Dust and grit, ditto mite-eaten: 12 9/100, 831½ lb., total 6211 lb. And should have weighed: 6479 lb. Thus it appears that there is a deficiency of per cento 4 1/10 or 268 lb. 2310 lb. of cloves mixed in with the above-mentioned nutmegs: Good deliverable: 91 1/10 per cento, 2108 lb. 70 16 February 16th February 260 ditto Report on the finding of the cloves packed in 1784. 77 chests of nutmegs and cloves showed a difference of 85 lb in the gross re-weighing compared to the gross weighing of Batavia, and since they were to contain net 6479 lb nutmegs and 2310 lb cloves, or 8789 lb, this shortage does not exceed the provision of the said general regulation. Cloves showed a difference of 87 lb on the gross weight, which calculates to the written 26313 lb, roughly 1000 percent, the Right Honourable paying 1 percent by regulation. 11 packages of mace were delivered 47 lb short in gross weight, which calculates to 1/100 percent, and the regulation allows 1 percent. The other goods brought for this administration were delivered in accordance with the invoice, as were all the timbers for the wood shed, item the goods for the armory and artillery; but the gunpowder in 60 kegs was, in accordance with the report of Adjutant de Vielenen, officer, and Sergeant Cramer dated 17 October 1786, found to contain 4 kegs of 6 degrees, 3 of 5, and 53 of 3 lb 4 degrees. 1 chest of medicines, the following goods having been found spoiled, in accordance with the report of the surgeon Jan van Etten and sub-doctor G. Having been received the report requested at the session of 8 August of the past year from the Honourable Chief Administrator and Warehouse Masters concerning the findings of the cloves brought here in the year 1784, packed in bags, and what the shortage in weight, item dust and gravel, has been on that parcel, compared against those brought in chests according to previous custom, which document reads as follows: To 72 73 16 February To the Right Honourable Worshipful Sir, 16 February Mr. Isaac Titsingh, Director of the Company's trade in the kingdoms of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, etc., etc., together with the Council. Right Honourable Worshipful Sir, Respected Councillors, In compliance with your Right Honourable Worships' esteemed resolution of 8 August last, by which the undersigned were requested to report how the cloves brought by the ship Straalen in the year 1784 were found, and what shortage in weight, dust, and gravel that parcel had or yielded, compared against those which were brought in chests according to previous custom: They have the honour to present that upon the arrival and sorting of 18228 lb with the Straalen, the same were found to be: 17793 lb good and deliverable cloves 367¼ lb dust, gravel, and crowns 67 lb evaporated and missing, or a shortage of 13/100 percent on the whole parcel; this compared with a parcel of 18300 lb which, brought in chests in the year 1778 by the ship de Zilveren Leeuw, sorted and delivered in January 1780: 17685 lb good deliverable 572 lb dust, gravel, and crowns 43 lb evaporated and missing, or 1/100 percent; and when compared with the above, it appears that on the arrival in bags there was still an adverse difference of 3/100 percent. When one now compares the above-mentioned parcel against the one recently brought by the ship Schoonderloo to the amount of 30017 lb, also brought in chests, which upon sorting consisted of: 28725 lb good deliverable 919 lb dust and gravel 373 lb evaporated and missing, or 1 13/100 percent, this gives, compared to the arrival in bags, again an adverse difference of 19/100 percent. One cannot therefore determine what would be more profitable, since this depends on the dryness of the cloves and the prompt or slow sale, while it has been observed that the cloves in bags were found to be drier than those in chests. Hereafter was further reviewed the contents of a letter from Kassembazaar, as appears by 84 85 16th February 16th February of the servants concerning the advanced 10,000 rop: on silk arrears concerning the non-fulfillment of remonstrates. And finally, thirdly, the barge freights of shallops and vessels have yielded a decrease of f.r. 100:4:14, because fewer vessels were employed for the surveying of the fairway in this year. To the difference of time this increase in comparison with the previous financial year is caused, for the same servants as then were employed; against 1779/80 this gives a difference of ƒ 155:19:— to the bad. Last year only the ship Straalen was in the Ganges, and in this financial year two, namely Constantia and Hinloopen, of which to the latter, in round timbers and cordage due to lack of provisions, considerable supplies had to be made, amounting to ƒ 4684:16:— more than the other in cash; this account is against 1779/80 to the good by ƒ 32303:13:—. In this financial year one had to pay for the shallops hired last year for some months that they were kept in service, and to this was added the necessary expense on two shallops arrived from Batavia and their equipment for the river, and this is the reason for the increase therein; in comparison with 1779/80 this gives a difference of ƒ 11584:6:— to the good.
