883. The 28 December 1779 Governor and Council, to the former extraordinary Governor and Council regarding the respecting and acknowledging of the Governor General. I: Vos, I: Schippers, J: J. In the margin was: Company's seal, pressed in red wax covered with a paper diamond, and beneath it: By order of their aforementioned High Excellencies, was signed: D: Goetbloed, Secretary. Beneath stood: Agrees, signed: D: D: van Haak, First Sworn Clerk. Continuation of the Governor and Council. Furthermore, after the aforementioned deed was read to the Council, the Lord Governor continued that, since the High Noble Lord Reijnier de Klerk had already been confirmed in the Council of the Indies in the aforesaid highly distinguished dignity according to the order of the Company, his Honour, together with the Council, had been continued by their High Excellencies in those terms and such functions as had been assigned to them, and that upon the oaths which had already been taken by each of them to the General Company both upon the entering into their offices and upon their acceptance into the service, both in the Netherlands and in these regions. Declaration by the Noble Lord Governor and the former Fiscal King to the aforementioned, as well as the summoning of the colleges as well as the officers of the artillery, and also of the other qualified servants and citizens. And after the respective members of the Council and the former Fiscal King had solemnly thanked his Honour for the aforesaid communication, they, together with the Lord Governor, declared that they, as has occurred up to now, shall also henceforth hold, respect, and acknowledge the Lord Governor General Reijnier de Klerk as their lawful Governor General; of which it was approved and understood to keep a record by this document. Subsequently, there were summoned inside in two turns: the College of Justice, the officers of the Artillery and Navigation, the Minister together with the Church Council, the Orphan Masters, the Civil Town Council, and also all other qualified servants and citizens here, together with the Franciscan Monk Friar Anthoni de Nosa Sinhora de Rosairo; and after the Minister van der Werth and the Captain Commandant of the Nagapatnam Outer Town Gijsbertus Zegelaar were each assigned a chair beside the table to the left hand of the Lord Governor, upon which they took their seats, his Honour, after having informed the aforesaid servants and citizens of the reasons for their summons, 885. The 28th December 1779 Informing them of the reasons for their summons, and continuation of the same upon their oaths. had the Secretary read the aforementioned deed of authorization in two separate turns to the aforesaid servants, citizens, and subjects; and furthermore also notified them that, since the High Noble Lord Reijnier de Klerk had already been confirmed in that capacity in the Council of the Indies according to the order of the Company, all college members, servants of the Company, and citizens were continued in those terms and such functions as have been assigned to them, and that upon the oaths which they have already taken to the General Company both upon entering their offices and upon their acceptance into the Company's service, both in the Netherlands and in these regions. The firing of 21 pieces from the Castle upon a signal given for that purpose, and then of 56 cannon shots from the outer town walls, and a mutual congratulation with the Noble Lord Governor on that solemnity. And after everyone had stepped outside the assembly hall upon this, the Secretary Steffenberg, upon orders received for that purpose from the Lord Governor, gave the determined signal for the firing of the cannon from one of the windows of the assembly hall; upon which 21 cannon shots were fired from the Castle and Inner Town, and 56 cannon shots from the outer town walls; as a sign and proof to the collective inhabitants of this town and villages that his High Excellency, the High Noble Highly Esteemed Lord Reijnier de Klerk, was today solemnly presented in the Council of Coromandel as Governor General of the Dutch Indies. After the presentation of his High Excellency was thus concluded, the collective members, together with the former Fiscal King, cordially congratulated the Lord Governor on the completed presentation of his High Excellency de Klerk, wishing God's most salvation-bringing blessing upon the illustrious person of his High Excellency and his highly praiseworthy administration; and this being subsequently answered by the Lord Governor with a compliment suited to the occasion, it is furthermore on his

887. 28 December 1779 Decision to keep this record thereof and to insert the certificate. proposition, it is not only approved and agreed to keep this record of the aforementioned presentation, but also to insert herewith the certificate thereof signed by the Governor and Council, reading as follows: I, the undersigned Reinier van Vlissingen, Governor and Director on behalf of the General Netherlands Chartered East India Company on the Coast of Coromandel and its dependencies, together with the Council, declare and certify hereby that, according to the form sent to us by Their High Excellencies, we have this day caused the Secretary to read aloud in the assembly hall to the Council of Justice, the officers of the militia, artillery, and maritime service, the church council, orphan masters, the civil town council, as well as all other qualified officials and citizens here, the act of authorization concerning the appointment of the High Noble Lord Reijnier de Klerk as Governor-General of all the Netherlands Indies, and furthermore announced to them through the mouth of the said Governor that, since the High Noble Lord Reijnier de Klerk has already been confirmed in that capacity in the Council of India according to the orders of the Company upon the decease of His Honour Jeremias van Riemsdijk, the aforementioned collegiate members and all servants collectively are continued under those terms and in such functions as have been assigned to them, and that upon the oaths which they have already taken to the General Company both upon entering their offices and upon their acceptance into the Company's service, both in the Netherlands and in these regions. Done in the Council of Coromandel at Nagapatnam, 28 December 1779 Proposition by the Honourable Governor to send Beggle as sworn scribe to Palleacatta in place of Rousseau, who was discharged from there. Subsequently, it was proposed by the Governor in the meeting to appoint on this joyous day, as bookkeeper and sworn scribe of Palleacatta, the former sworn clerk of the Secretariat here, Johan Leonard Beggle, who was discharged from service for some time during the recent reduction, as being in the greatest need of such a favour, and this in place of the sworn scribe Frans Rousseaux, who had requested his discharge from His Honour. Whereupon, after deliberation, it was approved and agreed, in place of the aforementioned Rousseau, who is hereby discharged, to readmit into the Company's service as bookkeeper at 30 guilders per month on a contract of five years the former bookkeeper and sworn clerk of the Secretariat here, Johan Leonard Beggle, 889. 28 December 1779 Appointment of Schlumpff as surgeon at Palleacatta in place of the deceased van Holt. with the promotion of the same to sworn scribe of Palleacatta. Subsequently, upon the express request made for that purpose by the Chief of Palleacatta, Nicolaas Tadama, it was approved and agreed, in place of the deceased surgeon Pieter van Holt, to appoint as surgeon of Palleacatta the assistant surgeon in the hospital here, Johan Peeter Schlompff, granting him 28 guilders per month on a new contract of five years.
