Decreased Charge Items making up 6421:12:8, Ordinary Expenses - - ƒ 300:18:— declined on account of very economized Expenses for the daily Housekeeping Extraordinary Ditto ƒ 37:14:— because this book year has required so much less Freight wages than that of 1773/4 Ditto of Sloops and vessels ƒ 5659:5:— Arising on the one hand because this Entry this time had by far not as many Batavia charges to bear as the year before, and on the other hand having fewer required repairs; this also contributed quite a lot. Hospital Expenses - - - - ƒ 26:15:8 the usual necessities of that Hospital now together running somewhat less in the account than in the Past year, this Charge item therefore now also turns out that much smaller Repairs and Carpentry ƒ 387:—:— Seeing that during the Course of these books, one has diligently proceeded with the projected Lodge renovation, without touching upon any repairs worthy of name, this account has therefore not come into consideration today; Having given the Principal reasons for the increased and decreased Charge accounts of the present in contrast to the preceding book year, it is further indicated pursuant to the respected orders of their High Noble Lordships whence the greater or lesser Charges of the current year have flowed in comparison with its determination in the memorandum of Retrenchment, to wit Charges

Meanwhile, from the just mentioned vessel, there also died and were buried at this office, leaving no testament or anything of importance: 1775, 21st April: Coenraad Pietersse, from Amsterdam, sailor. 1775, 19th May: Albert Albertse, from Oloerom, sailor. Although, since our last humble letter of 25 March of this year, which served to escort four of the Emperor's pepper and tin vessels, we have almost continually urged that monarch as well as his son, the King, to fulfill their promises to dispatch several other similar small vessels to Your High Excellencies shortly, this has nonetheless not had the desired effect. This was mainly due to the illness of the King's son and heir to the throne, Pangerang Jaija, which was steadily growing worse at the time, on account of which the Sultan, out of melancholy, completely abandoned all management of state governance, and with which the Emperor did not wish to burden his head either. This also caused the subordinates to halt all preparations for the transport of pepper and tin, since no one except the prime favorites was permitted to see the King now and then, under the condition of not mentioning the least matter of state. This inactivity increased on 14 April following, when the aforementioned promising Crown Prince exchanged the temporal for the eternal, whereby his father, the King, was overcome with such grief that His Highness remains almost out of his senses to this day, concerning himself with nothing whatsoever, except solely with visiting his son's grave daily; and having a magnificent tomb erected upon it in his presence, on which more than 500 people are working. However, the old, worthy Emperor, having calmed down somewhat from his initial shock, granted Your High Excellencies' first undersigned servant an audience eight days after this demise, [illegible] Missive Dispatch of the pantjalling De Snoek Massacre of three European seafarers and declared at that time, among other things, that seeing the consequences of this inactivity at a time when, by ancient custom, attention was primarily focused on nothing other than the shipment of pepper and tin, he had decided, during the King's period of mourning, to resume all possible care and attention to the government of the realm, insofar as his advanced years and failing strength would permit him. And with this aim, he had already given orders to prepare His Highness's letter and gifts for Your High Excellencies with all haste, in order that the already appointed envoys, Khemaas Tommagong Carta Nagara and Khingabeij Satja dinata, might soon set sail with them toward Batavia. This promise also led to the undersigned being requested, in the Emperor's name, on the 12th of this month, to come the following day to collect the aforementioned missive with the customary state procession of the monarch, and to escort it on board, which was indeed carried out on that day under reciprocal expressions of friendship. However, as these same envoys are seen to this day still pacing back and forth, and as one cannot truly ascertain through a definitive answer how many separate pepper and tin vessels will be paired with this—since one speaks of 2 to 3, and the other again of 4 to 5 vessels—we have become apprehensive that they might not be able to make the voyage to the Court due to the elapsed monsoon. We have therefore judged it our duty to give Your High Excellencies respectful notice of these matters by express, and to employ for this purpose the pantjalling De Snoek, which small vessel we humbly request be dispatched back quickly with a cargo of rice in deduction of our annual requisition, as our remaining stock of that necessary foodstuff has almost run out. We also cannot conceal from Your High Excellencies' attention on this occasion that on the 2nd of this current month, the commander of the cruising pantjalling Edam stationed here, Hendrik Willem Lomijer of Amsterdam, quartermaster, together with two of his sailors, namely Christiaan Godfried Metscher of Ronnenburg, able seaman, and Daniel van der Leek of Leiden, ditto, came to a pitiful end. The first-named was murdered in a barbaric manner, with 14 wounds, both cuts and stabs, and was found dead in that condition on the scaffolding hanging by the side of the said pantjalling; the second had his body cut open with a belly-slasher so that the entrails hung out, who, having nevertheless reached the said vessel in this state, immediately sought his comfort in jumping overboard without surfacing again; and of the last, neither word nor trace has been heard.

furtherance nor yet signs learned, all of which was committed by a certain small native vessel, commonly called a proa saloor among the Palembangese. These murderers had six oars to the sides and two sails, with which coming from the sea and being hailed to come and present their pass upon the Company cruiser according to custom, they immediately flatly refused to do so. However, upon hearing a shot with blank powder, they immediately brought to and pulled up close alongside the aforementioned pantjalling, calling out that they possessed no pass. Whereupon the aforementioned three men crossed over into that vessel without any weapons on them in order to inspect the same, but were immediately slaughtered there in the above-mentioned manner. After this the murderers, upon hearing the alarm that two sailors from Edam made, sought and found their salvation in flight, rowing continuously straight ahead of the Company vessel and thus clear of its guns, as this small keel, having run aground due to heavy winds and a strong current, could not swing and carries no swivel guns. Which fatal case Your High Nobilities, if you please, might view in detail from the two original declarations that we have the honour to present herewith. We immediately gave notice of this monstrous deed to the emperor, who deplored the same with tearful eyes and called it an inhuman cruelty, promising that he would have the perpetrators keenly pursued in order that, obtaining them in custody, they may all suffer a painful death as an example to others. The prince's sincerity has also been evident to us in this matter, having sent out capable men in all directions to discover the murderers or their whereabouts, but until today, as little as we ourselves, has any further news of them been obtained. 89 Per the Emperor's request for rice Arrivals of the pantjallang De Snoek, and the ship Juno Pepper and tin dispatch to crown with perfect health and a prosperous reign, for the welfare of the Honorable Company and all its subordinates. Pursuant to the high order in the first-mentioned missives, we have informed the Emperor that, however gladly Your High Noble Honors wished to fulfill the Prince's request for 5 to 600,000 pounds of rice, the Company did not at that time have the opportunity at hand, but that its transport hither could best be done upon the return of the vessels bringing Palembang pepper and tin; for which His Highness expressed his gratitude, while the first signatory humbly begs pardon that he addressed the aforementioned request privately to the late Governor-General and not to the illustrious assembly of Your High Noble Honors, this having happened at the Emperor's express desire and in that manner. Subsequently, on the 4th of July last, with the return of the pantjallang De Snoek, and on the 17th following, per the ship Juno, we saw ourselves honored with two of Your High Noble Honors' original as well as duplicate missives, both dated the 26th of June prior, and accompanied by various annexes, all corresponding to their register, whose contained orders shall always be dutifully obeyed by us. We observed with regret from the aforementioned honored letters that Your High Noble Honors regarded it as a sign of our indifference that, despite the notes concerning this in the respected missive dated 31 May 1769, Your High Honors had not been informed by our humble letter of 25 March of this year how many of the King's vessels and what mass of pepper and tin were to be expected this year at the Coast. Yet, High Noble and Right Honorable Lords, and Noble Lords, please be persuaded that on this matter there has never been any lack of inquiries or promptings on our part, but rather on the King's side, as we detailed extensively in our respectful letter of 15 May last, to which we therefore now most submissively refer. Nevertheless, we shall in the future continually fix all our attention upon this point and seek to inform ourselves early from the Emperor as well as the King as to how many vessels and what estimated quantity of pepper and tin one - 6 - 9 Renewal of the Contracts Prior year charges Thanksgiving for the received provisions Further demand thinks to dispatch from here to the capital, in order subsequently to be able to communicate this to Your High Noble Honors at the first opportunity or by express. The Emperor and King were very pleased that, although Your High Noble Honors had seen the contracts concluded between the Honorable Company and this kingdom last altered on 15 January 1763, but, per the instruction sent to us in June 1775, had nevertheless, to accommodate Their Highnesses as much as possible, seen fit to let the old ones stand and keep them in their full force and value, in such manner as the same has now been put on paper and, on 25 December 1775, signed and sealed mutually by the Princes and the undersigned, as well as ratified by Your High Noble Honors on 14 May 1774; the Emperor declaring upon the delivery of this latter that he would take care as much as possible that during his life its contents would be sacredly observed. That Your High Noble Honors have favorably passed the charges of the book-year 1772/3, which had exceeded the previous book-year by 28,765:19:8 guilders and the Memorandum of Economy by 32,444:-:-, for the reasons given, we acknowledge with gratitude, and we shall subsequently, as much as feasible, apply ourselves to relieve the costs of the work of the lodge renewal through the obtaining of greater profits and the observation of all possible economy. For the cash funds and necessities sent to us with the bringers of these, we express our acknowledgment, having been saved thereby in many respects from a great predicament.
