We further say this: that the protestations of some lessees who have suffered a loss thereon appear very acceptable to us, being at the same time confirmed by the fact that one never sees the same people take such a lease a second time; and it is also certain that, having no well-to-do burghers or inhabitants in this place, but only 4 to 5 Chinese, private trade is in a languishing state, and thus consequently not only the leases, while the others become poorer from time to time, but also the interest of the Company must decline more and more through the lesser vent of its merchandise, in which little improvement is to be hoped for except through a greater arrival of private traders. Regarding the sale of linens, we can humbly assure Your Right Honorable that nothing that can contribute thereto is neglected, although this year, at the closing of the books, more cloths remain on hand than in the previous year, which we hope may increase again in the future, especially through a smaller debit. And that the present Chief Foekens will take the necessary care to keep non-express vessels out of that fairway, as maintaining that vessel would make the wax far too expensive. We have furthermore seen, not without displeasure, that the servants have employed a private vessel for the conveyance of the collected 200 Picols of Wax, under payment of three rix-dollars for freight of each Picol, notwithstanding they had at hand a suitable small ship of the Company for that purpose, which reckless step on their part indeed deserved that Your Honor had made them reimburse a portion of those paid freight charges. And support the renewed request of that engineer, as well as the satisfaction of what is needed by him for the fortifications. Communicate the representation of the humble petitions of the corporals and privates here, who have served out their term, for a favorable raise. Report that of 3 private soldiers, who requested their discharge in the previous year, two entered into a new contract, and the third now departs for Batavia. Concerning the fortification works and buildings, we humbly refer—in order to spare a double account—to the attached report that the engineer Pilon has made, which we have the honor to present to Your Right Excellencies under the enclosures. The reasons he gives for the little progress made on this work this year are in every way consistent with the truth. Because of these unalterable obstacles, no more than the ravelin before the gate has been completed, and the lodging of the soldiers advanced. We do not fail, however, to employ all means that may facilitate the progress of this work, by encouraging the regents to burn lime, and by extending a helpful hand to the engineer wherever possible, who on his part also applies all zeal. 84 The 5th principal beam, on which the truss rests, is likewise rotted. The 11th principal beam is equally bad, and the wall plate has completely shifted. The wall plate above the Consistory is in no better condition, and is bent entirely outwards. And the one following it is no different. The 10th principal beam on the North side is in no better state, and the 9th of that sort, being equally unfit, is cracked under the wall plate; while the 5th and all others following their companions are equally little to be trusted, which, although one cannot reach the defects underneath in the wall or in the middle, will also be in the same state, being a bad sort of wood; and the same applies to all the wall plates, which are either rotted or have shifted, which latter is very easy to understand when Your Honour considers that several of the principal beams are too short and therefore cannot hold the wall plates, which notoriously must shift. Several principal beams are bent crooked in the middle. The trusses, because they are so badly joined, must, and actually have, because of the height of the roof, completely bent over toward the East side, even to such an extent that no collar beams or knee timbers can hold, and almost all have shifted out of their joints, as the same are held up and braced by several props, which for reason of the danger were already placed in the year 1770 according to report, and have also for the most part given way. The purlins are too thin, and so poorly joined to the trusses, that they cannot hold the trusses together or bear the weight of the tiles. All the principal woodwork, such as the principal beams, wall plates, trusses, knee timbers, and collar beams, is of an equally common and bad sort, easily lapsing into rot, to which it also greatly contributes that it was used green, and it is also mostly cracked; just as this roof in its entirety is in a very bad condition, threatening to collapse from above; and therefore it was advisable, and to prevent dreaded accidents, that Your Honour, since the danger showed itself on the outside of the roof, had the same stripped of all tiles. In summary, the roof is completely unfit and irreparable, with nothing, or little, of its woodwork being able to be employed any longer, except the rafters. The floorboards across the entire attic are unjoined, and several are so thin and weak that one cannot walk over them without danger. The height of the roof is 38 feet perpendicular to the middle of the principal beam. The width in the middle 50 feet. The height of the attic, from the floor to above the beams of the same, is 25½ feet, and the length of the church 100 feet.
