1785: Journal of the Company sloop De Krab. Sunday the 31st of July arrived on board with the Company papers, in the morning the wind landward, at 2 o'clock weighed anchor and set sail, steered away for the island of Onrust, as we needed some provisions there for the sloop, such as caps for the tops, cross-trees for the topgallant mast, along with studding-sail yards and cleats. In the morning had the island of Kuijper northwest, the ships in the Batavia roads east-southeast, Hoorn north by east half east, circa half a mile off the nearest shore. At 8 o'clock in the morning anchored in 12 fathoms mud bottom near the island of Onrust, went ashore and arranged matters so that we were provided with what was necessary, at night calm. Monday the 1st of August, in the morning the wind landward, calm, weighed anchor and set sail, steered westwards. The wind variable from the northwest at 6 o'clock, anchored in 11 fathoms below the Point of Bantam, one-quarter mile from shore. Wednesday the 3rd of August, at night and for this day the wind variable and dead calm, found lying at anchor here the Company ship Hinloopen bound for Bengal, aboard which was the Honorable Worshipful Gentleman Director at Chinsura, tested and swayed the rigging, rigged preventer backstays fore and aft. Thursday the 4th of August, at night at 2 o'clock the wind southeast, weighed anchor and steered to the west. Saturday the 6th of August, in the morning the wind east-southeast, at sunrise the bearing of the Java coast from the Third Point south-southwest to the Second Point southwest one-quarter west, Prince's Island from southwest by west to south-southwest, the island of Krakatau the Saddle northwest by west northerly, estimated to be 2 miles from the nearest shore. At 10 o'clock a native vessel from Pepper Bay came alongside, which came to ask the destination of the Company sloop, steered to the west. The wind variable and calm from the south-southwest, at 7 o'clock seeing a three-masted ship to the west of Prince's Island and a two-masted vessel near Flat Point of Sumatra, coming from the west. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon the ship fired a live shot, backed the sails, and came on board with the boat, and learned that the captain was in need of a large-scale chart from Dwars in de Weg to Batavia, and sailed alongside his Honor with the said chart, learned it was the Company ship Avenhorn, Captain A. Tobiassen, from the Chamber of Hoorn, bore away. At 6 o'clock took bearings of Prince's Island, the west point south-southeast, the north point east by south, and the Saddle of Krakatau all round north-northeast, estimated to be 5 to 6 miles from the nearest shore. This bearing on the Company western-degree chart comes to a longitude of 120 degrees 2 minutes and a latitude of 6 degrees 5 minutes, from which the course under God's precious blessing begins. The wind south by south-southeast, steered west-southwest. Lashed the anchors to the bows and then plugged the hawseholes; brought the forestays to the bowsprit, rigged rolling stays around the topmasts, fitted the hatches with double tarpaulins, lashed the yawl, discovered a strong current running to the west. Thursday the 25th August, in the evening and in the morning sighted nothing from the masthead, shot new mizen halliards, seeing some grey birds, shearwaters and new mizen halliards in. Friday the 26th ditto, in the evening and in the morning sighted nothing from the masthead, opened the main hatch to air, high swell from the S.E., steered around the N.N.W. Saturday the 27th August, in the evening and in the morning sighted nothing from the masthead, hauled water from the hold up to the deck, found several casks in the hold to have leaked half empty, brought the leaking water casks out to keep on deck, upon hauling from the bottom tier discovered water on the ceiling, took up a limber board on either side of the keelson and let the water run off, pumped the vessel dry as far as one could see where the bags of rice in the lowest tier were wet, also against the ship's side showed wetness, weather permitting left the hatches open for the hold to air. Saturday the 3rd of September, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, high sea from the south causing the vessel to work heavily, received much sea water on the deck, set lookouts by the mastheads. Sunday the 4th ditto, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, high sea from the south, took reefs in the mainsail, set up the topmast shrouds, the main topmast staysail halyard broke, we had crossed the Equinoctial line. Monday the 5th ditto, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, made a new pudding on the everyday anchor, discovered a leak forward in the bow on the starboard side under the hawseholes, but could not get to it due to the heavy pitching of the vessel, had to wait until smooth water, discovered a leak in a two-aam cask of French wine whereof one third of the wine had leaked out, constantly unable to get an amplitude, set lookouts by the mastheads. Tuesday the 6th ditto, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, took the first reef in the mainsail and rigged a new fore-tackle, and saw several birds, among all a small land bird that came out of the water and sat upon the foresheet, around ten in the first watch an increasing storm turned to a tempest, took the 2nd reef in the mainsail and worked with sails to make westing while steering north, made emergency lashings around the jolly boat and set shorter braces on the foreyard, received tremendous heavy downpours of rain over the deck, in the dogwatch at 2 hours made the mainsail fast. Wednesday the 7th of September, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, set the mainsail again and set more sail, got much water at the pump, seeing several black birds, continuing high sea from which the vessel worked heavily. Thursday the 8th ditto, in the evening and in the morning saw nothing from aloft, seeing a clump of sea moss drifting, high sea swell making the vessel work heavily and received much sea water over, the horizon continuously covered with clouds at sunrise and sunset so that one could never obtain a true amplitude, steered around north-east. At 12 o'clock at night turned around, the vessel working too heavily, took sea water on deck, made fast the light sails and lowered the topsail to the cap; at 12 o'clock at night hauled by the wind to the north, sounded continuously, no bottom. Friday the 16th of September: In the evening and in the morning nothing sighted from aloft except several white tropicbirds and black gulls and a multitude of porpoises and blackfish; seeing a clump of duckweed drifting, set a press of sail; at 1 o'clock in the afternoon seeing land from the east to South-Southwest; sounded with 100 fathoms of line up and down but no bottom. At 3 o'clock was recognized to our great sorrow, counted seven large and small islands in the group, extending North-Northwest and South-Southeast. We now found ourselves on a lee shore with a damaged vessel and sails, strong currents running to the north, Southwest and South-Southwest winds; seeing no possibility of turning the bow to the south against the strong currents running to the north and with such a vessel, being on a lee shore and continually subject to heavy squalls from the South-Southwest and South-Southwest, seeing no possibility other than with sails to get clear of it; therefore resolved to stand off the shore to the West-Northwest, took the second reef in the topsails and steered by the wind to the West-Northwest; at night had birds that settled on the vessel, all screeching; during the night we were strongly set to the North-Northeast by the current. And at the same time I said to the crew that we currently still have provisions to satisfy our needs even if the voyage were to last another three months, the wind beginning gradually to shift more and more to the east. It is our intention, with God's help, to head west from here again in mid-October and depart for Ceylon, as we believe the northeast monsoon will then have set in. Departed in the evening at 6 o'clock in one of their vessels to go up to the place Mergue. Rowed the entire night, wind east to east-northeast. Report on why the officers did not accept the Honorable Company's sloop De Krab, detained at Mergui, which is: That the sloop, from the 10th of October 1785 until the 27th of March 1787, which amounts to 17 months and 17 days, during which time the commander had to remain with the crew in the land of Burma, he had no authority over the sloop before the 14th of January, when the King's order was handed over to him. Asking our deliverer, a Malabar named Janta Drie, whether the order mentioned obtaining compensation for damages and cargo, he answered no, but that the crew and sloop, just as it was, were to be returned to us by the King through the government of Mergui.
