In effects, horses, vessels, slaves, and so forth, 5007 3/4 rupees. The said Resident requesting that the outstanding cash to the amount of 611 2/3 rupees be paid to him, declaring that he will regard it as a great favor in order to be able to defray the costs to Batavia with his family; and that these And that the remaining outstanding debts on paddy and pepper might in time be collected as if they were for the Honorable Company. From Your Right Honorable's very obedient, faithful servant Joost Breekpot, bookkeeper and former Resident of Paponetty. Having to his great obligation been favorably granted by the same to proceed to the main seat, Batavia, he uses the respectful freedom humbly to present to Your Right Honorable three notices of all such outstanding cash, effects, and goods as were left behind by him from his possessions on the 9th of October Ao 1776, at 1 o'clock after midnight, when he fled from the Paponetty residency with the Company's money to the fortress Cranganore, which he can declare under presentation of oath, 63 282 263 516 Thursday the 28th of November Ao 1776. to consist of the value of ropias 10272 3/4. Whereby it will respectfully appear to Your Right Honorable that the amount outstanding among the leaseholders and inhabitants, which latter are almost all subleaseholders, amounts to ropias 3403 1/7, namely Cash to 20 persons: ropias 611 1/3 9950 3/4 lbs pepper at 215 ropias: ropias 1990 1/2 2404 orangs zarr paddy to 30 ditto: ropias 801 1/3 Totals as above: ropias 3403 1/2. Thus, under your most favorable interpretation, it clearly shows that the inhabitants have satisfied the Honorable Company with my money. And this being deducted from the remainder of the cash resting with me under the ultimo of August last past with: ropias 3503 1/16 only leaves: ropias 100 1/12. Whereas I nevertheless, according to my bounden duty, have accounted for said full amounts of: ropias 3503 1/16, Together with the tobacco lease of the month of September amounting to: ropias 102 1/2 or together: ropias 3606 7/48, vide specification, to be accounted for by me. Otherwise, I would not have had to do so, as it speaks for itself, under your most favorable interpretation, that one cannot render more than has been received, and further account for it by sending the arrears later. Furthermore, as for the outstanding paddy and pepper to the amount of ropias 2791 1/12, that after the petitioner's departure the same may be collected by his attorneys, with the assistance of the incoming Resident, 283 265 Thursday the 28th of November Ao 1776. Resident, exactly as if it were truly for the Honorable Company, in which manner the petitioner has also always acted to accommodate the leaseholders, subleaseholders, and inhabitants, and which has had such an effect that never before his time was so much pepper, paddy, and lease money annually rendered or collected by any overseer of Paponetty. For which reasons the petitioner hopes to be allowed to enjoy the high favor, that his, as he flatters himself, reasonable request may be fully and generously granted by Your Right Honorable. And especially if the same will kindly consider that he, so to speak, stayed alone in the Residency until the last hour, with one Company lascar, as the remaining seven were all on their way to Cranganore with Company letters from Chettua and Paponetty, so that between 12 and 1 o'clock at night the petitioner received word that the assistant and interpreter of Chettua and the corporal of the post Pullicarro were already under arrest by the army chief Sardar Khan, and Chettua had thereupon also been surrounded, such that the letters for Your Right Honorable were brought by sea with a small vessel, behind Triparetty to the Residency. 517

Hereafter the Governor said that he had summoned the junior merchant and secretary of police to appear at this meeting, but that he had sent word that he was indisposed; that this has now happened many times, and that he had also attended the meeting a few times somewhat intoxicated, in such a manner that it was plainly visible; that His Honour had reproached him about this now and then, and had also been minded to correct him severely about this, but had long accommodated this upon promised improvement and the additional intercession of the members, who testified to have full knowledge of this, in the trust that he would fulfill his promise and improve himself; but Saturday the 21st of December Anno 1776 a longer indulgence makes him go from bad to worse reasoning about this that to his regret he experiences the contrary, and that the secretary now already many times, whenever he was called to any work, merely sends word that he is indisposed, whereas he usually lies about here and there in the house very drunk, and matters are now again in such a state with him; how it can sufficiently be deduced from this that further indulgence would make this man go from bad to worse; how such behavior of a secretary in ordinary times, much less in such critical circumstances in which one is at present, and in which everyone always and at every moment, especially a secretary, ought to be sober and ready, is intolerable, and it is therefore highly necessary to correct him publicly regarding this continuous misconduct; which having been deliberated upon, Saturday the 21st of December Anno 1776 suspended from the performance of his office to see whether he will improve and whether one can let him function again or not for the submission of their nominations it was unanimously approved to suspend the said secretary Schutz from the performance of his office until further disposition of this Government, in order to see whether this will not effect so much in him that he changes his way of living, so as to be able to let him perform his function again and attend the meetings, or not.
