57 was thwarted, Your High Excellencies will please to observe; that the sale sums were known at 360000. and 24000. pagodas, which the Prince and his envoys very strongly desired; and gave cause for some time being spent therewith, but notwithstanding this, however much it was urged, I diminished the same down to the aforementioned agreed and paid amounts, and finally rejected them if they could not consent to the offer made by me, The obtaining of Naoer and Topotoure, for the sake of which I had to resolve upon the purchase of Kiewaloer and Tripondi, was also not accompanied without great trouble, and the Prince, as aforesaid, would never have acceded thereto, were it not for the great embarrassment for money, whereby he ran the danger of losing his Kingdom, whereas otherwise, by obtaining the same, he sees a chance to keep it going for some time yet, if in the meantime a diversion cannot be brought about for the restoration of his circumstances, the envoys having at the handover of the bill of sale of Naoer and Topotorre, especially with regard to the first place, testified and assured by order and in the name of the Prince, that the same was ceded solely and only in the hope that the Honorable Company would assist His Highness with people, principally with artillerymen, which has been pressed on all occasions, and is now being done even more without ceasing, I cannot fail to testify here, that I could not be without some disturbance of mind at the handover of the aforementioned bills of sale, over the emotion that the envoys had thereof, as they, with shedding of tears, compared their Prince to parents who, pressed by hunger, hopeless of finding any other outcome, are forced to sell one of their dearest children, this I add here only under favorable interpretation to bring to Your High Excellencies' attention alone the distress into which the Prince has been brought, and currently still finds himself; While for the rest I have not neglected a moment of time to immediately make the Honorable Company enjoy the desired fruits of these newly acquired lands, so that, although the season of the early crop has already passed, and the shortness of the time that remains between this and the great crop, which commences in this month; nevertheless to fulfill as much as possible the good objective of its purchase, I have therefore leased out the lands of Kiewaloer for one year, for an amount of new Nagapatnam . . . . . . . . . . . 59 the accounts of the sowing were examined and liquidated; therefore, they will not allow themselves to be governed by a servant of a lesser title, but could give much cause for all kinds of estrangements, so I have, with the favorable pleasure of Your Right Excellencies, arranged and directed it in that manner; while all matters were nevertheless managed and settled with prior knowledge and by order of the Governor, concerning all of which I most humbly request Your Right Excellencies' much desired approval. I also have the honor under this chapter of Tansjoer to bring to the knowledge of Your Right Excellencies, that in the month of February of this year I received a letter from the factotum at that Court, Barsinga Gaderauw, whereby the Interpreter and Brahmin of the Honorable Company, Nagamalloe Chinaija Haijker and Oddawargam Wengata Soebaraijer Aijen, were summoned to the Court, in order to meet the prince, since His Highness had some matters to propose to me through them; pursuant to that, they traveled to the Court, and having returned after a delay of nearly two months, they brought a letter and a gift of a breast and a head jewel, along with an honorary robe, consisting of 6 different pieces, for His Right Excellency the Right Honorable Governor-General, and in addition a letter to me with a gift of a breast jewel, and an honorary robe of five diverse pieces; with the urgent request to send the letter and the gift to the aforementioned His Right Excellency by the first opportunity to Batavia, and at the same time to write in detail about the matters mentioned in His Right Excellency's letter, of which a copy was sent to me, and to bring the same to a desired result, as well as to procure a speedy answer thereto; pursuant to which request, I have the honor to respectfully offer the letter and the gift herewith, being the first opportunity of which I have been able to make use, to the aforementioned His Right Excellency, together with the copy of the letter addressed to me, and the transcript of the answer served by me thereto; His Highness having since several times through the aforementioned canna 10. 60 Cannagasawea Poele as well as Harsinga Bhosale had that urgent request renewed, and asked whether no answer had yet been received thereto; with the request to write further to Your Right Excellencies about it; regarding His Highness's urgent request therein, along with the presentation made on that account, I respectfully refer myself, in order to avoid prolixity, to the contents of the prince's aforementioned letter itself. Concerning now the condition of the aforementioned principality, nothing can yet be reported with certainty, although common rumor has it that the souba will not have it quite as easy as he had imagined in the beginning, since already very many troops, both of his and of the English, have perished, and inside the city there is no lack of anything except money alone, so that if the prince can by one means or another to some extent extricate himself from that embarrassment (for which there is, however, little appearance), there still resides great hope that he will be able to maintain himself; for in that case, or if he finds himself in a position to satisfy the arrears of pay, whether in whole or in part, and thereby satisfy the malcontents, it is certain that the 1000 deserted horsemen, already mentioned hereinbefore, who have not yet chosen another side, will not only return to him, but his people will also apply themselves with greater zeal to his well-being, and take his cause to heart, which would be most desirable; since the souba's army, and especially that of the English, as it is claimed, no longer use or exercise that fury which was with them in the beginning, which by rumors is somewhat attributed to the many troops who have already fallen on their side, and who also fall ill daily, and on the other hand is attributed to the conduct of the English Colonel Smith, who is head of the army, who does not seem to mean it sincerely, for which they firstly give as a reason that he is a great and trusted friend of the souba's eldest son, the so-called Nabob of Arcadoe, who has always been and worked considerably against the siege, and still is, as well as on account of his

of it, lives in enmity with his Father and Younger Brother, the so-called Regent of Trisjenepalij (through whose actions and insistence this matter was undertaken), and that this commander therefore pulls on one string with him, or at least secretly seeks to advance his interests. To which is also added, on the other hand, that said army chief, on account of this, is even said to be in a secret negotiation with the Prince, and thus does everything merely pro forma and with no real earnestness to capture the city for the souba. As a third motive for this, it is further remarked that the English ministry at Madraspatnam is also not genuinely intent on letting the Kingdom of Tansjoer fall into the hands of the souba, but that they had only entered into the decision to begin the siege upon the forceful summons made thereto by His Excellency, in order to comply with the General order of the King to assist him in everything, without, however, having much inclination toward it. Yet all of these are matters to which little credit can be given, especially to the last, since it is firm and certain that the English, if they see an opportunity under one pretext or another to gain possession of the Kingdom of Tansjour (which is very considerable on account of the Grains), will by no means fail to do so, especially not in the present state of their affairs, now that their finances are very decayed, as through its possession they gain hope of their recovery; and as for the secret Convention between the Prince and Colonel Smith, it is likewise certain that the latter will not enter into it without a large sum of money, which is, however, the only thing His Highness is lacking. It has also been divulged for some time now that the notorious General Haijder Naijk and the Marattijs were on the march to aid the Prince, which, however good a thing that would be for His Highness, is nevertheless not easily to be believed, partly because they will not come down without the Prince expending large sums of money upon them (for which he has hitherto lacked the means); and partly because, the Lands being full of water everywhere at present, this is also hardly possible, and if it contains any truth at all, it will not happen before December or January, by which time Tansjoer may long since be lost. So that however one turns or twists the matter, that kingdom finds itself merely in a dreadful and lamentable condition, and has little hope of recovery. Furthermore, I deem myself obliged respectfully to note here that I was informed by the Prime Minister of the Court of Tansjoer, Narsinga Ghadde Rauw, in the name of the Prince in the month of April passato by a letter (to be found in translation among the appendices hereof), of the dispatch by the Emperor of Kandia of an embassy of 2 persons to His Highness, with the request to receive them, being persons of distinction, upon their arrival here kindly and with honors. About that same time, by the dispatched Mahaldaar and Cornaks of the Court, the same arrived here some time later with a Company's chaloup from Jaffanapatnam under a covering letter from those ministers, with 4 considerable Elephants and other gift goods, and were received according to the custom in such cases, and they are still here at present, because, having first sat idle for well over a month without going up-country, Tansjoer was besieged in the meantime, and consequently there was subsequently no possibility of executing their commission without exposing themselves and the goods to the danger of the enemy. What the purpose of their dispatch actually entails is unknown to me, and in the visit they paid me 1 1/2 months after their arrival, they revealed nothing of it to me, nor was anything written about it by the Ceylon ministers, so that I have not the slightest disclosure of it.

brought over here 8 head of elephants in reduction of the tribute which the Prince owed for them, of which 7 were landed safely here, but one sank down and died in the vessel either at this roadstead or during the unloading; since that time I have written several times to the Albeschik to send orders for their collection, indeed even in very serious terms, stating that in default thereof I would leave the expenses of their maintenance to the account of His Highness, but obtained not the slightest reply, until now recently or at the beginning of this month, wherein he writes to deliver those animals to the well-known Cannagasawea Poele, whom I accordingly also addressed to take them over immediately, but he declared his inability; that he could not maintain them here, and thus would be forced to sell them at this place or at Portonovo for what they would fetch, for which purpose he will occasionally request my assistance, while in the meantime they still remain charged to the Honorable Company; Since the garrison here, both of military and naval personnel, is very weak, especially in such turbulent circumstances as are currently experienced from time to time on this Coast, and the Ceylon ministers in their letter of 9 August past have requested, if possible, to send back the assistance sent here above-mentioned at the beginning of the northern monsoon; I therefore most respectfully urge Your High Nobilities to assist this Coast on occurring opportunities with the following personnel, namely: 200 European soldiers 150 Malays, and 100 European seamen, as they are most highly necessary here. With regard to the lease of Bimilipatnam and its dependencies, on account of which Your High Nobilities, in Your most respected separate letter of 12 May of last year, were pleased to approve the decision taken by the government here, by the resolution of 9 January prior, to lend again to the Princes Visia and Sjittaramarasoe, upon their troublesome applications made for that purpose, described at large in the chiefs' separate letters of 31 October and 8 November in the year 1771, a sum of 100,000 rupees, after deducting what was then still owed, being 51665¼ rupees, provided they bound themselves anew, after the expiration of the lease term then still running, to contract again in such manner as had been done in the year 1768, and although Their Highnesses were only to receive 18334¾ rupees in cash, they would nevertheless grant a bond for 100,000 rupees, along with several other restrictions circumstantially dealt with in the aforementioned papers, I take the liberty respectfully to inform Your High Nobilities that those Princes, upon receipt of the letter dated 16 January 1772 dispatched by us directly to them, and the chiefs' letter of 12 March following, whereby they were informed of the disposition made by the government here upon their aforementioned applications, in their letter of the 20th of that same month addressed to the chiefs, having expressed their astonishment at the difference that existed between the agreement previously made with them and the chiefs, and what was written, finally declared that they would never enter into such an agreement as was desired on the part of the Honorable Company, further stating at the same time that the alliance still held for one year, and that once that had expired, matters could then be arranged in such manner as should be judged best at that time; while to the chiefs' second request, notwithstanding that the former alliance had not yet expired, nevertheless to contract anew for 5 years, or to prolong the old engagement, contained in their letter sent to the Princes dated 27 March 1772, wherein that of Their Highnesses was refuted, and by them in their letter of 16 May following it was merely said that they were sending their Duan Iagganada Rasoe to Bimilipatnam, and that the chiefs would learn everything from him; without the same however having had any result, and of which the report to

postponed informing Your Right Excellencies at that time, so as not to importune Your most esteemed attention with an incomplete account of matters whose outcome is uncertain. And since, under these circumstances, there was not without reason cause to fear the same apprehension that had already been raised in the event of a refusal of their Highnesses money demand in the aforementioned resolution of 9 January 1772, namely, that they might intend, after the expiration of the contract, to terminate the lease with the Honourable Company and to place Bimilipatnam together with its dependencies once again under a havaldar, as was previously the case, just as it was not obscurely implied in the aforementioned reply, by the failure to dispatch a diwan, that they had little good in mind. He would then, in all likelihood, be a creature of the English, since the said nation, who in all respects are antagonists of the Honourable Company and aim at nothing other than to undermine their Honours trade and to thwart it in every possible way, would in such an unforeseen event by no means fail to play their part masterfully therein. For if they were only first to have a subject there who depended on them, which is much to be feared, because they assist the princes with troops and ammunition, and thereby rescue him from his predicament, there would be no lack of opportunities to vex the Honourable Company in all respects under the pretext and in the name of that man, since, in order not to act openly, they always seek one cloak or another, by causing all possible obstacles, both in trade and in domestic management, besides a series of other detrimental consequences amply described in the said resolution, to which, in order to observe brevity as far as possible, I respectfully refer. I therefore resolved to have a trusted native quietly sound out the princes as to what their actual intentions were, and whether there was any possibility of concluding a new agreement with them, either perpetually or for a number of years, which was then indeed done. However, since the time for the expiration of the contract in the meantime, or while this man was in negotiation with them, had advanced very far, and the princes, according to a demonstration drawn up from the books of that factory, would then, being the ultimate of May of this year, still remain in debit for as much as 4030. 2. rupees, the chiefs were further directly instructed, by separate letter of 28 April last, to enter into a new contract again, if possible, upon such terms and conditions as are prescribed and stipulated in the repeatedly mentioned missive of 15 January 1772, with further orders to urge strongly for some reduction of the lease money, and specifically for the liquidation of the previous debit, and if their Highnesses could not be persuaded to a five-year lease, then at least to endeavor to prolong the same for one to two years, in order to get the princes arrears liquidated in that manner. This had the result that the chief Pfeiffer informed me, by private letter of 7 July last, that the princes, through the intercession of the diwan Jenpenne Jaganadoe rasoe, had finally declared themselves inclined to lease Bimilipatnam with its dependencies again for the term of 3 years for a sum of 18220 rupees per year, instead of the 20220 rupees previously paid, or 2000 rupees less, and that upon the same conditions as contained in the previous contract, except for the withholding of 4000 rupees per year for the compensation of the damage suffered by the merchants, and some other items, fully contained in the report of the native Moetoe, who was dispatched to the princes to solicit this affair, to which I respectfully refer. to provisionally communicate the contents of these papers to the council, in order to resolve what is necessary in that regard, just as, having been taken into deliberation in the secret resolution of 20 August, it was unanimously decreed to qualify the chiefs to enter into a new contract in the aforesaid manner, and further to consent to the demanded loan of 100000 rops against the interest of ½ per Cto per month, to wit, the debt of the princes under the ultimo of May passato included therein, as well as in the advance enjoyment or offset of the amount of the lease monies of the first year, to the amount of rops 18220, in order that after deduction of that sum, the bond be granted, and therein be acknowledged that the princes, in reduction thereof, had allowed that amount to apply for the first year, and subsequently from year to year until the end of the contract, when Their Highnesses shall still remain indebted ropn 57615, for which the saukaar Wannamalijdaas, against whose sufficiency nothing was brought forward by the chief, shall bind himself as surety in such manner and form as is broadly stated in the aforesaid resolution and note, and on whose account prudence and the final liquidation were recommended to the chiefs by separate letter of 22 August passato; Yet with respect to the article of a new promised money loan to be made upon a further contract to be entered into, it were indeed to be wished that no mention thereof had needed to be made in the present agreement, seeing that such is not only contrary to the intention and given orders, but also an all too great servitude; but since without the inclusion of that item no agreement will be reached, and it is nevertheless most advisable for the Company's interest to provisionally retain that lease, I have, to choose the lesser of two evils, had to put up with it, although the chiefs are nonetheless strictly ordered to direct matters in the future in such a way that the lending of money remains directly deferred to the pleasure of the Hon. Company; While the gift that should be offered to the aforesaid diwan Jenpenne Jaggenada rasoe for his exerted efforts in reaching the agreement, in proportion to that which was made to the army chief Taandawanarsaija and the havildar Cottipagawanloe at the inception of the now ended contract, being a matter that ought to be left to the discretion of myself and the Council, the chiefs have been ordered to direct this accordingly as well, without however delaying thereby the entering into and having signed of a new agreement on the aforementioned conditions, of which I still await the outcome, as well as the aforesaid Company's letter and the further reply of the Princes; Regarding the considerations demanded by Your High Nobles with respect to the decline in the sale of Japanese bar copper, I take the liberty humbly to write back that the increased sale price of that mineral in the financial year 1768/9 is indeed one of the principal reasons for the lesser sales therein, of which the sale of 10 years prior serves as a convincing proof, which, being averaged out, amounts to fully 390000 lb, which were essentially sold, yet with no greater profit than 183½ per cent, against which the present sale of only 305798 lb yearly, since the increased price in anno 1768/9 up to anno 1771/2 inclusive, and thus in four financial years, has yielded in profit 217½ per cent; But even though this increase in the sale price indeed causes a reduction in sales, I nevertheless consider the same, subject to superior and wiser judgment, not to be of such weight as to make, on that account, any diminution in the sale price, the less so because from what has been demonstrated above it is most evidently to be seen that the difference in the quantity sold amounts to no more than 85 to 90000 lb a year, for if the lands may once again attain peace and tranquility, this deficit to the detriment of the quantity can very easily be disposed of annually at the present sale price, especially when it

63 Noble, if it may please Your Excellencies to set the price of that metal at all the factories to the west of the Indies proportionally with Cormandel, whereby, in the event of private importation from Souratta, Mallabaar, Bengale, and Ceijlon to the factories of our competitors, where that Japanese mineral is given the name of Swedish copper, it could not be sold at an advance of 50 and 60 percent above the selling price at the just-mentioned places, as is currently practiced due to the difference in price, to the noticeable detriment of the trade on this Coast; and as I hope that this will be adequately noted by Your Excellencies as proof that one is not yet under the necessity of proceeding to a price reduction, because if this were to happen once and be perceived by the merchants that the decreased uptake is the cause thereof, they would thereby become fickle and from time to time bear themselves very haughtily both regarding this and other commodities, merely to obtain a price reduction through lower sales therein, so I will, with Your Excellencies' kind permission, further add and respectfully note that the importation of bar copper from Japan and the transport from Batavia to here has, for several years, not consisted of such excessively large quantities that one became overstocked by it and had to remain burdened with large remnants from one year to the next, over and above the fact that the contract entered into between the Honourable Company and the merchant Tieroemenij Chittij, to take annually 200 bhaaren or 96,000 lb. at the increased price, still subsists, and he will gladly wish to enter into a new contract again on that same footing as soon as the present one has expired, which is to happen at the beginning of the coming year; Having set all this down pursuant to Your Excellencies' venerated order, I flatter myself that I have thereby complied with Your intention, and meanwhile defer with the greatest respect to Your Excellencies' prudent judgment, in the event of a larger supply of that metal, 70 to reduce the price thereof or to make a general regulation regarding it, as Your Excellencies shall judge most convenient; The wife of the prince pretender to the throne of Candia, who arrived here on the ship Vreedelust together with her retinue, I have caused to be received in such manner as dictated by the honored order in Your Excellencies' secret resolution of 6 April of this year; While furthermore, for Your Excellencies' honored information, I note here that I made known to the brother of the said prince pretender the qualification granted by Your Excellencies to send 3 bales of linens to Batavia freight-free, of which he has not availed himself up to now; likewise, that I have rejected several requests made to me to grant permission to various persons who were related to the prince or, as it was said, servants of his, to cross over to Batavia on the Company's ships, regarding which I respectfully request Your Excellencies to honor me with Your further orders as to what extent, and up to what number, I may grant that license in the future; On the occasion that the 3 English warships, which served as convoy for the ambassador of the souba, whereof mention was made herebefore, lay in this roadstead, the commander thereof, Abr. 74 insofar as it has been possible for me, I have given a detailed report of the dire circumstances in which the principality of Tansjoer found itself, of which the duplicate with its enclosures is attached hereto; or rather, on the 17th thereafter, the capital city of that realm having been taken by surprise, and that indeed, as is said, and as is also very probable, by treason, as otherwise, or had this not taken place, it would not have been so easy to capture; thus I deemed it most necessary to give Your High Excellencies the most humble notice, as quickly as possible, of this news and revolution of affairs here in the south of this Coast, which is as momentous as it is to be feared detrimental to the Honorable Company, being a matter of very great importance with respect to the Company's interests here; to which end, by me together with the Council, on the 20th thereafter, when I presented to the members the dangerous and uncertain circumstances in which one found oneself due to this event, it was decided to designate for this purpose the bark De Falck, belonging to Colombo, which brought military personnel from there to here, and in the meantime was employed to make a voyage to Jaffanapatnam to fetch palmyras, and which was expected any day; and in the meantime to retain the ship Den Tempel here until mid-October, or, if the winds and the weather permit and circumstances should require it, indeed a few days longer, in order to be able to inform Your High Excellencies extensively of whatever further might come to occur with regard to this case; as it cannot be foreseen what the subah, or his second son who is in Tansjoer, who in common parlance is called or titled Madarn Molk, will undertake with respect to our seat here, and especially regarding the most recently purchased lands. Which I fear with reason will not be of much good for the Company's interests, since I have already received report that the same has caused to be taken into possession the province of Tieroenellaar, mentioned in my separate letter of the 31st December of the past year and the secret Resolution dated the 7th of that month, which the Danish gentlemen had taken in pledge for a sum of 50,000 pagodas, together with some villages which they held in lease, notwithstanding the demonstrations made against this by the ministry, to the effect that they held the aforesaid province in lawful mortgage; upon which it is said the reply was given that if this were indeed so, he would then respect the mortgage, but that this did not take away the fact that he, as conqueror of the realm, was permitted to take into possession the lands belonging thereto, even if pledged. However, whether this latter, which would contain a proof that he does not intend to act unreasonably, contains the truth, is still uncertain, or at least one can securely place no reliance upon it to be at ease about it, because all the rumors that one daily receives with respect to this affair are so confused and doubtful that one does not know what to believe, as the one sometimes directly contradicts the other, as always takes place in such circumstances; for which reason nothing can be figured on the rumors that circulate with relation to the prince and his family, together with the principal court grandees, as being still very confused and uncertain; and principally that, namely, that the prince's younger brother Rama Samie, being a youth between 12 and 14 years old, a few days before the surprise got out of Tansjoer and went to Satara, the capital or residence of the Marattas, whither it is said that he has already been summoned more than once to rule there as great prince, but which the prince has always prevented him from doing; whereas on the contrary it is again related that he is still in the women's quarters, which I also believe the most; although this, however, is certain, that the prince and his regent Manogie Rauw Iagataaff, alongside several others, have been made prisoners of war, and as such still find themselves for the present in Tansjoer. can come down from the lowlands into the possession of the aforesaid principality, will be disturbed, seeing that his arrival at the aforesaid capital will undoubtedly incite them very much to take the affair of Tansjoer more seriously to heart than has happened hitherto, and it is also not to be thought that the notorious Haijder Alijchan will look upon this conquest with indifferent eyes, because he has too much interest therein, on account of the fact that the souba, remaining in peaceful possession of this realm, would thereby become too powerful; upon all of which, however, no reliance can be placed with any certainty, but it must be awaited with time, since all native princes are very inconstant in their projects and easily let themselves be bribed and bought off with money. As for the transition itself, it is attributed to a betrayal committed, with which the aforesaid regent Manogie Rauw Iagataaff and his two sons, namely Soebarauw Tagataaff and Wiekagie Rauw, are accused, the betrayal being all the more probable on account of the city having been taken in broad daylight between 11 and one o'clock, and on that occasion little or no resistance having been offered, as almost everyone was at that time disarmed and busy performing the usual ceremonies of their spade festival, which began on that very day, in which interval first some sepoys and after that also 200 Europeans, having entered through a breach in the wall, subsequently overpowered and opened the gates; and one has, for that reason as well, grounds to suspect the aforesaid Manogie Rauw and his sons, since they held the chief administration in their hands, and it is not to be thought that without their permission or arrangement that great negligence would have taken place in a city so closely besieged and continually so heavily attacked as Tansjoer, on account of the secret hatred that has always existed between him and the now defeated prince, on account of the difficulties inflicted upon him by the same in several instances during his reign, notwithstanding moreover that he has always secretly been a trusted friend of the souba and has held a high place in his favour, although nothing certain can yet be said of it; and therefore I find myself obliged, concerning the true state of the entire matter, to postpone the report until a further opportunity, until more precise and pertinent reports thereof shall have arrived, for the obtaining of which I shall employ everything that is at all possible, and in the meantime I shall note here that, as rumour has it, at the capture of the city no great acts of violence whatsoever were committed against the military force found therein, but that they, upon laying down their arms, were permitted to go their way. notice was given, while offering a present to the value of C: C: 434 pa/o. to the last-mentioned, in order thereby to cause all displeasure to cease as much as possible, and to restrain them from undertaking anything to the detriment of the Company's possessions, upon which, and principally upon the newly purchased lands, especially Haoer and Topoboure, they, as well as the English, have set their sights very much, in order thereby to obtain the opportunity, whenever the occasion presents itself, to make a dangerous attack upon the adjacent island of Ceijlon, just as very unpleasant tokens thereof have already appeared to me, which I shall have the honor to bring further before the eyes of Your High Excellencies in the following; Yet meanwhile, on the 6th following, a letter was delivered to me from the subah's aforementioned son Madarroel Moelk, who, with his father's army, joined by the English auxiliary troops, was coming closer down step by step, by which he gave notice that he was about to send two ambassadors, named Rahieman alijchan, being the well-known dangerous and Anglophile Poelam Alijchan, who has brewed very much mischief with regard to Tansjoer, and Sadie Chan, with letters from him and his father, and requested that the claims contained therein be fulfilled, just as those two persons then also arrived here on the 8th following, with such letters from Their Highnesses as are inserted in the resolution of the 10th following, as I had not been able to bring the same earlier into Council for deliberation because, on account of their voluminousness, they were not translated earlier than the 9th in the evening, whereby communication was finally given by Their Highnesses of the conquest of the Tansjoer kingdom, and at the same time it was demanded that the Honorable Company should return the purchase deeds of the lands recently bought from the vanquished prince, as well as the cauls of the redeemed recognition moneys, and ditto elephants, and pay tribute to the subah according to the previous custom, and moreover should also restore the jewels which had been pawned by the succumbed prince, both with the Honorable Company and with some private persons here, saying that the Honorable Company would obtain from him the moneys that had in fact been advanced to the prince thereon, as well as deliver up the Tansjoer refugees who had retired hither during the siege of the capital of that kingdom and had secured their valuables here, particularly the two Tansjoer envoys, Narsinga Rauw Bosale and Cannagasawea Poele, the latter on the foundation of a contract which they allege exists on this account between the Honorable Company and the subah, and by which they certainly mean the old agreement for the surrender of fugitives, although they do not specifically express it as such, which takes place especially regarding Tansjoer, under the threat that otherwise, or if one should refuse these their just and completely reasonable demands, as Their Highnesses arrogantly call them, or if one should hinder or resist them regarding the taking possession of all the lands belonging to the Tansjoer kingdom, among which they also include the newly purchased places of the Honorable Company, the subah would then no longer regard the Dutch nation as his friends, nor grant his assistance regarding their trade and further interests, but consider them as great enemies, and would neither tolerate Your Honors in that capacity in their states, which they say extend from the river Kistna to Caab Commerijn, nor permit that they should conduct trade there, but that they would on the contrary have to endure very much, and in that case much blood would also be shed, alongside another series of arrogant expressions, and among others, that if one should be intended to experience the calamities of war, one should first consider very maturely that their army extends from the aforementioned river Kistna down to the Caabcommorijn, and would attack and expel the Dutch nation everywhere, as they wish to indicate thereby, mixed with several false accusations, in order thereby to strike fear into us if possible, and to compel us just to surrender those lands to them cheerfully, and all their further unreasonable desires

And although the aforementioned ambassadors immediately upon their arrival insisted on being dispatched quickly, the importance of the matter nevertheless compelled me and the Council to postpone the final decision on it until the next day, and in the meantime to circulate the received letters to each of the members, so that they might attentively review them in solitude and allow their thoughts to mature fully as to what was best to be done in such a critical matter, because the outcome of the matter, to which the well-being of the Honorable Company and that of its subjects was utterly bound, depended wholly and entirely on the decision to be made. It was, however, already immediately decided then to proclaim by beat of drum that all inhabitants of the Principality of Tanjore who still happened to be in this city with their goods—as most had already departed long since, and the local residents had also fled upon the rumor of the arrival of the Subah's army—should proceed with their belongings as soon as possible out of the Company's jurisdiction to their places of residence. This was done, on the one hand, to show the envoys thereby that one was immediately heeding the letters of Their Highnesses and was not intending to be uncooperative in the slightest thing that included any reasonableness, and that one was indeed bound to do so on account of the existing contracts between the possessors of the Tanjore kingdom and the Honorable Company, which contained the extradition of fugitive persons, if one did not wish to breach them on the part of the Honorable Company, so as not to make the Subah completely uncooperative regarding the confirmation of the prerogatives. And on the other hand, because this was also the only thing that could be put into effect with respect to this demand, both to cajole Their Highnesses somewhat and not to expose the refugees to any misfortunes, since they thereby retained the liberty to go wherever they saw fit; for it was unknown to me that any persons of the slightest standing who properly belonged to the Principality were present here, and the aforesaid two ambassadors of the prince had already departed from here the day after the surrender of the city, without even meeting me in person. In the meeting on the following day, I informed the members at the outset of the matter, so that they might govern themselves accordingly in taking a decision, that although all the jewels and valuables of the prince—which had been pledged both with the Honorable Company and with private individuals, the former for the sum of 80,000 and the latter for 100,000 pagodas, or together 180,000 pagodas—had been delivered to his ambassadors Narsinga Rauw Bosale and Cannagasawea Poele long before the surrender of Tanjore according to their receipt, which at their express request had been dated July 6 and inserted into the aforesaid resolution, and the monies advanced on them had been deducted from the purchase funds; I nevertheless, having received report shortly thereafter that they had left those valuables behind in this city to be sold for the benefit of the prince or else for their private interest, had immediately caused them to be secured, having well been able to foresee that otherwise, or if it were not provided for in time, this would become an apple of discord between the Subah and the Honorable Company, since their presence in the city, which is full of secret spies of the Subah without one being able to ward them off, could not remain so secret that His Highness and his son Madaroel Moelk would not get wind of it. ago, that the ship Den Tempel set sail, with my respectful letters from the day before, in which I had the honor to inform Your High Noblenesses in detail of everything that had been negotiated and carried out up to that time with the young Nawab Madaroel Moelk concerning the newly purchased lands, and the redemption of the recognitions, as well as his pretensions formed therefrom, the same person, after having notified me by a letter late in the evening of 20 October that he was about to march on Naoer with his army, without waiting for the reply to it, combined with the English, marched into Naoer, and took possession of that place by hauling down the Dutch and hoisting the Moorish flag; and our garrison at Naoer, not having found itself strong enough to prevent the advance of the Nawab's army with any effect, according to the order resulting from the arrangement made in the resolution of 11 October, marched from there in good order to this town, after the commander thereof, Captain Lieutenant Ian Scheerken, had delivered the protest, both in Dutch and Persian, to the said Madaroel Moelk, who, having read the same and returning it to the aforementioned Captain, declared that protesting in this matter could have no place, since the land, of which he had taken possession, belonged to him as conqueror of Tansjoer; all of which was translated into French by one of the English officers by whom he was surrounded, and translated into Dutch by Captain Gijsbert Zeegelaar, who, having had the picket that morning, was sent by me with a message to the said Scheerken, and at the same time he requested that two members from the Council be sent to him, in order to negotiate over the disputes, just as everything that occurred regarding this is found recorded in more detail in the separate resolution of 21 of the aforementioned month of October passed on this matter; whereby Your High Noblenesses may furthermore please consider that, however great the inclination and zeal of the government here has been to maintain with emphasis, according to oath and duty, the Company's right and possession of those newly purchased lands obtained through lawful purchase, and to avenge the insult inflicted on the Dutch flag by the invasion of those lands, for which, moreover, one had the pleasure of seeing the force currently at hand here so well disposed that full reliance could be placed on their bravery and fidelity, yet on the other hand, taking into mature consideration the uncertainty of the event and the outcome thereof, as well as the consequences that can and must result therefrom, and also that to preserve the one, everything else would be put in the balance; besides several other considerations and consequences negotiated and adduced in the aforementioned resolution of 21 October of last year, the more so as one had to see and experience, with the utmost astonishment and contrary to all expectation, that in that invasion the English had combined with the troops of the Subah, so that, making a virtue of necessity, it was deemed most salutary to conform somewhat to the circumstances of time and affairs; and meanwhile to endeavor to keep the negotiation dragging on as long as might ever be possible and feasible, until one could be equipped with Your High Noblenesses' wise orders, both concerning the purchase of those lands and recognition, and the infraction inflicted upon the Company's right of ownership over the same so lawfully acquired thereby, as well as how the Subah's violent manner of proceeding in this matter towards the Honorable Company would further be received by the Same, since by the forced surrender thereof, Her Nobleness would no longer have, nor hold power, nor be authorized, to contract with any native princes any longer, or to stipulate any advantage and tranquility for and to the Company's trade and establishment, if one were to be exposed and subjected to the caprice and power of this or that usurper, as the Subah is, and who also as such possesses all his states wrested from time to time from the lawful princes and rulers of these lands solely through the help of the English; The consideration of these principal reasons, and especially to prevent all obstruction to the trade and service of the Honorable Company as much as possible, was the moving cause of the decision taken on that day to commission two members from the assembly, in order to learn what the said His Excellency Madaroel Moelk had to say or propose
