Journal kept by 2 mates Pieter Matheijssen Astrop and Jan Feechs on the Honourable Company's hooker De Snelheid concerning the loss of the boat and yawl on the coast of Africa the 15 July 1778, having departed from Cape of Good Hope to complete our voyage in the name of the Lord to search for 2 of the Honourable Company's ships that were missing in St. Augustine's Bay on Madagascar or also in Delagoa Bay, the ships named the Fijland the one and the other Rotting. Arrived thus safely in St. Augustine's Bay, but found none of our aforementioned ships there, but learned there that the Honourable Company's hooker De Zon lay at Toliara. Furthermore we lay there 24 hours to fetch water and firewood. When we had our water and firewood, departed from there to continue our voyage further to Delagoa Bay. 354 The 5th of November A:o 1771. On the findings regarding the trade books of the year 1767/8. We took our way along the beach; we had nothing to eat and drink; thus we walked along the beach for 4 days. Then we could walk no longer for exhaustion. Then we scraped a hole in the sand and lay down in it, praying to God that He would preserve us from the terrible wild beasts. Then we covered ourselves with sand, but did not sleep that night on account of pain and the sound of terrible wild beasts that circled around us. At daybreak we resumed our journey. At sunrise we came to a river, which is called in Portuguese Rio de Douro. There was a king on the south side of the river; he wanted to kill us all, but God willed it otherwise, for there came a king from the other side of the river, who took us away from the other by force and brought us across the river; there we saw our hooker for the last time. Further, we thus traveled through the country with great anguish and severe pain; the one could not help the other. When we had traveled about 20 days, 2 more passed away there; then we were still 10 persons, but we could scarcely walk. Did however finally arrive at last at the Portuguese post on the 25th of September 1770, which is called Tambani. The governor's name is Ian de Custe Sawiel. There they treated us very well. On this trip 2 men died, 2 died Roman Catholics and 1 became a soldier, and one man remained as a servant to the governor. Could not get away from there before the 27th of June 1771. Yet, since two of our ships are now ready to sail, and one of them, bearing our return cargo which is already entirely prepared in our tent, can impossibly be detained any longer without saving our Company from considerable damage and disadvantages, we find ourselves obliged hereby to insist most urgently upon your Honour, in your capacity as Governor of the Mogol's Castle and Fleet, to the end of obliging the Nabab that His Excellency cause the return cargo prepared by us for these first two ships to be cleared through customs and stamped according to the old customs, in order subsequently to be shipped off by us, whilst we declare ourselves prepared to settle this affair of the outward duties according to equity, and to make such arrangements concerning it as may serve to reassure those entitled to the duties with respect to fraud, and to preserve our privileges.
