37. From Maccassar under date 21 October 1758 and considered it necessary, in which his highness acquiesced. Furthermore, the governor communicated to the members of this council that the Tomirclalang of Goach, Caraleng Lamabang, had left his service at that court and sought other protection from Boni, and had likewise requested the same from the Honorable Company, as well as permission to settle with his family in Campong baroe. The reason that had caused the aforementioned Tomirilalang to take this step was that he had fallen into the disfavor of his brother, the regent Caraeeng zelle maat, because he had, though unwittingly, bound the wings of one of his messengers, and although he had contributed everything that an offender of his character could or might do, he had nevertheless been unable to obtain a pardon. Further, that his Honor had provisionally granted him, Iamasongo, permission to reside under the Company's protection in Campang molucco or baroe, Maccassar under date 21 October 1758 on the condition that he ensured our subjects suffered no nuisance from his people, and promised, together with the king of Boni, to look after his welfare by striving for an honorable reconciliation with his brother Zello, which conduct the council fully approved. Meanwhile, during the customary reception, the governor urged the envoys to conduct the execution of their commission properly and faithfully. Shortly thereafter, his highness requested and received permission to depart, who returned to boutualaca with the same escort as he had arrived, being saluted from the bastions of the Castle with nine heavy cannon shots. After prayers, his Honor communicated to the meeting that yesterday, on behalf of the king of Boni, by the Tomilalang aroe patoodjo and two nobles of Soping, a certain letter was handed over to him, written by the court nobles of Soping within Soping to the pabidjara and nobles of the realm residing here, being of the following content: Translation of a Buginese document written by the collective Nobles of the realm of Soping to the Pabidjara and fellow Nobles of the realm of Soping residing here. As the saying goes, he, aroe paneki, wants to retrieve the lamoen patoea Ritimoeroeng, as well as the death of oroe Joppa, being a son-in-law of aroe patila; on these two points he, aroe paneke, will seek to come into dispute with the Sopingers. For these cited reasons, the Datoeang of pamana cannot leave Soping, but will have his wife brought to pamana. I request therefore to assist us as quickly as possible with eight pikols of gunpowder and a proportion of lead for it, even should your Honor borrow the money for it, and upon your Honor's arrival we shall have the money collected and repay it. Macassar under date 21 October 1758 was ashamed of the actions of the Sopengers, conveying as much as that they renounced their election, so that it appeared to his Honourable Esteemed from the contents of this letter as if the Sopengers indeed wished to take refuge with Boni, yet with this hope that that prince would give them Aroe Patodjo as king; but be that matter so or otherwise, what was further stated in this letter regarding Aroe Paneki and his intentions gave no less cause for reflection; therefore, his Honourable Esteemed, after mature deliberation, could devise nothing better for the honour of the king and the welfare of the land than to admonish his highness of Boni to disregard this letter as being obscure, and immediately to declare Aroe Patodjo to the Bonese and Sopeng court grandees as Soeloe Datoua, as being able to justify himself with the request of the Sopengers in the interior and the necessity of his presence there; furthermore, to have him depart immediately for Sopeng with as much force as possible, as it is of the utmost necessity that this take place before the arrival of Aroe Paneki; further to recommend to Aroe Patodjo regarding a further election Macassar under date 21 October 1758 to accept nothing concerning the election, but first to give notice to the king so that his highness might beforehand make a renunciation with honour. Furthermore, his Honourable Esteemed proposed to send the junior merchant and pay bookkeeper Jan Hendrik Voll with this commission to his highness, with urgent insistence to carry this into effect immediately, as otherwise it was to be feared that the fickleness of this nation upon the approach of Aroe Paneki would bring them under the Wadjorese. Whereupon, having deliberated, the members unanimously conformed to this proposal of his Honourable Esteemed, and it was likewise resolved, in case the king of Boni should require any gunpowder and lead, to deliver the same to his highness. From Batang, Kendal, Kaliwungu, and Semarang, above their contingents, also a large 1300 beams more, for which only Kendal has a reduction of 50 koyans of rice, as having a somewhat heavy burden, and the remaining 500 Spanish reals together more. I hope that this arrangement, going far above the recommended excess of 2000 beams, and the permitted increase in money being also considerably less, may meet with Your Right Honourables' satisfaction, all the more as I think the timber demands will be able to be met pro rata, and regarding the rice collection everything appears regulated and, outside of notable punishment from heaven, there is no fear of an inadequate collection. Demak, whose forests are depleted, we shall discuss with the regents at the New Year; an expedient for redress in the new forest will likely be found by some give and take, both in the distribution of people and monies. To the High Noble, Rigorous, and Right Honourable Lord, His Excellency Jacob Mossel, General of the Infantry in the service of the State of the United Netherlands, as well as on behalf of the same and the General East India Company, Governor-General, and the Noble Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies, etc. Right High Noble, Rigorous, and Right Honourable Lord and Lords, Having finally received a reply from Balemboeangang, I take the liberty to accompany this with a copy of the letter, annexed to a sort of declaration written in English and signed by the Englishmen from Bancoeloe who were recently there; to which reference is made concerning the Cheribon vessel, stating that it was plundered by pirates. It is certain that from that quarter much of that rabble loiters, but nevertheless it does not remove the suspicion that they, if not entirely, at least had a hand in it, as it occurred in the vicinity and virtually before the river, although the town lies a good hour and a half up the river. My emissaries were also shown the vessel, which lies in splinters on the beach. I have, however, de novo expressed my astonishment regarding these matters, and even if His Honour might not have known about it, he ought to investigate sincerely and plainly whether any of his people had been involved, whom I then requested to be sent to me, and that I still awaited emissaries of name to settle this tedious matter at once. The embarrassment appears to be great on his part, and the situation will likely come to a closer understanding, or at least he will certainly take care in the future. Besides that, reprisals at sea are quite easy to take; one could also seize vessels coming from there in retaliation, with which I do not think Gusti Agong, as patron, would interfere, which moreover would be very easy to sound out beforehand. An invasion would solely serve to chastise them somewhat, for as to taking up a post there, I cannot perceive—although some speak grandly of it—that the Company's interest would be served by it. Pursuing them is also precluded by the wildernesses and mountains, caverns and cliffs; thus, to choose the certain over the uncertain, one could let this matter rest without prejudice to the Company's dignity, as things will likely come around, and I shall not lose sight of it, meanwhile continuing to remain active. Truly, High Noble Lords, our people are generally also somewhat brutish and often themselves to blame for what happens to them. And besides the Madurese, since they would provide some 3,000 men for it, it would cost the Company quite a sum again; for at least 200 Europeans and some 6,000 Natives would be needed if one wished to proceed with some security, which would be necessary.
