Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed Gentlemen. Extracts of Patriarchal General Missives written by the Highly Esteemed Gentlemen Directors of the General Dutch East India Company, at the Assembly of the Seventeen, to their Right Excellencies the Governor-General and the Council of the Indies at Batavia, dated Amsterdam, 30 November 1781, 22 November 1782, and 27 November 1783: In our humble reply to your Right Honourable, Highly Esteemed, most revered extract missive of 6 November 1780, the humble signatories made known, not without reason, their apprehension that matters concerning this new establishment were still very uncertain. The consequences have made this all too clear, as each year considerable sums have been lost and consumed by the establishment of Pontianak, because trade decreased from day to day and finally shifted entirely to neighbouring Mampawa, where the merchant was not kept waiting for his money as happened here through Sarieff. In the past year we informed you by our General Missive, § 124, that it still seemed very uncertain to us whether the Company would be able to derive any substantial benefit from the establishment of Pontianak, and we are still in the same uncertainty in this regard, if only matters there had taken a more favourable turn. Another difficulty was that products, gold, and wax were very rarely to be obtained here, so much so that the humble signatories found themselves compelled, if they wished to procure anything, to go and purchase it above market value. And although Sultan Sarieph was unceasingly urged by both Your Right Excellencies and the humble signatories to alter his conduct and give the merchant his due, nothing more was gained by this than good promises, which were forgotten almost as soon as they were brought to His Highness's attention. However, the passage of only six vessels in the past year seemed to exert some influence on the hardened heart of Sultan Sarieph. At the very least, he paid those people in a reasonable manner, the consequence of which has been that 16 small vessels have already put in here this year. All are proclaiming that His Highness will change for the better, and we also do not doubt that if Sarieff pays these people, the shipping trade will indeed begin to revive, although diamonds are still equally expensive and remain so, as well as gold, of which no improvement is to be expected as long as the Buginese trade in these regions. To make them move away from here is also not quite possible, since everyone here sought him out above others. We cannot make an accurate comparison regarding this, because we cannot rely on the reports of the former Resident Kloek. Meanwhile, it appears that the price of diamonds, which appeared rather high to you last year, has by no means decreased at present.

None of the Linens, and of the Woolens only about half has been sold. The princes found in the surrounding area are connected to that Nation by marriage, and thus could not be persuaded to drive them out of the country, for which the humble undersigned have already several times without success appealed to the Princes of Sanggau, Sintang, etc., and although the English who had settled on Borneo seem to have ceased trade, as now in four years not a single vessel of theirs has come there, the fault is mostly given to the Buginese, that the Gold is not so abundant as was first stated; at least due to the heavy drought one had not yet been able to satisfy the demand for this Article. The humble undersigned, in accordance with the respected orders of Your High Nobilities, already from the beginning of his arrival here spared no trouble nor feared any danger to win the heart of the Native, but progressing in this, such was soon closed off by Sultan Syarif's borrowings, so that they became fearful of Pontianak, and the few who still came downriver were obliged to sell their goods to me by night, for if Syarif noticed they had anything, they were harassed by him until they surrendered it to him, whereupon they had to wait months for their payment; and although the upriver inhabitant in general and principally the Sanggau person is very well disposed towards the Company, as the humble undersigned has experienced during six different expeditions made, they are nevertheless not to be persuaded to yield their products to us for lower prices than the Buginese dare to pay for them. The Pepper on Borneo could not be obtained for the price of 6 Reals, to which Your Honors had given authorization, and this because the English had established themselves there and erected a sort of Factory. The purchase of Iron was also suspended on account of its high price. As the Linens and Woolens could not possibly be sold here at the charged Company prices, it has favorably pleased Your High Nobilities to authorize the humble undersigned to send the same back towards Batavia, to which they also obediently ordered in the Year 1780. § 117: Our judgment then once again suspending until a better and friendlier interaction with the Native will possibly animate them further to advocate the Company's trade, we wish that the present Resident Stuart will leave nothing untried to that end. With the trade wares which the Company was to transport hither, matters were no better; at least the Linens remained unsold, and the Servants doubted very strongly whether the same would find any market, since the Natives sold them below the price for which they are charged to this Office; the Woolens had not yet been in demand. § 118: The Bookkeeper Conrad Marten Neun having first been planned to come hither, upon further orders the First humble undersigned hereof was commanded in his stead to assist the Commissioner Willem Adriaan Palm, and has also now departed again towards Samarang. But whereas Your Honors by Resolution of 26 March ordered that to assist the Rembang Resident Palm, whom Your Honors wished to send to this Establishment to investigate the matter, the Bookkeeper at Samarang Coonrad Marten Neun should also go thither, and that if the aforementioned Kloek could not continue in that Residency, the post should then be assigned to the said Neun, it surprises us to the highest degree that we find no further mention made anywhere of the aforementioned Neun. § 119: The conduct of the aforementioned Kloek is meanwhile of such a nature that the withdrawal of the nomination to junior merchant and the dispatch to Banda as Bookkeeper, according to our thoughts, did not constitute an appropriate correction. For although the interim Advocate Fiscal of India, into whose hands the aforementioned Kloek had been placed, by his report inserted into your Resolution of 26 November, declared that he found the facts not sufficiently proven to act upon them at law, and for that reason had left the aforementioned Kloek to your disposal, Your Honors could and should have brought about a Disposition whereby your displeasure would be shown in a more sensible manner to someone who, to mention only this, has exposed the Company's Servants to the greatest danger through his improvident, improper and, as Your Honors already call it in the letter of 30 March, brutal manner of acting, and against whom no criminal action was instituted solely because some formalities were lacking in the evidence that did exist (for the Advocate Fiscal did not dare call all the counts unproven); formalities by which a judge can never consider himself sufficiently bound, yet at the same time formalities which, in a political disposition where it comes down to a moral conviction, need not have so much influence. § 120: It is however so far from our intention that we, by the foregoing, would wish to authorize the taking of Political Dispositions and thereby, as the saying goes, undermine the work of Justice, that on the contrary we cannot sufficiently impress upon Your Honors the necessity to help promote a pure administration of Justice based on laws and customs; but we have merely wished to indicate hereby that whenever Your Honors in this or other Dispositions

The humble undersigned would constantly contribute to Your Right Honorable Excellencies and Most Respectable Sirs with even more favorable reports regarding the increase of the lease revenues, whenever the prices of products such as wax, gold, and diamonds are regulated in such a manner that one can trade in them with a good profit, while we desire to be elucidated for what reason Your Honors granted authorization to spend 10 1/3 rixdollars per carat for the diamonds purchased, whereas those delivered by the Sultan only cost 5 imperial dollars, and whether that authorization will not noticeably diminish the delivery that would take place through the Sultan. The authorization of Their Right Excellencies to purchase the diamonds at 10 1/3 rixdollars per carat was caused by the fact that they were commonly bought up by the Bugis at and above that price, and the humble undersigned were obliged, if they wished to secure a proper assortment for the Honorable Company, also to pay that much for it; and although Sultan Syarif indeed promised to deliver the same at 5 imperial dollars per carat, we nevertheless strongly doubt whether he will ever deliver precious stones in reduction of his debt, unless it should consist of diamond dust, which can indeed be obtained here at that price.
