The same Mr. Jaux dined with me; our conversation turned to the sad situation of Mr. Boers when he was detained in Pegu; that he had lent him the said 1300 rs. to finish paying the ransom; that this sum had been distributed among several of the prince's business agents; that in spite of this, Mr. Boers had great difficulty in leaving that country, because the Captain, who was also detained, caused him difficulties followed by intrigues which he stirred up by causing the prince's people to act, also by distributing some money to them; and a Frenchman who resides near the prince, whose trust he enjoys, was obliged to intervene vigorously against the said Captain to put an end to his underhanded proceedings; thus I certify to all whom it may concern that my conversation with the aforementioned Mr. Jaux was word for word as it is written above. This is to certify whom it may concern that Mr. Bastiaen Boers was on board my ship as a passenger bound for Bengal, but upon receiving notice that the captain and crew of the Dutch vessel had taken passage on board Captain Welsh's ship, he immediately left my ship and took passage on board Captain Welsh's ship in order to accompany the captain and crew to Bengal. This is to certify that on my arrival at Rangoon in Pegu, Mr. Boers, a merchant in the Honorable Dutch Company's service, who had been detained prisoner for some time, made application to me for a passage out of Pegu to any European settlement, expressing his desire of going with the ship that would be first ready. I told him he might depend upon having a passage with me if I was the first ship ready. I heard from good authority that Mr. Boers has spent a good deal of money in government to procure the order necessary for all foreigners to leave this country, and likewise that he has been stopped several times by the malicious intentions and proceedings of some Armenian and European inhabitants at Rangoon, who, upon hearing that Mr. Boers would soon obtain the order, would underhandedly bribe and speak to some of the people in power. To let him accompany his countrymen, I likewise granted him a passage. He immediately went down to his former ship and brought from there his effects, and came on board the Venus. I cannot conceive the reason that, upon my sailing, Captain Straele informed me he could not have the pleasure of going with the Venus, but requested that I would take a Moorish merchant passenger to Bengal, which I granted. When the searchers came down from Rangoon to clear out the ship, the officers belonging to the government extorted more money from Mr. Boers on the pretense that his order was not an official one; with money and some other presents he got passed with much difficulty and got clear. The brigantine of the Dutch Company departed from Batavia to go to Colombo. It took 2 months on the way; afterward we arrived in the roadstead of Mergui, 18 leagues distant, at an island called Gedarat, and we remained anchored. Afterwards, a pinnace was sent to fetch water and firewood, and from there to go to the King's Island, which is a few leagues distant, and sent there to look for fish and some other refreshments. As they found nothing, the captain's order was broken; the said pinnace went with the crew to Mergui, and the authorities of Mergui held the pinnace captive with 7 men. Three of the said men of the pinnace, if you wish to examine them through us, they may be examined. For these reasons, the Governor of Mergui sent 7 war boats, and they arrived alongside, weighed anchor, set sail, and took it to Mergui. They robbed our weapons and chests of clothing and other provisions, and afterwards sent ashore the captains and all the crew of the vessel. Because there was no crew, water entered and soaked 120 bags of rice. And after having robbed us, he confiscated the vessel and sent us captive into the presence of Your Majesty; furthermore, we have arrived in Mergui and were kept prisoner for up to 4 months. The King of Ceillaô, what ship he has, we cannot know; the people of Ceillaô and of the land call it the Island of Ceillaô. The undersigned, Master of Equipage here, and the Captain of the ship De Negotie lying in this bay, have, in compliance with the highly esteemed order of the Ceylon Government, examined the former commander of the sloop De Krab, Daniel Straete, in the presence of the Fiscal of this Commandment, the Honorable D'Estandau, concerning his voyage from Batavia until the vessel happened to fall upon Pegu, and in what condition he left the same upon his departure from there, and have likewise reviewed his kept journal, wherefore they hereby inform your Honorable Respects: That the said Van Straele, in fulfillment of his examination, has delivered to the undersigned the report annexed hereto, signed by him and the Lieutenant of the sloop De Krab, Simon Pietersen, who also presented himself to the undersigned, concerning all that befell the aforementioned sloop, its crew, and cargo, so that the undersigned 3790 E 120 And after deliberation it was approved and agreed that the undersigned also conform to the contents thereof, and proceed further to report to your Honorable Respects: That upon examining the journal kept on the aforementioned sloop, it was observed that the courses stated therein are consistent with the sailing orders and with the chart of the Indian Sea; so that regarding these, nothing falls to be remarked; that the lost voyage of the said sloop must have been caused not only by the drift of the currents, but also by a great dead reckoning error of its officers, who certainly would have been of the opinion that they had sailed more than was actually the case. That according to the journal, evening and sun bearings were taken only a single time, and that too little, so that one must presume that the sloop had found itself to the west of Ceylon, or that its azimuth compass must have been of no worth; that the best compasses differ by as much as 1 to 12 degrees, and that experience teaches that near Ceylon, both to the east and to the west, one has no more than a few minutes of variation; that one is however always certain that the greater the variation the compasses have, the farther to the west one finds oneself, even up to 6 to 7 degrees, through which the Company's ships generally pass; so that Commander Straete, according to the evening and sun bearing taken by him on the 22nd of August 1785, must have been approximately at the longitude of 82 to 83 degrees. Journal. while he was at the estimated longitude of 90 degrees 24 minutes, for which reason the undersigned are of the opinion that the compass of the said Strale was not good, and that the aforementioned Strale, having sailed down the latitude with his entrusted sloop, continued his course in order to pass below Malabar, trusting according to his reckoning to be west of Ceylon and thus sailing east until he should discover land; but then found himself east of the island of Ceylon or in the Nicobar Islands, from where at that time he could not return to Ceylon because, as is well known, the wind was contrary and the strong currents set to the north, while also the rigging of the sloop was disabled and the crew of that vessel were sickly, so that the aforementioned Strale was forced to touch land to obtain refreshment and to repair his vessel and its rigging from defects, and for these reasons he fell upon Pegu, where he and his crew met with such experiences as are known from the journal and the report annexed hereto by the said Strale and his lieutenant Pietersz.
