The Appearers hereby ending their given declaration, which they attested to contain the pure and upright truth, for which reason they remained ready at all times of necessity and when required to further confirm the same by solemn oath. To the Honorable, Most Worshipful Sir Jan Trabbe Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate, together with the Council Honorable, Most Worshipful Commanding Sir and Esteemed Councilors The undersigned Head Surgeon, having been handed the extract of the Gentlemen Directors' Demand dated Middelburg the 9th of October Anno 1760, which was received here on the 24th of October 1761, comprising mainly, respectfully submitted, solely the high price here, which Their Right Honorable Worships think differs too much from that of Muscat, or even, as Their Right Honorable Worships demonstrate, is in purchase nearly two capitals higher than in the last-mentioned place; Hereupon the undersigned will, in all reverence and according to truth, firstly argue: That Gum Myrrh is an article here that must be obtained from the third and fourth hand, not to mention the monopoly that is enforced over there in Mocha (from where one obtains that gum), for the reports of all the merchants who have returned from there unanimously state that one finds only one merchant there to whom the same must be sold, and from whom one must also buy it back at such prices as he himself in his discretion sets upon it. Your Honorable Worships are only too well aware that Muscat is the place where the same is produced or from where it is transported to Mocha, and therefore, if one wishes to have the same here, it must be purchased in the aforementioned manner. These, Honorable, Most Worshipful Sir and Esteemed Councilors, are in my opinion sufficient reasons that militate for the high price here, adding only for specification that last year I even bid Rupees 98:-:- or ƒ 147:-:- for the 100 lb and still could not even obtain those goods, over and besides that in the year 1757, ƒ 19:-:- per hundredweight and more had to be paid for that gum than recently, or in the intervening years that the undersigned procured the same. That Their Right Honorable Worships have also been pleased to remark that the aforementioned gum sent from here was brown and encrusted, and also small and gravelly, he has, under correction of wiser judgment, the honor to state in all reverence that the same was nevertheless pure and not, as one often experiences here, mixed with sand and small stones. J: van Kinken G: Clercq Bosse For verification Swijndrecht read To the Honorable, Most Worshipful Sir Jan Trabbe Director and Commander-in-Chief of this Directorate, together with the Council Honorable, Most Worshipful Commanding Sir and Esteemed Councilors In order to comply with Their Right Honors' esteemed requisition contained in Their said Honors' very revered letter of the 20th of August of this year, the undersigned serves to report that, regarding the write-off to the debit of the Profit Account in the books of Anno 1759/60 of 351¾ lb of Pepper and 205 lb of Bar Copper upon a report submitted by me which was inserted into the Resolution of the 31st of January of this year, the Honorable Company was not disadvantaged, nor was anything written off in excess of what the original survey dictates, an extract of which is annexed hereto, and which I also have the honor further to demonstrate to Your Honorable Worships below, namely: According to the survey, there is a shortfall on Japanese Copper in bars of 205 lb, or 1/8 per cent, and according to the books nothing more has been written off than the aforementioned quantity, which was done pursuant to the General Regulation on write-offs of the 15th of August 1752, but by mistake this was omitted under the date of the 9th of April, and by Resolution of that date it was also incorrectly made known to have the Warehouse Keeper Sweers, among other things, reimburse for 15 lb of that mineral upon purchase instead of having the cited 205 lb written off to the Profit Account and validating the same for him; but upon drawing up the warrant, that administrator was charged for reimbursement with no more than 64 7/8 lb of Japanese Copper in sheets, 241 lb of Dutch Lead, 233¾ lb of Pepper, and 1511 lb of Powdered Sugar, and nothing more, as the same can be further inspected on page 129 of the Journal of the said financial year. On the Pepper, according to the survey, there was a shortfall of . . . . lb 585½ Of which the said Warehouse Keeper has reimbursed, see cited page of the Journal - - - - - - - - - lbs 233¾ And upon my request made in the aforementioned report, pursuant to page 164 of that Journal, written off to the debit of the Profit Account - - - - 351¾ Makes as above - - - - 585½ What has caused this erroneous handling, the undersigned can report nothing certain to Your Honorable Worships, except that he must confess that the 205 lb of Copper and 351¾ lb of Pepper ought to have been written off in the books under the 9th of April according to the contents of the cited General Regulation and the survey; but since, as stated, the Honorable Company was not disadvantaged by this procedure, he hopes that these errors will be favorably forgiven him by Their Right Honors.
