Pursuant to the promise in our humble latest of 7 November Anno passato, dispatched per the ships Vlissingen and Scholtenburg, we have the honor to present herewith to Your Noble, Grand, and Respectable Honours an extract from our resolution of the 29th of the above-mentioned month, containing the disposition regarding the findings on the delivered cargo, as well as the account of consumed provisions and victuals during the outbound voyage of the ship 's Lands Welvaaren. Regarding the first, we generally ordered the shortages written off, as noted in the findings, and had the nine barrels of sour beer emptied in the presence of special Commissioners; also crediting to the ship's officers the amount by which the shortage on the Rhenish wine is less than the permitted write-off of 13 1/3 percent; and likewise approved sending the 10,000 pieces of quills, which were suffocated and found upon our own inspection mostly useless and decayed, back to the Netherlands, as they now also are transferred per Bleijenburg in a small box, with a small invoice 524 by which the cost thereof is charged back to Your Noble, Grand, and Respectable Honours' Chamber. And regarding the consumption account, the remainders of 904 lb of salted meat, 11 3/10 cans of olive oil, and 8 1/2 cans of vinegar have been left on board under the responsibility of the ship's officers, and to serve in due time in reduction of the rations that must be issued for making the voyage of the said vessel via Ceylon to Batavia; while the remaining 54 pieces of Mexican dollars were counted into the Company's treasury by the skipper Simon Booth, and the 44 pieces of shirts were distributed among the return ships as customary; and the account itself, with the documents exhibited therewith, is also enclosed herewith. ƒ 67:16, that is 18 percent charges on own processing, with which the silk consigned in November passato to Your Honorable Grand Worshipful Chamber, pursuant to our resolution taken to that end and extensively communicated to the illustrious Assembly of Seventeen on the 25th ejusdem, must still be charged, in order to balance those charges as much as possible, which otherwise run into arrears yearly, and to keep the appearance of a deficit, which only originates from a proportionally too low calculation, off the collected raw silk, as improper, from the books of this Directorate: the spun silk, which is presently shipped per IJsselmonde and Bleijenburg, being charged with the very same expenses, and those ships being provided with a fairly well-assorted cargo of light money of n=m 8 ton each. On the occasion of the extracts received via Batavia from various Chamber letters, containing several committed errors and discrepancies in the invoices of the return ships sent from here since the autumn of 1766, which were handed to our invoice keeper, in order to account for himself and to provide a report, there being among other things also integrated to the same by the Director a list of errors in the invoice of the ship De Oranjezaal, received by him privately: we had thus thought, regarding these findings, to be able to report on this occasion to all the Chambers that complain about this, and at the same time to Your Honorable Grand Worships; but on the 3rd of this month, when those reports actually first came in, we found ourselves—as an extract resolution of this date, with the insertion of the report regarding the Amsterdam Chamber, demonstrates—in quite as great a sea of confusion as before, and therefore not in a position to take the necessary decisions thereon; on the one hand, because among the errors pointed out from the Netherlands, some were included for which, on the 18th of March 1768, while deliberating on a report regarding the examination of the trade books of 1766/7, we had imposed compensation upon the invoice keeper; and on the other hand, because on the said day, upon the report of the examiners, the actual balance of the returns did not agree with that which appeared in the books under the last of August 1767, or almost all the entries thereof did not match, some in the number of pieces, but mostly in the sums of money, and because time was then too short in order to trace the discrepancies as well as their origin, we had already taken a resolution and appointed a separate committee to investigate the matter thoroughly, without it having been possible, owing to the numerous erroneous and confused transactions, to complete this before the 6th of this month, when the report of the persons who had been commissioned to that work, the titular under-merchant Willem Kerkman, and the ordinary recalculator, the assistant Jan Casper Greegert, came in. But since it is said therein, among other things, that many of the pointed-out errors were charged in the financial year 1767/8, some having been included in that manner and others not, about which light will therefore have to be obtained not only from the invoice keeper, but also from those who are engaged in the examination of the trade books of 1767/8: we have once again had to postpone the final decision until after the dispatch of the ship 's Lands Welvaaren, when, or if possible before the departure of that vessel, the trade bookkeeper Ross and the aforementioned Kerkman will review the matter again, and make a further report of their findings and considerations; which we deem more appropriate than taking a resolution here or there at present, thereby making the confusion even greater and at times such that in the end there would be no way out of it. We hope, therefore, with the latest opportunity via Batavia to be able to supply Your Honorable Grand Worships with the required elucidation, and at the same time to send the invoices and further documents which could shed very much light on the correction of the errors: meanwhile humbly begging pardon for the one who committed all these irregularities, and who has caused Your Honorable Grand Worships, as well as us, the utmost displeasure. A certain Anthonij Voorster, formerly stationed as master carpenter in this Directorate, and repatriated in the spring of 1767 per the ship Jongvrouwe Kornelia Jacoba, and having settled, as has been learned, in Amsterdam, would according to the report made by the committee of orphan masters to us, as the matters of the orphans principally incumbent, sustain an action or claim on an estate administered by them of a deceased burgher named Cornelis Brengman, whose daughter he had married; and therefore, in order to prove his right thereto, he ought to appear before the Court of Justice here at this place, to which end we had also qualified them, because the aforementioned Anthonij Vorster had no one here on whom the service of writ could be performed, to request a citation by edict, which we, after due publication and affixing in loco, take the liberty to send over in a packet addressed to the Gentlemen Regents of the Burgher Orphanage in the city of Amsterdam, with the humble request that the same, if no omission has been committed herein, may reach its address, and that the liberty we take

However, since the said Anthonij Vorster, according to further notice from the aforementioned Orphan Overseers, has no one here upon whom service can be made, we have qualified them to request an edictal citation in order to appear in person or send proxies by a certain appointed time, under penalty of otherwise being and remaining barred from all right and claim to the aforementioned estate. And having obtained this, we, with whom the principal care of the affairs of orphans rests, hand over the same to be sent, under a favorable interpretation, to Your Right Worshipful and Worshipfuls, whom we hereby most politely request to have the citation enclosed herein served upon the aforementioned Anthonij Vorster according to the custom of Amsterdam, and to have the goodness to send us a return of service, in order to make use of it in the place where it belongs. The ship 's Landswelvaaren having discharged its European cargo and Cape wine, and the following findings and so forth having been drawn up regarding both by the Senior Merchant and Chief Administrator the Honorable Menzo Isinck, and reviewed today: Findings regarding the shortages and defects upon the unloaded cargo of the ship 's Lands Welvaaren from the Netherlands, arrived here, according to the annexed reports of the Commissioners, the undersigned requesting thereon the ruling of this assembly for the instruction of the bookkeeper, namely: According to the report of the specially appointed Commissioners, the Junior Assistants Regel and Vermeulen, the following shortages and defects have been delivered into the Dispensary, namely: 69 bottles of red wine, broken, leaked out, and short on 1000 bottles, calculated at 6 7/8 percent. 14 flasks of gin, likewise, 150 bottles, calculated at 9 1/3 percent. 13 flasks of brandy, likewise, 150 flasks, calculated at 8 2/3 percent. 6 flasks of distilled waters, likewise. 75 flasks of distilled waters. 56 kannen of olive oil, in ullage on 4 half-aams, 27 1/4 percent. 81 kannen of vinegar, in ullage on 12 leggers, 1 1/4 percent.
