The reasons for the increase and decrease consist of the following; to wit: Ordinary Rations: Less ƒ 65:13:8 The board money provided to soldiers and sailors is, due to a smaller number of persons in this Book Year, the cause of this slight decrease. Ordinary Expenses: Less ƒ 2098:6:8 In the previous year, 367:43 rupees more was spent on ordinary and extraordinary postage than in this year; furthermore, in the previous year some copper works and other goods were made for the service of the office, which was not necessary this year; the remainder was saved on various items through economy in household management. Extraordinary Expenses: More ƒ 2489:1:8 Written off to this account as an extraordinary occurrence was the expense incurred in refloating the narrow-ship De Jonge Petrus, which had been cast ashore during an unexpected high flood, along with the repairs of the damage suffered on that occasion to the Great Pier, and the making of a new gate to enclose the shipyard on the river side, which was washed away with the same flood, all of which, according to the specification inserted into the Resolution of 17 January A:o 1772, cost 2071:30 rupees, from which this increase arose. 362 367 Carpentry and Repairs: Less ƒ 1582:—:— Last year a new fence was made around the Linen Tent and two awnings with iron pins above the water gates of the shipyard, which together cost over ƒ 1000:—:—; the remainder was saved through economy. Disposition on the Report of the Debtors and Creditors. To the Right Honorable Worshipful Willem Jacob van de Graaff, Director and Chief Ruler of this Directorate, together with the Council. Statement of Account No. 176 of the year 1774/1775, No. 7 and 8. Right Honorable Worshipful Sir, Gentlemen. Upon the closing of the Trade Books of this Directorate for the year 1776/1777, the undersigned and Keeper of those Trade Folios found such Debtors, Creditors, and outstanding Accounts as follow below and overleaf, with a brief demonstration of their origin, to wit: Account of Contracting: 150000 rupees or 180000 guilders. This amount was issued, on three warrants granted by the Right Honorable Worshipful Director dated 24 May and 31 August 1777, for the delivery of returns out of the Honorable Company's main treasury, to the Honorable Company's brokers in excess of what, up to the last-mentioned date, has been provided and brought in by them to the linen suppliers in linens, silk fabrics, or cotton yarns. Disposition: The opposite Account will find its clearance when all the returns both for the Netherlands and for the Indies shall have been brought in, to be dispatched in December next with the ships Stavenisse and Jonge Lieve. Secret Negotiations: 21000 rupees or 25200 guilders. According to the warrant granted by the former Director Bosman dated 2 March of the year 1774, the aforementioned amount was issued to him out of the Honorable Company's main treasury for further accountability of the said former Ruler. Disposition: Under the business conducted above, the trade servants have already been ordered to examine further whether the opposite 21000 rupees are, according to their High Mightinesses' intention, included under the 5000 rupees for secret expenditures and 6000 rupees for the gift to the Maratha Court. The Wooden Revetment outside the Northeast Land Gate of the Honorable Company's Yard: 63333 rupees 16 annas or 76000 guilders. As appears from the specifications inserted in the resolution of this Directorate dated 20 September of the year 1774, there was paid in cash for materials, labor wages, and so forth, and issued in goods from the Honorable Company's materials warehouse, and also, subject to the favorable approval of their High Mightinesses, written off to the debit of this Directorate: 68702 rupees 24 annas. Added to this, in the bookkeeping year 1775/1776, debited to this account for the travel expenses, house rent, and double board money charged from Colombo hither and paid here to the Engineer Willem Loewe, who came here from Ceylon for the inspection, to the amount of: 543 rupees 7 annas, making 69245 rupees 24 annas. Pursuant to the Political Council's resolution of 7 August last, the pay account of me, the undersigned, was debited for 1/48 part of 35900 rupees, which were ordered by their High Mightinesses as compensation for what was spent on the former Director and further members of the Political Council, which amount was credited to this account in Trade Journal page 151 with: 5912 rupees 8 annas. Remains, as overleaf: 63333 rupees 16 annas. Disposition: To the debit of this Account shall also come the house rent and double board money that the Engineer Loewe has enjoyed after the ultimate of August, and must further enjoy until he departs again for Ceylon with the Company's ship, as well as the expenses incurred at the requisition of the said Loewe on the Revetment to enable him to perform the complete examination; meanwhile it has been decided to let this Account continue thus in the Books until their High Mightinesses shall have formally disposed of the Report of the aforesaid Engineer and of what has been noted down on that subject in today's meeting, and what shall be further discovered and disclosed.
