My supreme commander, the Honorable Lord Commander, upon the receipt of Your Honor's first ola in which communication was made concerning the desertion of a certain fisherman named Macoda residing on Vypeen and how he was said to have become a Christian at Varapoly with his wife and children, at once wrote a letter to the bishop, sending along the translation of Your Honor's ola; whereto the bishop has served His Honorable Worship as an answer: that the fisherman Panaken Malliporotto, having been inclined for 2 to 3 years already to accept the Christian faith, the said bishop on the 12th of this month made him, the fisherman, a Christian along with 9 or 10 persons more; that thereupon Your Honor's people were said to have arrived with an ola to reclaim those people, whereon the bishop is said to have sent Your Honor the ordinary answer, namely that they do not just convert heathens to Christianity today, but have always done so; and since it is a finished matter, His Honorable Worship will take such measures against this as shall be deemed necessary to remove the displeasure of the regents of the land, in the matter concerned, as soon as Your Honor shall have come hither in person. It was very dear and agreeable to me to learn that His Honorable Worship would redress this matter of Macoda satisfactorily, and for the future would make such arrangements as equity entails. Therefore I hope that with my arrival there and the meeting to be held with His Honorable Worship this matter will be decided for the best. The bishop has sent as an answer that he baptized all the people who come to him. It is true that the heathens who lose their caste, to the number of one or two persons who come there, are baptized; but when 10 to 15 head used to come at once, one was not accustomed to baptize them. Acting thus, all our slaves will convert to Christianity. I shall give His Honorable Worship a detailed account of this matter upon my arrival there. When the serfs used to convert to the Christian faith out of their ignorance, one was accustomed to return them upon our reclamation. Therefore I hope that His Honorable Worship will please surrender the said Macoda with his family to me. If no redress is made in this regard, I shall have to suffer great grief. I think that before my arrival there the Christians will seek to dislodge the said Macoda and his family. Therefore I request to keep the said Macoda and his family in safe custody. He became a Christian through the instigation of the Christians, and they might sometimes also lead him and his family so far astray that they would absent themselves. His pallegas and fishing nets have been brought to Saint Louis and kept there. I request that these may also be kept in safe custody. The 24th September In the city of Cochim Anno 1772 complained in writing that he baptized his soldiers when, out of fear of punishment, they took refuge with him; that in this manner he could keep his people in no order; and that if such occurred again, great difficulties would arise from it. Upon this, I had already demanded an accounting from the bishop and received it, with many grievances alongside it concerning the unheard-of oppressions and insults which he currently had to endure, not only from the ragiadoors but even from the minister soldiers of the king of Trevancoor. Thus, I engaged the emissary on this matter in very emphatic terms, and at the same time I adduced various motives why I judged it best that the king leave all his subjects the freedom to become Christians or not. But 307 The 29th September Anno 1772 Cochim In the City But the emissary seemed to take this amiss, and considering myself unauthorized to press a heathen prince more strongly on a matter that even Christian princes in Europe do not wish to concede, I changed my tone and said that he should not take my proposal as if I wished to prescribe laws to the king of Trevancoor with respect to his subjects; that, on the contrary, I assured him I would lend a helping hand in that matter in so far as equity required, and that he therefore had only to make known to me frankly what the king actually desired. To this the answer was: That neither the bishop of Warapolij nor his subordinate priests should be permitted to baptize any of the subjects whose parents were not Christians, without the prior knowledge or consent of the king of Trevancoor.
