From Bantam, the 15th of April, Anno 1765 From Bantam, the 28th of April 1765. Examined mentioned ships may be written off in our books. An expense account of a run-away slave named Jata of Bali, who on the 13th of February last, together with his confession, was already sent towards Batavia. A balance of our cash funds for the month of March, a receipt for the muster bag. Three petitions, the first from the administrator Van Campen, who requests to be allowed to make a short pleasure trip to the capital along with his wife; and the second from the assistant Zugel, who solicits Your High Nobilities to obtain his discharge upon the expiration of his contract; and the third from the skipper Claas Sluijver, containing a request that the 2 per cent allowance granted to him on behalf of the Company not be stated in the invoice, as he would then be unable to receive it at Batavia; thus we have, in hopes of Your High Nobilities' favorable interpretation and pursuant to the resolution taken today, based on that petition, granted the same; and Lastly, a packet of pay records. Wherewith we remain very humbly underneath was written, as before, was signed J. Beijnouts, J. van Campen, Js. Guns, J. Bagart, in the margin, Bantam in the fortress Speelwijk, the 15th of April 1765. To as before Yesterday evening I received by letter dated the 25th of this month tidings from Tjerita that on the island of Rakata, an island between 12 and 15 miles from Bantam where no pepper grows, six Javanese reportedly saw a proa with 40 pirate men, well supplied with powder, lead, firearms, and some swivel guns, which news was just now further confirmed by the Ngabehi of Tjerita by letter to the Regent here, namely with this difference, that four proas, one of which had been pulled onto the shore, were allegedly seen instead of one, and that when the Javanese asked them what they came there to do and how much longer they intended to stay there, they reportedly replied that they intended to stay there as long as they saw fit; since no vessel of ours is currently at hand, the government boat being bound for Lampong Tulang Bawang with cash, provisions, etc., I had the King requested, who also promised me that by the day after tomorrow, and not earlier, he will have ready 4 well-armed vessels of his, to which I intend to add, by way of reinforcement: 1 ensign 1 sergeant 2 corporals 20 soldiers, and 1 assistant surgeon together with 2 small cannon and further supplied with as much ammunition of war as shall be deemed necessary. I therefore have the honor to inform Your High Nobilities thereof, with the request to be further reinforced by your orders in this regard. High, Noble, Right Honorable, Wide-Ruling Lord and Honorable Gentlemen, The good Realm's Regent and Pangerang Coesoema Diningrat always complains whenever he comes to me about his continual indisposition, and the resulting increasingly weak physical constitution that has arisen from it. This is usually accompanied by the wish that Your Excellencies might be pleased to grant him an honorable discharge from his heavy service, provided with a small annual income. And although I have persuaded him several times to continue in his employment, he nevertheless made a request in this regard a few days ago in the most humble manner to the King, who promised him to inform Your Excellencies thereof, just as he has now communicated this to me in the name of the King. I asked him whether the King had already turned his thoughts to another capable person who could safely be appointed in his place. He said yes, and that it was the kiai Aria Soera Dilaga, and that this would be very pleasing to the King's blood relatives and Pangawas if this choice were approved by Your Excellencies, just as the King is to report in further detail with permission to Your Excellencies. After the preceding very reverent salutations and good wishes, this contains the following: Son Padoeka Siri Zulthan Aboel Natzar Mochamat Ariesse Dzeinoel Asie kien communicates that he comes to offer this letter to father, the Lord Governor-General Petrus Albertus van der Parra, together with the Councillors of India, for no other reason than the maintenance of the bond of mutual friendship and affection, and at the same time to request that the First Realm's Regent Kasoema Ningrat may favorably obtain his dismissal at his own urgent request on account of being incapable of that office due to continual illness. If father, the Lord Governor-General, and the Councillors of India approve this, son has nothing against it, under these conditions, however, that it be delayed for another eight months. Furthermore, son the Padoeka Siri Sultan requests, at the requisition of the aforementioned First Realm's Regent, that if what is requested is granted to him, father the Lord Governor-General and the Councillors of India may graciously grant him for his maintenance henceforth and for the duration of his life an amount of two hundred rixdollars annually. And since Your Excellencies, according to the statement of the Commander Johannes Reinouts, intend to appoint another in his aforementioned place, son the Padoeka Siri Sultan requests that Aria Soera Dilaga may be employed in that office, as he, in the judgment of son Padoeka Siri Sultan, his family, and realm's councillors, is the most fitting and suitable, and indeed also the most capable of carrying out everything to the satisfaction of the Honorable Company. Yet, notwithstanding what has been said, son the Padoeka Siri Sultan submits himself, wishing to carry out nothing without the prior approval and pleasure of father, the Lord Governor-General, and the Councillors of India, to whose wishes I am always inclined to be subject, since they hold the place of father to son Padoeka Siri Sultan.

Among the 39 are four headmen who, being each questioned separately, confess that they, with their four proas belonging to a certain Entje Cedulla and Captain Melayu residing at Macassar, were sent last year from Macassar by the said owners to the Balinese islands to catch trepang; but that through strong and continuous contrary winds and a lack of rice, after having struggled at sea for nearly 3 months, they had run before the wind to the island of Rakata, where they had been for circa 7 months and had worked there all that time alongside the natives for their food, intending, once the paddy was ripe and having properly provided themselves with it, to undertake the journey back to their fatherland. To the question of how many percent overweight skipper Claas Stuijver received his transported pepper here, we have the honour to reply: for 4 bags, truly weighing only 1.9 to 2 lb each, which may not weigh below 210 nor above 250 lb: lb 5:- for dust thereof: lb 5:- that which the king still concedes to prevent all disputes that might arise in weighing: 2:- thus from each weighing: lb 12:- The Company's gifts, on account of indisposition on the 21st of this month, were presented by the members of the Political Council to the monarch with the usual ceremony, and accepted by him with signs of high esteem and obligation. The Resident at Lampong Toelang Bauwang has informed us in his latest letter, received on the 4th of this month, regarding the Johorese pirates, that those rovers had disappeared to the west in the beginning of the month of November of the past year, without having been able to learn anything further in that regard; he also encloses herewith his forwarded letter and daily register for Your Right Honourable. Wherewith we remain very submissively, underneath: as before, signed J:s Beinouts, J:s Gans and J: Baijart, in the margin: Bantam in Speelwijk the 7th of June 1765. To the same as before. After I had respectfully directed my last humble letter of the 5th of November of the past year to Your Right Honourables, and therein informed of a general inspection and census of the pepper gardens, planters and trees in the district of Abronge, the commissioner appointed for that purpose, Pangerang Sura Bomi, returned on the 25th of December following with most all the nobility of that country, and brought the pleasant report, just and in such manner as the enclosed specific list will humbly show Your Right Honourables. The census of all those plantations mentioned therein was conducted in the presence of the corporal and four common soldiers whom I had sent along for that purpose; which number of three hundred sixty-two thousand five hundred trees within four years will have mostly attained their full growth of seven, and, life and health permitting without unforeseen accidents, are poised to give an increase in delivery of 1450 bahar of pepper per year. Now, I deemed the descent of all those grandees to be very necessary, as according to reports received, some of them had been disputing over the right of succession since the death of Pangerang Erria, in life the eldest and head regent of the settlement Cotta Bomi, as I had the fortune to inform Your Right Honourables respectfully in my humble letter of the 26th of August last past, and who are presently mostly united. Just as I also have had the fortune to settle and clear out of the way, with the consent of both sides, some of their old disputes and historical as well as mutual pretentions, attachments and whatever else there may be, which was highly necessary for the pepper cultivation and free navigation; yet regarding the succession on the king's part of those whose parents had been pangawers and had died, for which purpose also several of them came down, having considered their newly laid-out pepper plantations, which consisted mostly of young saplings and pepper vines, and consequently require great care, whereas it was most to be feared that in their absence this would have been lacking, wherefore I applied my efforts to divert them for the present from heading towards Bantam until their fields and pepper vines have overcome this, while in the meantime those who were provisionally known to us in the matters being solicited could attend to them there until the actual confirmation, which mostly pleased them, besides which the scarcity of the king's vessels will also compel those who still remain resolved to abandon their design. In the Sonkese district and the Baram creek, I intend, life and health permitting, to have an inspection conducted again soon, whereupon I shall not fail dutifully to bring the condition and findings of that region to Your Right Honourables' high notice. I also still expect this month that the head regent of the settlement Basaas, Pangerang Nata Dilaga, will bring down the Backoang people, but whether Aboebackar's eldest son, named Plimbang, will indeed be among that retinue, that regent has not dared to assure me. That the collection of pepper in the years 1761, 1762, and 1763 was less than in previous years, as is stated alongside here, the bad harvests are truly the cause of it, for the increase of which we nevertheless testify to apply everything that can possibly be practiced or devised, both by planting a great multitude of young pepper trees and preventing and checking the smuggling of it with good and strict orders given to the heads of the cruising pantjalangs and by keeping those vessels continuously in the fairway, as is done, and from all of which we dare with certainty to promise Your High Noble and Right Honorable Excellencies a desired outcome in the future. Having observed with regret how greatly the collection of pepper over the last three years has decreased in comparison with previous ones, and hardly being able to presume that this should have to be attributed solely to the bad crops, we are all the more strengthened by your considerations in that regard in our apprehension that the pepper is being smuggled away; and while the re-establishment of the small English trading posts along the inner coast of Sumatra and the far-reaching designs of that nation require a redoubled attention in order to thwart their plans, we not only approve of the erection of a small post at the river of Samanca as a token of the Company's lawful possession of the Lampongs, but also recommend the Commander to remain vigilant against that smuggling to the best of his ability, both by conducting the necessary patrols and otherwise. I had the fortune on the 6th of this month to receive an extract from Your High Nobles' very venerated missive of the 5th of July past, sent to me by the Honorable Lord Commander and Council of Bantam, seeing from it the satisfaction Your High Nobles have pleased to express in approving my small accomplishments, which bored my inner contentment, finding myself spurred on with a redoubled dutiful zeal to be able to give Your High Nobles ever more satisfaction. Just as I now have the honor, since the date of 15 May, of bringing what was undertaken by me here most dutifully to Your High Nobles' highly respected notice, after the troubles in Abong, in so far as those Regents and lesser peoples had settled, were also made known to me together with the King's ministers Raden Tiaccra Nagara, who had desired our decision in that regard, had succeeded fairly satisfactorily and those people had already returned for the most part to their district in the beginning of June, except the son of the deceased Pangerang Erria, named Raden Salan, who had previously united with Raadiake Lip, having obtained the approval of most of his countrymen in that regard; all recorded more fully in the accompanying daily register under the dates of 16 and 22 March, also 30 May; departing on the 18th of June thereafter with the Pangerang Sira Bomi toward Bantam, in order to solicit from the monarch the promotion of the Pangerang Goadra and such further matters. To as before. I found it good on the 13th of June to commission the King's servant, the Pangawa Pangerang Jeijsingo, to carry out a general survey and inspection in the Conkese and Rahamse district of all such plantations, planters, and pepper vines, who on the 24th of August thereafter, together with the corporal, four common soldiers, and the King's servant, his subordinates assigned to him for that purpose, returned and brought this pleasant report, as this enclosed specific list will most humbly show to Your High Nobles, this number being one hundred and ninety thousand, currently all still young trees, and as Your High Nobles will also please observe from my list and report of the Pangerans Nata Carsa and Braadia Sella dated 24 September 1765, since all the old trees found at that time at Oeiong Carrang, Sukkadana, and Carta Nagara, which partially still gave fruit, have now been delivered and cleared away; and according to the report of Jeijsinga, they had noted down nothing other than such trees upon which the pepper vines were already growing against them, and had currently found the number of young one, two, to three-year-old dadap trees in the newly established fields in both districts to be very considerable, with Poerwalaga of Carta Nagara standing out among all the cultivators of that fruit, having planted fifty thousand pieces in the ground with his subordinates, where they were also waiting for the rainy season to plant the young vines; and concerning this, he, after careful investigation, confronted the corporal and the Javanese Mas Jama Loeding, the King's servant, his subordinate, from which it appears and Your High Nobles will be pleased to see, that the condition and finding on that side is also not unfavorable; indeed, it appears to me as if a rivalry currently exists between those peoples and their neighbors in the Abong district, the one not wishing to be inferior to the other regarding the abundance of that cultivation. From Bantam, the 30th of September 1765, From Bantam, the 30th of September 1765. their good promise found in my very humble letter of the 8th of May 1763, and successive admonitions given in that regard, while according to the report received from the pangerang Edieradja, residing at Panengahan in the said district, related by marriage to those of the settlement of Gedong Pekowang, who had made a journey thither and returned on the 2nd of August of the current year: that the head regent of the settlement of Tjoballak, pangerang Morbo Allam, also known as Sultan Samang, was in a dispute with those of the settlement of Agoeng Allam Kabir, arising from the detention of the former's concubine, for which Allam Kabir pretended that this detention was done in revenge for the forged design and, according to an intercepted letter, Morbo Allam had attempted to have him killed by the Abongers on his journey to the Bavian river situated in the upper lands of Poetis; that the people in the said district, especially those of the first-mentioned settlement and the settlement of Batin Edilradja, had requested upon his coming down that the resident and the King's servant be pleased to take notice of this, wherein they had further shown him their few wide flourishing standing pepper plantations, but that of Tjoballak, belonging to one named Terronidjaja, whose field upon which ten thousand fine young trees, already all provided with vines, now lay abandoned, while in fear each remained on his guard and only sought an opportunity to attack the other. This report furthermore confronted that of the head regent of the settlement of Bazaar, named pangerang Natadilaga, who came down on the 3rd of the same month with one Tumenggung Sinnan Balawa, as plenipotentiaries of the Barkoang grandees, adding thereto that his son Mandalo had come down from Bandar Dalam, where rumors went that Morbo Allam of Tjoballak had found an advantage to surprise Allam Kabir, and that one from the settlement of Gedong was dead and another so wounded, though the latter did not stand by this, saying he had no dead or wounded among his subordinates; but Natadilaga, who told me he believed the closest to the truth of this to be a politesse of the latter, for by acknowledging to have suffered such, he makes the taking of revenge difficult for himself and causes his adversary to be much more on his guard. In order to prevent all further consequences, Natadilaga was of the opinion, as is often customary among them on such occasions, that if the slaughter and wounding as reported were the truth, one should demand a pledge from Morbo Allam as the party that had already exercised revenge, which was reckoned, depending on whether one is of high or lower birth, to be sufficient for one and a half manslaughters, called bano among them, who would certainly consent thereto; and having obtained that, one would inform the bloodthirsty and most injured party, who, he also thought, would raise objections against the aforementioned, as being unable to match or equalize in nobility with those of Tjoballak; whereupon this Regent, along with some neutral chiefs in that district, would try to decide these disputes and their differences at once if possible, and see the parties reconciled again; if not, then to effect that they come down, and if they would not resolve to do that either, then to retain their pledge and await our further orders. I proceeded hereupon to deliberate with the King's servant Siacera Nagara on what ought to be done in this matter to prevent all further consequences and, if possible, to preserve the pepper crop; and after mutual consideration, found as the readiest means then at hand to charge the aforementioned Natadilaga with this delicate commission, after having first gathered his opinions as well.

The authorized representative of the Backoang notables, already mentioned after the estimation, had arrived with that regent to inform me and the King's servant that, with the approval of the majority of those inhabitants, his eldest brother named Magmot, sons of the deceased Pangerang Sedakala, had been chosen as Aboebackar's successor, as it belonged to him according to the Lampong constitution, and their father, on that basis, being advanced in years and sickly, had transferred the right of seniority and first regent to the aforesaid, and that after his death Magmet or his eldest son had to step forward again. That the Pangerangs Sukeriaya, Gede, and Taconan, as well as his aforesaid brother, sent their apologies that they could not come down for the present, as they were currently busy somewhat restoring their burned-down houses, to which was added, on top of a general shortage and scarcity of paddy, that everyone began to ensure that their paddy field was prepared in good time. That as far as Aboebackar's eldest son named Plimbang was concerned, he presently stayed mostly at Balenbangan with the Pangerang Seronting, and although he wished to be chosen as his father's successor, for which reason he did not want to maintain any intercourse, much less friendship as before, with Magmot, he otherwise behaved well. That several upstream peoples, principally those from the Wijbosse, had approached the children and family of Aboebacker for cash and other items that they still held of theirs, and which had been taken away and retained by Aboebacker without the slightest justification, but that his brother the aforesaid Pangerang and the rest of the family had requested a postponement for the time being, and as soon as paddy was planted would answer them, either to come and satisfy them, or to appeal against their claims, and address themselves for a decision where appropriate. I have also had difficulty with the downstream peoples regarding their request during the scarcity of paddy and rice, which I could not pass over without making a small retreat here to bring it further to Your Right Honourables' most esteemed notice, because on 25 June the King's servant appeared inside this fortress with several pangawees and Lampong notables, first notifying of the poor harvest of their paddy fields, they foresaw a general shortage of that grain for this year, to which was added, they said, that the Pangerang Natadilaga and his subordinates bought up this crop in considerable quantities in the Abong and Sonke districts, which they sold again at a high price in the Wijbosese, where that crop had completely failed, which had not been permitted previously, and during a similar shortage the transport to that region had been prevented by the people of Paggerdewa, requesting that it might now also be opposed. This having been considered, their request foresaw that if this was agreed to, the Wijbosese would move to another region to obtain it, and it was deemed best to postpone them provisionally until Natadilaga's arrival, wanting then to see how best to regulate the transport, who was then expected in the next few days, which they accepted.
