I have the honour to let this serve to accompany the two last timber rafts consisting of 210 pieces of beams, long 24 to 25 feet, thick 7 to 8 inches 300 ditto 20 to 21 ditto 7 to 8 ditto 600 ditto 17 to 18 ditto 7 to 8 ditto 208 locking and edge planks. amounting together with the expenses thereof according to the invoice enclosed herewith to a sum of 3323 guilders, 11 stivers, 8 pence. To which is attached a copy invoice of the powdered sugar recently shipped on the ship Keukenhoff. Towards the end of the past month died without leaving a will or effects, the sailor Harman Tijle of Valkenburg. From Cheribon, 9 January 1765 From Cheribon, 9 January 1765 Having found myself honoured with Your High Noble and Right Honourable's venerated letter of the 18th and 21st December last, the first-mentioned to accompany two lasts of Cape wheat, which were duly received, this serves as a dutiful reply to the last-mentioned, assuring Your High Mightinesses once more that I shall constantly make every effort to reduce the expenses, the more so as the profit account henceforth will show a modest appearance and will practically consist solely of the revenues, since Your High Mightinesses have been pleased to relieve this office of the iron and cloth trade, and for which the Chinese officers and traders respectfully offer Your High Noble and Right Honourable their gratitude, having now hope of in time getting out of debt and seeing the colony flourish. Your High Noble and Right Honourable being pleased to mention that the rice purchases should only proceed as far as possible, without prejudice, however, to the obligation of the Princes, I take the liberty to respectfully remark on this that since the year 1759 no purchase of that grain has taken place, because Your High Mightinesses were pleased to pay no more than 16 rixdollars for it, as to the Princes. And the same are to be obtained at Indramayu for no less than 20 rixdollars, excluding 2 rixdollars for export to the farmer, just as was always charged previously, whereas here the very least to purchase is at 25 rixdollars the koyan, having now no more than 30 koyans from the warehouse, it being impossible to purchase on account of the Princes from the Chinese traders, Memorandum, for the charging of the 2000 rixdollars or 4800 guilders, which must be paid yearly by the Prakanmuntjang regent to the tumanggung of Bandung and Raden Rangga. A list of the vessels arrived here in the past year 1764 from the Capital, likewise their cargo. A copy of the resolution taken with the Princes, together with its annexes, requesting Your High Noble and Right Honourable for the usual annual gifts for them. Highnesses, On the 27th of the previous month, the soldier Johannes Edelkamp of Berkelinghausen passed away without leaving a will or estate, with which I take the liberty to call myself with the deepest respect, /below was written/ as before, /was signed/ P. C. Hasselaer. /in the margin:/ Cheribon, the 9th of January 1765. To the same as before. Having been honored with your Right Honorable and Highly Esteemed revered letter of the 19th of this month, original and duplicate, conveyed by the ship IJsselmonde, that vessel will be unloaded without delay and, as soon as wind and weather permit, sent to Indramajoe to take on a base layer of leaguer staves, pursuant to your Right Honorable and Highly Esteemed order by letter of the 9th of October, anno passato, and further to be fully laden with the coffee and pepper located there. Requesting your Right Honorable Lordships further for a ship to Indramajoe to collect the remaining staves and other small timber works. Furthermore, I have to present to your Right Honorable Lordships a copy of the resolution taken with the Princes on the 4th of this month, and pursuant to the same, a letter from their Highnesses tending to the request to be permitted to suffice this year with 200 heads of mud-Javanese. And one from the Sultans Anom and Suppoe, requesting your Right Honorable Lordships' decision regarding a certain dispute between Sultan Cheribon and the Panembahan over a Santana who crossed over from the first to the latter, as well as for a firm order in that regard for the future, everything to be seen more broadly in the aforementioned Resolution and Letters, to which I respectfully refer, having taken the liberty to add two considerations according to a carefully conducted investigation regarding the two-part request concerning the difference over the aforementioned Santanas, for the further elucidation of your Right Honorable Lordships. With which I take the liberty to call myself with the deepest respect, /below was written/ as before, /was signed/ P. C. Hasselaar, /in the margin:/ Cheribon, the 28th of February 1765. On the 20th of this month, the soldier Willem Moor of Walzegt passed away without leaving a will or estate. As well as a statement from the raft maker regarding that which went missing with the loss of the two latest timber rafts, requesting your Right Honorable Lordships' authorization to write off that which is not renewed here annually, namely: the iron grapnels, bolts, bars, coir ropes, and frame timbers. Also enclosed herewith is a duplicate balance sheet of the cash and products. Translation. 3. From Cheribon, the February 1765. From Cheribon, the February 1765. Translation of a Javanese letter written by the Sultans Anom and Suppoer of Cheribon to His Right Honorable Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra. After the usual preamble: Furthermore, the reason why we write this letter is because there is a dispute between the Sultan Cheribon and the Panembahan regarding Ratoe Soeriadiridja, being a Santana /or blood relative/ of the Sultan Cheribon, from whom she has betaken herself to the Panembahan, while retaining her houses, garden, and other lands that she had under her, which the Sultan Cheribon did not wish to allow. But the Panembahan says that it is fair that the Ratoe retains her lands, for the reason that it was given to her for perpetual maintenance and remembrance. It was on the 17th of December 1764 that we were assembled together, at which time the Panembahan submitted a document from Their Right Honorable Lordships from the year 1731 concerning a blood relative who had likewise changed allegiance and retained her lands under her possession; and because that document is an order from Their Right Honorable Lordships, we have therefore mutually agreed that the aforementioned Ratoe Soeriadiridja may indeed retain her lands, and that the Sultan Cheribon could have nothing against that. However, the Sultan Cheribon did not wish to consent to this, nor sign for it, after which we assembled again on Monday the 4th of February 1765, at which time the aforementioned Sultan made known that the princely blood relatives could indeed take their lands with them where they reside, but that one cannot take those lands that belonged under the services, such as the desas and negorijs, paddy lands; but such cannot happen. The reason why the Sultan made this known was because he had a resolution which had been signed by the Resident Jan Donker van der Hoop and the joint princes of Cheribon, which he delivered and which reads as the Sultan Cheribon had stated. Whereupon the Panembahan made known that in the aforementioned Resolution it was not forbidden that such persons might take their lands with them, and that it was true and certain that the Ratoe Said, at the time she placed herself under the Sultan Cheribon, also brought over all her lands that she held under her; and besides that, the Panembahan said, the lands of the aforementioned Ratoe Soeriadiridja over which we are in dispute, she inherited from her father and mother, and which lands those old people received for maintenance from the Sultan Suppoe Samsoedien before there ever was a Sultan Cheribon, and therefore she did not obtain those lands from Sultan Cheribon either; and, continued the Panembahan, there have surely been more of the blood relatives who crossed over in such a manner as Ratoe Soeriadiridja. From Cheribon, February 1765 From Cheribon, February 1765. could not reject the writing of Sultan Cheribon as well as that of the Panembahan, since we did not know whether the aforementioned papers were a perpetual order or not; and as far as we are concerned, we think that the paper of Sultan Cheribon, for the reason that it was signed by only two Sultans, cannot be held as a law, but that of the Panembahan is a resolution of Your Right Honourables, granted solely for the peace of the family members; and the Panembahan says, as aforesaid, that the said Ratu Said has retained not only the land on which she lives, but also the paddy fields and dessahs, whereupon we have seen in the aforementioned writing of the Panembahan that it mentions a piece of land; and since this appeared somewhat obscure to us, we could not pronounce judgment in that matter, and therefore we have left this to Your Right Honourables. For which reason we, Sultan Anom and Sultan Sepuh, take the liberty to send this letter to Your Right Honourables, with a very humble request that Your Right Honourables may kindly settle this matter for the best. At the same time, we request Your Right Honourables kindly to give us a perpetual order as to how we are to conduct ourselves in the case of desertion of blood relatives. We likewise request that, in the event we should give to our children or relatives anything, whether land or people, for their maintenance, we may grant to their members a deed on which our signet is affixed; and if today or tomorrow a dispute should arise over this, Furthermore, we have jointly understood from the Resident, Mr. Pieter Cornelis Hasselaar, that Your Right Honourables have been pleased to order us to send over more laborers for dredging the river. The ship Osdorp will be fully loaded with small timbers with all possible speed, this serving to accompany the vessel IJsselmonde, which at Indramayu has taken in: 6553 piculs of coffee beans in 10734 double straw sacks, 149 piculs of black pepper in 295 double straw sacks, 87 bales of cotton yarn of various sorts, namely: 2 bales Letter A, extra fine, 2 bales Letter A, ordinary, 1st sort, 31 bales Letter B, 2nd sort, 11 bales Letter C, 3rd sort, and 2 bales Letter D, 4th sort, 3000 pieces of pipe staves, amounting together with the incidentals thereof, according to the accompanying invoice and bill of lading, to a sum of 97699 florins and 11 stuivers. Also enclosed herewith is an expense account for what was furnished for rations and refreshments to the crew of that vessel, amounting to 289 florins, 11 stuivers, and 8 pence, for the write-off of which I hereby request Your Right Honourable and Highly Esteemed favor. In the years 1758, 1759, and 1760, I had to exercise consideration, as during that time a severe mortality prevailed, which snatched away as many as 50,000 people in the lands of Cheribon, Gabang, Indramajoe, and the Preangers. Yet however much I, before this mortality as well as during the same, according to the circumstances of the time, and thereafter with redoubled zeal, applied my efforts and tried all imaginable gentle means, everything was nevertheless in vain. And considering that this results from the fact that the deliveries of the cotton yarns and indigo bring no profit to the native, but are considered by the Regents as lord's services, which they consequently have performed by the common man without any reward, or at least contribute nothing of importance for it, from which it follows, especially with this indolent nation, that they become tired and careless: thus I subsequently suggested to the High Government of the Indies, by letter of the 26th of September 1764, such a means to achieve the aforesaid objective, which I take the liberty of inserting herewith, reading verbatim as follows: Having several times reflected, in order to suggest means as Your Honors currently please to require, which could compel the Regents to deliver larger and better-quality quantities of indigo and yarn, there indeed occurred to me a fine of triple the value of that which they fulfill less than their usual delivery, namely, apart from any unexpected accidents of the seasons, but on the other hand taking into consideration that the principal reason for the meager and poor fulfillment of those desired items exists because the common man, who must cultivate and deliver it, receives if not completely nothing, certainly very little payment for it

15 From Cheribon, the 21st of August 1765 From Cheribon, the 21st of August 1765 obtained from it; but everything was appropriated by the Regent, which notoriously must make the subject discouraged and careless in cultivating products that yield him no profit, and thus, since the essential evil remains, neither a monetary fine nor a price increase will bring about any effect; this is all the more evident because not one of the other Residents has, by far, paid out the full payment of the Company's rice to them as I have done from the very beginning, without however observing the least improvement; thus I know of no other means of coercion than that which Your Right Honorable Great Worships have already been pleased to establish as an example for the Ingabeij of Indramajoe, namely the dismissal of the negligent Regents; since this will certainly instill in them a just fear, and thus compel them to satisfy the common man, and to attend to the orders and deliveries. To that end, I have most forcefully written down Your Right Honors' further recommendations to all the Regents collectively, adding the dismissal of the Regent of Indramajoe, so that it may serve as an example and a deterrent to them. Meanwhile, the improvement has succeeded to the extent that I hope the returns of the past and this year, both with regard to the cotton yarns and the indigo, will be found to be of the required quality and virtue, and will give satisfaction. I have not perceived any signs of alienation of the native's sentiments from the Company during my stay. There have indeed been disputes agitated between the princes among themselves, arising from their mutual jealousies; but the respect for the Company still prevails to such an extent that upon the intervention of the mere orders of Their Right Honors the High Indian Government, the said disputes ceased immediately. I respectfully believe that I entirely did not deserve this tender displeasure; for instead of sullying myself with extortions and mistreatments, I have given the Regents what was due to them, which can also be seen from the letter inserted herebefore to the High Indian Government regarding the cotton yarns and indigo. And what is more, in order to relieve the Regents in their oppressive deliveries, I advanced them money without interest, and applied all diligence to make myself beloved by the native, both through friendly treatment and demonstrations of affection, and by contributing everything I could devise for the relief and well-being of the Regents, the common folk, and the country. And how I have succeeded in my objective can be gathered, besides other evidence, from the fact that when I communicated my promotion to Extraordinary Councilor of the Dutch Indies to the Princes of this realm through deputies, I was told, both by the said deputies and afterwards during the congratulation in Meanwhile, it appears to us that the sentiments of the native in this Residency have become quite somewhat alienated from the Company. And since this mostly arises from the extortions and mistreatments that are frequently inflicted upon the native, of which to our regret evidence has also been found in this Residency for many years, we recommend providing against this without the least connivance or consideration. The eleven iron and one metal cannon have been well received here, and the unserviceable ones will be shipped off again to Velsen. Regarding the engagement for a new contract for the military personnel, there are none here whose term has expired, except only the soldier Hendrik Coenen, who requested an advancement in the recent respectful letter of the 30th of the previous month. October 1765 Translation of Javanese letter written by the joint Princes of Cheribon, To Their High Noble the High Government at Batavia brought the 6 November 1765 After the usual introduction: Furthermore we make known to Your High Noble that we have well received their highly honored missive and therefrom understood that whereas the Mr. Pieter Cornelis Hasselaar was chosen as Councilor extraordinary of Netherlands India, and subsequently was to come over to Batavia, and that Your High Noble in his place had appointed anew the Senior Merchant and former Shahbandar of Batavia, Robbert Hendrik Armenault, with which we have been very well pleased and extremely rejoiced that the Noble Hasselaar has been chosen as Councilor of India; yet we cannot refrain from expressing our great grief and sorrow that the said Gentleman has been called away so prematurely from Cheribon to Batavia; the reason why this causes us extreme sorrow is because the said Noble Gentleman has always had great compassion for us and has always sought our and the Country's welfare, and whatever burdened the common man his Honor alleviated, and for that reason the common peoples are also extremely grieved that the Noble Hasselaar has departed from Cheribon; all that lies upon our heart is stated in this letter. Expressing to your High and Right Honourable my respectful thanks for the favorable consent to the request made concerning the taking over of the fixed assets by one resident from the other. The return of the mud Javanese, your High Honour's satisfaction in that regard, and the request for 300 men in the coming year, will be made known to their Highnesses as soon as the princes have returned from their upper villages. Ton Yskko, appointed as executor of estates, expresses hereby his humble gratitude to your High Honours, as does the promoted person. The necessary advertisement regarding the prohibition of the export of rice to places other than Batavia, Ambon, and Banda has already been made. Furthermore, I have the honour to present to your High and Right Honourable the answer to the findings on the trade books of the years 1762/3 and 1763/4. The 33 metal swivel-guns mentioned in your High Honours' esteemed missive are all on the vessels serving as convoy and cruisers against the pirates; therefore, I take the liberty to request to retain them for that purpose, for which they were requisitioned in the year 1759. The crop of areca nut has turned out so poorly this year due to the late, persistent rains in the good monsoon that there is little prospect of any collection; however, everything that can be obtained will be gathered together. The further orders mentioned in your High and Right Honourable missive and the extract resolutions enclosed therewith will be dutifully obeyed. Requesting your High Honour's favorable authorization for the write-off of an extraordinary 400 lb of gunpowder, which was fired at the introduction of the undersigned and the ceremony customary on that occasion for the princes, etc. Also for the customary annual presents for the princes. And for the persons requesting an improvement in their pay according to the enclosed list. Being sent herewith to your High and Right Honourable are two prisoners, as appears from the enclosed sentence and list of names. The orders contained therein regarding the pantjallangs will be carried out; the report of where the Johore vessels went that were seen at Lampong Toulang Bauwang will be forwarded upon receipt, and our error regarding the reporting of the vessel tonnages will be corrected in the future. The bark de Lieftallige not being provided with sufficient ballast to be able to depart safely therewith according to the report of the skipper Arij Fransz, which is transmitted herewith, we have approved by resolution based on that report—since ballast cannot be obtained here without great expense—to load it with 130 bahars of well-sifted black pepper, weighed out to the satisfaction of the said skipper, according to the accompanying invoice, the declaration of the commissioners, and the account between the Honourable Company and the King. There is also accompanying this a memorandum of such weights, currencies, and measures as were newly ordered to be reported by the extract resolution of Your Right Honourables dated the 16th of August 1764 and which are in use here, as well as a monthly cash balance of the month of December. For the dispatch of the necessities for this commandery, which were delivered by the officers of the said bark in accordance with its invoice alongside the packs of linens, we express our gratitude to Your Right Honourables and request that the goods still missing from the requisition and very necessary here may be fulfilled at the first occasion.
