage to Your Right Honorable's main seat, the ships Lijcochton and 't Huijs te Boede mentioned in the heading of this are also dispatched from here today, with which we have the honor to forward to Your Right Honorable the following goods, namely: with Lijcochton: 5 lasts of rye 20 leaguers of red stomach wine 10 ditto ditto farmers' Drakenstein wine 4 aams of ditto Constantia wine as a present 92 lb fine garden seeds 73½ ditto coarse ditto 25 ditto canary seed 40000 pieces of hard almonds 44200 ditto crack ditto 50 lb sour apples 40 ditto ordinary ditto 50 ditto pears 5 half aams of winter pears ditto ditto quince 1992½ lb elephant tusks, namely: 738½ lb of the first sort 1218 ditto second ditto 36 ditto third ditto which are branded with the Honorable Company's mark and written with each one's weight; with 't Huijs te Boede: 4 half aams of Pontac 4 ditto tint wine 5 ditto winter pears 5 ditto grue 200 lb marmalade 4 lasts of beans ¼ ditto peas 2 ditto fine barley as all this will become further apparent from the bills of lading and invoices made thereof and forwarded alongside this, accompanied by the copies of the acts of the persons who had to be promoted by us on these two ships subject to further approval by Your Right Honorable; besides which we also take the liberty to send back to Your Right Honorable alongside this the findings on the trade books of this government for the years 1753/4 and 1754/5, in the hope that the answers and reports made thereto may give satisfaction to Your Right Honorable. From Cape of Good Hope, the 23rd of May 1758. by the ships Lijcochten and Thuijs te Boeden Batavia To as mentioned repeatedly This serves solely to dutifully bring to the knowledge of your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships that yesterday evening the ship Bosch en Hooven arrived safely in False Bay with 104 dead and 5 sick, though otherwise well-conditioned with regard to the ship itself, having lain at St. Jago for refreshments from the 15th of February last to the 10th of March following; which vessel we shall not fail to dispatch from the aforementioned False Bay on its journey to the capital seat of your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships as speedily as possible. A packet under open seal containing the pay accounts of the now departing ships 't Slot van Cappelle and Bosch en Hoven. 5. Account of expenses for that which those vessels have consumed at this place. below stood: In the Castle of Good Hope, the 10th of June 1758. was signed: I: C: Ronnenkamp, in the margin: furthermore, with both ships under No. 6, a receipt of the water casks discharged from the bearers hereof is being transmitted. by the ships 't Slot van Cappelle and Bosch en Hoven Batavia To as aforesaid The ships Langewijk, Lijcochton, and Thuijs te Boede having departed on the 24th of the just passed month of May, both from False Bay and from this Cape roadstead, for the capital seat of your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships, and the ship Giessenburg, destined for Ceylon, having also continued its journey thither on the 29th of the same month, there have since also been made ready for the continuation of their voyage the ships named in the heading, 't Slot van Cappelle and Bosch en Hoven; on the former of which vessels, the skipper having died, we, subject to the further approval of your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships, have appointed as skipper the chief mate Michiel Hamelo of Copenhagen, to whom the said vessel with its cargo, specie, etc., has been duly delivered by specially appointed commissioners according to the orders of the Honourable Company; in addition to which, such personal advancements among the mates and lower officers had to be made, both on the said ship 't Slot van Cappelle and on that of Bosch en Hoven, as your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships will be pleased to observe more closely from the acts granted for this purpose and accompanying this in copy; while the commander of the soldiers assigned to the first-named vessel, Adolph Thierens, was obliged to remain at this place on account of his severe illness. Furthermore, on the 29th of the aforesaid month of May, the ship de Zeelelij also arrived safely in False Bay with 4 dead and 27 sick, though for the rest well-conditioned; wherefore we shall not fail to dismiss the same without any delay as soon as it shall have been discharged of the goods loaded in it for this place, and the spars required by it shall have been made ready. But the ship Velsen, destined for China, having not appeared here up to now, gives us sufficient certainty that its officers—just as they made known to those of Vlietlust on the voyage hither—must have sailed past this corner of the land and continued the voyage directly to Batavia, where we wish to hope that the said vessel may already have arrived safely before the arrival of the bearer hereof. Meanwhile, concerning the ship de Batavier, currently also staying in the repeatedly mentioned False Bay and fully loaded in the fatherland with goods for this government, we must dutifully bring to the knowledge of your Most Noble and Right Honourable Worships that, since the said vessel could not head for this Cape roadstead before the 15th of May last, and was thus compelled, pursuant to the general orders of the Most Noble and High Honourable Lords Directors in the Fatherland, to enter the mentioned False Bay, it was therefore submitted for careful consideration by the undersigned Governor in our meeting of the 30th of the same month of May, how one ought now to act with respect to the discharging of the said ship de Batavier, since regarding such

From Cape of Good Hope, the 10th of June 1758. unloading as well as letting it come up again. such ships fully laden for this government, as no exceptions have yet been made in the aforementioned order, namely that they might call at this Table Bay during the winter season in order to unload the goods shipped therein here, and that on the other hand it proved to be by no means feasible to have this done in False Bay, for the reason that no facility is found there to be able to store the disembarked goods, and that as regards having the repeatedly mentioned goods brought over here with the hookers Termijen and the Hector stationed here, there also resided this difficulty: that the said hookers cannot transport the cargo of the cited ship the Batavier except in two voyages, and moreover there would still have to be brought here by them various voluminous goods that were also brought for this government with the aforementioned ships 'Tslot van Cappelle, Bosch en Hoven, and Zeelelij; and experience regarding this has taught more than once that the said hookers have spent two to three weeks, indeed even an entire month, not only to sail from here to False Bay or indeed from there to here, so that it might then also easily happen that with the transfer of the cited goods in this manner things would run so contrary that the winter season might already have passed before the said vessel the Batavier had been discharged of its cargo; while one would then find oneself in no less embarrassment with regard to its reloading, considering that, in view of the small amount of grain that one has as yet been able to send off to your Right Honourable headquarters due to lack of space in the ships that have passed here, it necessarily having to be fully laden with this grain, it would likewise not be very feasible to have this done in the repeatedly mentioned False Bay; wherefore, all this having been attentively deliberated, it had to be resolved by us for the best service of the Honourable Company to let the aforementioned ship the Batavier remain in False Bay until after the expiration of the present winter season, in the same manner as was done in the years 1750 and 1754 with the provision ships Polanen and Diemen, in order subsequently to come up to this Cape roadstead for unloading and reloading, but that, in order to keep your Right Honours as much as possible out of embarrassment with respect to the crew assigned to it

To keep only 25 to 30 heads of the crew here on the Wiltrijk, both to guard the ship and to perform the daily ship's work, while the largest part of the other people are transferred to the carriers of this, the ships 't Slot van Cappelle and Bosch en Hoven, to be sent on to Batavia. As this is now taking place in this manner, we hope that Your Right Honourable Worships will be pleased to approve of this disposition made by us. Meanwhile, taking into consideration on this occasion that similar cases might occur more often in the future, it was resolved to respectfully request orders from the Right Honourable Gentlemen Majors in the Fatherland concerning how one shall conduct oneself in the future in this regard. From the ship Wiltrijk, which departed from here on the 30th of November of last year, among other goods unloaded here for this Government, 62 carvel planks were discharged without being found noted on the invoice of the said vessel. Consequently, they were at that time recorded only as a memorandum in the trade books here. However, as now, by the invoice of the above-mentioned ship De Batavier, this Government has been charged from the Fatherland for 75 pieces of the aforesaid planks sent hither with the aforesaid ship Wildrijk, we have taken the liberty to charge the 13 pieces of carvel planks short-delivered to Your Right Honourable Worships' capital in the accompanying invoice drawn up for that purpose. By the ship Bleijswijk Batavia To as aforesaid: After the ship De Zeelelij had continued its voyage on the 2nd of July following from False Bay to your Right Honourable headquarters with our last respectful letters of the 20th of June past, enclosed herewith in copy, the following 2 outward-bound ships have subsequently arrived safely again at the aforementioned place at the times specified below, namely: — 19 July Bleijswijk with 14 dead, 44 sick, having departed from Goeree on the 9th of April of this year. 29 ditto De Standvastigheid with 24 dead, 60 sick, which sailed to sea from the aforementioned roadstead on the 20th of the same month of April. 43. From Cape of Good Hope, the 5th of August 1758. Per the ship Blijkwijk Batavia To the same as aforesaid: After the ship Zeelelij, carrying our last respectful letter of the 20th of June last enclosed herewith in copy, had continued its journey on the 2nd of July following from False Bay to your Right Honourable headquarters, the following 2 outward-bound ships safely arrived again at the aforementioned place at the times specified below, namely: 19 July, Bleijswijk, with 14 dead and 44 sick, having departed from Goeree on the 9th of April of this year. 29 ditto, Standvastigheid, with 24 dead and 60 sick, which put to sea from the aforementioned roadstead on the 20th of the same month of April. Both vessels being otherwise in very good condition, we did not fail to have the aforementioned ship Bleiswijk provided as quickly as possible with everything necessary for the further journey, so that the said vessel could be dispatched on this date; furthermore, we shall by no means fail to dismiss the Standvastigheid without the slightest loss of time; its officers having reported to us that at the time of their departure one of the ships fitted out by the Zeeland Chamber was also ready to sail, and likewise that the Hoorn ship Geregtigheid was to be mustered on the 6th of May last, subsequently to put to sea with the first favorable wind. We therefore hope that the said two ships will also arrive in good condition at this Government shortly; meanwhile, we take the liberty, besides the general muster roll of the servants stationed in this Government, to send your Right Honours herewith also the copies of the appointments of such persons as have been promoted by us on the bearer of this, subject to your esteemed further approval. Per the ship Bleijswijk Cape roadstead having arrived the Zeeland outward-bound ship 't Hof d'Uno, which set sail from Rammekens on the 24th of April past, and we shall not fail to dispatch the said vessel to Your Right Honourable Worships' capital as soon as the physical condition of its crew shall permit. From Cape of Good Hope, 16 September 1758. added, continued its voyage on the 24th of the just-past month of August from False Bay to Your Right Honorable capital, and the companion ship 't Huijs te Manpad sailed from here to the Netherlands the day before, subsequently the following outward-bound vessels of the Honorable Company arrived again at this Cape roadstead on the dates below: 25 August Luxemburg with 22 dead and 53 sick 27 August Buijtensorg with 30 dead and 45 sick 4 September Leijden with 59 dead and 84 sick having put to sea together from Texel on 7 May last 14 September Vliervliet with 8 dead and 20 sick, which set sail from off Rammekens on the 10th of the aforesaid month of May. Of which mentioned vessels, the first two, namely Luxemburg and Buijtensorg, have again reached such a state of departure that they could be dispatched with complete confidence on the date of this letter; which, however, with regard to their aforementioned companion Leijden, as well as the previously arrived Zeeland ship 't Hof d' Uno, could by no possibility take place as yet, since the sick of the first-mentioned vessel have now increased to 110 persons, and those of 't Hof d' Uno likewise are not only still very weak, but also many of the people who had been on duty at this place have collapsed along the way, so that currently another 120 disabled persons from the said vessel are lying in the hospital, regarding whose recovery everything possible is being done; further, we shall not fail, as soon as the condition of the crews of these From Cape of Good Hope, 16 September 1758. these two ships will permit it, to dismiss them without any delay, as well as the aforesaid recently arrived ship Vliervliet, as quickly as practicable from here; while regarding the ship de Batavier, which wintered in False Bay, we shall have the honor to advise that the said vessel arrived from the mentioned bay at this Cape roadstead on 21 August last, and thereupon was immediately unloaded of the goods it had on board, and is now being loaded again with wheat, and thus, with continuing manageable weather, will be able to continue its voyage likewise to Batavia within a few days. From Cabo de Goede Hoop, 16 September 1758. having reached, therefore it was submitted for consideration by the undersigned Governor in our meeting of 29 August last that, since to date no further news whatsoever has been received from India regarding the aforementioned ship de Naarstigheijd with the return ships that have successively passed this Government, nor has any report been received of the same from here inland, which latter would certainly have occurred if that vessel had put into port anywhere along this coast from Baaij d'ala Goa in this direction, one could therefore with respect to the said vessel only entertain this hope: that considering the Bay of S:t Augustijn on the island of Madagascar, as well as that of Rio de la Goa, were the closest that it had within reach when it was met by the aforementioned English ship the Lawar, its officers could consequently have turned the prow toward one of those bays; but having been unable to put to sea again due to the poor condition, either of ship or crew, and also having had no opportunity to give any report thereof either hither or elsewhere, the often-mentioned vessel might possibly still find itself in such a state in one of the same, just as one had seen a similar example thereof with the English ship the Elisabeth, which, having been forced by suffered disasters in the year 1750 to call at the aforementioned Bay of Rio de la Goa, had to linger there for several months, and undoubtedly would have had to remain lying at that place much longer if the Honourable Company's small ship the Haase had not From Cabo de Goede Hoop, 16 September 1758. not also arrived by chance in the same bay, and rendered so much assistance to the said English ship that it had been able to come over from there hither; after which matters having been attentively deliberated upon in the aforementioned meeting, it was deemed necessary by us for the greatest service of the Honourable Company, pursuant to the further proposal made by the well-mentioned Lord Governor, and consequently resolved, to dispatch the hooker the Hector, which is stationed here, to the cited bays of S:t Augustijn and Rio de la Goa, in order to render the required assistance to the often-mentioned ship de Naarstigheijd, in case it should find itself in a helpless condition in one of those places, so that it may come hither; or otherwise to be able to salvage something of its cargo as well as its surviving crew members; and furthermore, in order that this expedition shall by no means be without fruit or profit for the Honourable Company, a small cargo of various goods in demand in Madagascar and Rio de la Goa should be laden into the said hooker, in order to barter the same in the mentioned Bay of S:t Augustijn for some half-grown slaves, as well as at the last-mentioned place for a parcel of elephant tusks; in conformity with which resolution the aforementioned vessel, having been provided with provisions and other necessities, as well as a few crew members above its ordinary number, departed from here yesterday for the aforementioned purpose, the skipper commanding thereon, Hans Harmansz, having among other things also been principally ordered by us, that in case From Cabo de Goede Hoop, 16 September 1758. the aforementioned vessel de Naarstigheijd should happen to be at Rio de la Goa, and it should be in such a poor state with its crew that the crew of the hooker was also necessarily required to bring that ship hither, in case the same should be or could be made capable of undertaking the voyage, he, skipper Harmensz, shall then leave his cited vessel lying at that place only with as many crew as will be necessary to guard the same, proceed with all the remaining crew to de Naarstigheijd, and thus help bring that vessel to this place; but if the ship should be entirely unable to undertake the voyage hither, the said skipper shall in such case transfer as much of the finest goods, whether of silks, linens, or otherwise, from the cargo of that vessel into his hooker as can conveniently be stowed therein, and thereupon return with the same as speedily as possible to this place, as Your Right Honourable Worships will be pleased to observe more closely from the instruction transmitted herewith in copy, which was framed by us regarding this expedition for the said skipper Hans Harmensz, to which we take the liberty to refer, in the further hope that Your Right Honourable Worships will be pleased to approve the aforementioned resolution taken by us in this regard. To govern ourselves accordingly, and to let this present letter serve to accompany the ships Leijden, 't Hoff d' Uno, and the Batavier, which three vessels are now departing from here with completely healthy and recovered crews, we therefore wish to hope that they may also arrive at Batavia in like manner, having further the honor to forward the following to Your Right Honorable Excellencies, namely: With Leijden: 8 Lasts of Wheat. With 't Hof d' Uno: 5 Leggers of red stomach wine. 20 ditto local red or Drakenstein ditto. 10 half aams of cauliflower. 10 ditto ditto savoy ditto. 8 ditto ditto sour ditto. 8 ditto ditto red ditto. As appears more fully from the accompanying bills of lading and invoices, which are accompanied by the copies of the deeds of the persons who have been promoted by us on these three ships subject to the further approval of Your Right Honorable Excellencies, as well as a roll of names of a certain native who had been banished here, named Salomon of Batavia, who, owing to the expiration of his banishment, is now crossing over on Leijden. Meanwhile, we shall furthermore dutifully note here that the English ship the Prince George, mentioned in our above-referenced latest respectful letter, set sail from here for Bengal on the 23rd of this month. The ships 'T Hof d' Uno, Leijden, and the Batavier having departed from here with our latest respectful letter of 30 September last on the 2nd and 3rd of the present month of October, the bearers of this, the ships Visvliet and the Geregtigheijd, are now also being dispatched, which two vessels being accordingly about to continue their voyage with the first favorable opportunity possibly to Your Right Honorable Excellencies' main settlement, we wish to hope that they may arrive there with prosperity, while we find ourselves obliged to note with respect to them that, notwithstanding all such recovered crewmen as were in any way capable of going to sea again having been placed on them to replace their dead incurred on the voyage hither as well as those remaining here incapacitated, one has nevertheless not been able to bring the crews of those vessels higher than 192 heads for Visvliet and 202 heads for the Geregtigheijd, because the remaining sick lying in this hospital, who still make up a number of between 250 and 260, having been mustered in the presence of the skippers and chief surgeons of the bearers of this, were found not only to be generally still very weak, but moreover also to be afflicted for a large part with chronic severe injuries and ulcerations, with the healing of which some time will consequently still necessarily elapse; we shall nevertheless in no way fail, as far as this can be done, to send the aforesaid incapacitated men, many of whom are nevertheless totally incurable, over to India without the slightest delay with the first outbound ships departing from here after their recovery. While the remaining crew happen to be in such a weak condition that immediately some people from the Company's wharf had to be sent to the said vessel to help moor her, for which reason we shall by no means fail to employ everything that shall be possible for the speedy recovery of those disabled persons, in order thus to be able to let the aforementioned ship Welgeleegen continue her voyage again without long delay.
