476 47: 7: The 12th of December 1786. The 12th of December in the year 1786. Marginal Disposition taken in the Council of Policy at Suratta: While the underweight on the entire parcel of cloves according to the report amounts to 7/8 percent and thus less than the permitted 1 percent ship's underweight, it was resolved to allow the adjacent underweight on the 6 chests to be written off here, notwithstanding that the 30 lb underweight on the fortij shipped in the Charlotte must be attributed to the moisture of the cloves, to pass the remainder of this underweight, although it was accounted for by its commanding officer the Captain-at-Sea at present Christiaan Christiaanz, it was resolved to decide thereon as is set down in the margin of that document, and to present the same after its insertion to Your Right Noble Honours in original. Respectful answer of the undersigned, namely: the ship's officers, or whether notwithstanding all entirely and undamaged, thus the moisture of the cloves. Findings upon the delivered cargo of the Honourable Company's ship De Geregtigheid, namely: By the Junior Merchant and Warehouse Master Egbert Nicolaas Wiardi the merchandise, warehouse necessities, gift goods, haberdashery, and writing implements invoiced per this vessel are received in the following manner, to wit: Nutmegs /:bestowed with cloves:/ are invoiced in 45 chests net 3371.- lb. The cited chests were weighed gross here at 7124 lb, and the same are in conformity with the weight memorandum of spices received from Batavia and there weighed out to the officers of this vessel at: 7190.- lb. Thus a gross underweight on the entire parcel of: 66.- lb. According to the report of the judicial commissioners Roossen and Masser, they, in the presence of the Honourable Fiscal Meijer and in the presence of the ship's officers, had the 4 chests No. 41, 43, 44, and 45 opened and sorted, as these differed most in the invoiced and found gross weight; and upon taring of the empty chests with their lids and straw mats, they were found to be 217, whereas the same according to the cited weight memorandum at Batavia were tared at fully 265 pounds, thus an underweight on the tare of 48.- lb. Being the invoiced 428 lb of nutmegs and cloves net in the same. The found tare underweight, both on these chests and those containing only cloves, is to be attributed to the drying of the wood from which the chests are made, 7/8 percent. Cloves: there are invoiced in the cited 45 chests with the nutmegs 1360 and in 290 chests with only cloves 28,652.- or together 30,002 net pounds. The cited 290 chests were weighed in gross here at 45,447 lb, and the same are in conformity with the weight memorandum of spices received from Batavia, there weighed out to the officers of this vessel at fully 45,868.- lb. Thus over the entire parcel a gross underweight of 421 lb or 7/8 percent broad. In conformity with the above-mentioned report, 6 chests marked No. 5, 12, 118, 239, 249, and No. 265 were found to be somewhat damaged and differed fully 84½ lb in gross weight from their invoiced weight, and upon re-weighing for tare were found to be 315¼ lb, whereas the same were invoiced at fully 367 pounds, or an underweight on tare of 51¾ lb. In net cloves there were 564¼ lb found in the said 6 chests, but the same according to the cited memorandum should have contained fully 597 lb, thus net cloves short 5½ percent, or 32¾ lb. Together as above 84½ lb. The adjacent found net underweight is presumed to have been lost through the failure of the chests, or stolen notwithstanding all applied watchfulness, 32¾ lb. Regarding the moisture of the cloves, I inform Your Right Honourable that this was shown to the Right Honourable Lord Director upon receipt thereof, but the difference is to be [illegible]. All these cloves were found very damp and moist, as the cited report dictates and as was shown by me, the undersigned Head Administrator, upon receipt thereof to the Right Honourable Lord Director. Mace: there are invoiced 6 suckels, which according to the cited weight memorandum at Batavia were weighed out to the ship's officers to satisfaction at 1028.- gross pounds. These suckels are in conformity with the aforementioned attached report accounted for here as six suckels /:among which one cut open and stolen:/ which together weighed 998 gross pounds, consequently a gross underweight of 30 pounds or 7/8 percent broad. It is resolved that the ship's officers are to write off the rogue pieces found stolen during unloading, [illegible] cinnamon [illegible].

On the powdered sugar 4 per cent at 39783 lb. On the red minium 2/3 per cent at 17 lb. Cinnamon is in its value satisfactorily validated. Regarding the goods and Japanese bar copper listed: 1200 boxes with 150,000 lb accounted for here with 149,639 lb Deficit 361 lb. The beverages, wet goods, and further dispensary provisions that are listed on the invoice of this vessel have been received by the Bookkeeper and Dispenser Anthonij de Sille in the Honourable Company's Dispensary in the following manner, namely: Arrack Api is entered in 20 leagers that were branded by the Gauger 7200 jugs. The cited 20 leagers arrack good of taste and quality are received here with 6240 jugs. Too little 960 jugs. Conform aforementioned General Regulation may be validated hereon 13 1/3 per cent with 960 jugs. Dutch vinegar must be delivered in one half leager 180 jugs. In one half leager is accounted for here 168 jugs, short 12. Hereon may according to aforementioned regulation be validated 6 2/3 per cent with 12 jugs. 480. 481. The 12th December Anno 1786. The 12th December Anno 1786. On the linseed oil 10 1/3 percent with 5 cans, the ship's officers are also, according to the order, to be made to compensate at Batavia for the 2 completely old and defective, delivered and received irreparable leaguers, with the cost of purchase, and in return against that to have the aforesaid leaguers handed over to them. Thus disposed and placed in the margin, on the day, month, and year aforesaid. Thus placed in respect, December 1786. /:was signed:/ The report of the inspection per the journal itself of the ship to be sent to the Principal Place. Correction on the ship De Geregtigheid: Note, in one of the cases of domestic distilled waters 1 bottle, and in the case of aniseed also 1 bottle found in pieces. For the rest, that belonging to this administration was received to satisfaction for the named dispenser. The requisitioned equipment, ammunition, and material supplies were delivered to the provisional equipment overseer I. A. Mossel, namely: Linseed oil must be brought in a half aam: cans 45. Said vat was found with 3 inches empty space, thus only received: cans 40. Deficiency: cans 5. Upon this, according to the General Regulations, may be validated 10 1/3 percent with cans 5. The remainder belonging to this administration was received to satisfaction by the named equipment overseer, except two whole leaguers that were delivered entirely unserviceable, filled with blacksmith's coals, and according to the statement of the cooper are irreparable. By the chief surgeon of this directorship, Daniel Peperhooven, the medicines requisitioned per invoice of this vessel were received in quantity conforming to the catalogue and in quality to satisfaction. The requisitioned weapons and goods were received to satisfaction by the ensign West as administrator of the Honourable Company's armoury, except one bundle of drum strings, unserviceable and eaten to pieces by vermin. Answered the 10th. Surat, the 11th December Anno 1786. /:was signed:/ W. E. Christiaansz, M. Monte. The Fiscal Meijer having submitted the report of the inspection made of the journal kept on the ship De Geregtigheid during the voyage hither, it was understood to send the said report with the journal itself among the appendices to the Principal Place. While it was further noted that on the 1st of this month in the service of the Noble Company was accepted and placed upon the ship De Geregtigheid the youngster Jan de Vassij as apprentice boy with the wage of 7 florins per month and under the usual bond. Upon the request made thereto and the nomination by Captain Christiaansz, it was agreed to appoint on board the ship De Geregtigheid the following persons, with recommendation to Their High Excellencies for the obtaining of the wages standing thereto, namely: As boatswain's mate, the boatswain's second mate Barend van Hooven of Amsterdam; As boatswain's second mate, the quartermaster Hendrik Elias of Saxe-Gotha; As boatswain's second mate, the sailor Johan Andriessen of Norway; and As cooper, the fellow sailor Jacobus Wagener of The Hague. 482. 483. Subsequently having been submitted the report of the expressly appointed commissioners, being Captain Christiaansz, the warehouse master Wiardi, and Fiscal Meijer, who by order of the Director inspected and examined the newly built vessels, the narrow ship De Batavier and the decked hoeker with a narrow ship's rig De Charlotta, according to which the aforesaid vessels were found to be solidly and strongly made and in all parts satisfactory, the first mentioned being in length 62 feet keel and 78 feet over the stems, breadth at its waterline 25 feet and 2 inches, and hollow and depth 13 1/4 feet; and the second, or De Charlotta, in length 55 1/4 feet keel and 66 feet over the stems, breadth at its waterline 22 1/2 feet, and hollow and depth 10 feet and 10 1/2 inches, it was agreed to insert the said report here. The undersigned expressly appointed commissioners, having been ordered by written warrant of Your Right Honourable /:annexed hereto:/ to examine the newly built narrow ship De Batavier, alongside the also newly built decked hoeker De Charlotta, namely whether the same are good, strong, and in all parts satisfactory, as well as to ascertain their length, breadth, and depth; have the honour to serve Your Right Honourable on that account with the following report. Both the aforesaid vessels are good, strong, and in all parts satisfactorily built, so that the same, with ordinary annual maintenance, can serve the Noble Company for a series of years. The keel of De Batavier is in length 62 and over the stems 78 feet, is in breadth at its waterline 25 feet and 2 inches, as well as hollow and depth 13 1/4 feet. The keel of De Charlotta is in length 55 1/4 and over the stems 66 feet, is in breadth at its waterline 22 1/2 feet, as well as hollow and depth 10 feet and 10 1/2 inches.
