To the master blacksmith Juriaan Heifort, who in the Company's service here unfortunately lost the use of his right hand, we have caused to be paid the compensation of ƒ 600: —. — stipulated in the General Articles, and had his wages written off, and upon his request granted an attestation to him thereof, of which we humbly give notice and hereby report that he is departing for the Netherlands with one of the Ceylon return ships, a copy of that attestation being enclosed herewith. We, Johan Gerard van Angelbeek, Ordinary Councillor of the Dutch Indies, Governor and Director on behalf of the General Dutch Chartered East India Company, together with the Council of Policy at koetsiem, declare hereby, at the requisition of the blacksmith Juriaan Huifort of Amsterdam, to have full knowledge, as has also appeared to us from the attestations of the overseer of the blacksmith's shop, Carel Julius Sprenger, and of the chief surgeon of the Company's Hospital, Daniel van der Sloot, both dated 29 December of the past year, that on the 4th of April prior, while working in the blacksmith's shop, during the heading of lead, he was accidentally struck on the right hand by the sledgehammer operator, whereby the middle finger was completely crushed, and he has thereby completely lost the use of that hand, and furthermore is not in a condition to be able to earn his living; on account of which we grant to him upon his urgent request this attestation, to make use of it at all times and places. Thus done and granted in the city of koetsiem on the 15th of December 1788. It was signed: I: I: van Angelbelk.
