541 The 8 October 1774. The 8 October 1774 Worldly pleasures, whereby He is as it were provoked to take away the light from our candlestick, and to transfer it to another people that worketh righteousness, whereas He, for the sake of the few, or the small number of Lots found in the midst of Israel, still perhaps spares the remnant of His heritage, and has not delivered it to utter ruin. If we, on the other hand, cast our eye upon our temporal prosperity, a notable decline begins to manifest itself more and more, both through stagnation of trade and daily slackening in private commerce and navigation, not to mention the decline which the Company itself perceives regarding many branches of its commerce, and the disasters which they have encountered at sea for some years furnish the sorrowful proofs, among which adversities not the least are the long voyages of the ships that were destined for this Coast this year, of which one, namely the ship the Pallas, appointed as a return ship, has finally arrived after an adverse voyage of 3 months and one day, while the second, namely the ship Vreedelast, still remains absent, and according to the circumstance of the change of the monsoon, which we expect daily, is not to be expected this year, whereby all the well-taken measures and wise arrangements of the High Authorities regarding the appointment and the careening of ships here have had to be deranged, not counting the great mortality and sickness that still continue on most of the incoming ships; to crown all of which vexations there is also added the revolution of affairs here on the Coast, through the downfall of the Tanjore Principality, whereby the little remaining trade and commerce of this city and other places situated by the sea has been practically ruined, through the ruin and dispersal of the wealthy and well-established merchants and inhabitants thereof, moreover these lands are threatened with further adversities if the descent of the Maratha peoples should proceed. The scarcity of grains, and the extraordinary dearness resulting therefrom, may rightly be recorded as a consequence of that revolution, and it would have burst out into a general famine, if the Merciful God, taking pity upon this city and its inhabitants, had not graciously pleased to bless the supply by sea from other regions, and the means employed thereto. These and the previously cited adversities are the most convincing proofs that the Lord's blessings begin to depart from us, and that His sole-protecting preservation will soon entirely abandon us, unless we turn away the heat of His righteous wrath, and, purifying our hearts of wickedness, seek refuge with that great Mediator, who alone is mighty to heal the wounds of His people. All this having been considered by the Government here on the 8th of this month, no less earnestly than attentively, and there being taken into consideration at the same time the approaching time for the departure of the return ships, both from the Indian capital Batavia as well as Ceylon, Bengal, and this Coast, with whose preservation both the general and private interest are bound up, it was on the same day in the Council of Coromandel approved and resolved to proclaim for next Saturday the 15th instant, as it is proclaimed hereby, a general Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer, to be celebrated with open tokens of penitence and humiliation in the church of this city, through a heartfelt thanksgiving for the undeserved tokens of forbearance and goodness, which it still pleases the Almighty to pour out over us indirectly, through a humble confession of our unworthiness, and of the multitude of our transgressions, which, if we were to receive according to our works, would make us worthy of certain ruin of soul and body, through showing remorse and sorrow for the wickednesses of our works and hearts, and through our fervent prayers to reconcile further to the

Having been submitted for the Motherland to be dispatched with the ship de Pallas, and for Batavia to be dispatched with the private bark Mastenbroek, the same were reconsidered, approved, and signed upon arrival. Thereafter, the Governor read to the assembly the translation of the letter from the English Governor and Council at Madraspatnam, dated the 5th of this month, in answer to the letter dispatched to them on the 12th of September last offering for sale the Resident's house of the Honourable Company at Cuddalore. They declare themselves inclined to accept it, provided that the conveyance takes place in the same manner as was done regarding Masulipatnam, namely with the renunciation of the right of seat to commerce, etc., there for the future. And since this was the case regarding Masulipatnam, where the privileges and preeminences were much more extensive than those possessed at Cuddalore, it was found and understood to be good to consent to the same; and consequently to address the conveyance to the Chiefs at Pulicat, in order to have the same delivered to that ministry by the scribe from there or someone else, and to receive the sum of the purchase money; and in the meantime to send the necessary orders to the Bookkeeper Jiorgen Hterfft at Cuddalore for the evacuation of that house to the English and departure from there, as well as to incorporate this transaction to be prepared into the present record. To all who shall see, hear, or read these presents, greetings: Be it known that the Right Honourable Alexander Wynch, Governor and Director of the affairs of the Honourable English East India Company, together with the Council of Fort St. George, having shown their inclination upon the offer made to them to purchase the factory house of the Honourable Dutch Company standing within the city of Cuddalore for the account of the aforesaid Honourable English Company; So it is that we, Reijnier van Vlissingen, Governor and Director on behalf of the Honourable Dutch East India Company on the Coast of Coromandel and its dependencies, together with the Council at Nagapatnam, specially authorized and empowered for this purpose by Their High Excellencies, the Supreme Government of the Indies at Batavia, by letters of 8 June 1774, do hereby sell, cede, and convey in full ownership forever to the aforesaid Honourable English Company and its successors the aforementioned factory house of the Honourable Dutch Company standing within the aforesaid city of Cuddalore, with everything annexed thereto, to be occupied and possessed henceforth by the Honourable English Company and its successors. 14 October 1774. As an asset belonging to them in full ownership, the Honourable Dutch Company therefore renounces, now and forever, not only all further right and claim to that factory house, but also all preeminences, regalia, and privileges which it had regarding the seat and trade as well as otherwise, which now cease by virtue of the aforesaid sale and transfer of that factory house. 548 The 23 October 1774. ordered for the Netherlands the Upper Merchant of the Offices India on the 21st of August of this year, and the copy of Their High Excellencies' rescript to the Bengal ministers, dated 15 June last, and likewise after reading the same, it was approved and understood that the order regarding the Coromandel linens that could not be dispatched to the Netherlands with the direct return ship and could not be brought to the Indian capital in time to be loaded onto the ships of the first consignment, is to hold them for the next direct shipment; however, in such a manner that the assortments that are now demanded should be supplemented from the aforementioned remaining stock, without making a new tender, more being supplied and dispatched than was demanded in the latest requisition for 1775, and to give provisional notice thereof to the chiefs of the subordinate factories.
