The small ship De Jonge Petrus Albertus having departed with our humble letter of 3 September, of which the duplicate accompanies this, and having passed out of sight of this roadstead on the 10th, we were honored on the 16th following with the arrival of the bearer of this, bearing Your Noble High Mightinesses' highly respected letter and enclosures of 27 August preceding, all of which were found to conform to the register. And it being particularly evident to us therefrom that Your Noble High Mightinesses earnestly desire to have the said vessel back from here promptly, we made all possible preparations for that purpose in our session the following day, such that we hoped to have the good fortune, for once, to satisfy Your Noble High Mightinesses in this. From Sum=s West Cust the 30. Novemb: 1765. From Sum=s West Cust the 30 Novemb: 1765. to give better satisfaction than we have been able to do up to the date of this letter; but the frequent rains and the high water drainages which occurred here during that time have noticeably delayed us in this matter, so that we now only find ourselves in a position to let the aforementioned vessel undertake its return voyage, as your High Noble will ascertain more fully and clearly from the ship's log and the daily notes kept here concerning the unloading and loading of that vessel, accompanying this under No 3; to which we respectfully refer. The expenses which the aforementioned vessel incurred during its lay days here in the roads amount to somewhat more than ordinary, owing to the refreshments provided to the crew at the request of the ship's officers, as the expense account No 4 attached hereto indicates; but since on the other hand the salt meat and pork, which were saved on the refreshment days, turned out to our advantage, we trust that your High Nobles will be pleased to favorably pass the aforementioned expenses. The cargo brought by the aforementioned vessel was properly delivered, and nothing beyond or short was found on it, other than the ordinary spillage according to the findings under No 5, which we accordingly validated for the ship's officers and had written off in our books to the profit and loss account. Regarding native affairs, nothing unusual has occurred since our last letter; the only thing we deem necessary to report to your High Nobles is this, that the matters concerning the Radja van Troesang are still in the exact same state as we recently had the honor to inform your High Nobles; and that furthermore, on the 14th of the past month, we received here, and on the 22nd thereafter dispatched, an envoy from the second Menangkabau prince, who is otherwise called the prince of Sorgijtrap and is held in high consideration among the natives. Who was very pleased with this embassy, the more so because this prince was for a long time not all too pleased with us, and the Honorable Company consequently had not been honored with one since the month of April 1759. The Tstamie or large letter received from him, which was framed in very friendly terms, was answered in polite and fitting terms, and we had this sent off by the aforementioned envoy with a small gift for his principal, which we hope will be to your Right Noble's satisfaction, seeing that it does not exceed what was given to that prince in April 1757 and 1759, and amounts in purchase value to only ƒ 293: 1:—. In the latter part of the month of September, we received the unpleasant news from Baros that the post established at Tappis, in the night between the 5th and 6th of the aforementioned month, was unexpectedly attacked and captured by a party of Acehnese pirates: that the Buginese non-commissioned officer and 3 privates were taken prisoner, and one Buginese soldier was killed on the spot, and finally that the aforementioned non-commissioned officer, having escaped these people, returned to Baros with the news of this fatal incident. From which one sees by experience that with such small garrisons and precautions nothing can be accomplished, neither against the Acehnese nor against the attack of the English, who to all appearances also do their best to make the trade in the local products difficult for us, which has also moved us, before restoring the aforementioned post, dutifully to present this matter to your High Nobles and to request your special orders regarding it, as we hereby respectfully do. Meanwhile, we have recommended to Resident Sieben that he avoid all public difficulties with the Acehnese and other harmful nations as much as can be done with reputation, and accommodate himself somewhat in trade, as the principal objective, to the circumstances of the times in which one finds oneself, preventing, however, underhand that this rapacious nation settle itself firmly at Tappis, as the aforementioned Resident wrote to us that he feared. The new Sultan of Indrapoera, having finally obtained complete possession of that district, and now having established very good orders there regarding the pepper and rice cultivation, requested us therefore in the month of October for a chaloup in order to cross over here to take his oath to the Honorable Company as protectress of the lands and peoples subject to him, as well as to negotiate some matters concerning this and the adjacent provinces, which, being by no means able to refuse, we granted, the more so because the chaloup De Goudvink was otherwise appointed to convey the goods brought for Adjerhadja to that residency. Regarding the Panglima and the Penghulus of Padang, we have the honor to report to your High Nobles that they have delivered to us a present of 15 taels of head-dust gold, in the letter accompanying this under No 6 for your High Nobles, which we hereby respectfully offer to the same; and knowing of nothing more to add at present, we proceed to the matter of commerce, whereof we already informed your High Nobles in our last of 3 September the reasons why it did not turn out as blessed in the recent financial year 1764/5 as in the year before, or anno 1763/4, when at Padang a purchase amount of ƒ 205559: 13: 8 was turned over.

From Sumatra's West Coast, the 30th of November 1765. ...had been turned over with an advance of ƒ87133:9: or 42 1/3 percent, the gold being calculated at ƒ31:10: the [illegible], and now positively showing the outcome thereof to Your High Nobilities in the accompanying return No. 7, Your High Nobilities will observe therefrom that in the year 1764/5 a purchase value of ƒ118045:18: was turned over with an advance of ƒ53223:16: or 45 1/10 percent; so that this year ƒ87513:15:8: less was disposed of and ƒ33909:13: less profit was gained than in the past year, which we, because of the encountered and communicated adversities, humbly request Your High Nobilities not to attribute to any lack of zeal or neglect of duty, but to the true causes thereof. The collection of products at Padang consisted in the year 1763/4 of 5574 taels and 2 29/20 mace of gold and 57375 pounds of black sifted pepper; and although this past financial year no more than 3203 taels and 13 1/20 mace of gold were traded in, the pepper cultivation has nonetheless been so opulent that we here alone have acquired a quantity of 100316 pounds of it, which increase of pepper we hope will remove the apparent displeasure of Your High Nobilities regarding the reduction of the gold, the more so as we can assure Your High Nobilities: that the native is now finally beginning to relish the advantage of the pepper cultivation again, and consequently applies himself to it with all zeal; so that we flatter ourselves that in this new financial year we shall be able to collect an even more ample quantity of that grain than mentioned above. And stepping off from Padang herewith: From the cargo brought in by the ship De Jonge Samuel, the administrators have drawn up a price current which accompanies this under No. 8, with the request to be permitted to proceed with the sale of the cargo according to its tenor; and since the Coromandel linens yielded well over the stipulated percentages, and the remaining goods agreed with the sale approved by Your High Nobilities in the past year, we thereupon authorized the said administrators to proceed with the sale of that cargo in such a manner, which we request may be favorably approved by Your High Nobilities, as well as: The authorization granted to the repeatedly mentioned administrators for the sale of the thirty-eight packs of linens from Adjerhadja lying here in the warehouses, of which they made known in a written report that they feared that through a longer stay some damage might occur to them, and therefore requested the aforementioned permission. 11. We proceed to Ayerbangies, from where we have the honor under No. 9 to offer Your High Nobilities the return of the trade conducted there in the past year, from which Your High Nobilities, if it pleases you, will be able to observe that in that year a purchase value of ƒ36017:2:8 was turned over there with an advance of ƒ12690:5:8 or 35 1/5 percent, the gold being calculated at ƒ31:10: the [illegible], according to which account in the past year or 1763/4 a purchase value of ƒ54117:17:8 was turned over, with a profit of ƒ19944:16:8 or 36 1/16 percent, from which it then appears that this year or the year 1764/5 at the aforementioned office ƒ180:15: less was disposed of and ƒ7254:11: less was obtained in gross profits than in the past year, the cause of which we can ascribe to nothing other than the same inconveniences which we have encountered here. The collection there in the year 1763/4 consisted of 1278 taels and 3/00 mace of gold and 300 chests of ordinary white benzoin, and this year, due to the lesser turnover of merchandise, it consists solely of 983 taels and 15 3/16 mace of gold, as the further collection of benzoin at that office has been and remains suspended until Your High Nobilities shall be pleased to order otherwise in that regard. The amount of the 300 chests of benzoin which we took the liberty in our previous letter to request Your High Nobilities to have delivered to the attorneys of the Resident Boudewijnsz, the same has paid to us in gold, calculating the real [illegible] against 19 rixdollars, at which price we have accepted the same into the Honorable Company's treasury subject to further approval from Your High Nobilities, and in return have restored the surety provided by the said resident. Having arrived from Ayerbangies at the Baros office, we have the honor under No. 80 to offer Your High Nobilities the return of the sales made there in the year 1764/5, whereby it can be seen that a purchase value of ƒ4579:6:— has profited ƒ7086:18: or 154 3/8 percent; and in the year 1763/4, on a purchase of ƒ6243:2:8, only ƒ6261:14: or 100 1/4 percent having been profited, it thus appears that in this past financial year ƒ1663:16:1/2 less was turned over, but ƒ825:4: more was profited than in the preceding year. The collection of gums has consisted of 875 pounds of extraordinary white benzoin, 28875 pounds of ordinary white, and 250 lb of camphor; and whereas in the preceding year only 15125 pounds of ordinary white benzoin and 37 1/2 cans of camphor oil were collected, it appears from this as well as from the sales that affairs at Baros can still pass well enough. Regarding the disputes to which trade there is presently subject, we have given to the Resident Pieben the orders which are already mentioned hereinbefore under the native affairs, and to which we respectfully request permission to refer. And having herewith reported on the trade of the northern offices, we now turn to those in the south, and first of all to the office of Adjerhadja, from where we have received the return accompanying this under No. 11, from which it appears that in the year 1764/5 goods to a purchase value of ƒ11306:10:8 were sold there with an advance of ƒ4646:12: or 41 1/8 per cent, the gold being calculated at ƒ331:10: the mark fine, according to which calculation in the year 1763/4 on a purchase value of ƒ10132:2:8 a profit was made of ƒ4565:7:8 or 45 per cent, which shows that in the most recent financial year ƒ1174:8:— more was sold there, and ƒ81:4:8 more in gross profit was obtained than the year before. The products collected there in the year 1764/5 consist of 290 thails and 5 maas of gold and 15675 lb of winnowed black pepper, and since in the year 1763/4 they consisted of only 267 thails 13 maas of gold and 14275 lb of pepper, this demonstrates that the affairs of this office, in the most recent financial year, make a better showing than in the past year. The supplies brought from Batavia for that residency we have forwarded thither with the sloop de Goudvink in the same manner as we have done via the sloop de Ida Wilhelmina regarding Ayer Bangis. And having for the present nothing further to report with respect to Adjerhadja, we turn back to Pulau Cingkuak, where according to the return of sales under No. 12 in the year 1764/5, no more than a purchase amount of ƒ32526: was sold with a gross advance of ƒ10985:—:8 or 33 3/4 per cent, the gold being calculated at ƒ331:10: the mark fine, according to which calculation in the year 1763/4 a purchase amount of ƒ60743:11: was sold with an advance of ƒ16546:8:— or 27 1/3 per cent, from which it is evident that in this most recent financial year an amount of ƒ28217:11:— less was sold there, and ƒ5561:7:8 less profit was obtained than the year before. The collection recently or in the year 1764/5 consisted of 838 thails and 7 4/5 maas of gold and 38162 1/2 lb of pepper, and whereas in the year 1763/4 there was collected 1476 thails 8 9/20 maas of gold, and 31000 lb of pepper, it is clearly evident from this that the collection of gold has decreased markedly and that of pepper on the other hand has increased. From what we have now said concerning the trade of each office in particular, it will, as we hope, appear somewhat to the satisfaction of Your Right Honourables that in the year 1764/5 on this Coast there was sold in ordinary merchandise a purchase amount of ƒ202474:17: with a gross advance of ƒ88632:12:— or 43 2/3 per cent, the gold being calculated at ƒ331:10:— the mark fine. The products which during the course of the past financial year were collected on this Coast against merchandise and new currency consist of 5226 1/2 thail of gold of 26 1/2 carats, 154155 1/2 pounds of winnowed black pepper, 28875 pounds of ordinary white benzoin, 875 pounds of extraordinary white benzoin, and 250 pounds of Baros camphor, which is then all that we were able to obtain in the year 1764/5 to satisfy Your Right Honourables' requisition of returns, and of which we now have the honour to send to Your Right Honourables with the bearer of this everything that is on hand here and on Cingkuak; we shall furthermore, under favourable interpretation, take the liberty in the beginning of February to send the returns now remaining behind to Your Right Honourables with our books and annual papers of the year 1764/5, together with the requisitions for the year 1766/7, with one of the sloops on hand. It would have served as a particular satisfaction to us if we had had the good fortune to furnish the requisitioned white pepper, if not entirely, at least partially, but the reasons why this cannot take place were already communicated to Your Right Honourables in our previous letter, to which we respectfully refer. For the 50 soldiers whom it pleased Your Right Honourables to send hither upon our requisition, we express our humble gratitude: the same arrived here in good condition, but have since decreased markedly, so that we have been able to relieve and send back to Batavia no more than one sergeant and twelve privates, as appears from the accompanying name list under No. 13. Pursuant to Your Right Honourables' highly esteemed order regarding the return of the redundant heavy ordnance on hand, we immediately had an exact survey made both here and at the subordinate offices, and found that of what was present on this Coast, no more could well be spared than 33 pieces of iron cannon of various sorts and 4 pieces of metal swivel guns, of which 31 pieces of cannon are being transferred from here and Cingkuak with the bearer of this, since the remaining 2 pieces and the 4 metal swivel guns are still awaited from Baros and Adjerhadja, and will follow with the aforementioned sloop. Just as, besides the aforementioned ordnance, there are further transferred herewith all unserviceable sidearms and firearms that we have collected here from the subordinate offices and which are specified on the invoice. The five foreign Chinese who, according to our last letter, were to come over with this vessel, having requested us to be permitted to return to Batavia with a native vessel that belonged to them, we deemed it proper to grant their request, in the hope of Your Right Honourables' favourable approval. Proceeding from there northwards to Priamang, we find nothing to report that merits Your Right Excellencies' esteemed attention, other than that after much wrangling with the regents of Toujou Cotta we have agreed, in place of their deceased radja named Radja di Radja, to appoint to Head Regent of those negorijs the person of Soetham Bijnon, who, being judged not only the most legitimate, but also the most capable for this, was sworn in on the 23rd of February last in the Landraad, and has departed as such for his district. And here stepping off from the mainland coast, we proceed to the Honorable Company's allies on the subordinate islands, and first of all to Poulo Batoe, from where we received reports in the month of December last that the inhabitants there were in disagreement with one another, and that some of them, contrary to the contracts entered into with us, brought their products, consisting principally of coconut oil, to the English at Naiter instead of to Padang. In order to prevent this in the future, we, considering that this island lies closest to Aijerbangijs, instructed Resident Boudewijnsz there, after the unloading of the sloop the Haazewind, with which we fulfilled the Resident's requisition, to cross over thither with it to investigate this matter further, to establish the necessary order there, and subsequently to provide us with a written report; and the same having been received by us, we now have the honor to present it to Your Right Excellencies under No. 6, to which we request permission to refer. Of which capital some has already been partially dispatched, and now the returns and the still remaining gold from the aforementioned date are finally departing, while the cash has already been greatly diminished through the purchase of pepper, the furnishing of salaries, board money, and other expenditures; as well as the merchandise, of which, by the last of February, already over 200 packages had been disposed of, which gives us hope to be able to present this new financial year before the eyes of Your High Nobles with a reasonable return. From our requisition for the coming financial year, enclosed herewith under number 8, it will be evident to Your High Nobles what manner of remainders were still on hand at the drawing up thereof, and what goods on his requisition and the necessities for his requisition for the upcoming financial year 1766/7. However, since upon drawing it up there were still about 131 packages of textiles of various sorts remaining in balance, and the annual consumption here usually amounts to not much more than between 50 and 90 packages, we conclude that this requisition was set too generously, and that the fulfillment of 100 packages will be sufficient for the upcoming financial year, the more so because the amount requested for the household maintenance there is easily three-quarters too much, in proportion to what Your Right Nobles have granted for the household maintenance here. The trade books of the subordinate offices have been found without fault, amounting to a sum of ƒ 90013: 5:–, of which the indigenous Regents, both at Padang and at P:lo Chinco and Adjarhadja, owe ƒ 1913: 18: 8, which are successively deducted from their entitlements; item, the former Resident at Baros, Coenraad Meertens, ƒ 19871: 18: 8; and finally the former Resident at Adjarhadja, Christiaan Ernst van Seijfferth, ƒ 68247: 8:–, in reduction of which latter debt, since the previous year, a sum of ƒ 3566:—:— has been collected through the aforementioned Radja of Adgarhadja; there being furthermore regarding this the account of differences in the calculation of the gold of the aforementioned van Seijffert amounting to ƒ 3549: 7:—. Regarding the compensations and levies: nothing has occurred since our last, except only that in our session of the 21st of January we imposed upon the servants at P:lo Chinco a compensation of ƒ 242: 8:— for the loss incurred and the loss of profit on 80 pieces of damaged Belgarij cloth that were found among a parcel of 418 pieces, as Your High Excellencies will be pleased to see in more detail from the report of the servants accompanying under No. 12, item the declaration attached thereto and the auction return. And as it appears to us that the said servants are not entirely the cause of the aforementioned damage, we add our request to theirs and beseech Your High Excellencies to be pleased to discharge them from this compensation, charging it to the loss account. As Poulo Chinco had charges of ƒ 8031: —: 8 and in profits no more than ƒ 8127: 18: 2 16/16, so that it contributed only ƒ 96: 17: 8, whereas on the contrary in the year 1764 the profits surpassed the charges. Concerning the charges and profits of the past financial year: it has appeared to us from the received financial statements of the subordinate offices, which accompany this under No. 15, that they brought to the credit of this main office in net profits ƒ 27025: 19: 8, and were charged for expenses ƒ 25869: 11: 8, so that altogether they contributed a sum of ƒ 5156: 5:—, which was caused by the good outcome of the two northern offices. Besides the trade and pay books of this coast, we have the honor to report to Your High Excellencies that the booklets of the subordinate offices, having been inspected, were found without errors and accordingly incorporated into the main or trade books of Padang. And having herewith concluded everything concerning the trade of the past book year, we only attach under No. 17 our balance sheet, the revised regulations on the expenses of this Coast according to Your Right Honourables' respected orders, following which the comparison has been made, and on which footing we shall seek to bring the expenses as far as possible. Furthermore, we take the liberty to report to Your Right Honourables regarding salaries that the Bugis stationed on this Coast, who have served here five full years, have requested us for the payout of their half wages credited by the Company; but since, according to the orders, we are not permitted to do so without Your Right Honourables' special authorization, we have, in order to obtain that authorization, had the roll of petitioners drawn up under No. 18, which we have the honor to present to Your Right Honourables, along with two lists of the Bugis military and Moorish sailors who died on this Coast in the year 1764/5. Regarding the ecclesiastical and domestic matters, as well as those of the foreign nations, we presently have nothing positive to report to Your Right Honourables, and we therefore respectfully refer in that regard to what was stated in our previous letters. With respect to judicial matters, nothing else has occurred since our last reports that merits Your Right Honourables' respected attention, except that a European soldier named Palmasus Vobliaans, having assaulted the commanding Sergeant Joseph Mattua on guard parade, was handed over to the Court of Justice for that reason, to be punished by the same according to the requirements of the case as an example to others.
