In the morning, absent the members Zenner, Ross, and Hagha Damius; the first two due to indisposition, and the latter on account of engagement in the service. Submitted by the Honorable Director for resumption, the continuation of the general missive to be dispatched with the ship 't Huis ten Donk to the Right Honorable Supreme Indian Government; and while reading the article on the cash and the employment of the same, it was remarked how it was indeed mentioned therein that, pursuant to the resolution of 14 October past, from the stock that was on hand all the debts would be discharged, but that, since at present the capital on hand in silver and cash, as was already shown in the letter, only 5 January only consisted of 18 tons, His Honorable Worship deemed it best to let the still unpaid bonds of Mirza Abdul Kassim, amounting to sa. ra. 200,000.- or f 315,000.-, continue to run for the present, because otherwise it will turn out tight enough to begin the trade for this year, since from the aforesaid 18 tons the necessary expenses of the Directorate must still be deducted pending further relief, so that one will certainly be compelled to negotiate money on deposit in order at least, like our competitors, to come to market with ready money and not to increase the difficulty in which one finds oneself through the lack of funds, submitting therefore for consideration what ought to be done to the best advantage of the Company. 5 January Deliberation regarding this, and resolution to accept money on bills of exchange from the Company's servants. Whereupon deliberation being held, and it being understood with the well-mentioned Honorable Director that the interest of the Company was absolutely in the highest degree concerned in continuing the procurement through continual disbursements just like all other merchants, and that consequently it would be contrary to reason and the interest of our Lords and Masters to part with a sum for the obtaining of which there might after this date be no opportunity, and therefore resolved by a majority of votes to conform with the opinion of His Honorable Worship, namely not to discharge the aforesaid debt for the benefit of Mirza Abdul Cassim, but for the present to let it continue to run. And in order to supply the aforesaid lack of money as much as possible for the capital city, it is, upon the further proposal of the Honorable Director, resolved to accept money into the treasury from all Company servants who might request it, and to grant bills of exchange for it on the capital city, in the expectation that Their High Mightinesses, taking the predicament in which one finds oneself into favorable consideration, will be pleased to put the best construction on the contravention of the prohibition set against it by secret letters of 11 July of the previous year; the assembly having further also agreed that the Honorable Director and the Chief Administrator had granted some assignments with both the first and second consignment to the Netherlands, notwithstanding that this also seemed to conflict with the intention of the well-mentioned High Government by missive of 18 June last. 5 January

Right Honorable Sir and Honored Councilors, The undersigned Overseer of the Buildings, having received the extract from the findings of the Bengal trade books of the year 1764/1765 or from 1 September 1764 to the last of August 1765, with the remarks of Their High Excellencies placed beside it concerning the Ordinary and Extraordinary Repairs, takes the liberty respectfully to represent thereupon that he was most deeply affected to see therein how it had pleased the said high masters to make known their high displeasure concerning the high amount of those accounts, and in order that Their High Excellencies might not perhaps, through his silence, be led to imagine that carelessness or bad management was the cause thereof, and he might thereby incur their further displeasure, 50 11 January he hopes not to do wrong by demonstrating herewith that the Carpentry and Repair account some years before the repairs of the defects in the Company's buildings were undertaken by him amounted to more than was brought up by him during his tenure. And concerning the Extraordinary Repairs, these cannot well be determined annually, but amount to more or less depending on whether many or few defects are reported in the annual reports; and since the year 1766, these do not take place until after the Calculative Memorandum annexed to the said reports, of what the repairs will cost, has been submitted to this assembly, and it has been decided to allow those renewals to proceed according to the statement. It is true that these sometimes run rather high, but this must mostly be attributed to the condition of the Company's buildings, which worsens from year to year and requires constant maintenance and renewal; to which is added the considerable increase in the cost of building materials, and the increase in the daily wages of the workmen, which since eight to ten years make a difference of almost a capital sum. All of which the undersigned hopes may fully serve to demonstrate his innocence, while he humbly requests that it may please Your Right Honorable and Honors to present this report in the most favorable manner to Their High Excellencies, so that it may be fully evident to them that the high amount of these accounts is in no way to be attributed to carelessness or negligence. 54 we had arrived on the market, through a sort of indulgence or complaisance of the English Gomastas, at least still received some goods home, and according to the personal assurance of their Director, Mr. Chevalier, had received 5 tons of linens, and yesterday another 3 vessels with Chandrakona goods, whereas on the contrary our work was practically at a standstill, considering that matters were proceeding so severely in Chandrakona, Beddael, Jaggernathpur, and Harial that up to now one had not been able to obtain a single piece of goods from there, while from Haripal, Dhaniakhali, and Santipur only very few pieces had come in; wherefore His Honorable Worship proposed to the meeting on 19 January to 85. Resolution to buy a parcel of saltpetre complain de novo from here to the Calcutta Council by bringing in substance the aforementioned matter to their attention, and to testify that the freedom which the French enjoy over us appeared incomprehensible to this council, so that those Gentlemen may then explain themselves thereon and issue the requisite orders for the redress of such a state of affairs; with which the Members, without the slightest objection to the contrary, agreed. Initially, the Lord Director communicated to the assembly that on the occasion of the departure of the burgher Carel Lodewijk Blume to Batavia on the private ship the Hector, which in February of the past year had been chartered for the Company, His Honor had been privately informed by higher authority that such persons, whether they were actually granted burgher freedom or lent for some time to the free trade, had to take the oath of loyalty and obedience to the State and the Company; and that His Honor had found upon investigation that forms had also been expressly prepared here for that purpose, pursuant to which His Honor consequently proposed to place under oath the former third mate in the Company's service Pieter Raatjes, who on the 27th of January 1758 was permitted to enter into the service of private individuals, seeing that he had not yet complied with that, and had today handed to the Lord Director a petition in which he requested permission to depart as a passenger for Batavia on the ship 't Huijs ten Donk.
