In order that, through this, the unbearable attitude and completely loveless conduct of Domine Steutel committed against me might become all the clearer to your Right Honorable Sir and Gentlemen—committed, I say, against me as his colleague, notwithstanding which I am in his Honor's eyes a traitor and a man forgetful of honor, and was already declared on 3 July unworthy of his Honor's holy ministry; yet on 8 August, a Reverend Gentleman and colleague of his Honor would, on the basis of a syllogism and final argument, be able to draw a very unpleasant conclusion for Domine Steutel; but I shall pass over this and more other matters in silence. Just as I will also make no mention of the unreasonable and foolish conduct committed by his Honor regarding my highly esteemed colleague Willem Wilbers, according to the Resolution of 14 June 1757, in order, if it had been possible—had the church meeting of that time not anticipated Domine Steutel's intention early on—if not entirely to banish his Honor from the church, at least to make him suspect and rob him of his good name. I shall also not speak of the numerous offenses caused to Domine Meynichus, now already in eternity, to which the distressed widow, still among us, can serve as a witness. I shall not bring up the baptisms, marriages, excommunications, and other particular cases, since all of this is sufficiently known to your Right Honorable Sir and Gentlemen, and for that reason I also pass over it in silence. Yet, Right Honorable Sir and Gentlemen, the conduct of Domine Steutel committed against me has reached the ultimate peak. The necessity is laid upon me to speak for my innocence and guiltlessness; for although the testimony of my conscience might well be enough for me—a conscience that I value more than that of a thousand witnesses, although I am assured that the witness of my innocence and guiltlessness lives in heaven, and also the whole congregation is convinced of this, and that unfounded slanders and accusations do not harm the conscience of the one who is accused—nevertheless, in such cases as have been committed against me, to rely solely on one's good conscience and neglect one's good name, how could this be regarded as anything other than a conceited carelessness and a cruelty toward myself and others? Now if this is true, and I am held to be a man forgetful of honor for no other reason, as becomes clearer than light to your Right Honorable Sir and Gentlemen from the above-mentioned, it follows naturally that this occurred for no other reason than that I have spoken the truth. What fruits could I expect from my ministry, what blessing upon my labor, if these slanders could hold ground? When, then, the honor of God and our ministry is violated and injured, when the fruit of our calling would be diminished; Then I leave it to your Right Honorable Sir and Gentlemen to consider how soul-grieving this slander must be to me. Batavia From Makassar, the 20th of October 1760. knowledge, wherefore also the outgoing Praeses will have to consider himself obligated to always, at the conclusion of his monthly session, deliver the aforementioned resolution book, along with everything that relates thereto or to any of the ecclesiastical matters, under To His Excellency the High and Noble, Right Honorable Lord Jacob Mossel, General of the Infantry in the service of the state of the United Netherlands, and on behalf of the same and the General Chartered East India Company, Governor-General, together with the Noble Gentlemen Councillors of the Netherlands Indies. Before I, according to custom, render to Your High Nobilities my dutiful report of what has occurred along this coast regarding indigenous affairs since the dispatch of our last submissive letters of the 3rd of May of the past year, I shall have the honor to impart that shortly after the receipt of Your High Nobilities' revered missive of the 19th of March preceding, which was first delivered to me in original together with the appendices belonging thereto upon the arrival of the Bonian envoy Arou Timoedjong on the 11th of June thereafter, I lodged a private complaint with the King of Boni regarding the bad conduct of that embassy, both concerning the theft committed and the transportation of slaves to Batavia; requesting not only that through his authority the one and the other might be restituted, but also for proper satisfaction. However, His Majesty at first seemed unable or unwilling to believe this; yet having found upon further investigation that the said accusation was well-founded, this affair was handed over for settlement to the Bonian grandees of the realm, inasmuch as the aforementioned envoy having been chosen by them, they also had to answer for his good behavior. After much deliberation, further investigation, and obtained proofs, they pronounced the sentence that the said Arou Timoedjong should be deposed from his dignity and condemned to the payment of the stolen goods and the restitution of the stolen slaves. But while these deliberations were pending, the guilty party, noticing that the verdict would not turn out in his favor, took flight without anyone being able to discover whither he had gone, as the King informed me shortly thereafter. I nevertheless kept that matter alive from time to time, until His Majesty told me at Maros that he had received firm news that the said envoy was staying at the court in Sumbawa, and therefore His Majesty intended to have him demanded back by an emissary; requesting at the same time that the latter might be given a letter from me in order to give this more force. This having been approved by me, and a letter to the regent and court grandees there having been prepared, that emissary departed, in the hope that he will successfully accomplish his mission. In that case, I flatter myself that I shall obtain some measure of satisfaction, whereas otherwise I see little chance for it, notwithstanding that the King of Boni told me that the realm of Boni would be charged with the compensation of everything, and for that reason orders had already been given to seize whatever could be found belonging to the often-mentioned Arou Timoedjong. For everything further that has occurred in this matter, I refer with favorable interpretation to the copy of the secret daily register, where such is noted at length under the dates of the 21st of May, 3rd, 10th, 11th, 17th, 19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd of June, 3rd of July, and 13th of August. This being all that I have been able to accomplish in this matter, for I was apprehensive that if I acted with more pressure, I would thereby put the King in a bad humor, the more so because it does not directly concern the interests of the Company, which they know very well how to distinguish from private matters. I hope my conduct in this will merit Your High Nobilities' approval, while in the meantime I shall keep a watchful eye on the freed slave of the late Right Honorable Lord Gollenesse of blessed memory, who is very much in His Majesty's good graces, and whom he recently appointed as his assistant interpreter instead of Montoe. And now proceeding further with respect to what has occurred during the last six months, I shall make a beginning with the realm of Boni, whose King, still constantly eager to wage war against the Wadjos with the help of the Honorable Company, upon his arrival on the 26th of June of the past year, through a wrong interpretation of Your High Nobilities' respected letter to His Highness, pretending that I was thereby fully qualified to begin the war, wished forcefully to insist that this should be undertaken as soon as possible. From Maccassar, 20 October From Maccassar, 20 October 1769 clearly dictated that I should exert all my powers to the end that this might have a desired outcome; yet even so, none of it was of any avail; therefore, after much debating back and forth, clearly seeing that in this matter I could not dissuade His Majesty from his unfounded contention, I was compelled, merely to gain time, to propose to him that he write a short letter about this affair to the former Governor, Roelof Blok, which had such an effect that I got His Majesty to calm down a little; yet it did not remove the impression that I held plein pouvoir in this matter from Your Right Honourables; for a few days after this occurrence, the second Tommilalang paid an express visit to the Senior Merchant De Lopes to inquire further into it, just as all of this is noted in detail in the secret journal dated 26 and 30 June as well as 2 July, to which I also respectfully refer. Meanwhile, it is certain that all these commotions raised by the King of Boni are primarily aimed at maintaining his wavering credit among the Bonians; as he well knows that his arrival in the interior would be followed by his death or dethronement, since the discontent begins to increase from day to day, to which the pardoning, contrary to the laws of the land, of his beloved son Arou Thaa contributes in no small measure, as does the great power which the latter holds in his hands, by virtue of which many improper deeds are done, which the old man condones as if turning a blind eye; this latter circumstance is also the principal moving cause why Arou Mampoe and several other grandees remain in the interior; and it is certain that the fear of the Company's power alone restrains the Bonians from providing the throne with another, which would entirely not serve the Company's interest; all of which the King knows full well, so it is not to be feared that he will ever withdraw himself from that protection, just as it is also (under correction) for those reasons most advantageous that he be maintained with force in all matters. For the rest, to conclude this matter, I shall only respectfully add here that I considered the expedient of writing to Mr Blok all the more useful because Your Right Honourables might thereby be better informed by His Honour in person than I should be able to do with a lengthy description, wherefore I also flatter myself that the same will meet with Your Right Honourables' approval. The ordinary puasa gift to the value of ƒ107. 16.— and another to the amount of ƒ82. 8.—, on the occasion that this prince was congratulated on his daughter, who is married to the Soeledato of Soping, having been brought to bed, were presented to that prince by the customary deputies and gratefully accepted. Furthermore, the King, in accordance with his previously made promise, has sent a mission to Baneratta in order, if possible, to apprehend the Ceramese spice smugglers and bring them hither; the outcome of which I await with longing, in the hope of being able to report a happy success to Your Right Honourables. From Maccassar, 20 October 1760. constantly keeps working to become datoua, as is dictated by a further letter sent to me by the king on 19 July, a copy of which is included among the annexes to this; wherefore I advised His Majesty, who according to custom was once again troubled thereby, that since it now appeared clearly enough that affairs in the inland regions were not in such a bad state and that all the commotion made about it arose in order to achieve this objective, His Majesty above all should send no gunpowder, lead, or any ammunition of war, in order to give them no means in hand in the interior for the execution of their evil designs, and for the rest to dissimulate and await better times; all of which the king approved, and since then little more has been heard from those quarters, except that recently, or on the 12th of the last weeks of the month of September, that prince informed me he had received news that all was at peace in the inland regions; so that I live in hope that the difficulties formerly feared with reason will have no further consequences, unless the king himself, according to his custom, again brings about one thing or another that might give cause for trouble, against which I shall nevertheless try to provide as much as is in my power. Furthermore, with favorable interpretation, I shall proceed to the court of Goach, from which on 28 May I received a rather substantial embassy, consisting of the Tommilalang and all the grandees of the realm, and some from the Tallo court, having principally the aim to direct matters thither, if possible, that those two realms be considered as one, and thus the separate contract concluded with the last-mentioned court in the year 1668 should fall into oblivion; but I showed their honors in broad terms that all their efforts in that regard were in vain, and I had no inclination to depart therefrom, but would strictly insist that the contracts be kept holy and inviolate, out of the conviction that peace, quiet, and good harmony principally depended thereon; as is further noted in detail in the daily register of that date; wherefore, seeing that they would not succeed, they departed somewhat confused and embarrassed. Yet I flatter myself that everything in this will turn out well once Crain Tamasongo is really entrusted with the last-mentioned office, as according to all appearances is about to happen, with the return of the king of Boni, who has already handed him over upon the repeated requests of the Macassars and even brought him in person to Goach, but took him along again into his company to Maros, as is extensively noted in the daily register under the dates of 14, 27, and 30 July, as well as 16 September, to which, so as not to be too lengthy, I humbly refer. Crain Mandjennang, accompanied by Crain Parangi, paid me a visit shortly after the departure of Mr. Blok, ostensibly with the intention of restoring friendship, as he has lost a great support since the death of the king of Tello and has become quite pliable. Therefore I received and entertained him kindly, but some time later he sent a request to me for an interpreter, in order to make a division in his presence of certain lands on Sampon Jawa, over which he was in dispute with the Macassars. And I having refused him this, adding that it was not known to me whether he or the Macassars possessed any land in that place, but rather that it belonged to the Company and had only been granted to them for use and until further notice, it seems that this has caused some coolness. However, it was deemed necessary to pay him this compliment, as the granting of such requests brings bad consequences. Regarding Maros, where the Pangerang poetar maintains himself with the planting of paddy and lives quietly, there is also nothing to say, except that instead of the deceased regent at Mandellij, upon the favorable approbation of your High Noble Lordships, his son Lapanannang has been appointed as his successor, being the most legitimate heir thereto; the Southern regents have properly delivered their ordinary tribute, and in the remaining Company lands such as Galisson and in the Poelembank district, as far as is known to me, all is likewise in peace and quiet; and therefore I would make an end of the affairs concerning the native population, were it not that I deemed myself obliged still humbly to inform your High Noble Lordships that on the 15th of the recently past month of July, the Malay Captain came to me, recounting that a certain Intje Sabouton, who had for a long time secretly stayed with some evil fellows on the island of Satando, a few days ago had in a sinister manner overwhelmed a certain vessel with some slaves arriving there from Boneratte, and had murdered some of the people, and made slaves of and sold the rest, but that one of them had managed to escape and inform the King of Bonij thereof, who then gave notice thereof to a Captain and ordered him to instruct me concerning this. This content of the said letter having been considered by the undersigned, and reflecting from this according to his humble thoughts that if this means could be carried out, the Honourable Company would thereby not only be given the opportunity to punish the Jambi ruler for his ill treatment, but thereby place the Company into a complete possession of Jambi.
