From Sumatra's West Coast the 22 December 1759. the rumor of Songijpagou has turned out to the contrary letters of the 20 October mention having been made of a certain spread rumor, conforming to the separate note written to the first undersigned from the Chinco chief Elias, that the little king of Adjerhadja upon his return from the mountains of Songijpagou had brought along several Sang Dupertuangs, or regional chiefs, in order to enter into a mutual agreement with the Adjerhadja resident Seijfferth, to the end that the Songijpagou people will henceforth trade nowhere else than at Adjerhadja, over which the Zillida Panglima already seemed to be so displeased that, upon receiving positive news, he intended to send 200 armed Malays to Cambang and Tampoenij to call the aforesaid Iang Dupertuangs to account over and regarding their broken contracts, to which they had bound themselves to the Company in earlier years together with the Sapoulou Bandahars, to deliver and trade their products nowhere other than at Chinco, but having since been further informed by the Chinco chief Elias and the Zillida Panglima that the little king of Adjerhadja upon his return from Songijpagou had indeed had some retinue of common Songijpagou people with him, but no emissaries or regional chiefs of that negorij, whereby this rumor came to arise, and thus having had some precipitancy in this, we most humbly request Your High Nobles' excuse in this regard, as we have by no means intended hereby to accuse the Adjerhadja resident Seijfferth wrongfully to Your High Nobles, but only wished to demonstrate early on how the native in the south is already displeased over the ongoing correspondence of the said Seijfferth with the Sapoulou

Instance for four lasts of wheat. with the Soengei Pagoenezen, of which the inland cloth and Illidase empire has from olden times been the principal territory, and for which reason the first signatory insists once again that, since his present confirmation as Commander of this Coast, the general management of native affairs may also be specifically entrusted to him, in order to prevent the harmful consequences that might otherwise easily arise in time on account of the resident's own caprices and arbitrariness. And since we have been informed by the English ministers of Bencoolen that, following our repeated claims, they have already been so good as to send the quartermaster Jan Keijser, murderer of his commander Albertus Bosch, under arrest to Your Right Excellencies for judicature, and having also received private news from various quarters that he had already been brought under detention over there, we could not fail to present to Your Right Excellencies, in a separate bundle, the copies of his trial papers already drawn up and put in forma probanti, so that, for the furtherance of justice, he may receive his well-deserved punishment as soon as possible according to the sentence we have already passed. Sumatra's West Coast 22 January 1760 remain behind and therefore is held. - to be able to send to Your High Honours in time, but in which regard we are now deprived, because the trade books the trade bookkeeper Coenraad Meertensz, having been notified by us upon Your High Honours' esteemed orders that he was to depart for Batavia with cancelled salary, since that time his head has become unhinged, and thus we have been unable to get any work out of his hands, whereby the trade books and the further related matters have fallen completely into arrears, notwithstanding that we have had the bookkeeper Herman Ludewich van Chinco come here as his replacement, who (it is true) is fully capable of this work, but because of his continual sickly spleen complaint and the arrears of the work is impossibly able to take over those books in the state they are currently in arrears, on account of which we, upon the complaints and insistence of the aforementioned administrators, have been persuaded to retain the aforementioned Meertensz until the next or second dispatch in order to balance his work as soon as possible, under our serious and final warning that, in case he should not have his work in readiness by our next sailing, we will send him away as a sailor to await the further disposition of Your High Honours; upon which threat he has now zealously begun his work again, with the promise to have the work done by the next dispatch under penalty of deportation. And although he doubly deserved our sensible correction for this bad conduct maintained by him for some time now, this would nevertheless not have brought him to repent, but on the contrary sometimes made him change to worse and poorer paths in conduct, besides and except it coming into our consideration that we previously had not the slightest reason for complaints about his work prior to his summons with cancelled salary, he being as capable a man in trade bookkeeping as the Company has ever had of his calibre, which is also the reason that one must have somewhat more compassion with him than with some other useless subjects, in accordance with our Lords Masters' successive orders not to deal too harshly with capable servants of the pen, such as bookkeepers and other scribes, at the first instance concerning their committed faults (properly understood, if these are not too gross), but rather to choose the gentlest way, which we have accordingly granted him; the more so when we take into consideration that it is very easy, without much trouble, to ruin someone who is capable for his service, but then to raise him up again or to get another such capable man in return is very rare; thus the Company loses a capable servant for a work that precisely is not everyone's own or expertise, in hope and prayer that this may merit Your High Honours' approval and confirmation, as we have been forced to this in order not to hold up the Company's books any longer, under our true assurance that we will let him depart for your parts upon the next opportunity and keep in his place the presently sick bookkeeper Harmen Ludewich, as a separate bookkeeper is absolutely necessary for the trade work, and therefore we very humbly request to be allowed once and for all to retain a capable man for that purpose, as the administrators have enough to do with trade and keeping the memorandum alone. A parcel was made of 12 pieces of Guineas, 10 pieces of Salempores, and 2 pieces of blankets for one lot, about which bargaining was conducted to pay 4 1/32 rixdollars, agreed upon, so that according to the statement they will still yield 29 3/4 percent.
