Nagapatnam, 15 August Anno 1769 Nancquet de Jane Agreed E. G. Clercq Letter A: 329 To His High Honour, The High Noble, Right Honorable Lord Petrus Albertus van der Parra, Governor-General, Together with The Honorable Councillors of the Netherlands Indies, High Noble, Right Honorable, Far-Ruling Lord and Honorable Lords! Johannes Haselkamp, former cashier at Nagapatnam, shows with all humility how he, petitioner, by petition in the month of July past, for reasons alleged therein, requested among other things of Your High Honours the restitution of such monies as had been improperly paid to the Company and others on the Coast of Nagapatnam from his seized and recorded goods, monies, actions, and credits. How Your High Honours rejected that request under date of 9 August thereafter, and, in conformity with his obtained sentence, left him the liberty to institute his alleged right and action in that regard wherever and against whomsoever he should be advised. How he, petitioner, upon consideration of that decision, came under the supposition that his aforementioned request was framed in too general terms to expect a more favorable disposition thereon, and for those reasons deemed it most advisable, under the respectful hope of a favorable construction, to address Your High Honours hereby once again, but much more fully and with clearer demonstrations of his equitable right, and to present his humble request in all submission, solely to obtain that regarding which he, under respectful correction, believes that the Company, and no one else, is obliged to make him restitution, and which consists of an amount of 22196 rix-dollars and 20 stivers, which the warehouse master 330 Bonk, the cashiers Maertens, Looman, and Crucius, together with some tax farmers, remained in default to the Company, and which was paid to the Company in satisfaction thereof by the curators appointed over his, the petitioner's, seized and recorded goods out of his assets, according to the account presented herewith in all respect, notwithstanding that he, the petitioner, was entirely innocent in that regard, and not the least accountability incumbent upon him, but rather upon others who neglected to watch out in time for the aforementioned arrears according to their duty. In such manner as is all evidently demonstrated in the following discussion, namely, from the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th entries of the aforementioned account it appears that those curators, out of his, the petitioner's, assets, have paid to the Company the shortfall of the first warehouse master Bonk, deceased already in the year 1763, to the amount of pagodas 913: 16: 70. What reasons one had for this is uncertain, but that the same was done unjustly will immediately

appear immediately. The petitioner had, in his capacity as vendue master and by order of his superior, publicly sold various goods from the estate of the deceased cashier Crucius; and since a vendue master is liable for the proceeds immediately after the sale, these proceeds were likewise, by order of his superior there, taken into custody for the benefit of said Crucius, or rather in reduction of his debt to the Company. Thus, the funds had been accounted for, and the outstanding monies from that auction were and could not be considered other than funds that belonged to the petitioner in actual and real ownership, which therefore could no longer be encumbered by anyone through any attachment or otherwise. Much less could or might one, out of the petitioner’s means and without even hearing him, pay to the Company the debt or the arrears of a man who had already died two years and more previously. If it is true that Bonk fell short by this amount in his administration as warehouse keeper, then the Chief Administrator of that time should surely have reported this and, by claiming the same from the executors of his will or his heirs, have indemnified the Company. If this has now been neglected, as is indeed the case, what relation does the petitioner have to indemnifying the Company? One will perhaps reflect upon what was noted with those four items, namely that the disputed 913: 16: 70 pagodas were paid out of the auction monies of the widow Crucius, but this was improperly added merely to give it an appearance. The petitioner will not enter into any inquiry here as to how far the widow Crucius is bound to pay Bonk’s debt to the Company, as this does not belong to his department. The only remark he makes upon it consists in this: that he held no more auction monies of the widow Crucius under him, but that he had already, as said, accounted for the same to the Company in reduction of the debt of Crucius. And that consequently, out of those funds once accounted for to the Company, no second accounting could take place after that date, and that moreover for another servant. From the 10th item of the disputed account, it appears that from the funds of the petitioner there was paid to the Company 100 pagodas in satisfaction of an equal amount for which the cashier Martens, deceased in the year 1754, was responsible to account. If Your Right Excellencies would kindly turn your honored attention to this matter for a moment, then the petitioner does not doubt—having been kept ignorant of all this during his lamentable detention—that he has not only served as a cloak for those who, through indulgence or negligence, gave cause for these and the following abuses, but that the petitioner’s seized and recorded property, over and above that, has also served as a fund from which to satisfy the Company’s arrears and to indemnify themselves. That these 100 pagodas were supplied in the years 1741 or 1742 to the agriculturalists by the cashier Martens, by order of the administration, and were recorded pro memoria at the cash office until further orders, the petitioner does not in the least deny. And he also readily avows that these agriculturalists have long since absconded, and thus to demand the restitution of the same is wholly impossible. If, in all that time, no means was devised to write off that amount, and if, since inattention or neglect took place in that regard, the Company must be indemnified, then those who ordered this disbursement, or rather those who neglected to effect the collection in time, were surely obligated to do so. But by no means the petitioner in this matter, who after a lapse of 22 years first functioned as cashier, never signed for the takeover of these 100 pagodas, and also had no knowledge of them. According to the 13th, 28th, and 31st items of the questionable account, 7500 pagodas were transferred from the petitioner’s money into the Company’s cash, and it was noted therewith that it serves in reduction of the petitioner’s debt to the Company. To shed the required light on this matter, the petitioner will have to elaborate a little and preliminarily note in what manner this claimed debt came to light. When the cashier Paulus Loman passed away in the year 1762 and his cash was inventoried, there was found in it no more than 8508: 5: 70 pagodas, whereas according to the books it should have contained 21009 pagodas and 20 casses, and thus a considerable deficit of 12500: 13: 30 pagodas. Crucius, upon taking over the cash, signed only for the 8508: 5: 70 pagodas received in cash, without making any mention of the missing 12500: 13: 30 pagodas, and thus could

no accountability could on that account be imputed to him. Deele Crucius having stepped down as Cashier in the year 1763, and his cash balance having been audited, a considerable shortage of 9658 pagodas was also found. The exhibitor, having been ordered to take over the cash and to act as Cashier, required that amount to be paid into the cash balance, stating that otherwise he would not sign for it, and addressed himself to that end to the Governor and Director with a request for orders as to how he should behave in this matter; whereupon the exhibitor was ordered to have a bond executed for these lacking 9658 pagodas and to note it in the cash balance inside the column, with the Governor himself standing surety. The exhibitor was indeed somewhat reluctant and had little or virtually no inclination to comply with that order; but the forceful repetition of that command, and the threats made alongside it, paired with the consideration that he, the exhibitor, being a subordinate servant and having sworn obedience to his superiors, was consequently bound and obliged to obey these orders, necessitated him to comply with what was commanded. However, in the year 1764, towards the end of August, the cash balance being about to be audited, the exhibitor addressed himself once again to the Governor and Director with a request for payment of those 4658 pagodas in order to be able to show his cash balance complete in coin to the commissioners to be appointed for the general audit. And he received as an answer at that time: I will certainly instruct the commissioners how they must act in that regard; you just show them the bond, that is enough, it runs for my account. The aforementioned commissioners having come to audit the cash, not a word was spoken by them about the debit of Loman (no wonder, for that was still concealed from the exhibitor and several others), but indeed about that of Crucius, whereupon the exhibitor showed them the bond, which they, having inspected it, accepted as valid, saying: the Governor has ordered us to accept that bond as cash in the account since he would guarantee it; as this is evidently proven in the lawsuit by sworn attestations and is furthermore fully demonstrated by the Nagapatnam Resolutions of 13 August 1765. And since they now, without any prior knowledge of the exhibitor, transferred that noteworthy shortage of Loman in the trade books to the debit of the exhibitor's cash balance as cash actually received by him, this could have no other consequence than that his debit to the cash balance was thereby increased by 22158:18:30 pagodas, and he, the exhibitor (being unaware of all this), when he audited his cash balance only eight to nine months thereafter, necessarily had to fall short by a considerable sum. So that this has not only become apparent from the outcome, but can also be demonstrated therefrom sufficiently in law to have been the sole source of his, the exhibitor's, twenty-six-month harsh detention, cruel proceedings, loss of his earthly goods, indeed, in a word, of virtually his total ruin. Yet this being one of the points of his, the exhibitor's, action of recourse against the administration of Nagapatnam, he will therefore, with your kind indulgence, not express himself any further on this matter here, but gladly leave to Your High Honours' discerning judgment the decision applicable to such actions. And meanwhile, for the fulfillment of the objective intended herein, advance that since the exhibitor had no more signed for the lacking 12500:13:30 pagodas of the deceased Cashier Loman than had his predecessor Crucius, he could consequently in no way be held responsible for it, and much less be debited in such a covert manner in the trade books under the declaration that he had received those monies in full from the executors of Loman's will; for by that debit he was exposed to a shortage, and by the noted, partially untrue cause for which the debit was entered, he was made suspect of unfaithfulness and dishonour, for the reason that if he, the exhibitor, had actually received 12500 pagodas, 13 fanams, and 30 cash from the executors of Loman's will and had accounted for no more in the cash balance than 10008 pagodas, 23 fanams, and 26 cash, one would rightly have said of him that he had acted faithlessly therein; but this not being so, and the exhibitor, as has been proven in the lawsuit, having received no more than 10000 pagodas, 23 fanams, and 26 cash, and having also accounted for them, it remains irrefutable that he was wrongfully debited with these still missing 2491 pagodas, 19 fanams, and 4 cash; to say nothing of the fact that that entire debit of Loman concerned him neither directly nor indirectly, but rather the Chief Administrator, whose duty it had been to have a political resolution taken in that regard and to have the estate or the proceeds of Loman's estate attached in the hands of the executors, in order subsequently to be paid into the cash balance in settlement of the deceased's arrears, in which case one would certainly have taken the proper and honest course, whereas now, through all the leniency used in that regard, the concealment of this noteworthy shortage, and more besides, it can by no means be said to have been done. But rather that the same served to make a scapegoat of an innocent servant, in order thereby to cover up the mistakes of those whose duty it had been to watch over it, and moreover to indemnify themselves. And as regards the debiting of the deficit of Crucius, the situation is not one hair better, for Crucius ran short, the Governor and Director ordered that shortage

settlement with a bond provisionally to balance. The memorialist, as a servant, had to obey this order in accordance with his oath, all the more because the Ruler, by his surety, as it were took the consequences thereof onto his own account. And thus he cannot be said to be liable; however, if despite this cogent demonstration any doubt still remains, the memorialist is in a position to clear it out of the way as well. And he notes, to that end, that since he, the memorialist, at the first cash inspection (as cited herefore) made known his objection regarding that bond to the Ruler and the commissioners nominated for the cash inspection, and the commissioners approved the same and by order of the said Ruler (as they allege, and also have sworn under oath) accepted it as cash, he therefore is placed even further, and indeed entirely, beyond any claim. If those commissioners in their report concerning the inspection of the cash made no mention of the bond, and reported the proceeds thereof as found in cash, the accountability for this devolves upon them; and if they gave notice thereof to the Chief Administrator, then the accountability falls back upon him; and whichever way one turns or twists it, one will never find that the memorialist is liable in this regard, and from this it will follow as a matter of course that consequently the 7500 pag: counted in the cash were unlawfully taken from his means, and moreover that this deficit of Crucus, if at the final sale of his estate its proceeds were not sufficient, in all justice and fairness ought to have been paid either by the Governor and Chief Administrator, or by the commissioners nominated for the cash inspection. Lastly, according to the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd entries of the disputed account, the arrears of 4 leaseholders to the amount of 2584 pagodas, 12, 11 were paid to the Company, and this also out of the means of him, the memorialist. This payment was made pursuant to a political resolution, but on what foundation appeared altogether incomprehensible to the memorialist. He was indeed incarcerated, but never yet convicted of a crime worthy of such detention; proceedings were being carried out against him, but ordinaire modo, and thus it had been the duty of the ministry, before taking such a disadvantageous resolution, to consult with the memorialist in this regard. And as this mistreatment also serves as a point for his recourse regarding the injustice done to him against that ministry, in order to institute the same in due time here or elsewhere, the memorialist will leave it at that, and regarding the unlawfulness of that payment only state: That he, as Cashier, is as little liable for the collection of the lease monies as a Grand Cashier here, for the reason that both there and here a separate servant is to be found as receiver of the public domains, with whom the Cashier has nothing else to do than to receive from him the amount of such warrants as are issued upon him to that end, and thus he can never be held liable regarding the arrears of the leaseholders. It might be pretended that this payment was made from the proceeds of the goods seized from the leaseholders by execution and sold by him as vendue master, but against that the memorialist replies that those proceeds, by order of the ministry, were delivered and accounted for to the receiver Hoflager, and that the latter in turn, alongside yet other monies, transferred it upon a warrant into the Company's small cash vault, under accountability of the memorialist, and in reduction of the arrears of those leaseholders, who were each credited for that on their separate account, as shown in the lawsuit and can be further demonstrated with the trade books present here. Those proceeds now having been thus accounted for, and afterwards, without any prior knowledge of the memorialist, once again transferred out of his goods into the Company's cash, it certainly follows as a matter of course that a great unlawfulness resides therein with respect to the memorialist, who has nothing to do with the lease monies and by such arbitrary acts has had to satisfy twice one and the same debt entry, and that solely to diminish the arrears of the leaseholders, yes, possibly to bring some of them to an advantage through this, and thus to cover up through this the negligences of those whose unavoidable duty it was to watch over the falling behind of the leaseholders, and who (be it said with respect) are solely and exclusively accountable for this. Regarding all the remaining entries, both of the debit and credit of the account: in that respect it seems as if the memorialist will have to institute his recourse upon the ministry at Nagapatnam, although he can nevertheless not declare himself in particular regarding the one or the other in that respect, for: It has never yet been shown that the memorialist owed a single doit to the Company. The memorialist has also never been condemned to the payment of any deficit. They have arrested, seized, and inventoried his goods, actions, and credits, turned the same into money, and from that again made payments at will. Yet they have never given any other light or disclosure of all that than the disputed account, and which the memorialist still extracted here from the lawsuit; and consequently one will have to leave these entries in suspense for such a long time, until such time and season as the ministry of Nagapatnam shall see fit to comply with Your Right Honourable's order in relation to that presented by the memorialist.

granted to the petitioner the requested papers &a. on the 27th November Anno 1767. And whereas it is then established from all the foregoing, as clear as the sun at noon, that the petitioner regarding all the cited entries is completely innocent and subject to not the least accountability, whatsoever named, the petitioner also reasonably trusts that your High Noblenesses will by no means approve that he was made to pay in Nagapatnam that which he had never received, and regarding which he had never been subject to any accountability. As also that the Honorable Company should not seek to recover the loss caused to it by the infidelity and negligence of other servants of its, who has neither directly nor indirectly part or portion in that shortfall, much less out of his means, through apprehension, criminal proceedings, and bitter mistreatments, and since this was so exceedingly executed against the petitioner, alas, through a misguided management at Nagapatnam, as well as entirely erroneously and unjustly delivered to the Company out of his petitioner's means page 1098:5 or the sum of Rixdollars 22196: 20. –, and it remains permitted to everyone by law to seek and reclaim his goods at the place where the same are to be retrieved and found, thus it is that he petitioner with the utmost respect takes the liberty of humbly addressing your High Noblenesses herewith with a submissive plea that it may please your High Noblenesses in your goodness, being champions of right and justice and protectors of oppressed persons, to take the so lamentably mistreated petitioner into your own most high and mighty protection. By causing to be refunded to him here beforehand out of the treasury his moneys amounting to rixdollars 22196: 20. –, erroneously counted into it according to the annexed account and the trade books existing here, and still remaining therein, undertaking, however, to provide sureties to the satisfaction of the Company for that which might occasionally in due time be shown to incumbent upon the petitioner to pay. While he, with respect to his requested but not yet received papers, as well as regarding all the rest necessary for the redress of his petitioner's ruined condition, also most humbly implores your High Noblenesses' precious favor, so that he petitioner, who in his old age, and after having rendered 26 years of faithful and honest service to the Company, has become ruined through misunderstanding as well as otherwise, and thereafter has now spent more than three successive years in oppression, may finally thereby once again breathe a little, and be more or less partially restored both in his reputation and means. 343 Extract from a letter written by Their Right Noblenesses the Noble High Indian Government at Batavia to Coromandel, dated 30 December Anno 1768. And whereas the junior merchant and former Secretary and Cashier at your Main Office Johannes Haselkamp has addressed himself to us by petition in order to obtain restitution of various items, with which according to his statement his account is said to have been improperly charged, amounting together to a sum of 22196 Rds. 20 stivers, we have therefore, before making a final disposition thereof, seen fit to transmit to you in copy the aforesaid petition, together with the annexes submitted therewith, as is done hereby, with orders to have this accurately investigated and to report to the Government as soon as possible how matters actually stand with all the items mentioned in the said petition, and to what extent his claims made therein are to be credited, in order that we may be placed in a position to be able to dispose thereof with certainty and peace of mind according to equity; his account having in any case to be debited for the amounts of the two pay accounts, regarding which an accompanying report from the head of the General Pay Office is also mentioned as having already been remitted to the Netherlands by the earner in Anno 1749. Agreed. Naucqued De Jan EG Clercq Letter D 344 Friday the 2nd of June Anno 1769. Extract from the resolutions taken in the Council of Coromandel. Concerning the claim formulated by Haselkamp and the matters submitted by him to that end, it was resolved to have everything investigated anew in more detail and with the utmost exactitude, and to show in a report the condition in which the petty cash, having been under his administration and responsibility, was found upon the taking of inventory, and how, and with what funds all the deficit found therein was cleared, together with what further needs to be demonstrated, and the reasons why, out of the monies belonging to the estate of the widow Crucius, some charges were paid on behalf of her deceased father, the merchant, Trade Bookkeeper and First Warehouse Master Anthonij Bonk; as also regarding the further items which Haselkamp maintains ought not to have been charged to his account, in order that Their Right Noblenesses might be able to see therefrom how that affair actually stands; and to carry this out and fulfill it, it was further resolved to commission for this purpose the secretary of this assembly, Willem Duijnevelt, and the trade transferrer Johannes Scheuneman, as being judged the most eligible, because everything that was to be shown and demonstrated must be gathered from the secretarial and trade papers, for which they have the very best opportunity; and to add to them, for assistance and facility in providing the necessary disclosures, the curators in the estate of the said Haselkamp, the junior merchant Fredrik Willem Bloeme, and Bookkeeper Dirk Buijs. Agreed. Naccqueelt de Van EG Clercq Letter E 345 To the Right Honorable and Worshipful Sir, Pieter Haksteen, Extraordinary Councilor of Netherlands India, and Governor and Director of this Coast of Coromandel with its dependencies, together with the Council at Nagapatnam. Right Honorable and Worshipful Sirs, Sirs. Having been ordered, pursuant to the resolution taken in the session of the 2nd of June last, to investigate and to furnish Your Right Honorable and Worshipful Sirs with what is necessary regarding how far the request submitted and the claim formulated by the former Secretary and Cashier here, Johannes Haselkamp, in a petition presented by him to Their Right Noblenesses the Noble High Indian Government at Batavia, in order to obtain restitution of 22196 Rds. 20 stivers, which were charged to his account and were paid out of his assets by the curators appointed over his estate, is to be credited and well-founded; we have the honor to report our proceedings in that regard to Your Right Honorable and Worshipful Sirs with all respect. And to do this in order and, as far as is possible for us, in the most comprehensible manner, we reiterate his aforesaid submitted request, namely that there be returned to him the said amount of 22196 Rds. 20 stivers, which the deceased merchant, Trade Bookkeeper and First Warehouse Master Anthonij Bonk, the deceased cashiers Jan Martensz, Paulus Looman, and Francois Crucius, together with some farmers of the Company's domains of this city, had remained in default of, but which, as aforesaid, were paid out of his assets; appending in proof thereof the current account closed by the said curators under date of 22 August 1767, stating that the first, second, third, and fourth items mentioned on the debit side of that account, to the sum of Pagodas 913. 16. 10, were unjustly paid out of the vendue monies

accounts of the widow Crucius were paid on account of her deceased father Anthonij Bonk, and expatiates at length about the illegitimacy of that payment, because, he says, he had already accounted for those vendue proceeds in his cash book, and thus had accepted them in reduction of the debit of Francois Crucius to the petty cash. But in refutation of that statement, and in order to bring the matter most clearly and truthfully to light and before the eyes of Your Right Honorable and Stern Sir, it should be noted here beforehand in passing that Haselkamp signed the transfer of the petty cash from his predecessor Crucius without making the slightest exception, as was subsequently confessed by him, see copy of the transfer under Letter F accompanying this, annexed to the order of transfer dated 1 August 1763; thus it is indisputable that he became, and remained, wholly accountable for the debit of the said Crucius, as being a debt that he had fully taken over, and in addition had provided and secured himself with a bond drawn directly upon him, without the least consideration in that regard being in his favor. Likewise not the further assertion advanced by him, namely that in his capacity as Vendue Master, by order of his Superior, having sold various goods of the deceased Crucius, he had taken in the proceeds thereof as a consequence of the order received from his supreme Superior, for the benefit of Crucius, or rather of his debit to the Honorable Company, adding with greater emphasis that those funds were thus accounted for, on the grounds that a vendue master was after all liable for the vendue proceeds immediately after the sale. For how greatly that deviates from the truth can very easily be derived from the vendue roll itself of the aforementioned sold goods, held on 24 May 1765 and continued on the 25th and 28th of that month, wherein it is mentioned that the sale was held and took place at the request and for the account of the widow Crucius; thus it was her funds that originated from it, and it can even less be reconciled with the truth that those funds could have been accepted and accounted for by order of the Superior to the benefit of Crucius debit, for Van Teijlingen was already out of authority when those goods were sold, thus some three days before his flight, and he could even less have received that order from the present Lord Governor, on the grounds that His Honor was not yet acquainted with the actual condition of the Cash, apart from and besides the fact that those funds were to come in only after 2 to 3, and sometimes more months, as the difficulty one has here regarding the collecting of vendue proceeds is very common and thus no unfamiliar matter; but the most important of all is that Haselkamp cannot demonstrate by any document that he accepted the proceeds of the aforementioned auctioned goods for the account, or in reduction, of Crucius debit and accounted for them to the Honorable Company, for the vendue roll, which was not even signed nor closed by him, mentions nothing of it, much less can he produce an order from the Superior qualifying him to accept that money, considering that nothing may be handled, accepted, or disbursed at the money Cashes without an order previously being granted by the Lord Governor; that acceptance could not have occurred then by him either, since shortly thereafter, or two months and a few days after that held vendue, he fell under arrest, when the cash and specification book was itself several months in arrears; thus, if the acceptance and accounting of those funds, as was alleged, had taken place, it should have appeared from the bond charged to Crucius that remained in Haselkamp's possession, or else from the tall ledger that the Cashier keeps for his speculation and accounting, the balance of which, except for the funds running per memorie, must always agree with the cash book of the Honorable Company; but neither the one nor the other, because those funds were first demanded by the Curators and credited to Haselkamp's account; let it be supposed that those funds had been accepted to Haselkamp without the slightest deduction for the benefit of Crucius debit, then the aforesaid four entries, about which Haselkamp complains that they were improperly paid out of his means, would still have had to be satisfied out of the amount since received from a bill of exchange dated 10 December 1767, to the sum of f6938. 11. —, remitted from the estate of the Right Honorable and Stern Sir Baron van Eck from Colombo here for the benefit of Bonk his heir, the aforesaid widow Crucius, and paid out here to the Curators, only with the deduction of the 8 per cent agio, as having been remitted in new pagodas, as well as transferred by her again into the Company's Great Money Cash, in reduction of Haselkamp's debit to the petty cash; thus it was indeed the same, from which of those two amounts, whether from the vendue, or from the bill of exchange, the aforesaid 4 entries of 913 pagodas 16. 70. were discounted, as both being funds originating directly from Bonk his estate and, upon his decease, devolved upon his daughter and sole heir ab intestato, for otherwise no means, neither of Crucius nor of his surviving widow, were known here locally, other than those she inherited from Bonk; consequently, the same was and remained the nearest source out of which the Honorable Company could and had to be paid and indemnified, on account of various charges that after the demise

And has its source in the payment imputed to the named Bonk for 12 pieces of metal weights, in conformity with the resolution of this government of 2 July 1765, the extract of which is appended hereto under Litera J, on the grounds that those weights had already been missing for a long time, and specifically when Bonk was second warehouse master, and for that reason, at the transfer by the second warehouse master Lovenaar to his successor De Bordel dated 8 January 1761, under the responsibility of Bonk, who at that time was first warehouse master and as such also signed that transfer for co-responsibility, were declared known, see annex Litera A. The second entry of . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 413. 18. 30. Carried forward - - - pagodas 474. 9 7/8. arose from the known compensation imposed by Their High Excellencies, in conformity with their respected resolution of 30 August 1764 under Litera I, on account of the lesser yield of 30 1/2 percent on various accepted and dispatched unrequisitioned linens, to the number of 166 packages and amounting to 41683 florins 14 stivers 8 pennings, which was debited here by invoice of account dated Batavia 24 September 1764, see Litera K, to be reimbursed into the treasury by the Governor and Council, so that Bonk for his share had to participate in the aforesaid amount, since they were textiles that were dispatched with the ships De Vrouwe Geertruijda, Nieuw Nieuwerkerk, and Borsselen in the year 1763, the year in which he died, as can be seen in the cash book of August 1765; thus that amount could be paid from no other funds than from the auction proceeds of the estate of Bonk, although from which again Brought forward - - - - - - - - - pagodas 474. 9. 70. Consequently, no more was paid in that levy by the heirs of Bonk than pagodas 116. 10. 50, and the aforesaid returned amount was paid by her again, among others, to the curators and credited by the same Haselkamp in the account of the end of April 1768, see Litera M. The third entry of - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 317. -. -. is the loss incurred on the buyout cost of a quantity of 41280 lbs of old Persian copperware, which, upon the transfer made by Bonk as second warehouse master to his successor Fredrik Jan Lovenaar, for his Carried forward . . . . . . - . pagodas 791. 9. 74. Carried forward P/o. 913. 6. 7/8. found instead of recorded counts, length and width of various linens, all delivered by the merchants here, sent along from here in anno 1763 per the ships Borsselen, Sloterdijk and Kievitsheuvel, which, mentioned under Letter G in invoices of 1 February, 31 May and 10 June 1764, was charged to this gentleman for settlement by its collectors, but was placed on the account of the merchants by former Governor Van Teijlingen and the second David Coenraad Vick, but afterwards, pursuant to the resolution in the Council of Coromandel on 10 July 1765 under Letter H, the account of those traders was again released from it, in conformity with the warrant of the end of that same month and page 183 of the Journal, the aforementioned share of Bonk, which was paid by his daughter out of her father's monies, according to a receipt Letter S, having consisted of the following, namely: Carried forward pr /o. 913. 16. 7/8. namely: On account of the lesser value of 60 per cent of the aforementioned cambrics p/a. 10. 5. 20. and the lesser count, length and width 0. together as above pro/o. 122. 7. -. the aforementioned four dealt-with items thus amounting to 943: 16: 7/8 but whereupon, as is noted further along, there has been refunded 297. 7. 6 therefore these four items charged to Bonk import only p/o. 646. 9. 1/8 from all of which then appears very clearly the true source of the charges that fell to Bonk, and consequently had to be paid out of his estate of which his daughter had possession, all the more so since all those compensations were settled after his death, and in particular the positive order that it should be paid by the Governor and Council was only given in the year 1765 by Their High Noble Venerated Dispatch of 18 as said. Carried forward R:a 913: 6: 1/2 March March; regarding which it is still to be remarked that when all the decisions cited above were taken in the Council of Coromandel, Haselkamp was still a member of the Council and served the meeting as secretary until the 3rd of August of that year, and consequently drafted the resolutions thereof; surely it was then his duty to give notice that the auction proceeds of the widow Crucius had been accounted for by him; therefore, the assertion that he was innocent or ignorant in that regard, and that those monies were paid without hearing him, and that moreover out of his means, is merely fabricated, and thus all his objections and demonstrations in that regard collapse, proceeding upon which he has tried to obtain monies that are not due to him. Concerning the tenth item on the debit side of that account, or the 100 pagodas paid out of his estate, we refer ourselves with great respect to the decisions taken in that regard by the Government here on 28 February and 27 March 1766, both accompanying this in extract under Letter I, from which can be clearly traced: traced, the reasons which served as the foundation of the resolution, since Haselkamp, being the last receiver of the treasury, without making the slightest exception regarding the 150 pagodas running, among others, per memorandum in the name of the farmers, nor making any search in that regard whether there is a warrant or any other proof thereof; all the more so since that item for long years, or since the cashiership of the cashier Jan Martens D: until the end of January 1760, stood recorded under the cashier Paulus Looman as only 50 pagodas, but from the last-mentioned time was increased by 100 pagodas, without it having been possible to fathom the cause thereof, nor was there anyone who could provide any light or elucidation on it, much less Haselkamp himself, who on the order of this Government was expressly questioned and interviewed about it by the First Clerk, but was not able to provide any information in that regard: as is found dealt with at length in the aforesaid resolution of 27 March; consequently his position collapses position that the payment thereof was charged to him without being heard, thus without his knowledge; surely he cannot be ignorant of the fact that anyone who receives something must also inspect what he takes over, in order to be able always to render an account again, for it is very well known that an administrator in the Company's service, however minor his accounting is, may not take over, receive or deliver anything without being provided with a warrant; thus he can blame no one other than his own neglect and good faith that he had to pay that money. Concerning his further complaint that 7500 pagodas were paid from his furniture, mentioned in the 13th, 28th, and 31st items of the aforesaid account, on which account he demonstrates at length the deficit by the cashier Paulus Looman of Pagodas 12500. 13. 30 upon his death, and by Crucius upon transferring the treasury to him, Haselkamp, of P%o. 4658: and elaborates further upon the increase thereby of his debit to the treasury to Po/o 22158. 18. 30, demonstrating that the source

The debt of Paulus Looman amounted, according to the inventory of 22 April 1762, marked U, serving also as a transfer from the testamentary executors of his estate to the newly appointed Cashier Francois Crucius, to a sum of Pag/o 12258:18:60., toward the settlement of which debit seems to have been employed the following funds, known by a small unsigned note written by the clerk of the absconded Governor Christiaan van Teijlingen, named Philippus Franciscus Hasz, and handed over to Haselkamp, and produced by Haselkamp in the lawsuit; namely: The Dandar... . . From which it clearly appears that, this debt of Looman being settled, the transfer of the same in the books to the account of Haselkamp will have followed thereupon, in conformity with that which is treated on page 194 of the Journal of the year 1763/4, ergo not without his prior knowledge, for it is certain that that note, along with the greatest portion of the monies, will have been delivered into his hands in order to collect the missing amount to supplement that sum from the persons mentioned therein, or otherwise he would not have needed that note and it would also not have been in his possession; and if he did not collect all the funds mentioned thereon, he can blame no one other than himself; he who was already charged for it should also have been vigilant in order to gain possession of the monies assigned to him; thus through his silence no exceptions remained, as he has put forward in the lawsuit, that of those monies a sum of Pag/o. 1669: 18: 31., and now in the petition presented to Their Right Excellencies Pag/o. 2491:19: 4., turned out to be missing; which, if carelessness and inattention in that regard had not taken place, would have been discovered immediately at the next cash inventory that followed the aforementioned transfer of Looman's debit; namely: under the last day of February 1765, as then the great discrepancy between the remainder of the cash book and the funds in his possession must absolutely have been perceived; but it seems that he could not perceive the actual size thereof, as they were scattered far and wide and without any record, nor what was still truly missing, from where, and from whom it still had to come in; for otherwise it is impossible that one would not have been vigilant to bring it in as best as possible, unless negligence and heedlessness are the true cause of it, and the irregular proceedings resulting therefrom that took place concerning the said shortages, consequently all damages resulting therefrom had to fall back upon him, being the one from whom the accountability would be demanded. Upon examining the true state of the debit of Looman to the cash, many errors presented themselves in the inventory of 22 April 1762, already cited hereinbefore under Letter U, because among the memorandum funds as well as the cash found in existence, there were many considerable items where new were substituted for old pagodas, as evidenced by two receipts granted to the executors of Looman, and accompanying this under Letter V; for in the inventory there is transferred, both in memorandum funds and cash, pursuant to the transfer ordinance Letter 9: 9: granted to the Head Administrator on the date of the last day of April 1762, together Pag/o. 15555:22:20: and according to the receipts there were only handed over 15117: 17: 38: thus received in excess Pag/o 438. 4. 70. Consequently not finally balanced, and in the transfer of that arrear to the Cashier Haselkamp an error was made by taking the 12258 New pagodas for Old, thus giving, at around 7 per cent agio, a considerable difference of pagodas 908, which, added to the 429 pagodas stated as acknowledged in the entry of Campie over and above what he paid to Haselkamp, and through various other small entries, makes up the aforementioned difference of pagodas 1391. 17. 3; which can be imputed to nothing other than the inattention of almost all those who had a hand in the estate of the deceased Cashier Paulus Looman, and especially the Cashier Haselkamp, when he was instructed to collect the amounts stated on that note for the liquidation of the Cash, including among others the pagodas 560 and pagodas 175, together making pagodas 735. –. –, which he says he did not receive; yet those people, being the natives Coenjang Saruijkema, Wierappa Poele, [illegible], the shroff Arnassalam, and the kanakapulle of the Cashier Wiendijgom, mentioned among others in the statement formed by us, declare unanimously that they paid their debt to Governor Van Teijlingen, as do also the Persian writer and Lieutenant Heijntz; consequently it was 358 indeed the duty of Haselkamp to inquire into this and to inform the Governor of the non-receipt of those missing funds, who would then surely have assisted him therein, as it could not be unknown to Haselkamp that he was answerable for the debit of Looman by virtue of the transfer of the same, for why else did he need to take over the money from Looman's Executors upon receipt, and keep the auction moneys in his possession, were it not that all those same funds were intended for the liquidation of the Cash, and also served and were employed for that purpose; and even supposing that those funds or any of them had remained unpaid to him, it was indeed his own negligence that he did not make more effort toward the collection of the same, as has become evident regarding the moneys that were in the hands of the Executors of Looman, since he received 429 pagodas less from the same than was specified to him on that note by the former Governor van Teijlingen, all the more because those moneys, or rather pagodas 1391, were actually in the custody of the Executors, and by them

were also handed over to the curators appointed subsequently or in the year 1766, which, together with monies accrued since then from the credits of Looman amounting together to pro. 1103: 3. 49., having subsequently been delivered to the creditors of Looman, are no longer monies belonging to Looman. That carelessness regarding everything, and in particular regarding the entire affair of the estate of Looman with respect to the settlement of the cash balance, took place is indisputable, and serves as one of the proofs thereof a certain item of 320. pag: or the proceeds of one of the houses of Looman, sold under date 6 November 1762 among several goods, and bought by the former servant of van Teijlingen named Wienaijgom, under suretyship of the natives Waijtinada Chittij and Ogondaatjia Poele, but since, as can be seen from the auction roll, transferred to the name of the fellow native Moetoe Histna Condappa Naijker, which auction monies Haselkamp, among other things in his legal papers, says he also did not receive; but to whom must the non-receipt of those monies now be imputed, other than to himself, since he had enough time for it from 6 November 1762 or the day of the auction until August 1765, when he was placed under arrest, thus having let things slide for nearly three full years without collecting that money or taking coercive measures in hand to constrain the buyer to make payment, for he indeed admits himself that an auctioneer remains responsible for the auction monies immediately after the auction is held, how much more so then for these monies, which were partly assigned to him to serve towards the settlement of Looman's remaining debt transferred to him, Haselkamp, on the cash balance; and had Haselkamp been watchful in time, that man, before he became insolvent, would have been well able, or his patron and benefactor, the aforementioned executed servant of Van Teijlingen, would have provided him with the means to pay off that money, consequently the curators Bloeme and Buijs would not have had to be obliged, owing to his insolvency, to have that house auctioned anew on a judicial verdict, which then yielded no more than pro. 165. 1/2., which, along with an amount of Po. 95. 1/2. on account of other received auction monies that he had owed, making together Po. 261., was taken to the benefit of Haselkamp, while the deficit, or the lesser yield of that house, being pro. 154: 1/2., according to the political resolution of 20 January 1768, vide Lit. A: A:, the aforementioned sureties, who otherwise would have had to pay that missing amount, but on account of the clandestine transfer of the same to the name of Moetoe Histna Condappa Naijker without their prior knowledge, for whom they had not remained sureties, nor as such would have bound themselves for him, as recorded at length in that resolution, have been declared free from payment. That Haselkamp was ignorant regarding the debt of Looman, its liquidation, and its transfer onto him, can by no means be assumed, much less can belief be given to it, for he had that note in his possession, which was handed over to him so as to govern himself by it in the collection of the monies stated therein for the settlement of Looman's debt, which was also included under the remainder of the cash book, and if he could not effect the full payment thereof, he ought to have prevented, through timely notification thereof in the proper place, principally at the change of the Head Administration, the misfortune into which he has since fallen, which would have been a far more commendable conduct than now, after having allowed himself to be burdened through unprecedented silence, to complain that he had not received or obtained all the monies assigned to him, far less reason for complaints remaining for him because he signed each time, and indeed monthly, for the remainder of the cash book, not to mention the successive inventories taken once every six months, on which occasions he at least ought to have noticed that things were not in order with the monies under his accountability, therefore, however one turns or twists the matter, Haselkamp is and remains responsible in everything for the cash of Looman; Concerning now the cash balance under Francois Crucius, upon the transfer thereof to Haselkamp, if one goes by the statement of account and the transfer dated ultimo July 1763, marked F:, he remained owing nothing, at least it does not appear from it, although it is otherwise very well known that he also had to account for a considerable sum of pro 1658: 4. 49. to the cash, but the Honorable Company had nothing to settle regarding that with Crucius or his estate, since through the receipt of a private bond for it, and the signing by Haselkamp of the transfer without any exception in that regard, nor making any mention thereof, that debt passed immediately and directly to Haselkamp, thus he became a debtor of the Honorable Company, consequently he was the one who was obliged to make good the entire remainder of the cash without any

361 account for a shortage of a single duit, and also accordingly had to show and verify the funds, wherefore the aforementioned bond—which was only granted on 20 December 1763, thus nearly five months after the cash was transferred—cannot be taken into consideration; furthermore, it being an agreement between him and his predecessor Crucius that had subsisted with the foreknowledge and consent of Governor van Teijlingen, if the last-mentioned might have had knowledge of that deficit at the time of the transfer of the cash; Crucius then had to account for, according to what was recorded at that transfer, in new pagodas and fanums: p/o 17317. 9. 90, but according to a paper exhibited in the lawsuit by Haselkamp, he only brought in p/o. 7533. 9. 62, namely p/o. 6508. 9. 62 in diverse gold coin, and p/o. 1025 in duits, as appears in more detail below, to wit: Given to Mr. Haselkamp . . . . . . . . . p/. 6500. –. – shroff new pagodas . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1000. –. – his Honour's servant, new . . . . . . . . 500. –. – Carried forward . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . p/o. 8000. –. – Brought forward . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . p/o. 8000. –. – and To his Honour 3 bundles of fanums . . . 150. –. – in the hands of the Shroff . . . . . . . . . . 650. –. – p. 8800. –. – Against this paid by Mr. Haselkamp for my account . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2291. 14. 18 Remains . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . p. 6508. 9. 62 I must pay to his Honour 17191. 14. 30 from which deduct the remainder 6508. 9. 62 I still have to pay . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10683. 4. 48 of this in Duits . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1025. –. – P:o 9658. 4. 48 For which, as he says, by order of the Governor he took a bond, and upon the promise made to him that the transfer would stand guarantee for that debt, he signed without making any exception, but nonetheless had not complied with or had delayed the order to let the amount of that bond run secretly on the books of the treasury; for which he certainly will have had his particular reasons, whether not to expose and irritate the Governor for the sake of his nephew, or indeed the trust that he placed in the promises made to him; but had he wished to act with prudence in this matter, and properly look after his own interest, he should not have hesitated for a moment to observe that order; but how far this pretence of Haselkamp to let the amount of the bond run secretly on the books is to be credited, we gladly leave to the discerning judgement of Your Right Honourable, and many reasons arise to doubt whether he was indeed provided with such an order, especially when one considers the time that elapsed between the transfer and the granting of the bond; but be that as it may, one cannot deny, however, that Haselkamp once again exposed himself to too much hazard and made himself subject to unheard-of negligence, the more so if Crucius had happened to pass away 5 ½ to 6 months earlier than occurred, it being for the rest still a good thing that said debt, according to a note submitted by the curators, inserted into 362 the resolution of 2 May 1767, and also accompanying this under letter B: R:, has been satisfied except for an amount of 1417. 15. 60 pagodas, which can also be paid off out of 5278 ¾ rupees that are due to the deceased Bonk on account of a certain negotiation from the estate of the late Right Honourable Ceylon Governor van Eck, and the remittance of the same is to take place from there according to the revered order of Their High Mightinesses. Then, since all that was received from and for Haselkamp, and the counted amount of 1000 pagodas by his guarantors, by virtue of the decision of the Coromandel Government of 12 August 1766, see letter D: D:, was not sufficient to fully liquidate his deficit, wherefore the remainder, being 4200 p/o according to Their High Mightinesses' secret order to the Governor dealt with in the resolution of this Government of 5 and 20 September 1766, see letter C: C:, was supplemented from the remaining funds of the former Governor van Teijlingen, the aforementioned 363 amount of 5278 ¾ rupees and that which is still certain to be received from Haselkamp himself, specified by the curators in a note, see letter E: E:, also incorporated into the aforementioned resolution of 2 May 1768, to an amount of 1356. 2. 74 p/o; subject to the wiser opinion of Your Right Honourable, ought in our opinion to come and serve in favour of the guarantors and the estate of the said Governor van Teijlingen, since both, as said before, contributed an amount of 5200 p/o to supplement the deficit on Haselkamp's debit, all the more as the aforementioned former Governor van Teijlingen, due to diverse charges, is currently already a debtor to the Honourable Company for an amount of ƒ62303. 12. 8 Dutch money. For which purpose 641. 14. 70 p/o may also serve, remitted to Batavia to the sequester by a second bill of exchange dated 28 June 1768, of which further mention will be made below, being the surplus amount that remained on that side under the curators after Haselkamp's debt

owed to the Honorable Company was settled. Herewith therefore the entry of Crucius debit is concluded, and approaching the four last or the 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd debit entries of the account, being the paid amount of pa/o. 2584:12:11 for the account of the four renters, regarding which matter Your Honorable and Valiant Sir may please to know that Haselkamp, in his capacity as vendue master, by order of the former Governor van Teijlingen, sold some houses and further possessions of some of the renters due to their inability to produce the lease moneys, and also having collected some moneys from them; it could not be verified whether such had been credited to their benefit or not, owing to the absence of a proper account and elucidation, wherefore by resolution of this government of 27 March 1766, vide letter FF, the members of this assembly, the trade bookkeeper De Filliettaz and the adigar of this outer city Pietersz, were commissioned to make an exact investigation thereof, who thereupon, at the session of 2 June following, of which the extract accompanies this under letter GG, submitted an ample report of their proceedings and findings, from which it appears how Haselkamp acted with the proceeds of those sold possessions, and that the moneys counted into the treasury by the receiver Hoflager were funds brought in cash by the renters directly to the same in reduction of their arrears, thus not including the money from the vendue of the goods sold by Haselkamp, etc.; with demonstration therefore of what the renters had to claim from Haselkamp, and the reconciliation of their claims with the vendue book, very copiously dealt with in that resolution, to which we, in order not to lengthen this, refer with great respect, wherein Your Honorable and Valiant Sir may please find set down the reasons and motives upon which Haselkamp was held responsible for the entire amount of the sale of those possessions, after he was amply interrogated regarding the one and the other, and not condemned without a hearing, so that the same was transferred from his estate, which he had thereby enriched as his own, to the benefit of those renters into the Company's treasury, for although he says that those moneys were collected by the warrants of the receiver Hoflager, he can nevertheless not prove this; as vendue master he ought to have noted the payment thereof in the vendue book, and given notice thereof to the renters, as well as provided them with receipts to protect himself therewith, all the more because these are moneys that were paid into the treasury by a second person, namely the receiver, for the account of a third, to wit the renters. The notes to which Haselkamp appeals in his exoneration in that regard, the curators declare in good conscience not to have found in his estate, and it is otherwise very improbable that those moneys, as Haselkamp alleges, could have been collected by the warrants of the receiver and paid into the treasury; for we find the received vendue moneys, besides those of the widow Crucius, according to the curators' latest account of 22 August 1767, handed over by Haselkamp alongside his request, to amount to an important sum, namely CC pr/o. 3743.-; whereas the private individuals, according to their submitted claims on account of outstanding vendue moneys in the note of the private debts then at the charge of Haselkamp, do not amount to more than pr/o. 673.16.62, which being deducted therefrom, there still remains of received vendue moneys pagodas 3070.-, among which certainly the vendue moneys of the renters are also included, not counting the moneys from the vendues which he himself had already successively received from the messenger before his detention, so that, through the absence of any annotations or a proper vendue roll, etc., which might give some light as to which moneys have indeed and which have not been received, one has the utmost difficulty in verifying everything with that accuracy as it properly should be; the payment from his estate for the benefit of the renters pursuant to the resolution of 2 June 1766 consists then of the following, namely: From the renter Oetandiassa Moddeliaar, together with his sureties, on account of the movable and immovable goods sold per vendues of 13 January, 23 February, and 10 March 1764... ps 1260:1652:26. The fanams amount to: 46. 13. 54. Total: 467 pagodas, 13 fanams, 54 cash. Add thereto the tolls appropriated by Haselkamp for the account of this farmer, being 192 pagodas, 40 fanams, 8 cash, amounting to: 80 pagodas. Together: 547 pagodas, 14 fanams, 14 cash. Carried forward: 547 pagodas, 14 fanams, 14 cash, amounting to 1994. 21. 65. Of which has been paid into the Company's cash treasury in reduction of his arrears to the Honorable Company: 546. 14. 14. From auctioned lands of the farmer Waddemalleappra Poele amounting to: 250 pagodas, 32 fanams, 12 cash. From which must be deducted that which has already been taken in by Haselkamp in reduction of the farm lease money of the year 1763/4: 208. 8. 0. Remainder: 42 pagodas, 24 fanams, 12 cash. Which have been counted into the cash treasury by the curators in reduction of the outstanding farm lease money of this farmer: 43. 0. 12. Together as mentioned above: 584 pagodas, 12 fanams, 11 cash. From all of which, upon an exact investigation and inquiry, it cannot be found that these moneys have been paid twice, for nowhere does the same appear; on the contrary, Haselkamp acknowledges, during the trial upon the question put to him regarding this by the Fiscal on the date 19 November 1765, under Article 35: That the auction book had indeed been in arrears for several months, or since last December, on account of numerous businesses, but that he had always paid to everyone Brought forward: 517 pagodas, 14 fanams, 4 cash, amounting to 19421. 55. the 124 367 the amount due, and with respect to the farmers that the frequently mentioned former Governor Van Teijlingen had ordered him, the interrogated, to hold all the moneys from the sold real estate under him until all should have come in at once, so that they could be counted into the cash treasury all at once by a single warrant. Which statements also for the most part agree with what was produced and testified by the farmers, except only that Haselkamp says that he fell in arrears with the auction rolls from December 1764 onward, whereas the auctions of the farmers' goods and possessions were held partly on 13 January, 23 February, and 10 March 1764, thus left unsettled for nearly a year and a half, furthermore contradicting his aforementioned statements upon a further interrogation regarding this made to him on 18 April 1766 by testifying that all the moneys received from the auctions of the farmers were drawn in by warrant of the receiver, without producing any other acceptable proof. Thus Thus these moneys were properly and rightfully paid out of his estate, for that the effects of the farmers were sold by him is evident from the auction roll, but that he satisfied or accounted for those proceeds either to the farmers or to others is evident nowhere, neither by a note under the auction roll, nor by receipts as ought to have been done, nor by an order from the Governor to transfer those moneys into the Company's cash treasury, and thus everything that Haselkamp writes about it is merely an assertion without proof, it being well known what credence is given thereto, and especially in an administrator or cashier of the Company's moneys. The affair of the farmers having hereby been handled as briefly as possible, it now remains to show to Your Right Honorable what the said Haselkamp, at the auditing of the cash treasury that was under his responsibility and the transfer of the same, see Letter HH, to the provisionally appointed cashier Dirk Vrijmoet, actually remained indebted to the Honorable Company; having to that end: 368 end formed an accurate account from the Cash Book and Trade Book, which we have the honor to present to Your Right Honorable under Letter II, according to which he remained heavily indebted to the Honorable Company: 1741 pagodas, 13 fanams, 10 cash. And if one wishes to include therein the deficit accounted for Loomans's arrears, although the non-receipt thereof was caused solely by the negligence of Haselkamp, being: 1391. 17. 3. yet Haselkamp's debit would then still amount to: 16019 pagodas, 20 fanams, 7 cash. From which again deduct the remaining debit of the deceased Crucius, although the same largely remains for the account of Haselkamp and is stated here only to show how much Haselkamp fell short aside from that, the said remaining debt amounting to: 6880. 0. 0. so that Haselkamp's shortage would then still amount to a considerable sum falling due of: 9139 pagodas, 20 fanams.

Thus, the assertion made by him that it has never been shown that he remained in arrears to the Hon. Company for a single duit, nor that he was ever condemned to the payment of any deficit, falls entirely to the ground, clearly demonstrating that he made use of untruths, and thereby sought to give Your Right Honours an entirely different impression than was consistent with the true state of the matter. For further clarification and in compliance with what was recommended, we further present to Your Right Honourable under Letter KK another drawn-up separate account to demonstrate how far his deficit at the Cash Office has been settled from his own means and outstanding credits; namely: The proceeds from the sale of his goods and collected debts amount to . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . pr/o. 5836. 20. 31. It being evident from this that Haselkamp's estate was by far not sufficient to fully liquidate his debit to the Hon. Company, so that one was compelled, for the full settlement of the aforementioned remaining debit balance, according to an account also annexed hereto under Letter LL, to employ the following funds; namely: The amount counted out by the Curators from the collected auction moneys . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . pa/o. 155. 7. 79. The amount paid from the estate of the former Governor van Teijlingen according to the resolution of the Coromandel Government dated 20 7ber 1766: see annex hereto Letter CC . . . . 200. –. –. R rao 5467:19:7 Balance of the Account Letter KK . . . . r/. 5467. 197¾. Regarding the item of the payment from the estate of Van Teijlingen, we must still note here that Haselkamp, shortly before his absence from here, handed over to the same, as payment or rather reduction as he imagined of the auction moneys of the goods already sold and still to be sold by him, a sum of 2000 New Nagapatnam Pagodas, or [illegible] 1851. 20. 36. And that notwithstanding he claimed to have such a considerable claim of Pa/o. 11579. 15. 60. on Van Teijlingen. However, those auctioned goods which were again credited to Haselkamp on the current account of the Curators amount to only . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1656. 16. 61. Thus Haselkamp would still fall short po 145. 3. 55. Haselkamp declaring that he provided the aforementioned auction moneys from the funds of the Hon. Company, which not only is not permitted to happen, but also serves as a new proof of negligence that he handed over more than his auction roll amounts to; yet in case it might please Your Right Honourable, upon receipt of moneys in favour of Haselkamp, to have the same transferred to the credit of the 4200 Pagodas employed from Van Teijlingen's estate, the aforesaid overpaid amount of pa/o. 145. 3. 55. could then be deducted, or indeed be validated out of the aforementioned furnished 4200 Pagodas, in which case Van Haselkamp would run in debit to the estate of Van Teijlingen for no more than Pagodas 4004. 20. 25. — The debit of Haselkamp to the Petty Cash, and how far the same has been diminished from his own means and collected credits, and what funds have further been taken and employed towards its full liquidation, together with what the same currently still remains in debit per balance, having been shown as clearly as was possible from the aforementioned accounts Letters KK and LL, we proceed to demonstrate what moneys [illegible] is

collected by the curators, and what has been paid out from it again. Consequently, we respectfully present to Your Right Honourable a statement drafted thereof, marked M:M:; in accordance with which we state briefly below that the curators have collected from outstanding vendue monies a sum of pa. 6348. 10. 8. and that paid out from it amounts to - - - - - - 6347. 10. 8. so that there still remains under their responsibility p. 1. –. –. Under the aforementioned paid amount is also included that which was collected after the cash had been liquidated with the funds of van Teijlingen and the guarantors, and which was also counted into the cash by the curators, in order to be remitted by bill of exchange to Batavia in accordance with the venerated order of Their High Mightinesses regarding the penal writ obtained by Haselkamp and dispatched here, as was also done according to the note made herebefore, being p/o. 687: 8: 38. or, after the deduction of 4 percent discount, p/o. 641. 14. 70. — Just as among the collected vendue monies there is also the proceeds of the goods sold for the account of van Teijlingen amounting, as cited herebefore, cited herebefore, to pagodas 1656. 16. 61. for which Hasilkamp paid from the funds of the Honourable Company to an amount of 2000 New pagodas; consequently, he will have used the vendue monies that had been held by him or collected by himself in return towards the partial expenditures from the Company's petty cash; thus it was all the same whether he provided the Company's or indeed the actual vendue monies to van Teijlingen, to whom after all more was delivered by him than the vendue amounted to; we have therefore had to leave the same among the collected vendue monies in our drafted account, because out of that could be paid again the arrears of vendue monies of Haselkamp to various leaseholders, which were also the Company's funds; besides many other expenses. In like manner also stood, and was employed for that same purpose, the amount paid out of the estate of Winaijg to an amount of p/o. 1269. 12. —. , and that received from the native Moetoe Kistna Condappa Naijker, or p/o. 261. 9. 58. To which I add the aforementioned monies received in the past year after the liquidation of the cash and remitted among others to Batavia by bill of exchange, in order, if it might please Your Right Honourable, to request from Their High Mightinesses the return and crediting thereof back here, to be handled here, both to the benefit of the guarantors and the account of Van Teijlingen . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 641. 14. 70. the amount to be received in favour of Haselkamp then amounting to - - - - - - - . . . . . . . 3079. 17. 44. We also submit herewith, under letter O:O:, an exhibit showing how far the debit of the deceased Francois Crucius regarding Haselkamp will be liquidated when the funds from Ceylon shall have been received, according to which Crucius's widow will then still remain indebted for an amount of pa/o 224. 4. - Just as we finally also offer to Your Right Honourable under letter P:P: a note of such private debts as the said Haselkamp made and left behind here, according to proofs thereof, amounting in general to p/o. 10652: 12. 2.
