Pursuant to Your Right Honors' highly esteemed order contained in your honored letter of the 21st of August, the Bugis soldier Dul Fattoeakan was corrected for the fault he committed; the same very humbly thanks Your Right Honors for the unmerited mercy shown to him, just as the soldier Pieter de Bruijn likewise humbly does to Your Right Honors for the transfer from the Bugis to the European military corps favorably granted to him by Your Right Honors, the servants mentioned on the enclosed receipt roll also adding their gratitude herewith for the advance granted to them by Your Right Honors and received against accrued monthly pay, while the recently delivered seals were well received by us, and we also humbly thank Your Right Honors for that accommodation. By a Bugis soldier stationed here on command, there was brought in a few days ago from Battang-cappas a free Bugis named Meedan Giealie, who committed a manslaughter against the Malay Sidape and now, shackled under a detachment, goes over to the coast. This delinquent has voluntarily confessed to us and the junior servants here that he committed that manslaughter; That he was compelled to do so by order of the Mohammedan priest who resides in the Salapan Cottas of the district of Battang-cappas and has himself called Touanko Inoenang, who is said to have ordered him to seek out the deceased, alleging that Canbourien had been stolen from him, the priest, by the same, and he, the priest, ordering the delinquent absolutely to bring the slain man to him, further saying: if he resists, then you are wise enough to know what you must do; the delinquent further recounting having met the brought-up Sidape under the village of Taratak and having addressed him there to go with him to the aforementioned priest, but that the same answered: what business is that of yours?, striking him, the delinquent, at the same time with a piece of a handspike on the body and on the neck, and giving a wound or deep scratch on the belly, after which he, the delinquent, also putting up a defense in order not to be beaten to death, dispatched the said Sidape with his kris, and after performing this deed made a report thereof to the said priest, who said: it is well, you have done well, now he who made me ashamed is out of the world, just go away. Furthermore, we can assure Your Right Honors that when the delinquent was brought here, he was bruised and swollen from blows on the neck and in the face, and wounded on the belly; this being all that we can report to Your Right Honors regarding this committed manslaughter. And furthermore to proceed, in accordance with the duty owed to your Honors, to render a brief report of our proceedings in the recently elapsed financial year, In which respect your Honors will perceive from the enclosed return that in the year 1776/7 a purchase value of ƒ 24373:13:8 was traded with a gross profit of ƒ 10546:5:8 or a good 43 1/8 percent, and subsequently the accompanying statement of account drawn up from the accompanying trade books of this trading post indicates that the past financial year realized more profits than expenses to the amount of ƒ 8832:6:- and this trading post, in comparison with the preceding financial year, has advanced by ƒ 746:11:-, the expenses being ƒ 92:17:8 less than the estimate made thereon, and the remainders on the last day of August last amounting here to ƒ 47212:11:- and thus ƒ 46492:18:8 less than at the end of the previous financial year, while we hope to see these significantly reduced further through the dispatch of the return cargo with the departure of the ship Beemster Welvaaren; and in conclusion of these matters, we note here further that the outstanding debts on old and new account have been reduced since our administration here by th: 127:1:7/40 and the same thus remain reduced, according to the indication in the balances, to Th: 123:4:-, with which we conclude this subject, in the hope that our small accomplishments may afford your Honors some satisfaction. Padang 142 110 Copy of Incoming Letters from the Office Adjerhadja, Beginning on 8 January and Ending on 9 December 1777, To the Honorable Johannes Siberg, Senior Merchant and Governor of Sumatra's West Coast Together with The Honorable Members of the Honorable Council of Policy there Honorable Sir and Honorable Gentlemen, Having safely returned here on the 23rd of the past month with the cargo prahu and having found everything in good order, I hereby have the honor to inform Your Honors of this, and furthermore take the liberty to present to Your Honors herewith in duplicate the calculated statement required in your most respected letter of 12 December last regarding the amount of the repairs to be made here to the Honorable Company's buildings, amounting to ƒ778:12:8; with the humble request for Your Honors' favorable authorization to enter and write off the aforementioned sum in the trade ledgers of this small office, and that I may be permitted to requisition from there such building materials and timber as are necessarily required for this and are not in stock here. The soldier Lodewijk Lucas expresses to Your Honors both his humble gratitude for the increase of his pay to ƒ14 per month, as does the soldier Philippus Coenraads, whom I could not induce to enter into a new contract and who therefore now departs there as the bearer of this letter, for his obtained discharge to the main settlement. The happiness that I have had, furthermore, to perceive from Your Honors' most venerated letter that my proceedings in trade during the recently passed financial year 1775/6 were fortunate enough to meet with Your Honors' satisfaction, and the continued confidence for the future, will certainly spur me on to make every effort to fulfill Your Honors' good expectations, especially if it will further please Your Honors to provide me with what is needed in good time. The Dutch and Malay edicts against the importation of prohibited textiles having been duly made known both to the small European community here and to the inhabitants of the districts falling under this small office, and posted everywhere in the customary places, I shall remain just as vigilant against any violation thereof, as well as observe in dutiful compliance the contents of the extracts and orders sent to me regarding the outstanding debts, the keeping of the trade ledgers, the new method of calculating gold, and the keeping of records of everything that occurs here with the English and other foreign nations. To as before, on the 30th ultimo I had the honor to receive via Poulo chinco Your Right Honorable's very venerated missive of the 26th preceding, to which now serving in respectful reply I cannot omit expressing to Your Right Honorable my humble thanks for the small sum of f 510:1:- favorably granted to me for the necessary repairs to be carried out on the buildings here; The error committed by my predecessor Nicolai to his detriment has been charged by me to the account of the general, in accordance with Your Right Honorable's authorization, in the Trade Books of this station of the year 1776/7; and in accordance with Your Right Honorable's much esteemed order, I have given notice both to the Regentess of Jndiapoura and to the English Resident at Moco Moco of Your Right Honorable's resolution regarding the differences pending between them, and I shall furthermore endeavor, as far as possible, to prevent it from turning into hostilities on either side; Having, immediately upon receipt of Your Right Honorable's very respected letter, given notice to all the natives subordinate to this small station of the increase of the price of pepper favorably granted by Their High Mightinesses to rd.s 8:- the 130 lb or rd.s 24.- the Bahar, I have on that occasion, by pointing out their own interest and by other friendly persuasions, exhorted them once more with all possible emphasis to the fulfillment of their promises already made in the previous year, to keep them daily to the observance of which shall always be one of my principal cares; furthermore, I shall allow the instruction concerning the calculation of the Spanish Reals required for the purchase of that grain at 64 stivers apiece to serve as my dutiful guidance, as well as the other very respected orders sent to me concerning the forwarding of the empty powder kegs, the settling of the outstanding debts within 6 months, and the solemn presentation of His High Mightiness the High Noble Right Honorable Lord Jeremias van Riemsdijk in the eminent dignity of Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies on the 18th of this month; In accordance with what was favorably imparted to me, I have looked forward daily to the sloop de Vrouw Wilhelmina, but this small vessel not having appeared here up to this day, and not daring to wait any longer with the sending of the usual annual Trade Papers that have already been ready for a long time, but the dispatch of which I had until today postponed in expectation of the speedy arrival of the said vessel, I take herewith the liberty of offering to Your Right Honorable the survey of this station taken under the end of August according to the order, accompanied by two returns of the sales made at this station in the recently passed financial year 1777 and a list of the collection made during that time, from the first of which Your Right Honorable will see that a purchase amount of f 11324:-:- has been turned over in various merchandises with a gross profit of f 4371:12:8 or more than 38 2/5 percent; and from the latter that the collection has consisted of Th.s 45 1 1/0 of gold and lb 41965 of sifted black pepper, so that the collection of pepper has increased compared to the previous year, but on the other hand the vent, the gross profits, and the collection of gold are less, which latter is mainly to be attributed to the unrest caused by the brother of the Sultan of Moco Moco, who, fled from there dissatisfied, and subsequently having been reinforced by a so-called Touanko Minangcabo and his following, consisting of a party of vagabonds and thieving rabble, has roamed around for a considerable time in the regions above Moco Moco and Jndrapoura, whereby the Pakkalanjamboe and Korinchi mountain people, who have to pass through there, have for a long time been deterred from coming hither for trade; but this rabble, according to reports, having now dispersed, the said mountain peoples are beginning to come here again, and I hope therefore that the trade in this now commenced financial year will turn out more profitably, etc. The spillage and leakage found upon the survey, as appears from the accompanying memorandum, not exceeding the percentages determined by the regulation, I therefore request permission to write off the same to the account of profit and loss, as well as the unserviceable goods destroyed according to the order, and the old cargo prahu found unserviceable for further use, as appears from the enclosed report and declaration, and

Having had the good fortune to perceive from Your Honorable's highly respected letter of the 23rd ultimo, brought here on the 2nd of this month by the sloop named in the margin, that Your Honorable had been pleased to take satisfaction in my transactions in the trade of the past financial year for the reasons given in my respectful letter of the 11th of October, this will spur me to do everything in my power to dutifully answer Your Honorable's good expectation that in the current financial year this small office will be provided with a better showing. And I further have the honor to express my humble thanks to Your Honorable for the authorization kindly granted to me therein for the write-off of wastage, ruined unusable goods, and a deceased bondsman, as well as for the male slave and 10 lasts of Java salt sent to me in his place by the aforementioned vessel, which latter mentioned, after deduction of the usual wastage, was properly delivered. Continuation of the month of September Januseine Tuesday the 23rd there arrived in the roads an English bark, named Leconia, commanded by one Joh: Rosing, coming from Bancoulen bound for Nattal, laden with rice, manned with 25 hands, mounted with 10 pieces of cannon, coming to request water and firewood. Friday the 26th the aforementioned English bark departed from the roads. October Tuesday the 14th there arrived here in the roads an English sloop named Betserff, commanded by one William Reid, coming from Japanolij bound for Bencolen, laden with rice and benzoin, manned with 26 hands, mounted with 8 pieces of cannon, coming to request provisions. Tuesday the 21st the aforementioned English bark departed. Monday the 27th there arrived in the roads an English bark named Speedwel, commanded by one Sober Stael, coming from Madras bound for Bencolen, laden with wine, Spanish dollars, and some bales of linens, manned with 40 hands, mounted with 10 pieces of cannon, requesting water, firewood, and some provisions. Wednesday the 29th there arrived here in the roads an English sloop named The Rubij Nancij, commanded by one Williams, coming from Bancoele bound for Bengaale, laden with rice, manned with 36 hands, mounted with 8 pieces of cannon, requesting water and firewood. November Saturday the 1st the previously mentioned English bark departed. Saturday the 29th there arrived here in the roads an English bark named Leconia, commanded by one Joh: Rosing, coming from Nattal bound for Bencoulen, laden with planks, manned with 40 hands, mounted with 10 pieces of cannon, coming to request water and firewood. December Monday the 1st the aforementioned English bark departed from the roads. Tuesday the 9th there arrived here an English bark named Speedwels, commanded by one Grenawaij, coming from Nattal bound for Bencolen, laden with rice, manned with 32 hands, mounted with 6 pieces of cannon, coming to request drinking water and some provisions. Saturday the 13th the aforementioned English bark departed from the roads and dropped out of sight. Statement of Account of the profits and charges as they have fallen on this Coast in the book-year 1776/7, compared against the sum stipulated for that purpose by letter from Their High Mightinesses dated June 21st, 1765, with reasons that have given cause for this increase or decrease from the stipulation. Namely: The General Charges and expenses that during the course of these books have fallen in general on this Coast amount to ƒ 59138. 10. — The profits on the other hand ƒ 68877: 3: 8 Thus more profits than charges ƒ 9738. 13. 8.
