The prayer having been performed, the letter prepared to be offered to Their Right Nobilities per the ship De Tempel was resumed, approved, and signed; to which end it was decided to hand over the same along with the accompanying papers to the skipper and to send him on board therewith, with orders to sail his aforementioned vessel outside the roads and remain lying there until the customary signal shall be given to him to set sail and continue the voyage; and it was furthermore decided to request Their Right Nobilities that there may be accounted for here, in accordance with the qualification granted by Their Honors in the missive of 15 September of the past year, the saltpeter discharged here from that vessel to the quantity of 500 sacks, amounting to sixty-three thousand, one hundred, fifty-six pounds net. The sick-father and steward in the Company's Hospital here, Pancratius Saaringa Messe, having demonstrated by petition that, through the arrival of the troops from Colombo, Jaffanapatnam, and Trincomalee, the garrison here had increased to such an extent that it resulted in far more people lying in the hospital than had previously lain therein, and that their number, in this season of the year, generally amounted to no more than 20 to 30 heads, but the same had now accrued to 60 to 70 people; wherefore it was impossible for him to get by with the ordinary number of 4500 pieces of firewood provided for the service of the hospital, requesting therefore that, above the aforesaid customary provision, another 2000 pieces may be supplied to him extra-ordinarily per month, as long as the garrison here remains so strong. 16 October 1773.
