By a letter from the Chief and Council at the office mentioned in the margin, under the ultimate of the past month, stating among other things: that from the linens recently collected so little firti resulted that from all the assortments it could not make up three bales, and that moreover a heap of torn and unmerchantable pieces were mixed in, so that they, the servants, had returned that merchandise to the suppliers, it was agreed to approve the same. Beside the writing of the servants at the office mentioned alongside of the 24th of the last past month, there having been forwarded a petition from the Chief, the merchant Cornelis Rietveld, addressed to the High Government of the Indies, the 8th of January to approved to reply as follows. to be relieved of the compensation of 285 3/4 lbs of cloves imposed upon him as per the Resolution of 2 December last past, amounting in money to ƒ 2002:14:8, and requesting this Ministry to excuse him, Rietveld, on the grounds of the reasons alleged in that petition, from payment until such time as Their High Mightinesses shall be pleased to decide finally in this matter, offering, if he should succeed in this, to provide security for the aforementioned amount; but with the nullification of the previous deed of security, which was provided by him and executed on the 12th of August last by Bolleram and Sanker Serkaar, as well as inserted in the resolution of the 26th of August last; thus, after deliberation, it was resolved and agreed to send the aforementioned petition to Batavia at the first opportunity and to also accede to the further request of him, the 8th of January Rietveld, provided that, according to his offer, he provides security for the ƒ 2002:14:8 until the time Their High Mightinesses shall definitively dispose of this matter, at which time the abovementioned guarantors can also be relieved of the obligation under which they have been until now. Jacob Eilbracht, Secretary the 8th January with the 10th January His Honor produces a Persian Declaration concerning a Theft in the Company's Village Bara Negger insertion of the same Saturday the 10th January Anno 1767: in the afternoon, all present. produced by the Director the translation of a Persian Declaration from the Rayat or inhabitant of the Company's Village Bernagoor, concerning the theft that was committed in his dwelling on the 4th of this month, and of which he had already given verbal notice to His Honor on the occasion that the latter found himself at the aforementioned place upon his departure for Calcutta, and at the same time had requested all possible assistance toward the recovery of his suffered loss: the aforementioned paper reading as follows, Seggernaat Tjettojeh inhabitant of Bara Negger alias Bernagoor, shows That on Sunday the 4th January 1767 in the evening at two gharis or according to our time half past seven or thereabouts, a troop of thieves, who by some are estimated at one hundred, by others at two hundred, and by a third up to three hundred men, with burning mashals, and provided with muskets, arrows, cutlasses, etc., had appeared in his house. That one of the chief thieves was carried in a palanquin and the other was mounted on horseback. That these people, having first broken the doors of his dwelling and thus having entered inside, subsequently had smashed open the chests and had looted and taken away with them from there, first an amount of 50000 Rupees in cash money and then furthermore the value of about 20,000 Rupees in gold and silver jewelry, item copperware and other goods. the 10th of January regarding the receipt of the Cargo Declaration of the skippers and to instruct the Bookkeeper Willem Kerkman, who is to depart downstream tomorrow for the dispatch of the Return ships, to survey and examine accurately upon their return the situation of the aforementioned Village, and whether it would be possible to enclose the same, as it lies open on all sides, in one way or another, and thus protect it against the attack of such raids. Whereupon, having deliberated, it was unanimously resolved to agree with the proposal of the Director. Furthermore, it was understood to note hereby that the skippers of the return ships Vreedenstein and Jonkvrouw Cornelia Jacoba, lying ready to sail, having been interviewed and questioned in the meeting according to custom regarding the receipt of the Cargoes of their ships, as well as the provisions, declared that, as far as they are aware to date, everything had been well received. Collation and signing of the dispatched letters Lastly, in this meeting were collated and signed: A letter to the Right Honorable Gentlemen Seventeen, Six chamber letters to the Honorable and Most Respectable Gentlemen Directors, in Amsterdam, Zeeland, Rotterdam, Delft, Hoorn, and Enkhuizen, and One to the Honorable Lord Rijk Tulbagh, Extraordinary Councillor of India, as well as Governor and Director alongside the Council at the Cape of Good Hope. In the morning, all present except for the Fiscaal Otto Willem Falck, being ex officio at the anchorage of the ships. Proposal of the Director regarding the dispatch To begin this business, the Director presented to the assembly the difficulty that his Honor perceived more and more regarding the dispatch in the course of time of four well-laden return ships on the predetermined departure dates. To this end, reminding the members of the trouble taken to get the four most recently expedited ships away on time, the first two with a cargo of over 16 tons and the other two of 15 tons, but far from properly assorted as they ought to be. That his Honor considered that in the future there would be no chance at all of dispatching fully laden ships if one must adhere strictly to the fixed departure dates; for the revolution in the governance of affairs in this country, and the desertion of most weavers and laborers, had an extraordinary influence on trade, indeed so much so that his Honor deemed it high time to bring this adversity as soon as possible to the attention of our highly revered superiors, so that it might please their Honors to take and arrange their measures accordingly, and so to speak, to have this remedied somewhat. For it was indeed true that appearances arose to negotiate and establish certain conditions with the English, whereby trade could be conducted somewhat more peacefully and profitably, but whether they accept this or not, the general decline in trade will nevertheless be detrimental to us in either case, since the British, with all their superiority, were unable to accomplish so much as to dispatch well-laden ships early and at fixed times. In which regard his Honor cited as convincing proof that they would only dispatch their second ship on the 25th of this month, and have the last two follow in February and March next. Therefore proposing, since there was an opportunity to write to Europe via both England and France, to submit for consideration to the Masters, and subsequently also in the letter to be sent with the Welgelegen to the High Indian Government, whether it is not highly necessary for the interest of the Company to revoke the orders set for the dispatch of the Return ships, and to give us, just like the other foreign Nations, an indefinite liberty to let them proceed on their voyage according to how the delivery of the Returns turns out, or that we at least be permitted to dispatch them from the 1st of November to the end of January, without restriction as to what day and how many at once, until such time as there is an opportunity to send off four ships with a rich and well-assorted cargo; and that one might flatter oneself to be able to let them be followed by a fifth, if we were qualified to expedite such a vessel in February on any unspecified day, because the difficulty that might sometimes arise, namely that so late in the season, no ships

This small lot of bad white lead should, at the opportunity of a public auction, be ordered to be sold, caused by the fact that the 129½ pieces calculated back from the main settlement were not yet paid into the cash office according to the order, because in reality this account, according to the outstanding balances as of the first of September 1765, runs at a debit of 164 pieces and ƒ84:19:- as overleaf. Nadries silver remainder, as of the first of September 1765: with 101 pieces: ƒ88: 7: 8: Debit as just stated. The difference between these two arrears accounts must have originated from omissions and errors committed in earlier fiscal years, since in the main cash book nothing of this runs or is claimed as a remainder, and thus it also requires to be investigated. Merchandise. These are all remainders, and none of these items, except those cited above in the write-off of the warehouse masters from these aforementioned ongoing accounts, come into any consideration except that of: Cloves, with 30,602 5/16 lb. This quantity is far too large as long as the demand for this spice does not increase, for which there is little prospect, to recommend to the assistant in the first place if the condition of these lands does not change, and in the second place if the English continue to bring in so much of it. It would therefore, subject to the correction of wiser judgment, not be unadvisable that Their High Noble Excellencies be requested for the present not to send more of this spice hither, because this commodity, like all others, must through long storage deteriorate to such an extent that in the end the merchants will flatly refuse its acceptance. White lead, with 254 lb and ƒ40:12:8. It is an outrage that this good bears this name, looking more like rubbish than like that pigment; and it is not hard to believe, when one considers that the same was created by the fermenting and heating of the lead in the ship 's-Gravezande, with which this metal was brought in, caused by a leak in that hull, and that the same was weighed up out of corners and holes by its officers to complete the weight, and debited here as white lead. It would therefore be more proper that the warehouses be cleared of that commodity, as being of no use whatsoever, and the books cleared of this account. Camphor, with 310 lb and ƒ8: 3: —. This is a small remainder of the lots brought in during the fiscal year 1762/3 and already spoiled, whether by age or otherwise; however, it could be delivered to the medicinal dispensary to see if it were still usable for anything, and the books might well also be relieved of this account with such a trifle. With respect to the linen accounts, there is nothing else to remark except that the servants in the cloth hall and the invoice keeper be earnestly enjoined, in the preparation of the appraisals and invoices, to use all possible attentiveness and accuracy with respect to the names, prices, and sums, in order that the same may be prevented from such confusion as occurred recently. 75 statement from the Director regarding several chests of opium sold at a loss from the harvest of the year 1764, and about which was dealt with more extensively in the resolution of this assembly of the 13th of June, 17th and 20th of October, also 21st of November and 23rd of December of the past year; and that His Honour also wished to have the goodness to present the petition to be made by him in the most favourable manner, as well as to declare hereby, for his discharge, whatever might have come to his knowledge regarding the opium that the English had collected in that year: the Director, with regard to the first matter, has granted this to him, Lafont, under promise of recommendation, and in response to the rest of his request declared: that the former Lord Mayor at Calcutta, Mr. James Lister, had some time ago entered into conversation with His Honour regarding the recall of him, Lafont, from Patna, and when it was attested to him by the Director, the 27th of January that this had occurred because of the poor quality of the opium from the harvest of the year 1764, this gentleman had declared to His Honour that the opium traded by the British in that year and which he, Lister, as the agent of several prominent merchants, had dispatched from here, had, upon receipt in Calcutta, seemed reasonably good to him and all others who possessed any knowledge thereof, but that his correspondents had unanimously written to him that this drug, during the voyage, had so altered in constitution at sea that upon receipt at the places to which he had sent it, it did not resemble the same opium that he had invoiced. That the Director had objected to Lister on this point, that there was nevertheless evidence from elsewhere regarding the sound quality of the opium sold by his nation; but that that the 27th of January Director gentleman the 27th of January the 27th of January Resolution to have an extract of this delivered to Lafont. Entry of the findings of the general inventory of the last day of August. gentleman had in turn stated to His Honour in opposition that this must have been goods from a previous year, since the reports he had received agreed on this point, that the opium from the harvest of the year 1764 had, in general, turned out very poorly. All of which, in accordance with the consent of the aforementioned Director, it is understood that this note shall be kept, and that an authenticated extract of the same shall be delivered to him, Lafont, to make use of as and in such manner as he shall deem advisable. Hereupon, the Senior Merchant and Chief Administrator, the Honourable Menzo Isinck, submitted the findings concerning the general inventory of the Company's assets at this main office as of the last day of August last, reading as follows: Findings of the defects and shortfalls which, according to reports, were found during the general inventory as of the last day of August of the year 1766 in the trade and equipment warehouses and in the artillery; also the shortfall in weight of the silverware, concerning which the undersigned requests the ruling of this assembly, for the information of the trade bookkeeper, as follows: According to the report of the special commissioners, the Junior Merchant G. Herklots and Bookkeeper G.
