From Surat under date the 14th April 1758 to lead through the garden. But if His Honour should resolutely intimate the fear lurking among the regents that we might erect a formal fortress instead of a lodge, Your Honours may reassure him that such was never our intention; adding that the regents have allowed themselves to be led astray from the right path regarding us long enough by such false rumors of our adversaries, so that it is to be hoped they will no longer mind them, but will judge our true intention from our always maintained peaceful conduct; and indeed, for greater certainty, they can clearly insert in the Parwana to be granted that no bastions or the least fortifications may be made to the lodge, and also send commissioners from time to time to take ocular inspection as to whether anything is done contrary thereto. And in case His Honour contrary to expectation should already in this first interview show that he would not be averse to granting us what is desired against payment of a moderate recognition, Your Honours may, by way of discourse and as if of your own accord, add that the Company, obtaining what is desired stipulated by a binding contract, will certainly not show itself ungrateful; and that Your Honours, although not ordered to enter into negotiations on that point, nevertheless undertake to make a detailed report to me of everything that His Honour might propose in that regard. I expect from Your Honours a clear and detailed account of your experiences in writing, and remain, below was written, Your Honours' Good Friend, was signed Louis Taillefert. In fulfillment of Your Right Honourable's esteemed written order, the undersigned proceeded to the durbar to the city governor Lord Alinawaschan, and after having greeted His Excellency on behalf of Your Right Honourable and inquired after his well-being, made known to him according to the aforesaid in earnest but polite terms: That we, being specially ordered by the Right Honourable Lords of the High Government of the Dutch Indies to make known to His Honour and the other Surat regents: That the Dutch Company, not being accustomed anywhere in the Indies to manage in such a cramped and humble manner in dilapidated and mutually scattered dwellings, thatched warehouses, and erected sheds, but on the contrary, where they were firmly established for trade, were permitted without the least hindrance or difficulty to construct such buildings or dwellings as they need for the preservation of their merchandise and further operations, alongside housing of their servants; they had therefore resolved to devise the necessary measures to bring matters in Surat also to a reasonable footing, or to seek a good refuge and better establishment elsewhere where they can conduct their trade with more tranquility, satisfaction, and convenience, which will not be lacking for them hereabouts, and which will be the cause that they will be able to bid farewell to Surat forever; That we were accordingly ordered by the said High Government to request and summon His Honour and the other regents to give us a categorical answer whether they are inclined to grant written permission to construct on Jengie Bander the necessary warehouses, dwellings, and further outbuildings which they deem necessary for their trade and operations, enclosed in a ring wall and shut off from the intrusion of other people; as well as to let them possess and exercise quietly and peacefully the prerogatives granted by successive Kings, in order that Your Right Honourable may report the obtained answer to their High Honours with the first departing ship, so as to be able to take the necessary measures thereafter in their decisions as well as in sending or not sending merchandise, and to strengthen Your Right Honourable with their orders. His Honour, having had all this clearly presented to him and having listened to it attentively, was pleased to give us the following answer: That he was surprised that one came all at once to demand from him the decision on a matter of so much consequence, which he was not permitted or able to grant without special order from the court; that he undertook to write about it and communicate the answer to Your Right Honourable. Whereupon it was politely responded by the undersigned that this trouble to be taken was surely unnecessary, since that permission had already been granted to the Company more than 28 years ago, and for that purpose the land in Jengie Bander was granted to her

From Surat, dated 14 April 1758. bandar was permitted, and that if His Honour would only take this to heart, and no other request than his permission was needed, Their High Nobilities would certainly consider this statement as a polite refusal, because they are not inclined to let themselves be satisfied with fair-seeming words without effect or written commitments; upon this statement, the Lord Governor having spoken for some time in private with the Cadi or ecclesiastical judge who was present there, His Honour gave us as an answer: That if he allowed us the construction of the necessary dwellings, everyone would be displeased about it, and thereby certainly get into embroilments; whereupon it was replied by us in turn that one did not rightly understand the basis of the words "every one", and could much less comprehend how His Honour, if he complied with our reasonable request, would thereby get into any disputes, because nothing more was then being granted to us than what is permitted to Banians and other common merchants, who after all built lodgings and warehouses according to their pleasure, without His Honour having the least quarrel about it, at the same time expressing our further astonishment over the words "every one", because this did not square with the common saying of the inhabitants of this city, as His Honour could not be unaware, that the Dutch were the pillar of Surat. This statement having been heard by the Lord Governor with a smiling countenance, the same responded: Yes, Your Honours are the greatest champions of my city, and therefore I am obliged to help Your Honours in everything, and will therefore also simply explain clearly that it is the English whom I understand by the words "every one", and are the ones who prevent your request; but if the Honourable Company wants to conclude a contract to assist me against them and support me with their arms, then I shall give Your Honours permission for the construction of the necessary buildings; whereupon it was once again replied by us that this was outside our commission, but that one had perceived through the proposal of His Honour that the pretext of the appropriation of the buildings could well happen without the consent of the Court if His Honour would only take it to heart. Hereupon His Honour served that if one had concluded such a contract with him as has been said herebefore, he would then ensure at the Court that our request was granted. And whereas one could obtain no further answer from His Honour on this subject, although we insisted upon it several times in polite terms, but were continually answered with the statement concerning the concluding of a contract against the British, we took the liberty to make known to the Lord Governor that Your Right Honourable, as little as the High Indian Government, would be satisfied with this answer, but would consider it as an evasion and polite refusal, which was answered by that Lord by saying: I request that Your Honours inform the Honourable Lord Director of my statement; and while we saw that there was nothing further to accomplish or any other answer to be obtained, we requested our leave, which we obtained after first being sprinkled with the usual gift of betel and rosewater, without His Honour declaring himself any further on one thing or another. From Amboina the 24th May 1758. to maintain discourses with native chiefs, and has also sought to penetrate the intrinsic state, economy, and trade of the native population in those quarters; that truly nothing of any essential interest with regard to the Company's so very precious spice trade could be detected or discovered; whilst on the contrary it is generally asserted as a certain truth that neither nutmegs nor cloves of equal sort or potency with the true spice are still to be found growing on the whole of Ceram; and if it be that any trade therein should take place on Keffing or Rarakit, that the same would then undoubtedly have to be transported thither by clandestine routes out of the quarters of Banda and from here; concerning which, however, the undersigned would likewise believe that no strong presumption can be found, since truly little else has been revealed than a general proof of great poverty, savagery, and a most villainous society 61 Amboina the 24th May 1758. From society of all those peoples; mutually robbing each other of goods and people; murdering; or reciprocally selling those robbed and the like; so that one would believe that in no respect can much trade or any trusted intercourse take place among that rabble; and all the most principal that occurs there consists solely in the navigation of the Papuans, who mostly come over with slaves and some other trifles, in exchange for which they then barter the sago, a piece of linen, and other such wares, or else rob in one place and bring it to market again in another; whilst the Bandanese, in the retrieval of those slaves as well as the sago, salted and dried fish, and the like, frequenting this coast more than any other people, seem mostly to keep that trade alive through the barter of a piece of linen or with cash, as Your High Excellencies, if needed, might see this detailed 63 Amboina the 24th May 1750. in detail from the journal kept by the undersigned on the aforesaid voyage of his, to which he therefore takes the liberty to refer, both in this matter and regarding the visit already paid and what occurred at Rarakit, Keffing, and various other places in those quarters; not including herewith our very humble considerations explained in the two secret resolutions as to what might perhaps come into consideration regarding the placing of a fort on Pulau Gisser, whilst furthermore, by the dispatch of the brigantine De Ongehoorsaemheijt, the transport of 50 soldiers with their non-commissioned officers, having been the only vessel that could be spared here in the present loading of the ships, has also been communicated to the ministry at Banda, and their Excellencies' thoughts are now awaited, in order thereafter to direct everything further in such manner as may be found most advisable in common consultation. Macassar, the 5th of May 1758. To [illegible] from the proceedings of our meeting on the 11th of March of last year, since these dealt with no matters other than those to which the highly esteemed Resolution of Your Noble Excellencies of the 23rd of December 1756, drawn up for the compliance of this entire ministry, gave us occasion; and it is this alone which I submitted under the recommendation of secrecy to the Council for reading, and of which mention was made in my humble letter of the 2nd of May of the past year. Thus much, I beseech Your Noble Excellencies, to accept as sufficient for my discharge and to trust that with all attention Your most esteemed orders, both regarding the cruisers and the payment of the monthly wages just as is presently customary, as well as what has been prescribed concerning the management, will be promptly executed precisely according to the intention. Meanwhile, in response to the request of Your Noble Excellencies for adequate reasons as to how and when that quarter rix-dollar, which is deducted from the monthly wages of the servants, on what amounts it is taken, and for whose benefit it was introduced, serves in humble respect: that for many years past this was enjoyed by the shopkeepers on every month of advanced wages of the common military and sailors, because by this gift, or rather extortion, they were spared from the otherwise forced purchase of linens, which the soldier could scarcely resell for half the value. Successive shopkeepers have not been able to discontinue this, even though for some years no linens have been advanced on earned monthly wages, but they have collected the same until my arrival here, when, during the discussion of the memorandum of management and the subsequent examination of the monthly cash accounts, it did not appear to me that the two-thirds parts of what the cashiers or shopkeepers collected from the so-called good months were credited to the Company. I therefore brought this matter before the Political Council, where upon my proposal it was resolved to persist in the slightest modification of having that quarter for each month's wages, instead of 3 stuivers per rix-dollar, yet in such a manner that all lower and higher officers, as well as servants who draw their wages here, should miss an equal quarter of each month's wages, and that henceforth, according to the resolution below, two-thirds of it should be credited to the Company, and the remaining one-third part should be enjoyed by the cashier who makes the disbursement. Because of this deduction, which falls hardest upon the common folk, they showed themselves rather discontented during the revolt of 1756, and completely not without reason, seeing that those persons who earn from ƒ 7 to 9 per month must miss over 4 stuivers per rix-dollar, and that above or besides the 1/15th part or 3 1/5 stuivers of each real, which is credited to the Company as agio alone. Regarding the navigation and trade of the Macassars to and at Passir, I have the honor to inform Your Noble Excellencies that this is of no importance, at least entirely not frequent; and by the residents of this place likewise very little and only taken illicitly, because for some years no passes to Borneo have been granted here, their sea letters being for Cajeli or Mandhar, from where they cross directly over to Passir or Coti; which places, however, all these local peoples may navigate by virtue of the Treaty of Bongaise just as well as the whole of Borneo, as appears from the 9th article, where after it was previously stated that they might make their voyages to Borneo, with the exception of the east coast of this Celebes, it is expressed: "also not to the other side north or east of Borneo, towards Mindanao or the islands thereabouts." Which, according to their understanding and our reading, spoken under respectful correction, cannot be understood of the north or east coast of Borneo, and thus also not of Passir and Coti, but only with reference to the distant islands around those regions. Yet, as I have just respectfully said, the Macassars and Bugis of this place are for the most part unaccustomed to that navigation; I have also made it difficult for the daredevils who sail with passes for Mandhar and Cajeli by requiring them to post bail that they shall be permitted to call at no other places than those for which their passes are made out, and at the same time explicitly having them warned that, upon discovery of the contrary, they will have forfeited life and property. The indisposition of Boni's King, of which only one has recovered, has deprived me of the opportunity to confer with His Highness in this regard: while I can previously well assure Your Right Excellencies, whom I beg to pardon that I explain myself so respectfully yet so freely, that this monarch will by no means agree with pleasure to a prohibition so disadvantageous to his subjects: as I have several times conversed in private with His Highness concerning the extensive navigation of the Bugis, when the answer was always: where shall my people—understanding by this as well the Wadjorese residing in Kampong Bugis Macassar, 5 May 1758. From as the Bugis merchants residing there—seek their livelihood? We were formerly always permitted not only to sail to Passir, but also to Tambouco and into the Bay of Tominie, which is now all forbidden. The only thing that, according to my poor comprehension and under the most respectful correction of Your Right Excellencies' more prudent judgment, can be devised to obstruct this navigation and trade, is a cruising of the principal places themselves, and that during the west monsoon, along the east coast of Borneo from Pulo Laut up to the north side of that vast extended island, or indeed only around Passir and Koetei; which cruisers ought to seek to capture all vessels, but especially the most harmful ones arriving from the Strait of Malacca, not so much under the pretext of preventing the navigation to Passir, but rather because they sail without passes, which all the peoples of these lands without Macassar, 5 May 1758. distinction and however named are obliged, pursuant to the Boni Contract, to come and obtain at this Castle; while here, upon any emerging grievance, one could with the highest right dismiss the complainants according to the tenor of the Contracts: for although the Wadjorese since the last war have regarded and held the Company outside the alliance as an indifferent friend, nevertheless the Contract concluded with these peoples on 23 December 1670 and signed on 10 January 1671 is in true essence! But by them it is completely lapsed, indeed declared illusory; for this reason, as well as for the injury done to Boni in former times, these peoples have long merited a sensible correction: which could most easily be inflicted upon them by taking away their vessels and obstructing their trade both here and elsewhere; for to transport the Company's arms again into that remote and swampy land Macassar, 5 May 1758. From is by no means advisable. Meanwhile, I foresee that this brave nation, who currently consider themselves bound by no Contract, as soon as it becomes too hard for them, will summon all their subjects from here and elsewhere to their land, whereby first of all the Company's trade will come to a standstill; and that, taking it at the very worst, they will then join forces with their special friends, the no less courageous Macassars, perhaps to wage war against the Company. And thus, yea I may well say, not otherwise than through a war is there a chance to Macassar, 5 May Anno 1748. confine the trade of the Mandharese and Wadjorese more narrowly than has occurred hitherto, as well as to bring these, as well as the Macassar-minded Sumbawanese, to their duty, and at the same time to become master of the whole of Manggarai, which the Macassar grandees would for no money in the world dare to cede in these present times when the King is a child and the regent a covert enemy of the Company; the more so because these establishments are the only ones that the Macassars still possess outside the kingdom of Gowa, and from which the King enjoys an annual tribute. But notwithstanding this respectfully submitted view, I shall not fail to seize a good opportunity to sound out both the court of Boni concerning the one, and the Macassar grandees concerning the other recommended matter, and humbly inform Your Right Excellencies of the success of my endeavors thereafter. As furthermore herein, with the inclusion of a respectful report of how far I have already complied with the prescribed orders of Your Right Macassar, 5 May 1758. From contract and to declare, as well as seek to protect his person against the snares of his enemies; furthermore, in relation to this court, since my last humble advices, no substantive matters have occurred worthy of Your Excellencies' attention, the king and court grandees remaining to all outward appearances quite well-intentioned. However, the people of Soping have, without any prior notice, deposed their Datu, the brother of His Highness Boni, not without suspicion that the old gentleman, the King of Boni, has been active in this matter to have his son-in-law Mappa, otherwise named Arung Patudju, proclaimed King or Datu in Soping. As soon as His Highness Boni informed me of the deposition of his brother, and after it was demonstrated that no association between the latter and his grandees could help, I immediately advised him to annex that realm to himself again, so that Boni and Soping should not be separated from each other, and above all to take care that it did not fall under Wajo. His Highness replied to me that the burden of the Soping government would fall far too heavily upon him in his old age, and that he could not imagine that the Sopingese would lean toward the Wajo party. From That prince, having a few weeks ago sent some envoys inland to unite the Soping grandees if possible and to have Mappa elected as their Datu, who is staying in Soping with his brothers-in-law Datu Pammana and Datu Lamuru. From Maccassar, the 5th of May 1758. has been completely restored, the deposed Regent of Bonto Banga, Dain Fadoem, having gone to the King of Boni with my prior knowledge, keeping himself quiet and orderly. From the Southern Regencies there is nothing notable to report, except only that the subjects living there have properly paid their annual tribute; everything there as well as in Galisson and Pollembangkeen being in good peace, just as from Maros and the rest of the Northern Province I have nothing material to impart, except that the crops thus far stand very blessed and that I have deposed the Regent of Mangaloeng, for the reason that he, with his wife and children together with a large part of the subjects, merely upon the approach of Aroe Pantjanoa, took flight to the mountains; leaving that wanton youth there at Segeri to act as he pleased; while in his place, at the request of the subjects, also subject to the favorable approval of Your High Excellencies, I have renamed and appointed thereto a brave soldier by the name of Dain Manadjai, descending from the family of the regents of Mangaloeng. Concerning the cruising expeditions, I have the honor to inform Your High Excellencies that they departed from here with two Pantjallings in the beginning of March with the accompanying Instructions and regulations of the route to be taken by them. This being all the material matters which, pursuant to my bounden duty, I have deemed necessary to impart to Your High Excellencies: beseeching that you view these humble letters with that customary favorable eye toward me, wherewith Your High Excellencies were pleased to treat my actions in times past. Since my respectful last advices of the 3rd of this month, it dragged on until the 11th thereafter before I succeeded in getting the collective regents together at the post, whereupon, having called the same together, I proposed to them, as the time was already so far advanced and they should long since have been at Maccassar, and also that I had thus far not been able to obtain any proper certainty from the Regent of Bonto Banga as to when he would be in readiness to depart, and the majority of them complained that their provisions for the journey were running out through such a long stay at the post contrary to all customs, whether it would be advisable to fix the day of their departure for the following morning, being the 12th of this month, as I felt scrupulous about postponing this any longer. However, before doing so, to give notice of this decision through deputies to the Bonto Banga in order to see whether he might resolve to fix a day on which he would depart. The regents having collectively agreed to this, I accordingly sent deputies together with the interpreters to the Bonto Banga to give him notice of this decision and to ask for a fixed day, but received the answer that he could fix no day, but if the regents of Gantarang, Opa Opa, Lijolo, and Barang Barang would send to him at Mattalang with all their people and vessels, he would make haste to be ready within about five or six days, being assured that these were merely once again frivolous pretexts and the said regent

Whereupon he sent me the answer that it was well and I could do as I pleased, as he would not yet give any firm decision as to when he would depart. However, that same evening Daing Matiurie, brother of the said regent, came to me on behalf of his brother, requesting to postpone the departure of the regents for three days, as he gave firm assurance that he would be ready in that time, which I then also granted. Whence this sudden change came soon became apparent, as the next day the regent of Opa Opa came to inform me that he had heard from the Bonto Bango that he had resolved, since he saw no chance of avenging himself on his subjects here, to do so on the voyage and to attack and destroy under way their vessels in which they were to depart. This rumour was shortly thereafter also confirmed to me by the regent of Gantarang, who had heard it from the mouth of the Bonto Bango himself, as he, at the urgent request of the wife of the said Bonto Bango, had given permission to go to Mathallang, furthermore reporting that the said woman had requested him to be allowed to cross over with his vessel. The Bonto Bango had added thereto that if I did not compel the said subjects to go to Mattalang and submit to him, he had certainly resolved to execute this if he should meet them at sea. These dispositions of the Bonto Bango made me resolve to order the said subjects to take good care not to come into the sight of the fleet, leaving for their protection the sloop De Triton and the regent of Boekit, as I myself likewise made a difficulty of letting him sail with us in the fleet, because the Bonto Bango had declared that he would treat him just like his subjects, for the reason that his subjects had borrowed a vessel from this regent to transport their Company tribute. In this state of affairs, we finally set sail on the 16th of this month from the post and the Banto Bango from Matallang, and arrived here on the 20th. Since the 29th of August past, I have not been able to persuade him by any means or ways to come under the post, having appeared before me on that day for the last time in the company of Arol Pantjang, having a party of blunderbusses, muskets, and assegais go before him, and accompanied by more than a hundred Bugis, each time giving as reasons for his refusal that he was afraid and did not want to come. Regarding Boni, I humbly report on this prince and this court that the Makkadangetana, or regent of the realm, previously, and on the 12th June the king himself, repeated to my great astonishment his claim to the village and fields of Zeko, and continued to urge it quite strongly, although I clearly presented to the aforementioned prince our precise agreement and convention in this matter, namely to allocate to the Bonians who fled in anno 1749 as much arable land on Oedjong Lomo as they could plant; however, his highness—more than likely because the regent of the realm incited him to this—would hear nothing of it, and therefore, as well as to avoid putting his highness into a bad humor, I broke off that conversation at that time as short as possible, without making any change to the arrangement made, which was mentioned more fully in my humble report of the 18th October anno passato. It has appeared to me in various matters that his highness gives rather too much heed to the aforementioned Makkadangetana or regent of the realm, which has its origin in the blind zeal for the Mahomedan superstition in the king, who also holds Aroe Palacka—for the maintenance of the balance in future times—in too much From Maccassar the 28th October 1758 in too much honor, whereby that princess, through this as well as through her customary demonstrations of friendliness to the court grandees, comes very close to threatening the succession to the Bonian throne, for although Aroe Mampo is well regarded by the king, and so far as it appears to me, is esteemed by the majority of the Bonian court grandees and princes, their reverence for Aroe Palacka far excels above this, and indeed to such a degree that all the Bonian grandees from the greatest to the least, when speaking of her highness, acknowledge none other than their queen of Palacka. I have repeatedly had his highness of Boni urged to declare Aroe Mampoe as his successor, yet it appears to me that he is fearful of too great a jealousy among the princes, being—notwithstanding what was previously stated—still unable to notice that the aforementioned prince wavers in this matter regarding his given word. On the 6th July, when his highness came to speak with me in the Company's garden about the Soping affairs, that prince communicated From Maccassar the 20th October Anno 1758 communicated to me that he had taken the Goach Tomarilalang and privy councilor Caroeeng Tamasongo under his special protection, presenting that prince to me as such, with the request that the same might enjoy the same privilege on the Company's part, which request I provisionally granted pending further disposition by the council, and desired that the aforementioned prince state verbally, in the hearing of the present members of the political council, the reasons that prompted him to flee from Goach and seek protection with the Company and Boni, which he did after being seated according to his rank, in such manner as is reported in full under the section on Goach. With the arrival of this prince the king is wonderfully pleased, because his highness now thinks he has satisfaction for the detention of the fugitive Bonian Tomarilalang Aroe Oedjong in anno 1753. From Makassar, the 20th of October 1758 which was also to take place in such manner as had been ordered to them on the 10th of July in the presence of the Political Council, as mentioned at large in the attached separate resolutory note under that date. However, these envoys had barely traveled halfway when they were informed by the Soppengers coming from the interior that Aroe Patoadje, together with some Soppeng court dignitaries, had already passed by to come up hither and give notice of the election of a new Datu, and furthermore that the Mandarese had departed from Soppeng and returned to their country. This news was communicated to the King of Boni shortly thereafter, with the addition that the election had fallen upon Aroe Patoadje, and also that the envoys were returning hither; who then, as well as Aroe Patoadje and two Soppeng court dignitaries, as deputies from the others who had remained within Soppeng, arrived here successively, whereupon it was understood that the present King of Boni, Djalaluddin, had been chosen as Datu ri Soppeng. From Maccassar the 21st October 1758 will allow none of ours unless, as is customary, accompanied by a Banten interpreter or mantri, which, as I cannot yet know given the continued absence of the envoy of Banten, will be permitted this year or not, having heard nothing from there that I considered worthy of communicating to Your High Excellencies, most of the vessels that were sent thither from here having not yet arrived up to now. If, according to my wish, the repeatedly mentioned envoy should appear this month, I shall not fail to give Your High Excellencies a clear report of his commission; to which end I have already had a small vessel from Galissong prepared to forward the necessary advices to Your High Excellencies, either via Java or directly if practicable. From Maccassar under date 21st October 1758 Monday the 10th July A:o 1758 All present The Council being convened at the country residence of the Lord Governor, the King of Boni appeared at about 9 o'clock following granted access of the 8th of this month, who was ushered in by the grand battalion with the ordinary honours by the committee members the Honourable van Oosterhout and Voll, and received at the northern entrance by the Lord Governor himself, who led His Highness into the meeting hall and offered a seat at his left side, and following him the Datu Sideenring alongside the Tomilalang and other grandees, while the Council was seated on the right side of His Honourable Worship. The King having made known to the Lord Governor that he came expressly according to the agreement with His Honourable Worship on the 6th of this month to offer the Datu Sideenring alongside the First Tomilalang to depart as express envoys on behalf of the Honourable Company and Boni to Soping, From Maccassar under date 20th October 1758 requesting that they be given such orders as the Lord Governor and Council should consider appropriate for the best welfare of that realm. Whereupon the Lord Governor, turning to the Council, reminded them of the recent communications on the 10th March and 5th of this month concerning the disputes in the realm of Soping over the election of a king, and whereas it is utterly necessary for the Company as well as Boni that a well-intentioned prince and no stranger be chosen as king or Datu of Soping, His Honourable Worship declared that although these disputes were indeed internal, and therefore the Company, if everything took a regular course, would have nothing to do with this, His Honourable Worship nevertheless deemed it necessary for the interests of the Honourable Company, for the aforesaid reasons, to assist the King of Boni with good counsel toward the restoration of the lapsed peace within Soping; that during the last visit by Boni's king to His Honour in the Company's garden, he had discussed this with His Highness, and the Datu and minister now offered, who were now ready to depart thither, were appointed as executors thereof; and whereas upon the Lord Governor's inquiry to the King of Boni whether he had received any further tidings, His Highness answered no, His Honour proposed to instruct these envoys only to urge the Soping grandees among themselves in a friendly manner toward harmony in the name and on behalf of the Honourable Company and Boni, as being the two primary allies, so that they might promptly proceed to the election of a Datu who is legitimate and best disposed; and further that if the Pattoleija, head of the Madjoreesen, should wish to disturb the Soping freedom of that election by any force, to admonish him likewise in a friendly manner to desist therefrom, citing the Tallumpocco pact according to which everyone has complete freedom in such an election without the allies being permitted to interfere therein; and in short to promote Soping's welfare in this matter through gentle means to the best of their ability without committing any hostilities; and further that if the Sopingers or Madjoreesen should not wish to listen to our good counsel, the envoys must then truthfully report the state of affairs to us, so that we might subsequently take our further measures. Wherewith the members fully concurred. As also occurred upon the translations and questioning of the King of Boni, without His Highness having anything to add here; however, he simultaneously requested to be assisted with a portion of powder and lead, as Mappa according to his latest writing was very much in need of it; but the Lord Governor judged that since these envoys were instructed to promote peace and harmony, the import of ammunition into Soping would not be consistent therewith, on which grounds His Honourable Worship requested the King to postpone the sending of powder and lead until further news was obtained.
