336 Cowle by Maharaja Rajasrie Pretappasinga. Having requested villages: so I grant out of a good heart to the Honorable the following villages, namely: 5 villages from the province of Nagapatnam and the dependency of Chikel, being 1. Northern Poeijoer 1. Southern 1. Lapacoil 1. Aijweloer, and 1. Cade bade. 5 villages as above. 1. Wellegauw or named Sinhora de Saude from the dependency of Tripoendij, belonging under the province of Catsjen. 6 villages in total. In this manner I grant six villages, the Honorable being permitted to deliver the customary dues of the said villages for the pagodas and brahmins according to ancient custom, and to enjoy the villages, provided that for this, beginning with this year, you pay every year as recognition to the dewan what your Honorable has consented to. In the heading of this stood a seal of the prince stamped in black ink, wherein was written: Srie warie karrawasim, an idol's name; and at the side a ditto of the peshwa Nara Singarauw, son of Ananda Rauw; underneath was written: I have written this verbatim according to the verbal order of the prince; and beneath it a small seal of the said peshwa. By order of Rajasrie Pretappa Singajie Rajie Maharaja Sahib, a Takiet Parwanna is addressed to the toll-gatherers in the lands of his Highness the Tanjorean prince, by the powerful and supreme regent Rajasrie Annije Rauw Chetke: Whereas it has always been the custom to collect only half toll on the cloths and linens brought from all quarters of the prince's territory for the Dutch Company to Nagapatnam, your Honors are commanded strictly to observe the same in the future in the very same manner. And from the south and north you are expressly ordered to let the Company's European servants, their native merchants, and others with their palanquins or horses, along with the baggage they carry with them, pass and repass upon showing passports authenticated with the seal of the aforementioned Company, without this being subject to search on their journey, and without you being permitted to refuse this because you might not have received a special order to that effect from the land-regent or the chief toll-gatherers. The paddy and other foodstuffs brought to market from all quarters to the city of Nagapatnam must not be detained in any manner whatsoever. At Chikel, beyond the boutiques already built, no others may be newly constructed. By virtue of the said order, all this must proceed properly without causing the Honorable Company the slightest molest; in the contrary case, the refractory will incur the punishment of the prince. Copies must be taken of this and the original handed back to the Honorable Company. Here stood the seal of the prince printed in black ink. May 1741. Translation of the Peace Contract, entered into and concluded between Rajasrie Pretappa Singajie Raja Maharaja Sahib, prince of Tanjore and lord of Chiole Deesjum, and Rajasrie the Honorable Worshipful Lord Iacob Mossel, Extraordinary Member of the Council of the Dutch Indies, Governor and Director of the Coast of Coromandel, Carnatica, etc., along with the Council, on behalf of the Illustrious Dutch Company. Article 1 All estrangements and enmities that have occurred in the late war shall from this day forth be forgotten on both sides, and turn into a lasting, firm, and inviolable alliance and friendship; this contract being obliged to take effect among the subjects of both sides, in accordance with the contracts and cowles granted by the successive kings of Tanjore who are presently in glory, and further upon such conditions and articles as follow below. 338 To the owners of the 10 seized vessels, the Honorable Company shall restore the same, namely: to Caroeta Awoe Kapoele two, Moetoe Chittij, Mirana, Mahamadoe Lebe, Lebe Tambij, Marie Moetoe Poele, Naymappa Chittij, Omapoele Marcair, and Sawatij Seedoe, each one, and also half of the areca nut as recorded on the passports; the boatmen shall take on their own account the areca nut delivered by the Honorable Company to the Ceylon disava as well as to the Colombo interpreter, along with all the freight charges, having no claim against the Honorable Company. The Honorable Company shall also, upon this condition, restore to Moenijappa Chittij the money for which his vessel was sold, together with half of the areca nut according to the passport. The damage suffered in the war shall be forgotten on both sides, without ever making any claim on that account; all the rest the Honorable Company shall take. The Honorable Company shall also, according to its pleasure, be allowed to coin in the Nagapatnam mint, in standard and weight, Nagapatnam, Porto Novo, and Star pagodas, and all kinds of rupees, provided that its dues are paid to Rajasrie Maharaja Sahib according to ancient custom.
