This is the reason why the supply brought in since the departure of the Cornelia Adriana, along with the 50 piculs as a gift, consisted of a quantity of only 95840 lb black and 918 lb white pepper. Subtracting from this 1951 lb for weight loss in the warehouses, and the two percent across the entire harvest, it is thereby shown that the Orangeboom was laden with 456875 lb black and 910 lb white pepper. The miserable, dire condition of the crew and a lack of drinking water were the reasons that the commander had been forced to call at Banjer. Immediately, upon his urgent request, we assisted him with 5 Chinese as sailors, and after those poor Europeans, who were almost all ill, had been somewhat refreshed, that small vessel departed from here again on the morning of the 17th. On the morning of the 19th ditto, we received news that an English sloop outside the river had been captured by the Banjarese. We immediately sent a vessel with the Malay clerk outside to obtain some intelligence regarding this. But to our inner distress, we learned that night around 12 o'clock upon the return of that man that it was the Company's pantjalling Ternaten, of which all those people, Europeans as well as Chinese, and even a maidservant of the commander, had been murdered in a pitiful manner, and that the perpetrator of that villainous act was one Kjai Narringbaja with 10 other Banjarese. Immediately after this sad news, we had all the creeks and inlets, both inside and outside the Banjarese rivers, searched with an armed vessel; however, despite all the vainly applied efforts, we could not obtain the slightest intelligence of that small vessel, all the more because the native inhabitants, at the first rumors of this villainous deed and even now, keep very much reserved, and one cannot get to speak with them. But in the morning around 4 o'clock, we received a vague rumor that the same was at Salak, an island in the great river lying almost behind the lodge, and had been brought thither by special command of the Susuhunan to burn it or scuttle it; then we immediately sent a vessel thither, but it was not to be found there. The first very humble undersigned, judging this moment too dangerous to leave the Honorable Company's office, the second undersigned departed upriver immediately on the morning of the 20th ditto to address the Susuhunan and Sultan in the strongest possible terms regarding this so hostile and villainous action. 13 Report concerning the susuhunan and sultan. The resident departs. for the present there was nothing better to do than immediately hand over the vessel to us with its ammunition, equipment, and cargo, and to deliver the murderers into the hands of Your Right Excellencies. These words seemed to make an impression on him, and he assured once more with solemn oaths that he had known absolutely nothing of it whatsoever, but that he would investigate the matter thoroughly, and would then satisfy this just and equitable demand. After having impressed upon his heart in the strongest terms the necessity of begging Your Right Excellencies' most humble pardon in this regard and giving complete satisfaction, the second signatory departed again on the morning of the 21st, and arrived here in the afternoon, bringing with him this accompanying Malay letter addressed to the first very humble signatory. On the 23rd we received the news that the vessel had been taken away to the great Biadjos river, and indeed by special order of the susuhunan to burn it. Thereupon, the pepper weigher and confidant of the susuhunan coming to the lodge, we persuaded that man, through great promises and presents under a firm assurance of secrecy, to elucidate the following to us: That they had mistaken the vessel which Kjai Nakkingbaja had overrun for an Englishman, and that the sultan, firmly believing this to be so, had given orders to this end, whereupon Narringbaja, with 10 other Banjarese, had overrun it in the afternoon at about 4 o'clock and murdered everyone; that immediately after committing this most atrocious murder he had caused the vessel to be brought up into the great Biadjos river, but he himself had sailed directly up to the susuhunan. However, having learned on the way that it was a Company bottom, he fell into such despair that he asked nothing else of the susuhunan than to have him massacred. The susuhunan was utterly dismayed and embarrassed at the first news of this, and immediately had his two privy councillors, Kjai Suringrana and Martadiwansa, summoned, with whom he conferred until midnight, and resolved to have the vessel retrieved from the great Biadjos pepper weigher, to wage war upon them, and to have some hundreds of those innocent people murdered, and then continue to protest vigorously that they, and not the Banjarese, had overrun the vessel. However, the next day we were assured again in truth that it had indeed been brought directly up to the great Biadjos river, but that an order had already been given 2 days ago to burn it, and thus there was no longer any doubt that this would be carried out immediately. We, therefore, understanding that the Banjarese were trying to obscure this matter more and more, as it had been announced around all the negorijen by order of the susuhunan on pain of death not to give the slightest light regarding this to anyone whomsoever from the lodge, the first signatory departed on the morning of the 24th for the court to the susuhunan and sultan. After having represented to them in the strongest terms the breach that this villainous affair made in the friendship of his discussions with the susu with the Company, as well as Your Right Excellencies' far-reaching power to avenge such an intolerable hostile act, they both appeared very perplexed, and from this I could virtually conclude that they were extremely afraid and very embarrassed by the matter, continuing nevertheless to protest that all this had happened without their prior knowledge, and that they would make every effort to return the vessel with its belongings to us. I, being unable to listen to such hypocrisies any longer, asked whether it had not already been burned in the great Biadjos river by his order, and if not, that His Highness must then have it fetched from there, because it was no longer the time to conceal this any further, and that the matter had been proved to us more than clearly, and that I, these discussions being too significant, had to communicate it fully to Your Right Excellencies. And I presently deferred, in the name of the Company, reclaiming the vessel with its belongings; and that if the susuhunan and sultan wished to prove to Your Right Excellencies that they were innocent in this regard, the criminals would then have to be punished according to their deserts, and it was best to send them to Batavia as soon as possible. By an indigenous vessel, we take the liberty to communicate to your High Nobilities that yesterday morning Kjai Messa Dilatri, coming into the lodge, informed us in the name of the Susuhunan that he was to depart for Batavia tomorrow as his envoy, principally for the transport of the son of Narringbaja, and a certain Resoep, besides Narringbaja the principal murderers of the captured sloop Ternaten. Yet to our no small wonder, we understood at the same time that Narringbaja would remain here and that he also still went about unpunished, free and loose at Cajoetangi, although we have repeatedly requested the Susuhunan for his apprehension and to obtain his deserved punishment, this has until now been fruitless, as well as the restitution of any of the goods, of which we still remain firmly assured that the greater part has already been brought up to Cajoetangie. In our successive letters of 2 June and 5 July, we have already informed your High Nobilities most circumstantially regarding this entire unfortunate case, but since it is a matter of the utmost importance, and we have been shamefully led up the garden path several times here with manifold lies, both by the Susuhunan and the lesser Bandjarese, we therefore plead, if any contradictory reports may have appeared in our very respectful missives, for a most humble forgiveness. However, since several matters have since been confirmed or contradicted to us, we now take the liberty to report to your High Nobilities most circumstantially regarding this entire hostile event. A statement by an impartial, honest old man, namely Toansijt Abdulla, nephew of the Sultan of Pontiana, who stands in very good credit with the native, and who has given us the following under offer of oath, we do not doubt will be not unpleasing to your High Nobilities. That the pantjalling being already outside the river on the morning of 18 May, Kjai Narringbaja with his son named Resoep and yet another Bandjarese, Entje Brahim, having come on board with him, pointing out to the master 3 prahus loaded with split rattans for the junk, he passed them off as pirates, with the advice not to go further outside, but rather to remain waiting inwards close before a creek named Sungei Musang for 3 to 4 days for the departure of those vessels. Whereupon having gone from on board, he returned in the afternoon, and after some indifferent discourses asked the master whether he wished to buy a pretty slave girl, but that out of fear of the Susuhunan he could not bring her on board except in the evening; which the other consenting to, he, Narringbaja, came on board at night around 10 o'clock with his son and the aforementioned Brahim with that girl; the sale being swiftly concluded and the master being busy counting out to him the money and Spanish dollars, he, Narringbaja, murdered him in a murderous manner with his kris, whereupon the two others, with the help of some other Bandjarese who had arrived silently with small boats close under the shore, further slaughtered the rest of the crew, who mostly lay sleeping, and threw the dead bodies overboard, having the vessel immediately taken off into a creek of the Biadjos river emerging into this one, but he himself sailed up to Martapura that very same night. that he had overrun an English sloop in the river, and at the same time handed over to the soesoehoenang two sealed packets, a gold watch, and a pair of diamond earrings. Some people present there, hearing mention of a sloop, immediately answered that this was probably the Company's sloop that had lain before the lodge two days prior, upon which the soesoehoenang, very alarmed, handed the brought goods back over to Narringbaja with the express order not to alienate the least part of them, and that if he should be well informed that it was a Company vessel, he would send him to Batavia as a ruiner of his settlements to receive his punishment. Immediately the soesoehoenang had his most trusted privy councillors summoned, and after having communicated this and his firm intention to send the perpetrators to Batavia, they strictly advised him against it, under the pretext that one could easily blame this entire matter on the Biadjos or pirates, but that at the same time every effort had to be made to obscure and conceal this from the lodge, and that it was therefore best either to have the vessel brought from the Biadjos river, hostilely attack those poor innocent people, and place the blame solely on them, or to burn the same there, which latter course they, judging it the easiest and best, carried out. That the goods had also already for the most part been brought up to Cajoetangi and a chest of linens belonging to the commander delivered into the hands of the soesoehoenang, the ammunition and further cargo still being for the most part in the keeping of Nakringbaje. That man at the same time promised me to spare no effort to trace everything for the conviction of the soesoehoenang, and detested the conduct displayed by that prince and his bad, roguish councillors in this entire occurrence there to the highest degree. We may assure Your High Nobilities with an easy conscience that this statement is in all parts grounded in truth, and although it differs quite well from that of the pepper-weigher in our humble letter of 2 June, yet many pieces correspond very well with this one, so that we can all the more assure Your High Nobilities of its authenticity in this year 1774, since the latter has also been confirmed to us by several other people. At the same time we can inform Your High Nobilities with all tranquility that we have acquitted ourselves of our bounden duty in this unfortunate case according to our duty, hoping Your High Nobilities will be pleased to cover the same with Your own most generous, favorable forgiveness with regard to the place and our slight abilities. Immediately after the first news received of this unhappy case, we represented the gravity of this roguish treatment to the soesoehoenang in the strongest terms, and already four court journeys have been made by both of us solely on this account, and we have handled it in all sorts of ways, with gentleness as well as with seriousness and emphasis, yet to our regret we have not yet advanced anything in this so weighty matter; the restitution of the ammunition and equipment as well as the punishment of the murderers have been our continuous demands, yet until now we have gained nothing more by this than a heap of dubious promises and specious lies; the native also inquires daily and continuously about the departure of the ship, but to remove all reflection from them we have made them believe that it is leaking and therefore first had to be repaired, and that a lack of the necessary timber delays its departure. Finally, we still take the liberty to testify respectfully to Your High Nobilities that the embassy of the soesoehoenang to Your High Nobilities appears very suspicious to us, since we cannot understand what they could accomplish with this, and especially since the two murderers are being transported free and unfettered, we firmly maintain that a place between Batavia and Banjer will be called at, and thus this embassy signifies no more than a mere pretense; nevertheless, this entire commission is kept secret from us with the utmost circumspection. 25 increase of the prices of the same our frequent reports to Your High Excellencies of the increase of the prices of that gemstone, we hope that Your High Noble and Right Honourable Sirs will excuse us from all improper conduct or lack of zeal, as the Banjarese, who finds it more advantageous to bring them himself to the capital, consequently causes the prices here to rise more and more. Furthermore, they have advanced very far in the art of cutting and setting within the past few years. To their Excellencies the Governor General and the Council of the Indies at Batavia, dated Amsterdam, 7 October 1779. In the absence of the letters from the Residents, being unable to verify whether any reasons were given by them for the small collection of only 130 carats of rough diamonds, we hope that this has not been caused by any lack of zeal or any other improper conduct. And since it is not beyond reflection that at the same time when the Company's demand was large, 1000 carats, it was so deficiently fulfilled, while fairly considerable parcels were sent over from Batavia on private account, which is also no small cause of the increase, we adhere to what was written on this subject under the heading of the Demand of Returns, resolved on 9 October 1778, and therefore look forward to receiving from you the necessary information by what means you judge that those private persons are able to obtain the diamonds. The low pepper market in China and the strong supply of birds' nests here for some years past is the reason why the junk crews transport little of that grain; thus through this the collection has significantly increased, though one harvest differs very much from another, but according to the native statements it will increase more and more within a few years, since in the high mountains where the best pepper grows, it being mostly old and barren, the same has now all been newly planted by order of the susuhunan. With respect to which Residency it was not disagreeable that the latest delivery of pepper would amount to considerably more than the preceding one, whilst we hope that the result may prove unfounded the suspicion of the Residents that the aforesaid increase was not to be attributed so much to the prince's inclination to uphold the contracts, as to a scarcity of money among the Chinese junk crews, who this time have not transported any parcels worth mentioning. Pursuant to Your High Excellencies' very respected orders, we have repeatedly and most earnestly maintained matters with the susuhunan, but his pretext of a lack of the vessels required for that purpose was his continuous faint excuse. Nevertheless, we can assure Your High Noble and Right Honourable Sirs with tranquility that Pulau Laut bears only the name of a smuggling place, although we do believe that such does occasionally happen; however, Pasir and Riau are the principal places that can be used for that purpose. We also wish that a good result may attend the exhortation you have made to the sultan in order to cause the Buginese to remove from a certain island situated in the vicinity of Banjarmasin, where that nation is said to carry on a clandestine trade in pepper with the English, it being expedient to watch well the effect of that exhortation, to prevent as much as possible that the Company may not be deprived of the pepper that belongs to it. On August 20, via a native vessel over Java, we had the honor to receive Your High Nobilities' much revered letters of June 19, containing primarily Your High Nobilities' highly esteemed orders concerning the sloop Ternaten, which had drifted away, which we shall strive to obey in all respects with the utmost exactness. Also, by order of Your High Nobilities, there were sent to us with that vessel by the Governor and Council of Samarang 4 soldiers, 2 gunners and 500 lb. of gunpowder, of which one soldier perished on the voyage, so that we now, with two brought by Cornelia Adriana, have our garrison complete. We likewise obey Your High Nobilities' much esteemed orders contained in the aforementioned missive to let the small vessel Cornelia Adriana depart as soon as feasible, which we now, being laden with 400,375 lb. of black pepper, among which are 50 piculs received on the 15th of this month as a gift for Your High Nobilities from the Sultan to the amount of ƒ55,747. 17. 8, have ordered to proceed to sea, as well as under its convoy 2 native sloops which we, prior to the receipt of Your High Nobilities' much esteemed missive, had already hired and fully laden with 258,875 lb. of black pepper, to which the poor condition of the warehouses forced us to resolve. However, there still remains 250,000 lb. of black pepper as a balance in the same, and we have no doubt that, as soon as the rivers, which are vehemently high here, and the rain, which is very persistent, abate a little, some more will be added, so that we do not doubt that the small Pallas will also be able to be fully laden upon arrival. We take this opportunity once again to use the freedom to congratulate His High Nobility most heartily upon the eminent dignity of Governor-General of the Dutch Indies, having, in accordance with Your High Nobilities' much revered orders, most respectfully introduced His High Nobility to the servants on July 15 under the taking of a proper oath. However, as it is still very uncertain whether the Biatjos or Banjarese are guilty of this, we immediately had the Sultan informed of this unheard-of treatment by the pepper weigher and writer. Upon receiving that unpleasant news, we would indeed have recalled the ship, but considering its valuable cargo, and especially because it was already practically out at sea upon receipt of that news, we merely let it proceed on its voyage under Your High Excellencies' favorable approval, in the hope that this renewed villainous treatment will have no further consequences. Nevertheless, we most respectfully solicit that Your High Excellencies please send that small vessel back here directly after unloading, and let it winter here, for although, after the receipt of Your High Excellencies' highly esteemed orders, we handled the matter concerning the pantjalling Ternaten with the greatest circumspection and prudence, and sought to satisfy the native in all respects, they nevertheless, as if conscious of wrongdoing, do not seem to have sufficient trust, and instead of showing submission at present, they become prouder from day to day, indeed even to such an extent that when the first very humble undersigned recently sailed up to Cajoetangi to speak with the Susuhunan about the expected harvest, our discussion happened to fall upon the captured sloop, and on that occasion I requested him once again, as if on my own initiative and with the greatest cordiality, that he would give full satisfaction to Your High Excellencies, there was one of his attendants who dared say to another, which my slave clearly understood: when the petok comes out, we shall just spear him with a tombak, for otherwise that bicara will become too big, as he knows too much about this entire affair. However, we solicit, should Your High Excellencies resolve to do so, that the commander Van Waningen might then again be sent with it over there; he is a mild-mannered man, skilled in dealing with the native, and from insolence, especially in such circumstances, one can only expect misfortunes.
