By our submission of 15 May of the past year, respectfully sent by the private small sloop the Sara Carolina, navigated by the native burger Salomon De Kok, the duplicate of which accompanies this, we have had the honor to dutifully notify Your Excellencies of the safe receipt of Your most respected letters of 30 December of the previous year, brought here safely on 11 April of this year by the small ship the Kleine Pallas. We shall now, with the return of that vessel, most obediently fulfill our obligation to provide Your Excellencies with a general account of matters, and begin provisionally with the respectful answering of the Extract of the Fatherland General Missive written by the Honorable, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Commissioners, Directors of the General Chartered Dutch East India Company in the Meeting of the Seventeen, to Your Excellencies, dated Amsterdam, 30 November 1781, containing the affairs of this Station and reading as follows: Section 127. The balance sheet of the station of Timor showing by itself a surplus of f 1782:6:-, and in comparison with the preceding year showing a considerable difference of no less than f 13,402:16:-, is particularly pleasing to us; and however much this was mainly caused by the heavy expenses that were spent on the church and fortifications in the previous year, the reduction of ordinary burdens and the increase of profits and revenues have nevertheless contributed to it as well: we hope that the officials will constantly focus their attention on this matter. Margin: To reduce the burdens and increase the profits, everything conceivable has been attempted by the present Chief, although regarding the latter article there is not much to boast of due to the low turnover in trade goods since the receipt of the news of the war between England and the State. Section 128. We trust that the officials will take as guidance the rough recommendation to ensure that certain red wood, which if not felled in its proper season generates white ants, is not employed for the Company's buildings, unless they are assured that the same was felled at the proper time, whereby one will then be able to benefit for a long time from the costly repairs that had to be made in the past year. Margin: This recommendation will be observed to the best of our ability. Section 129. The disposal of the piece goods that remained unsold here at the closing of the books for the year 1778, as well as the sale of some from the latest arrivals, being caused by the Chief Van Este extending credit out of his own purse to the Timorese residents and traders in order to secure local products for the Honorable Company, and especially the trade of... Regarding the restitution made by your Honours to the Engineer Silon of a sum of 116 rijksdaalders 28 stuivers 8 penningen, which he had paid out of cash on the grounds, as the servants say, that some used instruments had not been restituted by him, we wish to make no other reflection than that however certain it is, and this constituted the foundation of your disposition, that instruments which have been used for 7 years can no longer be returned in that state in which they were received, this nevertheless does not prevent that the same, however bad, could have been handed over; so that one could know for certain that the same were not retained in bad faith; and it appears to us that this reflection moved your Honours to bring to the attention of the servants that some unfit goods were delivered short from the vessel de Hoop. From what we have said under the matter of Banda Section 49, your Honours will sufficiently be able to conclude that we do not consider the answer to our letter of 25 September 1778 numbers 108 and 109 regarding the Assistants Grebel and Kraijenhoff to be very satisfactory. Section 135. Lastly, it being answered by your Honours to our just-mentioned letter Section 110 by missive of 20 October 1779 Section 26 that the entire parcel of gold which was enjoyed by the servants for the settling of the disputes of the Regents was not 56 taels, but had amounted to 28 taels 1 maas and 2 condorins, it surprises us in the highest degree that your Honours, by letter to the servants on 18 December, and thus long after what was written to us, still fix the quantity of that gold at 56 taels.
