The ship Woestduijn having arrived at the Punnaikayal roadstead on 30 July past, we, by transmission of Receipt of the Fatherland papers dated 18 October 1771. Geijnwensch expected. the Ceylon ministers via the Tuticorin overland route on 10 September thereafter, duly received Your Noble Right Honorable's respected letter of 18 October 1771, together with the Extract from the letter dated 2 October previously written to Their High Mightinesses, and the Annexes listed on the register dated 6 December of the same year, of which we also anticipate the duplicates any day, as we, by way of the Quilon chief Rosier, received news from Anjengo that the ship Geijnwensch was hailed there on 4 September and continued its voyage southward. The orders and remarks contained in the aforesaid letter and Extract we shall strictly observe and take for our guidance, and presently, according to yearly custom, bring to the knowledge of Your Noble Right Honorable that which Regarding what occurred on this coast, reference is made to the annexes. The Company's Trade has been profitable. The return is inserted in the letter of 1 May written to Batavia. has been performed and has occurred here on the Coast in the service of the Honorable Company, and in order to do so with the most convenient brevity, we accompany this, among the other annexes, with the copies of the general and secret letters dated 7 January, 4 March, 8 April, and 1 May last past written to Their High Mightinesses at Batavia concerning the Company's affairs and interests in this Commandery. The Company's Trade in Malabar has recently turned out as desired; a good quantity of spices, chiefly cloves, of which the stock here was quite large, together with all the other merchandise received from Batavia, have been sold out; with such profits as are stated in the Gross Return inserted The trade would have been even more profitable if one had been supplied with Japanese copper rods. There are only few spices remaining. For that reason early supplies have been requisitioned. in our general letter written under date of 1 May to Batavia, and the trade would have been far more favorable this year had we been able to receive from Batavia the entire requisitioned quantity of merchandise, chiefly the Japanese copper rods, which were much sought after this year, but with which we could not be supplied at all; Since now nothing remains in our warehouse except some spices, we have requested Their High Mightinesses that we may be supplied early with the requisitioned trade wares, and that a ship, if possible, may be dispatched so early from Batavia that it can be here in the beginning of the month of November, in order to be able to accommodate the arriving merchants with sought-after trade goods.

The flourishing of trade is a continuous object of attention. The reduction of the burdens. Evidence thereof is in the documents and the balance sheet to follow. Goods, and to make trade flourish more and more, which being a steady object of our zeal and attention, we hope that our efforts will be attended by good success, and we be so fortunate as to bring this Commandement to a more advantageous condition, both through the increasing of profits and reduction of burdens, to which we are no less attentive, and of which we hope Your Right Honorable Lords will find tangible evidence in our coming resolutions and copy books, and will be even further apparent from the balance sheet drawn from the trade ledgers of this Commandement for the book year now ended, which, as soon as the books are closed, will be forwarded under a cover letter. Meanwhile The balance sheets of Anno 17 26/2. and 17 3/4. are transmitted along with the returns. These documents have so long not been sent because of the delayed trade accounting. The balance sheet of 17 3/0. has been sent to the Netherlands via Batavia. Meanwhile, transmitted herewith are the balance sheets drawn from the ledgers of Anno 17 23/70. and 17 23/41. with the returns of what was traded in those book years; which documents could not be sent for so long because the trade accounting had fallen so far behind that it could only recently, through sustained diligence, be put back on an even footing; and although we have already, in the month of March last, sent the balance sheet of Anno 17 37/70. for Your Right Honorable Lords to Batavia, with a request to Their High Excellencies to forward the same further to the Netherlands, for which we then had no opportunity, and we hope that the same will already have been received by Your Right Honorable Lords, we nevertheless also let the same accompany this Comparison of the burdens and profits of the said two book years. and deem it our duty to show briefly here what burdens and profits were borne in that and the subsequent book year of 17 27/1. However, it is believed to be very well known that His Highness effectively intended this year to deliver more pepper, and for that reason, in the division made of his pepper, he also somewhat reduced the share of the English at Anjengo this time. But to our misfortune, this year has not been a favorable pepper crop, because of which our intended contingent, as well as that of the English and of himself (which he ships for his own account), had to undergo a reduction, so that without doubt we would otherwise have received more pepper this year than last year. The bearer of this, the ship 't Velthoen, having arrived here from Souratta on the 22nd of this month to deliver some goods which we had requisitioned from there, we have, since Ceylon is provided with sufficient pepper and we nevertheless still had a good quantity in stock both at Cochim and at the southern outer offices, thought fit to take advantage of this opportunity to send that cargo with it to Batavia, which otherwise, in the absence of a later opportunity, would have had to remain lying over here; we have proceeded to this all the sooner because the ship had to be provided with two anchor stocks, and thus remain here for a little while yet, during which intermediate time we caused the pepper remaining on hand at Cochim to be shipped into it, to the quantity of 47357 lb; and subsequently dispatched that vessel, after first placing some carpenters upon it to construct the bulkhead en route in order not to delay the ship thereafter, to Porca and Calicoilan, and instructed the Residents to load the pepper to be found with them into it with the greatest speed, and to let the ship continue its journey immediately, sending the necessary papers under their accompanying letters to Your High Nobilities; which we do not doubt will have been carried out by them, and it will thus appear to Your High Nobilities from their papers what quantity that vessel has taken in there, which we cannot indeed determine, but estimate to be between 4 to 500,000 lb.
