Via Ceylon we had the honor on the 2nd of this month to receive Your Right Honorable Highly Esteemed Lordships' Surat Duplicate very very respected letter of 10 October 1775, along with the appended extracts and the requisition of return goods, and we shall maintain dutiful compliance with what was ordered therein. The first undersigned, having been appointed by Their High Nobilities as Director of this place, the news of which he received on 17 October last at Cochin, departed thence for here with the first presenting opportunity in accordance with the aforementioned orders of Their High Nobilities, and arrived here on the 2nd of this month. On the same day, and only a few hours before his arrival, the former Director Martinus Joan Bosman abandoned this his office and placed himself under the protection of the English Government, which, upon our reclamation made, declared to have granted him protection, adding 4. that they could not have refused it to him; and since we knew beforehand that all further démarches in this regard would be fruitless, we let the matter rest there in accordance with what was recorded in the Resolution of the 3rd of this month. The aforementioned newly arrived Director takes the liberty, regarding the state in which he found this Directorship and what has been performed therein by him, to refer to the copy of his secret letter to Their High Nobilities which is attached hereto, and has the honor hereby to assure Your Right Honorable Highly Esteemed Lordships as sincerely as most respectfully that he will do everything that can depend on him to provide Your Right Honorable Highly Esteemed Lordships with the required satisfaction in the management of affairs and to earn the trust that the aforementioned Their High Nobilities have been pleased to place in him. 7. than that the aforementioned ship was discharged of some goods loaded therein. With the same, I arrived here at the Roadstead on the 2nd of this month, and went ashore that very same evening. Upon my arrival at the Company's yard, the Second Sluijsken informed me that Director Bosman, that very same day a few hours before my arrival, had defected to the English and placed himself under their protection. He was immediately thereafter reclaimed in the name of the Company by a commission consisting of two members from the Council, but the English Chief, Mr. Boddam, stated plainly that he had granted protection to the aforementioned former Director and could not refuse it to him, and that if the Company had any claims against him, one had to address oneself to Bombay regarding this matter. It is clear that all further attempts with the English to retrieve him would have been futile, wherefore I considered it best, in accordance with the record noted in the resolution of the 3rd of this month, to take no further steps in that regard. The day after my arrival, I had myself recognized in the assembly, and immediately began by informing myself of the state of this Directorship. In the specific administrations, I have not found that anything of note is missing; the main treasury, which was taken up immediately, also balances with the trade books. However, as soon as I began to audit the account of the Brokers, which, as far as I have been able to ascertain, was never properly balanced nor closed in all the time that the former Director Bosman was in administration—probably because Mr. Bosman was indebted to these Brokers for large sums during the entire period of his rule, and consequently avoided everything that could in any way resemble a settlement—I say, as soon as I began this, and pushed this work forward with some earnestness, it caused a very great dismay in the Second Sluijsken, who upon my arrival here was living in a country house outside. As it appeared to me afterwards, he fell into the suspicion that, on account of the flight of Mr. Bosman, he alone would be held accountable for the whole, and thus also for that which Director Bosman would have had to answer for had he remained. However, through my admonitions and the assurance that I did not think Your High Excellencies would view the matter in that way, I brought him back from an ill step about to be taken or perhaps already carried out, and thereby prevented the further consequences of a rash moment. The Second Sluijsken has since, without my having to ask him, come to live on the yard, where he has also already transferred all his goods and possessions; on which account, and because of the circumstances that accompanied this case, I hope that Your High Excellencies will be pleased to overlook it with kindness. This encounter has meanwhile caused me to believe, in the execution of Your High Excellencies' orders, that I ought to make use of the qualifications which Your High Excellencies were so good as to give me, to be permitted to act according to the findings of the cases regarding all the points instructed to me in Your High Excellencies' honored letters of 26 July last, and in such a manner as required, in my view, by the service and the interest of the Company. With a too literal and strict execution thereof, I feared I would bring matters into even greater confusion. In consideration of this, and seeing that hereby matters are only slightly delayed, I hope that Your High Excellencies will favorably approve the resolutions adopted on the 13th of this month concerning the debts of the brokers; and that, now that the former Director Bosman was gone and the remaining participants' possessions are under the jurisdiction of the Company, I did not make the members who took part in the decisions from which arose the expenditure for the renewal of the stone staircase and the setting of a piling deposit the sum of 35000 rupees—which, in the case of many, could not have happened except by way of execution—as well as that, regarding the price increase on the linens, I let the Second Sluijsken suffice with the security that the Company holds on his person and goods instead of the security ordered by Your High Excellencies, which was presently impossible for him, considering the items of indemnification that are already charged to him, whereby no one who has anything to lose would have been willing to take such a suretyship upon himself. Regarding the debts of the Brokers, with whom I at first had very great trouble settling accounts, I think I can assure Your High Excellencies with confidence that the 155 to 160,000 rupees which they have agreed to pay on account before the end of April will come in. Gradually, this old debt of the Brokers will thus noticeably decrease, and I promise Your High Nobilities that I will do everything that depends on me to have it brought in promptly, though whether they will finally be able to pay in full seems very problematic to me. Meanwhile, if the Brokers comply with the above, and before one has first seen what can be obtained from them through amicable ways and persuasive means, to tackle them harshly, I do not think is advisable for the interest of the Company; this would not only ruin their credit entirely, but it is known moreover that the Natives have a thousand opportunities to embezzle their possessions, and it is thus to be feared that if one were to take that path at once, they will manage to conceal the best part of their goods from the Company. I clearly understand that all these are so many more reasons to hold the Secunde Sluijsken accountable, insofar as we have been charged with this by Your High Nobilities, yet because his possessions meanwhile remain at the disposal of the Company, I hope that Your High Nobilities will favorably please to permit that he, for the present and until one proceeds to use compelling means against the Brokers themselves to test what can ultimately be obtained from them, may remain excused from the immediate payment of their arrears, for as much as his share therein amounts to. By the aforementioned Resolution of 13 December, Your High Nobilities will find two items amounting together to rop=s 40240 7/8, which the Brokers claim should be credited to their account. That the former Director Bosman drew these monies from the funds of the Brokers from the moneychanger seems beyond doubt, both from what the Brokers have demonstrated regarding this, and from what I have been able to deduce from the private reports of various persons whom I have questioned thereafter and who have more or less knowledge of the domestic affairs of the former Director. I indeed do not believe that the Brokers remained ignorant during all that time that these two items were taken by the former Director Bosman from their monies from the moneychanger and spent for his private use, but because, as I said above, no complete accounting and liquidation was held with the Brokers during the entire administration of Mr. Bosman, at which these items should have come into dispute, it will be difficult to convince the Brokers that they acquiesced in this conduct of the former Director Bosman. Moreover, it is indeed to be feared that, as nothing is now to be obtained from Director Bosman, the Company will not be able to collect everything from the Brokers at the final settlement of accounts; and if I may present my humble opinion in this matter, I would almost think that one could give the Brokers some degree of hope on this point that the Company will in due course, and if they promptly pay their remaining debt, take their objections regarding these two items into favorable consideration. One third part thereof remains nonetheless chargeable to the Secunde Sluijsken. Until now, I have had no time to properly inspect the work done for the renewal of the stone staircase and the placement of a piling on the northeast side of the shipyard, which I will nevertheless do at once, and I will have the honor of sending Your High Nobilities my report thereon along with my findings regarding the newly constructed buildings with the ship Ouwerkerk. Meanwhile, this much I can say about it, that it appears to me that it was very necessary to provide in some manner against the further encroachment of the water on that side. The stone staircase immediately adjoining the shipyard was already beginning to sink noticeably, which gave ample reason to fear for the stone dam which on that side must stem all the force of the current, which dam must necessarily be maintained in good condition to prevent great damage from being caused from time to time to the remaining masonry by the flowing water. I do not think, however, that it was strictly necessary to execute this work in such an expensive manner, and to spend for it such a considerable sum as was written off for it. The reimbursements ordered by Your High Nobilities by letters of 31 December 1773, 18 August 1774, and 2 August 1775 to the sum of rop=s 411232 have been paid in cash, except for that which, according to the Resolution of 4 November last, was charged to the pay accounts of the former Director Bosman and some other Members for their share in the sum of rox:s 10159 15/16 written off in 1773 for making fireworks, etc., and by virtue of which debit Director Bosman, on the day he absented himself, still remained in arrears for rex=s 1607 2/3 on his aforementioned account, for which, among others, his guarantor, the Junior Merchant Pontag, has already been held accountable. 12. for the repair of the smalschip the Mosselschulp to the sum of rep:s 509 1/16, I have not yet been able to verify what each party's share therein amounts to, which I shall do at the earliest opportunity. Regarding the expenses incurred for the restoration of the Hospital, which according to the Surat Resolutions of 14: Aug: 1775 were to be charged to the Company's account; the one anchor and three grapnels lent in 1775 to the former Director Bosman; the mast timbers which were knocked down to the Brokers in 1775; and the 15000: rupees imposed on the former Director Bosman as compensation, I take the liberty of referring to the general letter, in which all these entries are answered. Extraordinary expenditures of which Your High Excellencies have not yet been informed have not been made. Nor has anything further been negotiated since with the Marathas to obtain passes for the Company's ships. Of what was lost on the smalschip the Mosselschulp I have already had an account of proceeds made, but since in the Memorandum inserted into the Surat Resolution of 13. June 1772 several several entries were recorded for expenses incurred to obtain Maratha passes for the Company's ships, and which consequently do not seem to belong on this account, I shall examine the resolutions concerning this more closely, and then execute the order of Your High Excellencies. Pursuant to Your High Excellencies' order, I summoned the linen suppliers to the meeting, and, as appears from what was recorded in the resolution of the 13th of this month, they acknowledged having received on delivery a sum of rop=s 135000: being as much as has been credited to their account in the Trade books for that purpose. The inventory reports not having been received, the general transfer could not yet be executed, which I shall nevertheless cause to be done at the earliest opportunity. The Nawab has already asked me repeatedly for an advance of money on the tolls, which I have had politely refused him, and if this time too, after the toll account has been settled, I must decide upon a small advance, which I nevertheless hope will not be necessary, I shall make it as moderate as possible, and 13 and shall see to bringing this bad custom gradually into disuse again. Concerning the taxes which the Nawab has levied on all incoming and outgoing goods on behalf of the English toll collector, no move has been made for some time now as far as the Company's goods are concerned, and I do not suspect that further difficulties will arise regarding this. Concerning the statement made in the Memorandum of arrived ships and vessels regarding 25000: lb: of Japanese copper and 19000: lb: of coffee beans, which were said to have been brought from Batavia to Bombay by an English ship commanded by Captain Price, I have not yet been able to obtain any further information. I shall nevertheless do my best to learn to what extent one can rely on what has been said about it. I have been here too short a time to share with Your High Excellencies in detail my thoughts on the state of this Directorate, especially regarding domestic matters; meanwhile I dare say this much about it, that it appears to me that the establishment is too large for what is to be done here for the Company, and it cannot be set much lower. As soon as time permits me somewhat, I shall direct my thoughts further to this, and send to Your High Excellencies a plan according to which I think matters here can be arranged, without this needing to have any influence on the outward formalities that one is accustomed to observe here for the sake of the Natives and the foreign Nations. The prices that were negotiated for the trade goods brought with the ship Venus I hope will meet with the approval of Your High Excellencies. Peace has now been reasonably restored here in this country, and I flatter myself that I shall thereby be able to have the satisfaction of managing the Company's Trade to the satisfaction of Your High Excellencies. In this confidence I have drawn up the Demand for the trade goods, but regarding the sugar I must remark that the large quantities which the ship's officers bring for their permitted cargo create very harmful competition for the Company. This sugar is for the greater part sold to the English, 14. sold, which sometimes causes trouble of a harmful consequence. I therefore take the liberty to propose to Your High Excellencies whether, in order to prevent all this, it would not be better to reintroduce the order of Your High Excellencies of 31. Aug: 1751, which has gradually fallen into disuse, and the resolutions taken pursuant thereto at Surat on 4. and 25. March 1752 concerning the permitted cargo, and in accordance therewith to pay to the captains and other officers the advances obtained on the quantities allowed to them, whereby the space in the ships remains entirely available for the Company's cargo. The late Councillor Extraordinary Senff, in his Memorandum on the sugar Trade written on 1. ships can now deliver, and the Company would thereby have greater control of the market. Concerning the contracting of the linens for the coming year, I have spoken as yet only superficially, but as raw cotton is now reasonably cheap, I hope to succeed in procuring it to the satisfaction of Your Right Nobilities. The linens that are now being shipped were for the most part already received before my arrival. Those delivered since then I have gone to inspect myself, and they appear to me to be reasonably good. This inspection is now carried out at a large table by all the Members of the Council together, which causes a certain amount of confusion, and whereby one can at least never see, when inferior goods slip in, by whom they were accepted. I have therefore resolved to divide the Members who carry out the inspection two by two at separate tables, and to have each place his own distinct mark upon the goods that are accepted by them, in order to make them more attentive. I shall furthermore always attend the inspections in person to be able to keep a better eye on everything. 15. It causes very great trouble and inconvenience in the administration here that we are not permitted to receive the linens at our wharf, but the Government seems so completely opposed to this that I think any proposals concerning it would at present be useless; yet because, as far as I can gather, one of the principal reasons for this is the collection of duties, in which several parties have a share, and the fear of smuggling, I shall look into whether some means can be devised to reassure the Government on that point, and whether I might not then gradually bring about some change in this matter. In the hope that our humble letters, dispatched on the 25th of December of the past year 1775, via the ships Ouwerkerk and Overhoud, in original and duplicate, will have been fortunate enough to have been presented to Your High Excellencies in due time, we have deemed it our duty—even though we ourselves presently have no vessel at hand for the dispatch of this—to now prepare the general report of all our proceedings in the Master's service during the course of a full year, in order thereby to follow the old custom and furthermore to be able to present the same to Your High Excellencies at the first occurring opportunity, which we have lacked since the departure of the aforementioned Company vessels until now, if not before the impending bad monsoon, then at least after 21. the end of the same. And proceeding thereto most humbly in the hope of Your High Excellencies' high approval, we shall—since regarding ships and vessels, as well as Moorish seafarers, we currently have nothing more to report than what we already had the honor to bring to Your High Excellencies' high knowledge in our aforementioned missive of the 25th of December 1775—make a beginning with the main section on vessels belonging to this place, of which, in conformity with Your High Excellencies' respected orders, the smack-ship De Mosselschulp was sold at public auction on the 9th of February to the highest bidder for Rops 8425:—, with all its ammunition and equipment as carried in the Honorable Company's books, having judged and found by experience that this would be the most advantageous for the Honorable Company, since neither the ammunition nor the equipment could be of any principal service or utility to it, and would in no way outweigh the higher amount that has now been realized in comparison to the bare hull, which aforesaid funds, as shown by the notes to our resolution of the 27th of the aforementioned month of February, have also been properly deposited into the treasury. 22. While we have the honor, pursuant to and in obedient compliance with Your High Excellencies' requisition by missive of the 2nd of August last, humbly to report regarding the expenses incurred for the said smack-ship, both for its recovery and otherwise, as well as what services that vessel has since rendered again: That the expenditures in five various embassies, both to the Poona Court and to Bassein and Gheriah, with all the successive gifts made, have amounted, according to the specifications and accounts inserted into the resolution of the 13th of June 1772, to a sum of Rops 7222:7/2. And that the expenses for refitting this vessel, item the equipment and ammunition goods delivered to it, according to the specification of the former Equipment Supervisor van der Segge, recorded in the resolution of the 8th of December 1772, have amounted to a sum of in cash Rops 3486:1/64 and from inventory 3330:/44, or together 6816:12/24. Consequently, all expenditures and expenses booked to the name of the smack-ship De Mosselschulp would amount to a sum of Rops 14039:1/24. Yet, although this sum in respect of the expenditure on the voyages to the Poona Court, etc., and the gifts presented there, was indeed solely written off and charged to the name of the aforementioned recently reclaimed smack-ship, it is nevertheless certain and beyond all contradiction that those funds were not expended solely for the service of that vessel, but that it was booked under that name as having been a concurrent motive for undertaking the aforesaid embassies and expenditures. and its surrounding lands, seeing that the fugitive Pretender Prince of the Marhettas, Ragoe Bawa, and on whose account the English had taken up arms; as he was unwilling to submit to the articles stipulated in his regard in the peace treaty, retreated towards this city with his troops numbering 18 to 20000 men, at the same time plundering and devastating in the most pitiful manner all villages, gardens, and houses situated hereabouts, as well as obstructing all import and export, without the Nabab or the English gentlemen attempting to oppose or prevent this through the least force, whereby the shortage of provisions not only was daily increasing, but one had moreover grounded reasons to fear that this Ragoe Bawa would often out of desperation make an unexpected attack on Souratta itself, and devastate and plunder the entire outer city, as well as seeing ourselves as well as all the Company's effects in that case exposed to the very greatest danger, and one moreover would have not the least assistance to expect from the English, who would surely all retreat inside the Castle and defend themselves from there; wherefore we were indeed compelled on the 8th of this month to prolong the aforesaid resolution, namely to leave De Jonge Petrus under its equipage, and to keep the crew on the same in service until the ultimo of that month, in the hope that everything would be decided by then. But since this has not yet happened, and the robbing and plundering continues on its course, even to within a musket shot beneath the Castle and our wharf on the opposite side of the river, we have also not dared to discharge the said crew as of this date, and the same are thus still actively in service, in which we, in hopes of a favorable interpretation and approval of our aforementioned resolutions taken in this regard, shall also have to have them continue until such time as one shall have seen whither the said Nagoe Bawa will betake himself, which is expected shortly, since the army dispatched from Poena in order to capture him, Nagoe Bawa, by force, or to compel him to submit to the concluded peace treaty and to accompany them willingly, has already been on the march for a long time, and is presently not far from this city. The voyages which the aforesaid vessels, not counting their lying on guard duty and the unloading and loading of the ships, have made during the course of the good monsoon, consist solely of the following, to wit: On the 23rd of October, the narrow-ship De Mosselschulp and the horrij De Merwe departed for Brootchia to fetch return cargoes, as well as the covered horrij De Dordrecht for Jamboeser. On the 20th of November, the said narrow-ship was sent again to Brootchia for the purpose aforesaid. And on the 19th of January, the narrow-ship De Jonge Petrus, together with the horrij De Dordrecht, sailed thither once again for the conveyance of the arriving Senior Merchant Jacob Igerman Bocquet, as well as the annual presents and writing materials, as appears from the notes kept thereof with our Resolutions of the 17th of November and 5th of December of last year; item the 23rd of January of this year. In regard to the write-offs and entries, and in the first place the ordinary annual ones in that regard, we have at the session of the 28th of September 1775, upon a report and finding delivered there by the Secunde Sluijsken, formed from the memorial submitted by the Warehouse Master Van Citters concerning such merchandise as has been weighed out and delivered from the parcels of 177 1/2, 177 2/3, 177 3/4, and 177 4/5 in a full bookkeeping year or from primo September 1774 until ultimo August 1775, resolved to make the just-named Warehouse Master make good by purchase the 278 7/8 lb of red minium and 103 1/4 lb of Japanese camphor found short over and above the permitted write-offs, but to credit him on the other hand for 32 3/4 pounds of quicksilver, as being the amount of the 1/2 per cent warehouse wastage due to him on a quantity of 6392 pounds, as well as to have written off to the debit of the profit account and transferred to spoiled spices 268 lb of dust and cloves of cloves and 393 lb of worm-eaten nutmegs, which have already been sent to the capital with the ship Ouwerkerk. And furthermore, there having also come before the meeting of the 3rd of April of this year a finding drawn up by the aforesaid Head Administrator, annexed to a memorial from the Warehouse Master concerning the overweight and underweight occurring on the merchandise successively weighed out and entirely exhausted from the parcels of 177 1/2, 177 2/3, 177 3/2, and 177 4/5, we have solely resolved, seeing that the powdered and candy sugar were delivered in conformity with the permitted write-offs, and that the 99 lb of sheet lead in cases remaining in the warehouses were delivered upon warrant for the service of the equipage warehouses and thus accounted for, to have the judicial commissioners who assisted at the successive weighings of the spices take the oath, since according to the aforesaid finding there was a shortage on the mace of no less than 74 3/4 per cent roughly or 332 3/4 lb, on the cloves 4 1/8 per cent or 1657 3/4 lb, and on the cinnamon 6 1/2 per cent, 10 1/2 lb.

We take the liberty, however, to note here for the consideration of Your High Noblenesses that the tare of the packages of mace is generally heavier than is charged towards this place, and that therefore the aforesaid exorbitant underweight of 332¾ lb or 13¾ per cent must also partly be attributed thereto. Furthermore, we had to write off from the trade books such quantity of half a last of unusable rye as was brought here with the ship De Vrouwe Geertruijda in the year 1774, in accordance with our resolution of 28 August 1775, after we had previously attempted to dispose of it by public sale. In the session of 3 April, a report having been submitted by the Chief Administrator Sluijsken, compiled from two invoices of accounts sent hither from the main office via Malabar, the one dated 19 August 1774 and the other 31 August 1775, we made dispositions on that day concerning this as is noted in the margin of the said report which is inserted in the aforesaid resolution, and to which we take the liberty very respectfully to refer. We could conclude this main section herewith, were it not that, trusting in the in every way celebrated generosity of Your High Noblenesses, we once again most respectfully venture to implore Your High Noblenesses for a favorable exemption regarding the compensations imposed upon us for the illuminations etc. made in the year 1773 on the occasion of the birth of a young Hereditary Prince of the Illustrious House of Orange and Nassau, as also for the amount of half of the rent of the private vessel De Wilhelmina. Our humble arguments that in both those cases we acted strictly on the foundation of orders and preceding examples, as well as with the most sincere concern for the master's welfare, we have taken the liberty to show Your High Noblenesses most humbly more than once, and we therefore do not dare to fatigue Your High Noblenesses again with the repetition thereof in this, although we nevertheless pray once more that the same may be taken into consideration to such an extent that we may be relieved from these charges, if not for the whole, then at least for a part. Concerning the purchase or gathering of returns for the past year 1775, we had the honor, in our very humble letter of 30 April of the past year, to bring to Your High Noblenesses' obedient knowledge the obstacles which prevented us at that time from bringing it to a conclusion, and the well-founded suspicion of a general increase in the prices for linens has since been all too truly verified, because we, having postponed from time to time the contracting of this procurement occasioned by the exorbitant demanded increase of 20 per cent on all linens above the previous year's prices, as appears from the declaration of the Director contained in the resolution of 14 June, were finally on 14 August compelled, for the motives detailed at length therein, to let the procurement of the goods for the Fatherland and the Cape take effect with an increase of 18 per cent on the linens that are produced in Brootchia, Brodera and the villages situated thereabouts, and of 15 per cent on those that are manufactured here. It has been as impossible for the first-undersigned as for us in general to have deducted anything from this, and we therefore very humbly request Your High Noblenesses most favorably to approve this increase for this year with Your High Noblenesses' sanction, having, on account of the aforementioned high prices, and because all the East Indian returns of the year 1774 were still on hand and probably could not be dispatched before December next, excused ourselves from carrying out the procurement on the requisition for India for the year 1775 at that time, in the hope of a favorable interpretation. The memorandum of the prices and general amounts of this procurement are inserted in the aforesaid resolution of 14 August, to which we take the liberty very respectfully to refer, noting here in a word that the entire procurement amounted to ƒ129376:3:8. The contract and the procurement of the linens, cotton cloths, and yarns required for the Fatherland and India for this year also took effect in our session of 23 January last, with a reduction of 8 per cent on the Brootchia goods and 5 per cent on the remaining goods below the previous year's prices. We judged that we absolutely had to proceed to this the sooner the better, seeing that at that time under all circumstances it appeared more likely that the war would continue rather than that a lasting and fortunate peace would be concluded, and one therefore had to consider oneself very fortunate to have been able to negotiate the aforementioned reduction, and we trust that Your High Noblenesses will take fair account of the thoroughly unfortunate and critical situation of Souratta and its surrounding districts, and that the outcome has so well answered to our expectations.

With respect to the demand for merchandise and provisions, we refer most respectfully to our humble letter of 25 December last; we have the honor, with respect to the carpenterings and repairs, to report most obediently: that the ordinary annual work consisted solely of shifting the tiles and repairing the roofs, etc., of all the Company's buildings at the wharf, as well as in the Company's old, very dilapidated lodge, the tent, and some outbuildings, regarding which two specifications served at our meeting of 28 September 1775: namely one from the purveyor Monte, to the amount of Rupees 469: 44, of which, however, Rupees 75: 8 had to be spent extraordinarily on the occasion of some damage suffered during a severe hurricane that arose from 18 to 22 May past, which incident not having occurred, that account would have yielded only an unfavorable difference of Rupees 3/24 in comparison with the preceding year; and one from the equipment overseer Boelen to the amount of Rupees 1383: 34, whereof Rupees 1251: 43 in cash and Rupees 131: 39 out of stock, creating a difference with that of the year before of Rupees 295: 40, this increase also being occasioned principally by the necessary repairs to most of the roofs.

48. roofs of the dwellings on the wharf due to damages suffered on the occasion of the aforementioned hurricane, we have approved both of those accounts, while we likewise implore Your Right Honourables' high approval regarding this matter, as well as for the Kop„s 150:—. granted at the session of the 14th of August for carrying out some required repairs of the lodge at Amed-Maad as well as the relaying of the roof tiles; and the reasons that prompted us to consent to these thoroughly burdensome expenses having already been discussed in our respectful rescription of the 25th of December often mentioned, and our aforesaid resolution of the 14th of August, we take the liberty, to avoid duplicate recitals, to refer thereto. Regarding the extraordinary matters, we had the honour in our general respectful letter of the 30th of April of the previous year to note the sagging of the Company's hospital, and that we had decided to have the same repaired by the Moedij for his own account, but this servant having presented a petition to us on the 3rd of July following, in which he came to demonstrate very satisfactorily that the aforesaid cited accident could by no means be attributed to his actions or due to neglect of duty during the construction of that building, but rather 49. indeed to an undermining beyond his ability to prevent by a species of field rats, known here by the name of Goesen, and that this undermining, accompanied by very heavy rains, as well as the height and weight of that structure itself, had brought about the sagging of some uprights; and since we were fully convinced of all the man's representations in this matter, and also that his well-known destitute and impoverished condition does not permit him to be able to furnish any expenses from his private purse, as well as that we were, in addition, fully persuaded that in the construction of these dwellings he had had no other than a few permitted profits, we therefore resolved on the day aforesaid to have this repair carried out for the Company's account, as has also taken effect, and of which the account, inserted in the Resolution of the 14th of August of the previous year, has been approved to the amount of Rop„s 307:30:, while we most respectfully request Your Right Honourables for your most favourable approval in this matter. While the extraordinary expenses solely consisted of a gift to the fugitive pretender of the Maretthas prince on the occasion that he had come to retreat to this city, as we could not well excuse ourselves from this, for the reason that he was honored here with all the public marks of honor of a legitimate prince, and was greeted with gifts by the Nabab as well as by the other Regents and most prominent merchants, together with the other European Nations. 52. It being at that time also still entirely uncertain whether he, Ragoe Bawa, through the aid of the English and the great following which he still had among the Maretthas, might not frequently reascend the Throne, and wherefore good policy required him, along with others, to be cajoled as much as possible. General comparison of the Profits and Charges against the established budget with added reasons from which the differences have their origin; as for the profits, there was set by the Memorandum of Retrenchment dated 9th of May 1755 a sum of ƒ867000:—:—, which now reduced by one fifth or in heavy money amounts to ƒ693600:—:—. And the same amount only to: ƒ274027:10:8. Thus less: ƒ419572:9:8. The origin of this so astonishingly disadvantageous difference with respect to the profits is principally to be attributed to: Primo. From a smaller supply of sugar, as it was indeed set in the Memorandum of Retrenchment at 5300 Candies or 2000000 Pounds, whereas on the contrary in this fiscal year only 1700 Candies of that sweetness were brought.
