Likewise, it was resolved to promote the sailors Gerrit Outmans and Theunis Cornelisse to quartermasters at ƒ 16 per month; as well as the soldier Iohan Coenraad Morell to Corporal at ƒ 14 under the garrison here. But concerning the fear of Their High Mightinesses that the stipulation made in the 12th article of the said contract would not be observed for the Subah, which entails that in case the Subah should think fit to cede again the aforementioned places and lands, namely the seaside places of Nagore and Topotorre, the lands of Tirupoondi, and the province of Kivalur, that such cession would then occur to none other than the Dutch Company: It was resolved to represent to Them with due respect that what was contracted with the Subah in this article must be considered null and void due to the great change that has occurred since in the Tanjore kingdom, where the prince has been restored again; as well as the fear that one had that the English would demand the seaside place of Nagore from the Nawab or strengthen it by constructing fortifications; and that one is thus relieved of this fear, and shall now solely continue to hope for the good administration of the prince over the entire kingdom and especially regarding Nagore and the lands bordering the Company's boundaries. Mr. Satter, by removing him from his post upon the complaints of the Jaggenaikpoeram and Palicol chiefs, and summoning him to Madras, one flatters oneself with a pleasant prospect for the collection for this year; especially if the warring parties leave the upper and these lower lands in peace and quiet; and that in this case, one has well-founded hope that the collection of cloths will increase in quantity from year to year and improve in quality and goodness, as the collection just completed shows, which amounted to 2156 bales, whereas in anno 1775 only 2083 bales, or 73 fewer, were collected. The Gentlemen Majores having further been pleased to conform to the arrangement made here to have all the linens from the subordinate factories transferred hither, in order to be examined and assorted; it has thus been resolved to continue herewith for the future, in the expectation that their High Nobilities, High Respectabilities will discover upon the annual receipt of the returns that the goodness of the linens has thereby been noticeably improved. The 13th of January 1777. With regard to the goodness of the linens brought to the Netherlands with the ships Alkemade and De Jonge Lieve, the Gentlemen Majores having referred to what had been set down concerning this by the same in the Demands of Returns for the year 1777; it has likewise been resolved to conduct oneself respectfully in that regard toward the provisional answer now departing concerning the aforesaid Demands. Concerning the sowed cloths, it having been regarded by their High Nobilities, High Respectabilities as well done that this council, in order to obtain more elucidation regarding the goodness of those cloths from Jaggenaikpoeram, had summoned a piece of each assortment of the English, together with as many pieces of the Company's collection, in order to be able to be confronted against each other, and having at the same time been ordered to make further attempts in order to be informed with certainty of the place where the English obtain their fine cotton yarn, and the price they pay for it; it has thus been resolved regarding these matters to answer most respectfully that of the aforesaid sowed cloths of the English, a piece of each assortment, together with The 13th of January 1777. as many pieces of the Company's collection, were presented to them for inspection in anno 1774 with the ship De Pallas, together with a report from appointed examiners; and that one has again most earnestly urged the Jaggenaikpoeram and Paliacatte chiefs to make further attempts to discover the place where the English buy their fine cotton yarn, and the price they pay for it.
