The 30 January Register of the Marginal Notes placed upon such Resolutions as shall be found herewith at the below-mentioned Dates and Folios, beginning 8 January and ending the January 8 January, specification of the Broach Factor Heijdeman concerning gifts at the paying of visits. Folios 1. And a ditto of his journey upcountry Approved. 2. While the additional 45 rupees entered are also passed. 3. For the repair of the Broach Lodge, to disburse 250 rupees in advance from the Company treasury, to be deducted from the annual rent. 3. The specification of Huijsinga concerning gifts given upon his departure from Broach, and one concerning travel expenses, approved. 4. However, the 14 rupees and 8 annas enjoyed in excess by him at Broach to be refunded and credited to the said Office. 5. To inform the Bombay ministry regarding the debt of James Stevens, that no answer has yet been received from England. 5. It is understood to await the same. 7. Projected annual gift for Broach, less than last year by 33 florins, 5 stivers, 8 penningen, and 100 florins, 8 stivers at sales value, 8. to let it be sent with de Jonge Petrus, and therewith to allow the family of the First Factor to be ferried over. 11. Jan David Drabbe engaged in service as hooploper at 7 florins. A soldier raised from 9 florins to 11 florins. To inform the Broach Factor of the receipt of the presentation goods. In view of the bad condition of the revetment of the Wharf 28. and of the railing standing around it, 29. approved to have the first plastered and whitewashed, and the second entirely renewed. 30. The Honorable Company graves having only 756 florins, 15 stivers, 8 penningen to their credit, and not being able to be maintained from the collections etc., and repairs having to be done thereto, to request Their High Mightinesses that the monies generated from the manumission of slaves may be used for that purpose. 31. To appoint the members Van der Sleijden and Huijsinga as Orphan Masters. 5 February, deliberation over the letter and enclosures received with de Jonge Lieve. 32. The 13th of July With respect to the stoppage brought upon the new buildings, the Director has left nothing undone for the recovery of the permission once granted, the deceased Mr. Reijlij having personally inspected those buildings and written favorably about it to Bombay; yet that council persisting in its resolution, notwithstanding that one had held firm hope that the continuation of the timber constructions would have been allowed to us, and the Surat council being able to find reason for this obstruction, it appears that Mr. Hodges, whom even the English blame for this, intends to maintain his undertaking. And whereas some dwellings are no longer habitable, the Director submits for deliberation: 1st, whether one should request from the English the construction of bamboo dwellings filled with earth, or rather wait a while with that; 2nd, how one should answer the last received letter; it is, for the reasons alongside, resolved to make 2 bamboo houses filled with earth and a plank ceiling and stone base; yet instead of the uninhabitable house of the Head Surgeon, to request permission to rebuild the same in stone, provided the granted and revoked permission is left in statu quo. And with respect to answering the letter, resolved to send a detailed missive to Bombay. The Director is thanked for the trouble taken in this matter, and is requested to handle it further. In purchasing plots outside the yard for lodging for the crew members, the Director has succeeded with three houses, yet in the name of the Modi and on the Company's account, the Modi having already advanced over 600 rupees for that purpose, and 1 to 2 plots still being required, the further advance disbursement to the Modi is left referred to the Director. Satisfied with a Broach letter, a transfer to the Second Major, and a specification of traveling expenses; and the specification approved. 10,000 rupees have been disbursed to the suppliers. The general muster is accomplished, and the persons alongside are taken into service as soldiers at 12 guilders. The 16th of August Desertion of the sergeant and stable master Marks, yet the horse and chaise taken along by him from the dispenser Monté have been returned upon strong insistences. The 30th of January, Year 1770. Rupees, must deliver the letter of the undersigned Director to the prince Madurauw. He shall have to request from the prince, in the strongest and most appropriate terms, the return of the narrow-boat De Mosselschulp. To that end he shall have to present to the prince how unjustly the same was attacked and wrested from us, since one had trusted in his word, whereby he had promised not to attack our vessels, and had also forbidden the Governor of Bassijn from doing so, and that his own honor is therefore at stake in correcting this act of violence and injustice. 6. Upon this, Aref will have to hear what they answer; if the return is promised, Aref must insist that it then be sent back at once. And from this he must not deviate, unless he sees that all persuasions are in vain. After which he must try to make another arrangement to get the narrow-boat here, even if one were to pay the costs of bringing it hither, provided that these were set at a certain sum and did not amount to more than 500 Rupees or slightly more. Furthermore, he shall have to act in this regard as the opportunity and the circumstances of the time shall permit. 10th. Yet not conclude or agree except upon the approval and sanction of the Director. If the prince unexpectedly should still make any demand for money for the return of the narrow-boat, Aref shall have to hear how much that would at least be, and make a report thereof. Subsequently Aref will have to insist, first of all, upon a written order to the Governor of Bassijn and to the commander of His Highness's sea armada, to let our ships henceforth pursue their voyage unhindered whenever they show the issued passes, without doing them the least harm, 18th. and he shall also try to obtain a similar assurance in writing from the Prince himself, to be preserved here. 19th. He shall subsequently request a certain number of passes or safe-conduct letters, up to a number of 50 to 100 pieces, or as many more as he shall be able to obtain. 20th. The Curator Ad lites, sequester, and all those who have any management or administration over estates of deceased persons, must account for those estates without delay and transfer the moneys yielded therefrom to the Netherlands. Extract Resolution of 27 August 1769. from the estates of deceased persons not being insolvent, payments may be made by the Curator Ad lites, in so far as their estate 36.
