Furthermore, there was also submitted for resumption by the repeatedly mentioned Honorable Chief Administrator in his capacity as trade bookkeeper the statement of accounts of this Directorate as of the ultimate of August last; which paper having been read with the required attentiveness, one found the brief contents thereof to be. 50 The 19th of February Ao. 1770 to contain chiefly the following; namely: 1. That this office now, in comparison to the previous financial year, appears to have fallen behind by ƒ 367,606:8:8. Though taken on its own, it has previously advanced by a small amount of ƒ 25,204:15:8. 2. That the profits calculated in the Memorandum of Management at ƒ 867,000: —:—, which, now reduced by a fifth, were to amount to ƒ 693,600: —:—, with which the profit account was closed this year, which now stands at only ƒ 129,517:14:8, therefore less: ƒ 564,082:5:8. Of which the principal cause is that this year one was forced to weigh out to the merchant for about ƒ 700,712:—:— in goods, the profits on which amounted to ƒ 400,264:6:8, very mistakenly already entered into the profit account of the Honorable Company in Ao. 1766/7 and 1767/8. The 19th of February Anno 1770 amounts together to ƒ529782:8:—. there would still have been gained more than in the previous financial year, when the same amounted to ƒ486541:14:8, gained: ƒ43240:6:8. which is to be attributed to the larger collection of sugar up to a quantity of 1238304 lb than on average in the 5 previous financial years, which profits would easily have been increased if, as previously, the requested quantity of Japan bar copper had been provided, in which case the true profits of this financial year would have amounted to ƒ628666:1:—, which according to the previous monetary calculation would amount to ƒ785832:11:—. II. That the expenses fixed by the aforementioned Memorandum of Management amount to ƒ119500:—:—, which, calculated in Dutch money or according to the current value, renders ƒ95600:—:—. And the same now amount to ƒ104312:19:—. Thus more than the fixed allocation: ƒ8712:19:—, which increase is primarily to be attributed to some extraordinary carpentry work and repairs, etc. III. IV. That the gross profits amount to ƒ155701:18:—, against which the losses and write-offs amount to ƒ26184:3:8, leaving over for the net profits a meager capital of ƒ129517:14:8. V. That the previous year's account was balanced with a bad balance of ƒ89209:9:8. VI. That by three ships there was brought in here in total ƒ488685:16:—, and sent away again therewith ƒ666675:6:—, thus sent away more than brought in: ƒ177989:10:—. VII. That the entire sales have yielded ƒ191875:4:—, purchase cost therefore: ƒ40053:7:—, and thus net gained 379 per cent or ƒ151821:17:—. VIII. The higher incurred expenses being added to the lower displayed profits, this office would now appear to have fallen behind, in comparison with the previous financial year, by ƒ367606:8:8. If one now for a moment follows the previous method of calculating profit, as was first put into practice here by the Resolution of the 31st of December 1764 and subsequently constantly followed until the 11th of March last, consisting of this: that out of a mistaken supposition that it would give an improper representation in the profit account if the merchandise were traded on the trade books according to the time of weighing out and delivery, it was deemed fit to declare to the brokers under that date all the merchandise remaining on hand under the ultimate of August as weighed out to them, and to debit them for those amounts in the books, notwithstanding that the merchandise remained lying in the warehouses at the risk of the Honorable Company and was also not paid for by the buyers until after collection; and from which it then followed that each year one brought forward a false representation of substantial profits, no remaining stocks, and very large debtors, then one would have to say: on the goods sold at this office in this financial year, the profit gained is ƒ 432876: —: 8. as appears from the following demonstration: on the goods weighed out to the brokers and paid for by them, there was gained, as stated above, ƒ 129517:14:8. Yet against this it being taken into consideration not only that the same was longer than the Batavier by 11½ and than the Verwagting by 4½ feet, wider than the first by 4¼ and than the second by 3: and deeper than the first mentioned by 3¼ and than the last mentioned by 2 feet, but also that the difference in what either keel can carry was so great, at least with regard to the Verwagting and the Jonge Petrus, that where the first cannot carry more than 170: cannasters of sugar, with which it then still draws as much as 9¾ feet, and therefore because of the shallowness of the Surat river often must remain loading along the way for weeks, the latter, when loaded, can take in as many as 408 cannasters, with which it then still only draws 8: feet, while the costs of the Jonge Petrus are markedly increased by the greater amount spent thereon from stores, being rop=s 2577:42, caused by the provisions made to the Verwagting of such 84 The 19th of February Anno 1770. And having subsequently taken into consideration, firstly, that the aforementioned small vessel De Verwagting, although very solidly and strongly built, is nevertheless of very little utility here, both in the unloading and loading of the ships, because ballasted it draws a full 7½ feet of water and cannot carry more than 170 candies of sugar, with which it can easily draw 9¾ feet of water, as that noted in the resolution of the . . . . that said small vessel loaded a full 314 candies did not occur otherwise than after it had beforehand been emptied of all its ballast, which however to do on a continuous basis 92. The 19th February Anno 1770. and such a vessel being required on the Malabar To request Their High Excellencies to send the same would be of far too great expense for the Company, while on the contrary the newly built small vessel De Jonge Petrus with the necessary ballast draws 5½ feet of water and with a cargo of 408 candies only 8 feet, and thus is of infinitely greater utility in the unloading and loading, while both in case of defense are equal to the aforementioned Verwagting. And secondly that the last-mentioned keel, being solidly and strongly built and moreover possessing a good defense, would be very good and of the required service on the Malabar, where according to the ministers' advices of the 10th May 1769, through the sale of the sloop De Johanna Catarina, another vessel might well be needed, as the inconvenience of the shallowness of the river, for which reason it cannot well be used here, does not exist there. The 13th February Anno 1770 The smalschip De Verwagting has departed for Brootchia and a letter received from there announcing that Brootchia is besieged and a request for relief in money By a further letter they give notice of the impediment in sending the goods departed for Brootchia to collect returns. And that on the said date a letter was received from the factors there, wherein they make known that General Fattesing lies encamped 18 cors from Brootchia with 4 to 5,000 men to besiege that city, those factors further making a request to be accommodated with a small relief in money for the payment of daily expenses, upon which it was resolved to order them by outgoing letter to report as before the state of the Company's cash there. That on the 27th of February a further letter was received from Brootchia wherein the officials report the arrival of the boat from the smalschip De Verwagting, as well as that just as they were ready to load the Honorable Company's goods into small craft to be conveyed to the aforementioned smalschip, they were informed by the Company's broker that 2 to 300 men of the enemy were lying along the riverbank to prevent any craft from coming down the river, wherefore the said factors 96. 104. The 13th of March Anno 1770. It appears that the same are entirely irreparable and uninhabitable. Moedi Mannik Dada, and two native house carpenters, who have likewise signed this, proceeded to the residences of the secretary van Citters, junior merchant de Vassij, First Sworn Clerk Wiarde, and the Bookkeeper van Swijndrecht, all under one roof, being the so-called Old Director's Residence, as well as to the residence of the chief surgeon van der sprenkel, and there inspected and examined in the closest detail the state in which the said dwellings currently find themselves. Whereupon it became fully apparent to them that the aforesaid buildings, which at the survey for the General Conveyance dated 2 December 1768 were declared to be generally very dilapidated, sagging heavily, and consequently requiring total renewal, as it was already then to be feared that they would one day bury their inhabitants, are not only, in accordance with the aforesaid sworn statement, in a state very dangerous to their inhabitants, but have even since that time, or during a good year, altered so much that they now seem ready to collapse at any moment, whether by a strong wind, or by the shaking of the ground when on occurring occasions the cannon is discharged at the Company's wharf. The so-called Old Director's residence furthermore runs the danger of suffering the same fate whenever any vibrations are caused to it merely by the rolling or moving of the casks in the dispensary, which is immediately beneath it. On which account they, the undersigned special commissioners, having also informed themselves regarding the above through the aforesaid Master Attendant as well as the Company's Moedi and both native carpenters, have found that the frequently cited residences could not be inhabited without danger of collapse and accidents, and even that they cannot be remedied by any repairs, but must be completely rebuilt; which they are prepared to confirm under solemn oath at all times if required. The 13th of March in the Year 1770. year 1769 we were honored with Your Honor's most respected missive of the 5th, prior to which it was not possible for us, on account of multiple other businesses, to answer the same immediately, wherefore we presently request permission to remark thereon, that, far from being able to agree that Your Honor's missive of 3 October of the past year would contain a full defense of their conduct regarding the halting of the carpentry of our new dwellings, whereto Your Honor previously granted so solemn a consent, we must once more testify to have been unable to perceive anything from Your Honor's aforementioned missive that can justify this undertaken halting with any semblance of right, as we most clearly demonstrated in our subsequent missive of 8 October 1769, while the point advanced by Your Honor in your last letter, namely that our application to the Nabab for permission to continue these buildings would show that the same buildings have as much relation to the city as to the castle, is of no consequence, seeing that we only applied to the Nabab after we had previously obtained a solemn consent from Your Honor in the capacity of Governor of the Mogol's Castle, upon whom the granting of this permission is incumbent, and one cannot regard him as the cause of this hindrance, since after Your Honor had impeded our progress with the carpentry he remained quiet for at least 5 months before sending us any message regarding this, which at last occurred on the very same day when we had the honor to receive Your Honor's last letter concerning this subject, which is truly remarkable, nor does it matter for the cause that the Honorable Governor and Council of Bombay would be dissatisfied with these buildings, as we obtained permission thereto according to Your Honor's own full-mouthed consent, and of which we must firmly establish that Your Honor would never have granted it to us had you not judged yourself authorized thereto; so that, gentlemen, our registered protests, which Your Honor may please not to take amiss that we adhere to once again herewith, are not absurd and ridiculous, as Your Honor might wish to pretend; while the revocation of Your Honor's once-given permission has provided us with well-founded reasons thereto, just as, however ridiculously one seems to wish to treat it, we would gladly leave the same to the decision of the whole world, and although we have double reason to make similar unfitting remarks in this regard, we prefer to avoid them, as they are little becoming among friends and allies; and we especially request Your Honor, as there is currently a Captain Engineer present at hand here, to be pleased to have him examine: Firstly, the carpentry of the new buildings, and whether the same can be said with any semblance of reason to be detrimental either to the Mogol's Castle or to the city. Secondly, in like manner to inspect our old dwellings here, in order to investigate whether the same, at least for the most part and in such manner, can be inhabited, and whether the inhabitants thereof run no danger of being buried under these old, dilapidated, and entirely irreparable dwellings, as is indeed the case with the secretary van Citters, junior merchant Vassij, first sworn clerk Wiardi, bookkeeper Swijndrecht, and chief surgeon van der Sprenkel; as appears from the inspection newly performed again by 3 members of our assembly, assisted by expert persons, and of which report we have the honor to offer Your Honor a copy.
