To His High Nobility The High Noble, Right Honourable, Far-Commanding Lord Jeremias Van Riemsdijk Governor General together with The Right Noble Lords Councillors of the Netherlands Indies, High Noble, Right Honourable, Far-Commanding Lord; and Right Noble Lords! With the arrival of the private bark De Wilhelmina Elisabeth at Sadraspatnam, where this ves- sel arrived dismasted on the 20th of July, I had the particular honour on the 6th of August thereafter to receive overland Your High Nobilities' duplicate secret missive of the 6th of March of this year; Secret Copy year; but its original, dispatched with the private ship Aschburnham, has not yet been brought here; nor has anything been heard of the said keel. Likewise, upon the arrival of the ship De Princes van Orange, I had the honour to receive their High Nobilities' secret letter dispatched on the 5th of May thereafter, which I now dutifully proceed to answer alongside the aforementioned; and starting immediately with the first, I express to Your High Nobilities my deepest gratitude for the prompt communication of your resolution taken on the 19th of January, regarding the positive orders respectfully requested by me as to what I should do in the event that the Subah of Carnatica, Mahomed Ali Khan, should refuse to give proper 416 satisfaction regarding the incident mentioned in my separate missive of the 30th of October of the past year, which occurred at Paleacatte, between the Nawab's Havildar and the Company's servants, concerning the hindrances caused to us during the unloading of a vessel that had arrived from Wentepalium with textiles for the Company. It was singularly pleasing to me, upon reading the aforesaid missives, to observe that Your High Nobilities were pleased to approve the conduct of the Paleacatte chiefs, as well as my actions regarding this case; and I have also come to share the opinion of Your High Nobilities that, although I have not obtained the slightest satisfaction from His Excellency, who has allowed the matter to rest with the answer once given by him, it would be best for the Company to let it rest as it is for now, without insisting on any further satisfaction from His Excellency in that regard; for it would truly, as Your High Nobilities have been pleased to note, not suit the Company at all at present to enter into a dispute with the Subah over this, or to proceed to acts of hostility by force of arms. And for this I have had all the more reason, because the said chiefs, in their separate letter of the 15th of June, informed me that they had not the slightest reason left to complain about the Havildar, who at present behaves very 2. 417 quietly; which is principally attributed by Chief Johnson to the detachment of eight European soldiers sent from here to reinforce their garrison, upon whose arrival, with two separate sloops, tempers were seen to have cooled down considerably; so that we no longer have to fear that the Havildar or any of his men will again act as violently against the Company's ancient prerogatives and lawfully acquired privileges as happened in the present case. And therefore I hope that this arrangement, or the reinforcement of the Paleacatte garrison, which I deemed necessary for the maintenance of the honour and the rights of the Company, will be favourably regarded by Your High Nobilities.

In the meantime, I assure Your High Excellencies that if it should unexpectedly happen again that the Nabob or his Haweldar at Pallea Catta should see fit to oppose the import and export of Company goods by force of arms, the officials there and I shall in such a case conduct ourselves strictly according to the orders given by Your High Excellencies in that regard, as best according with the interest of the Company. But in order to prevent and avoid such far-reaching hostilities or other unpleasant disputes with the Haweldar, I and the Council, by a joint letter of 24 October 1775, have earnestly instructed the chiefs to exercise caution in every respect, which they have promised me to observe strictly. Therefore, setting my mind at ease in this matter, I hereby offer Your High Excellencies the certificates and attestations obtained from PalleaCatta regarding the aforesaid case as requested, the same being partly sworn, or executed under the offering of the oath, and marked letters A, B, C, numbers 5 to 11; to which, for the convenience of Your High Excellencies, I have attached a register containing the brief contents of each attestation, from which Your High Excellencies, if it pleases you, will discover as clear as day the unjust and unlawful manner in which the Haweldar has acted. This being all that I have judged necessary to answer to Your High Excellencies' first-mentioned letter, I proceed with respect to the reply to the second: By noting at the outset that I judge the present time, now that the Bimilipatnam merchants have a clear and balanced account with the Company, to be the best time to give those traders an overture regarding the speculations that have been made about possibly closing that factory; and therefore, in hope of a favorable approval, I have by a separate letter authorized the chiefs there to sound out those merchants from afar as to whether they might be inclined, should the Company at some point incline toward breaking up there, to follow it with their households to Jaggernaikpoeram. But I have received no answer to this so far, so I must postpone the report thereof to a future opportunity. Meanwhile, I respectfully maintain that with regard to the Palicol merchants, one ought to wait with making the aforementioned proposal to them until they have settled their debts, if not entirely, then at least for the greatest part, because of the danger that lies enclosed therein for the Company, should they or any of them be disinclined to follow the Company. For in this case, one must not count on ever obtaining a settled account with them, as out of fear that the Company will then abandon them, they will certainly know how to manage this through thousands of devious evasions. Yet in this regard, I submit myself with all veneration to Your High Excellencies' wiser judgment, whose positive orders on this I shall await. In my previous respectful letter of 16 September 1775, I had the honor to impart the critical circumstances into which the Bimilipatnam chiefs had been brought by the misconduct of the merchants Wisiappa Chittana Chittij and Daat Cherij Coermana; circumstances by which they were obliged to attempt to obtain the contracted sorts of linens through private suppliers, as it appeared to them that the merchants were no longer to be trusted. And I also promised Your High Excellencies to impart in duty the outcome of that private supply on a subsequent occasion, so I now have the honor to note in continuation that those private suppliers, both through the instigations of the aforesaid merchants and the cooperation of the Duan and writer Jaganadoe Rasoe, have not been in a position to deliver the linens undertaken for procurement. Thus the chiefs have again been necessitated to have recourse to the Company's old merchants Wisiappa Chittana Chittij and Daat Cherij Coermana, whom they have charged in account with all the moneys that had hitherto been vainly disbursed by the private suppliers for the collection of linens, in order to settle it with them against linens in this year—for the time of collection had expired in the meantime. This was an arrangement from which the chiefs could reasonably promise themselves much good, as the merchants now had enough time for collection. However, in this they have also not been able to succeed according to wish, partly because of the unreasonable treatment by the Visianagaram princes and their ministers, who wanted to oblige the merchants, as soon as they should conclude the linen contract with the Company, to sign a bond for an annual tribute of 1000 pagodas. But this was thwarted by the chiefs in a very subtle manner, by not entering into any public contract with the merchants this year, whereby

whereby it appears to the public no differently than if the delivery takes place without any advance of money, although they have agreed in private to make the further required advance under proper receipt; On the other hand, the aforementioned chiefs have had to see all their well-intentioned plans with regard to the merchant Daatcherij Coermana thwarted. For he, being a man who, since the division of his father's estate with his youngest brother Chinama Erraij, has fallen into such an impoverished condition and is moreover so heavily burdened with debts, that the chiefs have not dared to proceed to any advance of money to him with the least certainty or peace of mind. Thus they, who nevertheless were very inclined to assist him as much as was in their power, in order thereby to rescue him from his difficult circumstances, made known to him that they were inclined to contract with him, if only he would cooperate to the extent that the advance that was to be made to him upon the delivery of linens would be secured; at the same time proposing to undertake the collection in partnership with the merchant Wiscappa Chittana Chittij, under a mutual commitment that they would be liable for each other's debts. A proposal altogether equitable and one which Coermana ought to have accepted with gratitude; yet, although the same was accepted by Wisiappa Sjittana Chittij, he nevertheless dared to refuse it out of sheer stubbornness. Likewise their second proposal, to advance the necessary money to the master weavers who were accustomed to procure linens for him, under a written guarantee to deliver linens for the account of Coermana in return for this at a certain specified time, or else to provide two sufficient sureties; as well as the chiefs' third offer to advance five hundred Pagodas to him at their own expense and risk, provided he bound himself first to satisfy those funds in linens before a new advance should be made to him, in order thus to deliver his share in the demand in parcels. And therefore the chiefs, seeing that there was no longer any dealing with Coermana, finally resolved to entrust the procurement of the entire demand to the merchant Wisiappa Tjttana Chittij alone, who, having bound himself in writing to the complete satisfaction of the entire petition before the closing of the navigation, received an advance thereon of 4500.-. Pagodas with 4 per cent agio. A contract which was approved by me and the Council by letter sent thither on 8 July of this year, though with this stipulation, that the stubborn Coermana should not be cast off, but that one must continue to consider him as a merchant of the Company, until such time as one should see whether he might deviate from his obstinate nature and become somewhat more manageable, further notifying that in such a case we were minded to give him a share in the trade again, insofar as this could take place without prejudice to the Company. Yet, however that matter may stand, I hope to inform Your High Honours on a subsequent occasion; meanwhile, I request Your High Honours favorably to approve the aforementioned private contract entered into with Wisiapa Sjittana Chittij alone, on account of the motives cited hereinbefore. Regarding the present condition of the merchants in general, and Your High Honours' question added thereto, whether the Jaggernaikpoeram merchants would be capable enough to accommodate the Company with the required northern coarse guinees, I respectfully submit that all our merchants are reasonably trustworthy, except those of Palicol and Portonovo; and principal among these are the Jaggernaikpoeram merchants, who, as described at large in the general letter now departing, have each provided sufficient surety for their share in the trade; and since the chiefs can thereby entrust a certain sum of money to them with peace of mind, I judge, with submission to wiser judgment, that they will also be in a position henceforth to satisfy the European and Indian petitions being made successively. And it is chiefly upon this, Right Honourable Sirs, as well as upon the aforementioned securities provided by the Jaggernaikpoeram merchants, that I also maintain I may state with some certainty that the aforementioned Jaggernaikpoeram merchants, when necessity demands, will be capable enough to accommodate the Company with the required northern coarse Guineas, both of those assortments woven above Dat Cherom and above Visianagaram. For in order to make a large collection, besides activity, nothing more is required in a merchant than undisturbed trade and unlimited credit. And of both of these I trust they now enjoy the benefit, as our chiefs no longer have any reason to refuse them money, since they are sufficiently secured by the aforementioned sureties for the advanced funds. Regarding the article of household management and the care for increasing the profits to meet the same, I dare respectfully refer myself in this regard to the demonstration of the recent farming out of the Company's revenues here for the year 1777, inserted under the main section of Domains in the general letter now departing. In my respectful letter of the 15th of January of this year, I had the honour to communicate to Your Right Honours that Lord Pigot had arrived from Europe as Governor of the English at Madras; and I added that private rumours dictated that his Lordship was provided with weighty orders, both from His Majesty and from his Masters the Directors of the English East India Company in Europe, which were soon to be carried into execution, among which not the least would be the restoration to their lawful princes of all lands conquered by the Nabob. And now I am enabled to add that this last rumour has also been partially confirmed by the restoration of the dethroned Prince of Tansjour to his throne, with the return to him of all his states. Which was performed with much solemnity in Tansjour on the 11th of April of this year by Lord Pigot himself, in the name of the English Company. A change truly of the utmost importance; yet I dare not state with any certainty on what terms or conditions that restoration took place, for I have received no communication regarding it either from the Prince or from the English. It is only reported that the garrison of the city of Tansjour consists of four hundred European men and four battalions of sepoys, who, being in English pay, are commanded by a colonel of their nation; for which the Prince, out of the revenues of his lands, shall pay annually to the English Company a sum of 400,000 pagodas. A report that merits much belief; at least it is certain that the English, since the Nabob's troops marched out of it, have completely usurped the command over the city and the garrison, and treat the Prince as a state prisoner, or at least little better. For no one is granted access to His Highness unless accompanied by the Commandant or by one of his people; nor has the Prince thus far dared to take the liberty of writing or receiving any letters. But for the rest, His Highness issues his orders with respect to the administration of his lands, and appoints haveldars and other regents according to his choice; whereby also the notorious Cannegasawea, having emerged from his hiding place in Jaffanapatnam, was immediately reinstated in his former posts of subahdar over the provinces of Kiwaloer and Triwaloer, as well as of haveldar at Naoer. In which latter place he is again residing as before. since the arrival of Lord Pigot has also been kept so completely out of all correspondence that I have not dared to write a letter to him with the slightest certainty, whether concerning these or other matters relating to the Company, the more so because I have been assured from good authority that all letters addressed to the Nabab are first brought to the Council of Madras, opened and read there, and, provided they contain no matters of importance, delivered to His Excellency, but on the contrary are withheld. Thus, both for this reason and in compliance with Your High Nobilities' highly venerated order, whereby I am commanded not to engage with the English on that matter, since their mediation found little acceptance or trust with Your High Nobilities, I have ceased all correspondence with that Moorish Prince; and, pending Your High Nobilities' approval, I shall suspend it until time and opportunity appear somewhat more favorable to me than now; for at present I do not know who is, or will become, Souba of Carnatica, Prince of Tansjour, or Governor of Madras. An uncertainty arising from the following unprecedented event. The strict execution of the orders with which Lord Pigot had been provided from Europe immediately aroused very great displeasure on the part of His Excellency the Nabab Machomet Alichan against His Lordship, principally the restoration of the Prince of Tanjour; this displeasure, added to the arbitrary, indeed almost sovereign manner of conduct maintained by the said Lord in the form of government with regard to the Members of the Council, caused everyone early on to conceive a particular hatred against His Lordship, so that for a considerable time there had been murmurs of an uprising or rebellion, which finally broke out on the 23rd of the recently passed month of August. For Governor Lord Pigot, riding out in his carriage at nine o'clock in the evening, was stopped in a treacherous manner by known and unknown persons, who forced him to step out of his carriage and transfer into another carriage, which was already standing outside the Gate for that purpose; in which he was conveyed under an escort of the Nabab's horsemen to the so-called Monte grandie or Great Mount, situated about 3 to 3 1/2 miles inland from Madras, and placed there under the guard of a corps of artillerymen, where he remains arrested to this day. The day after this extraordinary event, they appointed a new governor at Madras named George Straton, and gave seats in the Council again to the members who had been expelled by Lord Pigot; thus they now constitute a new Council. Meanwhile, this momentous event has set the minds of the inhabitants at Madras into great ferment, thereby bringing forth two fierce factions that make the public streets unsafe, whereby the most prominent persons are forced to provide themselves daily with pistols loaded with ball, in order to cover or protect their persons against all violence and nuisance if necessary. What the end of this will be, Time must tell. Meanwhile, it is said that the Council of Madras will request the decision of their Lords Principals in Europe on this momentous event, as they do not wish to subject themselves in this matter to the verdict of the High Council in Bengal. Behold, High Noble and Right Honorable Lords, all that I am able to impart of this momentous incident. Now, the answer thereto and the justification of the chief officers regarding the delayed signing of the contract having arrived, I have the honor to inform that, with respect to the difficulty they had raised in returning the expired five-year contract, they state: That the Princes, during their recent presence there, had seen fit to dispute the legitimacy of the Company's most important privileges with them; consisting mainly in the right to the land of the fort, the mint, and the three bleaching grounds; That, in order to prove the contrary thereof, they searched for the firmans granted for that purpose, and after long search had found a sanad granted to the Company by the old Prince Visia Rama Rasoe regarding the cession of the right to the land of the fort and the mint; written, however, in such a manner that it appeared as if the possession thereof had to depend on the pleasure of the Princes; but that regarding the latter, or the right to the bleaching grounds, they had been able to produce no proof of ownership whatsoever; aside from the five-year contract, in which the same, as well as the land of the fort and the mint, were mentioned as the indisputable property of the Company; this contract containing, moreover, a renewal of all other privileges granted to it by firmans, cowles, etc., since the establishment of the Company there; That the Princes, in this regard, had seemed very inclined to work against the interests of the Company; at least, that they had declared to the chief officers that, in the new contract to be entered into, they wished no mention whatsoever to be made of the contents of the expired five-year contract, under the pretext that they had been forced to enter into the same at that time; That these declarations had aroused an evil suspicion among the said chief officers of the probable unfaithfulness of Their Highnesses, and they had therefore been apprehensive of surrendering the aforementioned contract, since, aside from the aforementioned sanad, they had not the slightest proof in hand to demonstrate the legitimacy of the Company's various privileges, and they were thus apprehensive that, by handing over this document, they would strip themselves of all grounded evidence for asserting the Company's rights; all the more so since they were so greatly strengthened in the suspicion they had conceived by the manner in which the surrender of this contract had been demanded, namely with the notification that Their Highnesses would tear up both it and the duplicate thereof. This having been put forward by the chief officers as the reasons that had prevented them from surrendering the contract, they further submit for respectful consideration in this regard whether the Princes, had they been well-intentioned in this matter, would have acted with so much mistrust; communicating further that, although it was stated in the letter accompanying the Brahmin Onkadalam Sjittana that the new contract would be handed over to them by him, that native had nevertheless been ordered first to secure possession of the five-year contract, without the chief officers having received any assurance that the new contract would then be delivered to them; that during the negotiations thereon with the said Brahmin they had the greatest reason to doubt this, since, when they in turn insisted on having the new contract first, he replied that this paper had remained behind with the Princes, although they were informed by their servants that the said Brahmin had left the same behind in his residence in order first to await the outcome of his visit. It being further cited by the said chief officers in their defense in this matter that it was not customary in that country to return such a public document; for neither any of the renters nor even the Princes themselves were ever required to return the cowles that they received from time to time from the English Company as Nawab of Cikakol, and that they would also be very reluctant to do so and could not easily be persuaded, seeing that they carefully preserved all those cowles as so many proofs of the various privileges that have been successively granted to them. And on the foundation of all this, the chief officers declared that they flattered themselves that I and the Council would fully approve of their having flatly refused to surrender the expired five-year contract. Subsequently, in relation to the elucidation desired from here regarding the land of Medie, the mango gardens, and the villages belonging to Jehente Waroe, they gave the following report: that the land of Medie is nothing other than a piece of pasture land, suited solely for the grazing of horned cattle; that the same is situated in one of the ten villages previously held in lease by the Company, but since most of the said villages were excluded from the new lease, the chief officers, in drawing up the new contract, had sought to include the aforementioned land in the present lease for the convenience of the inhabitants; but this was, because there was no precedent for it

And this matter having been ripely deliberated upon by me and the Council, 12. 431 we were satisfied with the aforesaid explanation of the Chiefs concerning the non-delivery of the five-year contract, as well as with the elucidation given by them regarding the land of medie etc.; the more so when, alongside the Chiefs' further letter of the 20th of June last, we had the pleasure of receiving the long-expected contract concerning the renewal of the lease of Bimilipatnam; from the reading of which we observed that between them and the Visianagaram Princes Sjitta rama rasoe and Visiarama rasoe an agreement and contract had been concluded on the 28th of May preceding, subject to our approval, whereby the Princes again ceded in lease to the Dutch Company for the period of three consecutive years the district of Bimilipatnam and its boundaries, together with the villages belonging under Bimilipatnam, Commerpalium and Nagamoeijapalium, and this for a sum of 8331. Ropias per year, or 24993. in three years; provided that this lease should be considered to have commenced on the 4th of June 1775, or from the day on which the Company again enjoyed the revenues of those lands, and that it should expire on the last day of May 1778; and accordingly we have, for this reason as well as because all prerogatives, privileges, and other concessions that 438 were ceded to the Company by former Princes of those lands, or consented to by Their Highnesses themselves in the previous five-year contract, were again confirmed by the said Princes in this contract, resolved in our session of the 31st of August last past to approve and ratify the aforesaid contract as it stands; whereof we gave communication to the Chiefs by our letter of the 13th of September last, with instructions to make an overture thereof to the Princes in our name according to the customary order. Since Your High Nobilities have been pleased to order and authorize me to send to the capital, under several favorable conditions, on the return ship De Wakkerheijd, one hundred men from the Sipaais currently in service here, who already understand military drill, under their officers and the drillmaster to whom they are accustomed and who understands the language, I now, in fulfillment of this highly honored order, have conveyed on that vessel, under the conditions stated in a separate document signed by the officers, a total of 126 head; consisting of: 2 ensigns 1 European drillmaster 4 sergeants 6 corporals 1 fifer to whose marching cadence the Sipaais are accustomed; and 2 drummers 110 privates, among whom, according to custom, one so-called dummy, whose pay and ration are enjoyed by the drillmaster for his trouble; making together as above 126 head, all, except for the drillmaster, the fifer, and the drummers, of the Heathen caste; for whose convenience on board not only has a separate galley been built, but a separate lodging, apart from the other crew members, has also been designated for them. And for their rations and further necessities for the voyage of three months, I have had provided to the skipper Johansen: The necessary medicines 21960 lb. rice 3660 lb. kadjang 744 lb. sugar 744 lb. tamarind 1098 lb. salt 120 lb. indigenous saffron 552 lb. butter 1476 lb. carwaat 120 lb. pepper 24000 pieces firewood, and 80 leggers water. All stated more broadly and in detail in the expense account of that vessel, to which I respectfully refer for that purpose. Furthermore, considering that the clothing of the Sipaais, both of the officers and the privates, was quite worn out, I have had delivered to all of them—who were in any case entitled to a new uniform with the upcoming New Year, and which were already made—a new uniform along with their turbans, made up in the present style. These have been packed in 2 separate bundles so that upon arrival in the Batavia roads they can be distributed to each of them. The amount thereof has been paid here from the treasury and is charged today to Batavia, in order to be deducted there from the pay earned by them or still to be earned, whether by the drillmaster or someone else to whom Your High Nobilities shall be pleased to assign the commission. Meanwhile, I wish that upon the arrival of their transport vessel, they may all appear before Your High Nobilities in health and in good condition. I flatter myself that you will not only be fully satisfied with their skill in drill, but will also thereby be encouraged to request more than one hundred head from here annually. In the meantime, with respect to Batavia, I shall take care that this number is met annually, until Your High Nobilities are pleased to order otherwise in that regard; and also see to assisting Malacca whenever the ministers there might happen to require any troops. realm had advanced, and had made himself master of several strongholds there; furthermore they say that the reason for this invasion is that the prince of Cochim had not been able or willing to pay a certain considerable sum of money that had been demanded of His Highness some months ago in the name of the Nabab, but was refused by him, for the reason that he supposed this demand was made without orders from the Nabab; that nevertheless, in order to discover the truth or falsehood thereof, having immediately dispatched envoys to His Excellency, these had returned with promises that His Cochim Highness would remain unmolested; that notwithstanding these assurances, the commander having renewed his demand with the addition of threats, a second embassy was sent by His Cochim Highness to the Nabab, who again, as before, had received a comforting answer; that this giving of good promises on the part of the Nabab had thus continued throughout the entire bad monsoon, or until the time that the aforesaid commander had made the invasion; the Cochim king having obtained verbal assurance from the Nabab only the day before that His Highness would not be molested; yet with the addition, however, that His Excellency being in want of money, the king must send him 5 lak ropias. After having reported this beforehand, the Malabar ministers continue that Cochim's king, having relied on the successive promises made by the Nabab, and living in the hope that he would treat him with consideration on account of the services previously rendered to him and the tribute given of 2 lak ropias, had made not the least preparation to be able to offer resistance; thus the case occurring, he had been forced to remain passive, as well as to give orders to his subjects to surrender the places before which the commander of the Nabab appeared without any resistance; which they then also had done, whereby His Excellency without any bloodshed had made himself master of the principal northern possessions of Cochim's king; who, having to remain looking on at the progress of his enemies with a good grace, had finally resolved to bind himself to the payment of 1 lak Ikarijsche pagoden in two terms, within two months. That hereupon the commander retreating with his troops, one had firmly thought that he would march off to Calicoet; but that, instead of doing this, being on his retreat at the latitude of the Company's fortress Chettua, he had seen fit to invade the Company's land there most unexpectedly, to invest that stronghold very closely, and to demand its surrender in the name of his master; that this had not only been communicated to Their Honors by the Chettua servants, but the Resident of Paponettij had also written to Their Honors that a part of the aforesaid troops having fallen into that conquest, had made a beginning with burning, robbing, and plundering, and thus had commenced open hostilities there as well: a report that had not only been confirmed by the Cranganoor servants, but these had moreover reported in a later letter that the general of the Nabab troops being already quartered in the residency Paponettij, had caused the Company's warehouse to be broken open and several houses standing near it to be burned; as also that some infantry and cavalry had already shown themselves before Cranganoer, fired some shots from afar, as well as burned down several houses standing within the limits. In the meantime, they had resolved to enlist as soon as possible a corps of Sepoys, if necessary up to fifteen hundred men; but since there was no opportunity in those parts to obtain good men, Their Honours requested that the enlistment be carried out here for them, provisionally up to 200 heads, with the necessary Sepoy officers. I, considering the critical circumstances in which the Company's possessions on the Malabar Coast find themselves, communicated this case on the 13th of this month to the Political Council, where we resolved by unanimous vote to comply as quickly as possible with the request of the Cochin Ministers, through the enlistment of 200 common Sepoys, alongside their superior and non-commissioned officers, whom we, as soon as they shall have been enlisted (which I hope will happen within 3 to 4 days at the latest), shall send under the command of one of the ensigns from our garrison, with double chaloupes via Mannar, or through Pamban strait to Cape Comorin, in order to march from there overland to Cochin. Meanwhile, I hope that Your High Honours will be pleased to be satisfied with this our disposition, of which we have already given notice to the Cochin Ministers; and while I shall continue to await Your High Honours' favourable letters in this regard, I fervently wish that by the relief from Ceylon and these troops, the Cochin Ministers may be enabled not only to ward off the threatening danger from themselves, but also to recover the Company's lands that have already been conquered. Regarding the related matters of Madras, of which I had the honour to inform Your High Honours in my humble separate letter of 15 October last; no change whatsoever has taken place in this regard up to now; likewise neither regarding the condition of the Tanjore Kingdom and its restored Prince; the only thing, however, which I judge my duty to impart to Your High Honours in that respect, is that the said Prince on the 16th of this month has taken in marriage his third and fourth wives, both descending from a Maratha line, in order, as is said, to produce an heir for his Kingdom, since he has not begotten any children with his previous wives. The father of the first wife is named Ragodie Mogate, this one being thus a sister of the first wife, and the father of the other is Segodie Mahadik, consequently this one being the daughter of the eldest brother of the second wife. Furthermore, no matters of importance having occurred here on the coast, I take the liberty, with Your High Honours' favourable approval, to conclude this by commending Your High Honours' very illustrious persons, as well as the state of the General Dutch East India Company, to the precious protection of Almighty God; while I remain with the utmost respect and high esteem.
