204 Pursuant to resolutions passed at our sessions of 25 and 31 August, as well as 30 September and 24 November of the past year, we subsequently present to your High Noblenesses among the annexes of this letter a request from the Jaggernaijkpoeram Secunde Mr. Jacob Pieter de Neijs, wherein he requests to be exempted from the compensation imposed upon him, as former Sadraspatnam Secunde, for 37½ lb of cloves found short at the warehouses there in the first six months of the most recently completed trading year; and we simultaneously supplicate your High Noblenesses, by virtue of the reasons alleged by him, to take a favorable disposition regarding his request. Pursuant to your High Noblenesses' most respected order, we caused an investigation to be made at Jaggernaijkpoeram into the considerable underweight of no less than 25274 lb occurring in the Netherlands upon the pepper brought thither by the ship Alkemade; however, the Chiefs can give no more satisfactory reason for this excessive deficit than we can, but refer the accountability thereof to the ship's officers themselves, since that pepper was always under their oversight and accountability. Above all, they attribute this to the Second Mate Cornelis van 't Wout and Boatswain's Mate Jan van Alkemade, under whose oversight and supervision the hold was stowed. In this regard, they only say that they presume that this pepper must have suffered an extraordinary loss, since it not only continuously had to be shifted within the ship, but also, according to orders, a portion thereof was transferred into the sloop de Nagtegaal to make room for storing bales, from which daily as much pepper was taken as the ship's officers deemed necessary for sprinkling between the linen bales. The loss on the aforementioned chintz will be reimbursed. Proposal to maintain the lodge at Narsapoor, and on what grounds reverently to present to Your High Noble Lordships. The loss below the purchase price incurred in the Netherlands on 4,500 pieces of Palicol chintz, amounting together to 10,317 guilders and 5 stuivers, will also be reimbursed to the Company by the former Chief of Palicol and present Second of Palleacatta, Hendrik Schoffier, in accordance with the honored request of our Superior Lords and Your High Noble Lordships' venerated orders. We shall immediately contract for the further requisition for returns for India sent therewith, and properly take due care for the complete satisfaction thereof in good-quality merchandise; we shall also deliver to the commanders of the homeward-bound ships the ordinances sent to us, according to Your Right Honourables' desire, and will henceforth have Your Right Honourables' most revered order observed here, contained in the extract resolution of 26 June, and the extract from the minutes of what was resolved in the Council of India on 31 August 1775, whereby it is ordered what must henceforth be noted in the deeds and muster rolls as well as in the annual return of the vessels. But concerning Your Right Honourables' esteemed questions posed in the aforementioned revered letter, as to whether the order established by us to bring the textiles hither and resort them pertains solely to the textiles that remain after the departure of the direct return ship, or is extended to all the textiles; it serves respectfully to state that we have made that order applicable only to the textiles that remain and arrive after the departure of the return ship; as we trust has already been fully apparent to Your Right Honourables from the extract of the Fatherland letter respectfully answered by us, which was inserted in our humble letter of 16 September 1775 addressed to Your Right Honourables. Statement to be made regarding the expenses. And hereby considering the aforementioned requisition answered, we shall on a following occasion, according to Your Right Honourables' desire, report to Your Right Honourables what the coolie wages for loading and unloading, as well as the rebinding of the resorted bales—which is now written off to the expense of merchandise—would amount to if those textiles were charged separately therewith; 230 Conclusion. because it is not possible for us at present to comply with that esteemed command due to the impending departure of the catamaran by which we annually send our papers for the Netherlands and Batavia to Ceylon, and which we dare not detain any longer. And although, in dispatching this ship, we were unable, due to a shortage of fine linens, to comply with their Highs' most venerated order, written by extract missive of the 8th of October of the past year to their High Excellencies the Governor-General and the Council of the Indies, whereby the cargo of a Coromandel return ship is fixed at 9 tons, we nevertheless hope that this cargo will meet their Highs' expectations. Meanwhile, we sincerely assure your Serene Highness and Noble, Highly-Venerable Sirs that in the future, so far as is possible for us, we shall ensure that the cargo of a return ship comes somewhat closer to the stipulated amount. Pursuant to our promise made in our previous respectful communication, we hereby present to your Serene Highness and Noble, Highly-Venerable Sirs, in a sealed box, two three-figure and two new Nagapatnam pagodas, as well as 8 pieces of the fanams minted here, along with two pieces of silver rupees struck at Jaggernaikpoeram. And whereas the Chief Officers there, in their letter of the 29th of November of the past year, have communicated to us, to our utmost astonishment, that they not only had 12 bales of ordinary bleached and raw first-sort Guinees made in an English weave, but even dispatched three bales of raw Guinees among the returns of the ship De Both to serve as a sample, without giving the slightest report thereof to your Serene Highness, and Noble, Highly-Venerable Sirs, or to us, we have deemed it proper to give communication of this imprudent conduct of the servants, for which we shall sternly reproach them, to your Serene Highness and Noble, Highly-Venerable Sirs. And we at the same time request their Highs, with due submissiveness, to have the aforementioned three bales of linens, which are marked on the invoice of De Both as No. 2 and 24 to 9, sold separately, in order to see what profit they will yield, and then favorably to inform us whether their Highs would be pleased to be supplied with such assortments, of which, according to the servants' writing, we could obtain a reasonable quantity annually, provided that we, as the English do, paid 10 percent more for them than the Company currently gives for the ordinary raw first-sort Guinees. But since our Chief Accama complained about him up to three times to the English Governor at Mazulipatnam, this finally had that desired effect with the said Gentleman, that he arranged at Madras for a Commission to be dispatched to Ingeram to investigate the acts of violence of that Chief; thus we flatter ourselves with reason that the same will soon cease, and our merchants will thereby obtain the opportunity to trade freely again; whereby we expect that their debts will also be reduced.
