Having duly received Your Right Honours' highly respected separate dispatch of the 12th of May of this year with the arrival of the return ship Alkemade, we express in respectful reply to it first of all our dutiful gratitude for Separate. the approval of our actions, both with relation to the Moor Achamadoe Alichan, who appeared here as an envoy of the regent of the Great Prince of the Marathas, who having recently returned here and having also brought another person named Sadasuwarauw under the pretext of being an uncle of the regent of the said prince of the Marathas, Maddawarauw, upon his made request that he had again important matters to negotiate and propose, was dismissed by the undersigned Governor without granting a hearing, as the aforementioned encounter, from which not the slightest consequences followed, sufficiently demonstrates that he can be regarded as nothing other than a vagabond, and the situation in which he presently found himself confirmed this even more, as 340 well as with regard to what occurred at the factory of Jaggernaikpoeram, with the seizure of a vessel with tamarind that was provided with a proper letter of safe conduct or passport of the French, and concerning which the ministry of that nation at Pondicherry made a complaint to us, or rather concerning the infraction which they maintained had thereby been committed against their privileges. Just as we in the same manner attest our gratitude for the approval of what was done with regard to the dire circumstances in which the Prince of Tanjore found himself, and the loan of money in the amount of 80,000 new Nagapatnam Pagodas, requested by him with great urgency and eagerness, and granted upon the pledge of jewels that are worth incomparably more, at an interest of one percent per month. While in continuation of that delicate affair we respectfully bring to Your Right Honours' knowledge by this that the advance of money of another 25,000 pagodas, already also approved in Your Right Honours' aforementioned dispatch, under mortgage of the provinces of Kivalur and Trivalur sorting under the subahdarship of Mannargudi, of which the annual revenues were estimated at 9 lakh pardaws, which was pending at the dispatch of our respectful letter of the 15th of January of this year, and is stated in full in the separate resolutions dated the 4th, 15th, and 21st of November of last year, at that time had no follow-up, as we had the honor to inform Your Right Honours of the same in our respectful separate letter dated the 30th of June last, a copy of which respectfully accompanies this, 341 on the grounds that the prince had in the meantime satisfied the Subahdar of Arcot, His Excellency Muhammad Ali Khan, for that moment with the sums of money collected through the heavy contribution imposed on his subjects, and had flattered himself that he would thereby remain free of all further harassments and nuisance until the time that the next crop had been harvested and his revenues from it had been gathered, had then not been at all inclined and had been far too proud to place such a strict mortgage upon his lands as was prescribed in the draft bond drawn up by us and sent to the court, since he maintained that the same would tend to the disparagement of his Highness, but that of the 80,000 pagodas advanced upon the pledge of the jewels, on behalf of the prince, by the Navarese Havildar and Subah of the provinces of Mayavaram and Mannargudi, Kanakasabhai Pillai, who is now in great credit at the court and stands in the glowing favor of His Highness, a sum of 20,000 pagodas has already been repaid, and this in reduction of the last pawn of 30,000 pagodas, of which the remaining 10,000 was also completely ready, and had even been partially in this city, so that we reasonably flattered ourselves that His Highness would not trouble us for further loans of money, and would always have remained as fastidious and cautious concerning the mortgaging of his lands as he had been when we sent the aforesaid draft of the bond to the court, and that we thus would not have come into the necessity of making use of Your Right Honours' authorization, contained in the secret dispatch to the

addressed to the undersigned Governor, dated 31 December of the past year, and the resolution of the 24th of that month sent therewith, containing orders to advance up to another f 200000 to the prince in case he might come to need it. Yet we have to our regret been forced to experience the contrary, since His Highness, according to what was recorded in our separate resolution of 22 August last, having had an application made both by a letter written by the administrator Narsinga Ghaderauw on his orders according to custom, as well as by the aforementioned Cannagasawea Poele, who was the deliverer thereof and charged with that commission, demonstrating the urgent necessity in which he found himself for money in order to contribute to the aforementioned Subah Mahometh Alichan the sum stipulated in the peace treaty, and thereby to remain free from the continuous, brutal harassments on the part of the emissaries placed for that purpose in the principality by His Excellency, especially the inhoor Goelam Alijchan who had already obliged His Highness to surrender to him the provinces of Maijoeram and Combagonam, in order to let their products serve towards the deduction of the contracted monies, and to pledge a large part of his other lands under the name of private persons in fact to the English, or to such as depend on them, to the end that the sums borrowed upon them might also serve for the partial satisfaction of the Subah, and more other reasons cited in the aforementioned resolutions, and argued at length and with great emphasis by the envoy, to take in pledge the province of Kiwaloer, or the lands to be found therein, consisting of eight mahanams or divisions, which according to statement would yield 154000 patd.s annually in revenues, but were considered by us, to be secure, at no higher than 100000 ditto, making fully 41000 pagodas, and to advance a lakh of rupees upon it, we found ourselves, on account of the motives contained in those resolutions, well compelled to agree to this, however reluctantly and however little it otherwise suits the Honourable Company to advance such important sums as loans, and thus to provide upon it 35000 new Nagapatnam pagodas, which make slightly more than 100000 rupees, as well as to return the aforementioned 20000 pagodas already paid upon the jewels, if one did not wish to see with good eyes that the English, who had already advanced money on the province of Trinaloer, would also make off with this district and take possession there, as has already happened in the first-mentioned provinces, since in that case we would be completely enclosed by the British in the principality of Tanjore, and they will not fail, though friends in appearance, to cause the Honourable Company all possible obstacles, for which they could then, if they are masters of the lands situated so close to this city, find manifold occasions, and even hold up under various pretexts and divert elsewhere the water needed for the Company's villages that must come down from the country, which would cause not only daily perpetual disputes, but also the infertility of our aldeas due to the lack of the necessary water, and besides that would cause incalculable hindrances in the service of the Honourable Company at this place, all of which are cited at length in the aforesaid resolutions, and to which we therefore respectfully refer to avoid a duplicate account. Apart from and besides this weighty point, we had to embrace that offer all the sooner, not only to obtain from the revenues of those lands the 80000 pagodas advanced upon pledge of the jewels, since from the discourses held by the said envoy Cannagasarrea Poele and the dismal circumstances in which that principality finds itself, it has appeared not obscurely that His Highness finds himself in great inability to repay the money borrowed upon the jewels in the first years other than from the products of his lands, for even though the pledges are sufficient enough, it will nevertheless cause nothing but dissatisfaction if one seeks to sell the same to obtain the monies of the Honourable Company, whereas on the contrary, by enjoying the incomes of the pledged provinces, one can arrive at the money that your Honours have advanced in a more facile and less offensive manner, the more so because in the mortgage bond executed by Cannagasawea Poele and confirmed with the seal of the administrator, it is stipulated that the Company's flags shall be planted there and the revenues shall be collected by people placed there on our behalf, but paid at the expense of the Duan, and the inhabitants thereof have also bound themselves in writing to contribute now to the Honourable Company that which they are obliged to yield to the prince, wherewith it is also stipulated in the bond that all the borrowed money with the interest shall be repaid in two years.

Right Honorable Strict Lord, We have the honor dutifully to inform your Right Honorable Strictness herewith that, a few days ago, an English surveyor arrived here in the village, who, during a visit he paid to the first undersigned, made known that he had been employed by the Government of Madras to survey properly the lands which had been given in this region to the English by the Nabob as a jagir, and to make a map thereof. Subsequently speaking about the condition of those lands, he asked how far the right of the Dutch Company extended over the jurisdiction of Palliakatte, whereupon the first undersigned requested to know from him whether he asked that question with any authorization from the Government, and having received the answer that he had no orders whatsoever for it, but only inquired out of mere curiosity, the undersigned chief restricted himself to telling him solely that the Company enjoyed half of the dues, and from ancient times possessed the right to an open roadstead and trade. Upon his departure, he requested, if it were not disagreeable to the first undersigned, that he might give orders to his people to measure two or three streets in the town the following morning, in order thus to be able to fill in with some detail an open space which the outline of Palleakatte made on his map, which the undersigned chief, considering that the Company had not the least authority over the town, left to his own discretion. The people of the said surveyor, wishing to measure in the town the next day according to the order, were hindered in their work by the sepoys of the havildar, whereupon they proceeded to the front houses before the fort with the intention of measuring them; but as soon as the first undersigned received knowledge thereof, he had them driven away from there by the head peons, and also refused to let them take any measurement on the cupang, as both of those areas belonged in ownership to the Company. Those people immediately thereafter departed from the town, saying that they would inform their master of what had occurred; but as we have heard nothing since, we think we have reason to hope that we will not have to suffer any further trouble in that regard. To the Right Honourable Pieter Haksteen, Ordinary Councillor of the Dutch Indies, and outgoing, and the Right Honourable and Valiant Reijnier van Vlissingen, Elected Governor and Director of this Coromandel Coast with its dependencies, etc. etc., along with the Honourable Council there. Right Honourable Ruling Lords and Gentlemen! In humble response to Your Right Honours' highly revered letter dated 15 August last, the humble first signatory of this takes the liberty to express his deeply owed gratitude for the kindness which You have been pleased to show him in accepting the offered retention of the share due to him in the 3 per cent which the Lords Majors have been pleased to allocate to some servants on this Coast from the Coromandel linens being sold, as well as the sequestration into the Company's main cash treasury here of his jewels, gold, and silverware, etc., as an amicable pledge or security for the debts of the merchants of this factory, Wisiappa spit tana Chittij and Daatjerij Erraij, incurred under his administration and that of the secunde Ian Visscher. In accordance with Your Right Honours' highly respected order contained in the same letter, he transferred shortly after its receipt, namely on 25 September last, the few valuables which he possesses and which are specifically listed in the enclosed inventory into the Company's main cash treasury. The same have been appraised by one of the most knowledgeable persons we have available here, and according to the aforementioned inventory are found to amount to pa/o 1265. –. The humble second signatory, who placed the same into a small chest, locked and sealed it in the presence of the secretary and two committee members, and subsequently stored it in the said treasury, gladly undertakes to account for them at all times as they were received, but must at the same time confess to Your Right Honours that he can by no means hold himself responsible for the appraised value or quality. Meanwhile, we flatter ourselves with the hope that Your Right Honours, upon a favourable examination of the state of the debts of the Company's merchants, observing that during the course of this financial year they have reduced their debit to an amount of pra/o 1043.2 1/8 or ƒ697 12., of which Wissiapa Sjittana Chittij is still owing pa/o 507. 1. 1/8 or ƒ2824. 12. 8. and Daatcherij Evraij 5372: 10:½ or 2417:19: 8:, will be pleased to take some satisfaction, and at the same time consider that the difficulty of collecting those debts seems to be of little consequence given a continuing peaceful condition in this region. For this reason, the first signatory once again humbly prays that Your Right Honours may have the benevolence to let the alleged arrangement concerning the withholding of the gratuity and the sequestration of the jewels, gold, and silverware stand, waiving the ordered provisional deposit of funds or the provision of surety for the debts of the aforementioned merchants; for which high benefaction to be shown, he will bear Your Right Honours endless gratitude, just as he in all humility offers herewith for the promised retention of the proceeds from the estate of the deceased secunde Visscher, who was jointly responsible alongside him, until the full liquidation of the debts of the repeatedly mentioned merchants. Having had the honour in the general letter sent under today's date under the item of the contracting of the new demands to inform Your Right Honours in detail of the required and effected surety by the Company's merchants, we shall, to avoid prolixity, refer thereto under Your most favourable interpretation. on that occasion, as well as to regale their Duan Ienpenne Iagoenada Rasoe with a small gift, as Your Right Honourable will observe upon a discretionary examination of the outgoing gift account of this past month. The arrival of their servants before the said princes, and a verbal conversation held with the highest-mentioned of the same, Your Right Honourable will find clearly described in the copies of the letters addressed by them to us, and the report delivered upon their return, likewise accompanying this under Letter C. The reproaches and threats that were perceived in the said writings, which the Prince Sjittaramarasoe is making, have given us no small concern, so that out of consideration that he ought to be satisfied in one way or another if one did not wish to await the utmost prejudice and risk to the interests of the Honourable Company, we requested His Highness to send his aforesaid Duan hither, as a person of penetrating judgment and great affection for the Honourable Company, as well as a very old known friend of the chiefs of this office, in order to enter into a verbal conversation with him regarding His Highness's desire; and through that path to avoid all unexpected grounds for dispute, just as the aforesaid Duan then also appeared here on the 10th instant, subsequently paid his visit inside the fort, and delivered to us a letter from His Highness Sjittaramarasoe, which likewise accompanies this in original, accompanied by its translation under the aforementioned Letter A. After some reciprocal arguments, the intention of the prince appeared to us, as we had also already learned from the correspondence cited here before, mostly to come down to this, that he claimed a new advance of one lak of rupees from the Honourable Company, on condition nevertheless that there should be credited in reduction thereof that which had appeared to him, from the account sent by us to His Highness, that he was in arrears. We have had no small trouble to convince the same Duan, in the most civil and clear manner, who it seemed had imagined that he would receive the said funds according to the contract, to which he appealed in every case, that we not only had no money at all, much less any fund at hand, but also on the other hand, as subordinates, were unable to condescend to such requests without the knowledge of our superiors, the illustrious Coromandel Government; but finally his mother and other family also reside there, so he departed thither immediately, but because of the funeral ceremonies that are not yet finished, he has sent us no answer. We cannot refrain from submitting to Your Right Honourable, subject to favorable correction, for consideration whether that requested new money loan to be made, whether it be satisfied at Nagapatnam or sent hither, is not a desirable thing for the Honourable Company, since one must assume that those princes will thereby be forced, after the expiration of the last lease year, through their inability to liquidate their arrears, to surrender Bimilipatnam with its dependencies again, whereby there is indisputably some prospect on that occasion either to contract some favorable conditions or else a reduction in moneys for the Honourable Company, whereas in the opposite case the instigation of the English, supported by an advance of money to liquidate the account of the Honourable Company, could provide an opportunity for those princes to set the Dutch aside after the expiration of the lease term, and place the dependencies of this village under a havildar as was the case previously; which, since a native servant of the English could be chosen for that purpose, could only turn out to the great prejudice of the interests of the Honourable Company, yea the total ruin of this factory. As soon as we obtain an answer from the prince or his Duan, we shall have the honour, in accordance with our dutiful obligation, to make a further report of this affair to Your Right Honourable, praying in the meantime of the same that the delivered gifts, both those given on the occasion of the journey of our servants and the view gifts and travel expenses offered by them according to the custom of the country, everything to the amount of f 472. 1. 8. purchase price and f 626. 12. 8. sale value, distinctly mentioned in the gift account of the ultimate of August last, may kindly be passed for writing off, both out of consideration of its necessity and because there is included therein the gift that those princes enjoy annually on the Gentoo New Year's days, but which in the current year, on account of Their Highnesses' absence from their place of residence Vizianagaram, has not been delivered. transacted with him had the fortune of informing your Right Honourable Worships by our humble separate letters of 31 October last, have maintained no correspondence with the same, other than merely a note of condolence upon the death of his younger brother, in order thereby to give him all the greater proof of our consideration for his person and gratitude for his affection for the interests of the Noble Company, his Highness the prince Sjittaramarasoe, as well as the Duan, as appears from the original and copy translated letters of the 1st and 2nd current respectfully accompanying these presents under letter A, have nevertheless been pleased to report that his Highness condescended to what was written to him by us in the name of Iaggoenada Rasoe to maintain your Right Honourable Worships on the matter of the rupees. We have taken into consideration whether we should discuss with that prince and his Duan this contrary manner of expression, conflicting with our aforesaid humble advice of the 31st last, as if that affair had been settled by us with the Duan by correspondence and not verbally during his presence here, but considering that this did not matter with regard to the Company's interests, and that we on our part also had nothing to fear that your Right Honourable Worships would give more credit to this improper expression than to our repeatedly mentioned humble advice, since the same was accompanied by the original and translated letter whereby his Highness sent the Duan hither and requests us to give credit to his words, and furthermore that the same affair, according to the further contents of these two last-received letters, is now so far directed for the better that we have in any case gained time to be provided with your Right Honourable Worships' timely orders and wise counsel as to how we are further to conduct ourselves therein, whereas at first sight it was to be feared that the prince would have forced us by violence to hand over at least all the cash we could have got together, or to suffer that the privileges of the contract should immediately be suspended, we have, in hopes of your Right Honourable Worships' favourable approval, deemed it most advisable to pass over that conflicting expression in silence, both in the letter from the prince and in that from the Duan; and, see also the enclosed draft outgoing letter letter B, to reply to his Highness only that pursuant to his desire a letter addressed to your Right Honourable Worships was received by a sepoy, containing communication of his Highness's desire and a request for a speedy reply to the same, to the end that subsequently, if your Right Honourable Worships see fit, the demanded 50000 rupees could be handed over to the persons to be nominated by his Highness; and alongside this also actually attached such a letter addressed to your Right Honourable Worships, as we have the honour to have accompany these presents in copy, lettered [illegible], which his Highness, if he pleases, could send off alongside a letter on his behalf by his harkaras, in order to obtain all the prompter a reply. For the sake of brevity, we respectfully refer to their contents, flattering ourselves at the same time that Your Right Honorable will observe therefrom, on the one hand, that we have not neglected to urge that prince with emphasis on all the points recommended to us by Your Right Honorable, but on the other hand also that all these representations, however reasonable, seem to find little acceptance with His Highness, at least not to the extent that 361 there is much hope that he will be pleased to pay any regard to them. For although in the prince's last missive peace and friendship, as well as the dispatching hither of the Duan Ten penne Iaggoenadoe Rasoe was promised, nevertheless, on account of his well-known fickle nature, not much reliance can be placed on the former, and the latter has also to this day had no result. Thus one may well presume from this delay and the tenor of both letters, as has also since been learned from the side, that if that Duan should appear here, he will be equipped with such orders that nothing shall step outside the old contract, nor any reduction of the lease be tolerated, but at best only the term of a new loan to be made; against which, on the other hand, the fourth article of the same contract—containing that Their High Honors would validate 4,000 Rops. per year, or 20,000 Rops. in 5 years, for the losses and extortions formerly inflicted upon the Company's merchants and other inhabitants, as after the expiration of these 5 years, when according to the contents of that same article all claims of that nature shall cease, lapsing of their own accord—must also necessarily be omitted. Nevertheless, upon the appearance of the aforementioned Duan, as otherwise, we shall strictly continue to insist upon what has been recommended, and accept no proposals except upon Your Right Honorable's honored approval and most wise correction. The reason that the prince does not pursue this matter with haste, we think to be because, having been somewhat provided with cash by the saukaars and with ammunition and men by the English, he has for some time, along with his war troops reinforced by 10 companies of English sepoys, each of 100 men, and some Europeans, under the command of the Chicacole and Telmoer commanders, proceeded to the forts of Cottacotta and Goeloegonda, both situated in heavy bamboo forests, in order to compel their regents named Lingaboepattie and Erroeboepattie to pay some extraordinary contribution moneys, or, upon refusal, to turn those strongholds into heaps of ruins. As it has since also been divulged, both of them are said to have surrendered to the prince, but the aforementioned regents retired in time to the high mountains and thus escaped the hands of their enemy. Nor has it been learned to date that the prince has caused those strongholds to be razed. In the meantime, we would have gladly seen that our contentment with that agreeable improvement in the state of your factory had not been somewhat disturbed by the unexpected and troublesome solicitation of Prince Tjitaramarasoe to obtain once again a sum of 100000 Rupees on loan, under the promise that he will pay off that which was still owed according to the account drawn up by you and approved by His Highness for the moneys previously enjoyed or in the year 1768 at the establishing of the five-year lease contract, and which according to the aforesaid account and by the demonstration made by you in your letters of the 8th of November still amounts to Rop. 51665. 1/4. That proposal is good in so far as the Honorable Company recovers without loss that which it has previously disbursed, but it is nevertheless directly contrary to the contents of the contract, for it is clearly stated therein that the stipulated five-year lease period having expired, and the money taken up having been paid with the interest accrued thereon, and the Prince again being in need of money, and the Honorable Company then, if so inclined and not otherwise, an equal amount will be lent under those same conditions as have been framed in that regard, a condition, as you know, stipulated and inserted into the contract against our will and intention, as we expressed our dissatisfaction to you about it, and showed the consequences thereof in our separate letter of the 4th of August 1768, yet we allowed it to pass, in the expectation that it would have no consequence, and that the aforementioned Prince would adhere strictly to the agreement made, but how greatly we were mistaken in that regard, we must now experience to our bitter regret and no less displeasure at the inconstancy of that regional Ruler. such freedom to offer to your Serene Highness and your Right Honorable Nobilities the copies of my separate letters dated 15 October of the past year, the last day of June, and 15 October of this year, as well as today's date, dispatched to the Noble High Indian Government at Batavia, accompanied by the annexes belonging to the third cited letter, to which I further take the liberty humbly to refer regarding the state of affairs concerning the principality of Tansjoer, which is in the utmost confusion and ruin, both due to the recent invasion by the Carnatic subahdar Mahomethalichan and its unrestrained and arbitrary administration, and in particular is in the greatest distress for money, both to furnish what is still lacking of the contracted sum of 50 lakh rupees to the said subahdar upon the conclusion of peace, and for the payment of his troops, which, as is reported, are in arrears by as much as 1½ lakh pardaus, that is ƒ 281250 Dutch money. The prince, to that end, has had to proceed to mortgaging his lands, both to the subahdar himself and to the English in the name of their servants, as your Serene Highness and your Right Honorable Nobilities will find described in greater detail in the separate resolutions of the Coromandel Government and its dispatched separate dispatches to Batavia, just as you may likewise be pleased to consider the reasons that moved the government here to assist the prince with a money loan, first first of 80000 pagodas in two installments, on the security of jewels, and subsequently of 35000 pagodas on the lands of the province of Kiewaloer, or together 115000 pagodas. Through all these money loans, the prince has not even been able to satisfy the subahdar and restore his disordered and ruined finances, but has even had to take recourse to private individuals, mortgaging lands as well as jewels. These creditors, especially those dependent on the English, who want their disbursed money returned by force, trouble him exceedingly, and his Highness also wishes to rid himself of them, fearing that when another rupture occurs between him and the subahdar, which could happen very suddenly, his mortgaged jewels and and lands, being in the hands of his opponents, will be lost, or must be regarded as such. His Highness has therefore had application made to me by his emissaries for a new money loan on the pledge of jewels and various lands, which I indeed declined at first, but at the same time I made use of that and other opportunities that presented themselves to me to profit from the present embarrassment of the prince in order to secure some advantage for the Honorable Company. To that end, I proposed to the court to buy off forever the recognition moneys and the same for elephants, which annually cost the Honorable Company a considerable amount of 3333.8 pagodas or ƒ 15000, for a certain sum of money to be stipulated for it, in order to free the Honorable Company from that servitude and release it from tributary status to that principality, as one cannot foresee what might yet happen, and in the event of the conquest of that principality by the subahdar, the English gaining a firm footing in the same, they might harass the Honorable Company in everything and make its seat and trade in all its branches difficult. However, I was not able to succeed in that good objective, as the prince would by no means consent to relinquishing the same, and considering it a slight and contrary to his princely majesty, declared that although his lands were mortgaged due to an accidental invasion, they were nevertheless not yet lost. Thus I had to abandon that for the present, and further had to limit myself to obtaining as a pledge the coastal places Naoer and Topotorre, the first located well within range of the artillery of this city to the north, and the second situated in sight of this place to the south of it; because possession of them by foreign Europeans has always been deemed a very detrimental consequence for the Company's trade and seat at this place, as well as for the correspondence between this government and that of Ceylon, as many passages to that effect are to be found in the Company's papers of various times, and mention was also recently made in the secret Coromandel resolutions of 21 November of the past year and 7 December of this year. For such reasons cited therein, matters have advanced so far that an agreement has been reached regarding the pledging of both those places and some other lands adjoining them, together with a quantity of jewels, for for the security of the funds to be advanced thereon, as your Serene Highness and your Right Honorable Nobilities are requested to consider therewith, the confirmation of that agreement, authenticated with the prince's seal, being expected from the court, if the arrival of the Marathas does not present any hindrance to it. For it is said that the court has already received the report that those peoples, joined with the grand subahdar of Golconda, Erisam Allichan, and the notorious Mysorean conqueror Haijder Allichan, known under the name of Haijder Nraijk, are descending with a numerous army to make war upon the subahdar of these Carnatic lowlands, the aforementioned Mahomet Alichan, and to take from him the lands conquered by him.

The apprehension that I had of its poor success has been shown by the outcome not to have been unfounded, as the Prince showed himself very offended thereat, declaring that although he had been somewhat worsted by the recent invasion, he had nevertheless not yet lost his principality, nor could he be considered as such that similar propositions should be made to him, which not only offended him in the highest degree, but also the ceding thereof directly conflicted with the majesty of his princely status, he further marveling at the poor opinion formed of his recovery by regarding it as hopeless. This is also the reason that the prime minister Narsinga Faderauw, with whom I had the emissary confer at length by word of mouth on the subject, and in the letter dispatched to him also made known my opinion in general terms, answered nothing to it, but on the contrary demanded in the Prince's name a further money loan upon a parcel of jewels and some lands, except Naoer; but that request having been finally rejected pursuant to the Resolution of the 5th of this month, and the result of that decision having been announced to the Havildar of Naoer, the consequence was that at the session of the 7th of that month a further decision had to be reached, because then Naoer and Topotorre were offered, with the exception of all the other proposed far-distant lands not suiting the Noble Company, and there was also added the fertile province of Tieroenelloer bordering on the first-mentioned coastal place, under such advantageous conditions as are set forth in that Resolution, to which, and to the reasons that moved me and the Council to the decision to proceed to a further money loan to the Prince, I refer myself with great respect. The contract or bond drawn up thereof was sent to the Court to be validated, confirmed, and ratified with the Prince's seal; which, however, has not yet taken effect because, as I am informed, Naoer was included in the mortgage without the foreknowledge and consent of the Prince, to which His Highness will by no means agree, on the grounds that the selling, mortgaging, or alienating thereof had been most emphatically enjoined by His Highness's father never to be undertaken, in whatever difficulty he might find himself, as this would greatly lower him in the esteem of all his neighbors, especially with the Mughal and other Mohammedan princes, on account of the Moorish temple standing therein, which was held in great esteem by them for the sake of one of their miraculous saints who lay buried there, and that by the ceding and mortgaging of that
